    June 2022 surgery buddies

I’m going to try to tackle a couple different issues here. Two weeks ago I was nervous, anxious, scared, and snapping at everyone because surgery was 3 weeks away and I was seriously questioning the sanity of doing this. I cried, I yelled, I ate…then I calmed the heck down. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The most difficult, nearly impossible food item I have had to turn from is Coca Cola.  I did a very relaxed eating plan…couple of Protein Shakes, a salad starting 3 weeks before surgery. I knew that one week prior to surgery, I absolutely would follow my doctor’s pre - surgery plan to a T. I cheated once in awhile, but with surgery scheduled for June 8, I knew that on 5/31, I would be compliant. And, I was. I stayed on plan yesterday., I’ve been completely compliant today. 😊 I found, thanks to a recommendation here, that I love the Premier Peanut Butter chocolate shake. I have had a difficult time finding a shake I like because the pre-surgery selection for my surgeon was Premier or Bariatric Pal. Today I tried PB and chocolate and I’m good! FWIW, I’m doing every.little.thing I can to be nice to me in every category except putting food in my mouth. I went away with my daughter for the holiday weekend and relaxed and was nice to me. I took an entire day off from school today for my pre-anesthesia visit at the hospital, took a long nap this afternoon. Yesterday I was on a tele-visit for post-surgery care with an extremely well-informed nurse who also has undergone bariatric surgery. She was a wealth of information. This morning’s hospital visit really helped calm my nerves. We have amazing health care in Wake County, NC, and I am repeatedly impressed with the care that I have received. I feel much less stressed, and again very comfortable with my decision to pursue bariatric surgery because of those 2 surgeon-required pre-procedure appointments. I’ll continue to update as this moves forward. Thanks for reading. 😊 Starting Weight: 222 CW: 213 GW: 128 Height: 5’2” Age: 67 RNY, Hiatal hernia repair, gastric bypass, gallbladder removal
  2. 6 weeks post op and got my bicycle from the shop a couple weeks ago and been riding. been using my bicycle instead of my car to get around and get things done. takes longer but its actually fun. 3 more days until my monthly weigh in and body measurements that i do on the 4th of every month. hopefully i lost some weight and got a bit smaller lol I also have yet to experience any issues with any foods.

I’m the same exact weight! My surgery is June 22nd. I’m nervous too. (Also nervous because they put my surgery on hold due to all the covid cases for 7months and during that time I gained weight. I’m really nervous about what they’ll say at my pre op appointment.) I’m nervous about complications. But I keep thinking that at my weight, I’m at risk of dying everyday! 😬 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hang in there!

    Very low heart rate

I'm 4 weeks post op, and I've noticed my heart rate has dropped, as well. Before surgery I was always sitting at 68-73 bpm. Now I'm at 60-64 bpm. Nothing crazy, but I noticed when I work out and my heart rate used to go to like 110 or 115, it now goes to like 98 - 103 or so. So I'm just keeping an eye on it and if i dips to what is considered too low, I will consult my cardiologist (my PCP isn't worried right now, so at least there's that). My surgeon said it's normal because as we drop weight and get healthier, our hearts don't have to work as hard.

  6. I just had my first meeting with the surgeon and I am getting very anxious. After studying the three surgeries available I met with the doctor and after a long conversation he convinced me the LapBand was not the best choice and that I should consider the Gastric Bypass. Looking at the facts I had to agree with the surgeon. Here are my particulars: male, weight 240, age 70, height 5' 8", currently using Rybilsus to control my type 2. Having read the book from the weight loss surgery program, I am now frightened, anxious, afraid and overwhelmed! How do I move forward? Sent from my SM-P610 using BariatricPal mobile app

    sleeve vs bypass

I never said it was gone, it has improved dramatically. Prior to surgery I was on 40 mg Nexium and eating Gaviscon dual action tablets almost after every meal as well as the liquid Gaviscon so yes it has improved as my surgeon said it would as he believed my weight was a big factor in my reflux. I am yet to try to come of the nexium although I have been advised to but I remember how awful re-bound reflux is and I am happy with just taking 20 mg. Prior to surgery I had that big side effects fear and wanted to get off them right or wrong but I am comfortable where I am now in regards to my reflux. I didn't want the risk of possible complications that come with a by-pass which is why I opted for a sleeve. Don't worry I had a melt down just before being wheeled into surgery because of my post op Gerd fears ( that I had read about on the internet ). My surgeon reassured me I would be fine and so far I have been.

How exciting! I start my pre-op tomorrow! I agree about wanting to jump off the table and be right back to what you were doing before. I had a lap chole. when I was 19. I was out grocery shopping the same night and want to be doing that this time too. I had a baby in 2019 and rushed them to discharge me, so I could get my other kid to her volleyball practice. I'm not one for sitting around and being taken care of. All of your other fears are valid. I'm a chronic weigher (multiple times a day). I'm thinking of avoiding my home scale, but I have access to scales everywhere. Even eating tuna at lunch today I wondered how I was ever going to get used to eating without drinking or having to wait 30 minutes. I've have a slow gut like even with my gallbladder gone, it's 3-5 days between BM's. I've done some other diets that were very low in calories but had decent fiber and still needed a laxative weekly to have a BM. I work in the medical field as well, and I 100% have said that I'll go to a competing practice/surgery center before I was treated at my own just because I don't want any of them to see A) my charted weight and B ) my derriere. All in all, I think it would be strange not to be worried about some of the nuances this is going to change. Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow!
  10. So many people have warned me against clothing shopping but umm if I can't eat I shop lol. Also Torrid had some amazing sells. Beside the first 2 dresses I can wear right after surgery and as I lose weight I can wear them with a belt.
  11. Hi everyone, I had lap band surgery in 2010 and went from 330 lbs to about 215 in 2016, however, I started having some problems with the band where I could barely eat or drink anything and kept loosing weight rapidly. Went to the doctor and they did an upright xray with contrast and you could see that everything was stuck in the esophagus. The doctor said the band had to come out. Obviously I didn't want that and begged them to remove all fluid from the band and wait another week but that did not help. It turned out that there was a lot of scar tissue from the band around where it was installed. The doctor wanted to do a conversion during the band removal but the insurance did not approve since I was 'too skinny' and did not qualify. I asked the hospital if I could pay the difference between removal and doing the sleeve since they already had me there and all the staff, etc. but was told it was not possible and it would be $24,000 which I could not afford. After the removal I gained all the weight back and now I am between 320-325 lbs again. I had been with two employers since then but like most of them they specifically exclude bariatric surgery nowadays. Now I am with a new employer and they will apparently pay for it. [sorry for the long background story] I am consider whether to get a sleeve or bypass. After doing a lot of research I think a sleeve would be better since it is less intrusive and the stomach function pretty much remains intact and you don't have to take medication for the rest of your life. What do you all suggest?

    Blah...my first stall...

Meanwhile I GAINED two pounds this week. Not the first gain and I suspect not the last, but irritating. I will borrow your zen for a few days...
  13. I know many people really like Baritastic, but I have more than 12 years of data on MFP and I am comfortable using it, so I don't want to change... I think I'm going to track calories this week to see if I can lose the 2 lbs I gained on my trip and then see from there.
  14. I think it just goes to show weights look different on everyone because I know some tall girls who weigh around 160 and look great. I also know that at 235 I was looking decent, wore size 14 and L shirts and felt really good physically. I don't know though. I just hope I can make it to 220. 15. I am 6ft tall. My surgeon's team did NOT give me a "goal" weight they only made sure my expectations on how much weight I would loose (based on averages) were within reason. Years ago I lost a bunch of weight and was 245 and looked fantastic! Size 10/12 pants, large shirts.( I will have to find an old pic) According to medical charts 6ft woman should weigh 140-177lbs. I am sorry if I offend anyone but that is disgustingly skinny. My brother is 6'2" and weighs about 190 and looks sick and starved. I could never imagine myself under 200, although I would like to see 199 just to say I saw "100's" as an adult. My ultimate long term goal is to maintain 200-225lbs.
  16. Honestly, no matter what you set your goal weight at, your body is going to decide where it lands. That may be higher or lower than what you expect.
  17. I have several friends who've had this surgery who are 5'11" and are doing well around 175. But the weight you can sustain while still enjoying your life is much more important than the lowest weight you can get to.
  18. Nice! Did you get any excess skin removed? That can also affect weight. I'm also thinking doctors give u a goal factoring in excess skin. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. Thanks for sharing! I feel like I couldn't even imagine being under 200 lbs but I think I just haven't weighed less than 200 since I was a little kid. I once lost a lot of weight too and got to 235. I don't have many pics from those days but I hve this one. I remember being able to feel my ribs and hip bones at that weight. I had a lot of loose skin on my lower stomach (apron stomach). My hips are really wide too. The side by side was me at like 300 lbs and the one next to it in the denim coat is about now at 255. 20. Hi, I'm 5'11 (close to 6') MY team gave me a weight that is not accurate. Even one of the providers said that her previous patient was given the exact same number as goal weight (214). When I plugged in my info into the same tracker she should have been using, it said like 190lbs. I have previously weighed and maintained 160lbs for 10 years - and for me, that is my goal weight. I like 160lbs.
  21. So I stand by my claim that I'm 5'11"; however, I have a large frame and broad shoulders/back. I'm still in pre-op, but several years ago, I lost a lot of weight and made it down to about 215. I was satisfied with my size at that time. I was wearing 12/14 in pants.

    I'm struggling losing weight

stalls typically last 1-3 weeks, but it's not unheard of for them to last longer. Just stick to your plan and your weight loss will eventually start up again. Stay off the scale if it's messing with your head too much.
  23. As I'm getting closer to my "goal zone" (in between 220-190) I'm wondering if anyone else who is female and six feet or taller was given a goal weight and what that should be. I distinctly remember my doctor showing me a chart during my initial consultation that put my sex and height at a desirable weight of 160 lbs but then my surgeon quickly said, that's not realistic for my frame/body and that these charts were outdated and inaccurate. He instead said I don't have a goal weight but told me he typically likes to see his patients under a BMI of 30 to reduce co-morbidities with being obese. Since 220 puts me in the "overweight" range, I'm sticking to that as a realistic goal until I achieve it and will assess the situation from there (how I feel, look etc). I'm wondering if any females who have big frames, broad shoulders, and are tall, like 6 feet and above, were given goal weights. What do you think about it? Is/was it achievable? Are you happy with how you look?

    Affordable personal training

I'm really looking for in person opportunities with weight machines. I am pretty decent with my cardio but have no clue what to do when it comes to weight training. I feel like it'll be beneficial for my metabolism and loose skin. (My arms and legs already look atrocious can't wait for maintenence so I can get everything sliced off lol) I guess I could look up weight training videos and bring them to the gym! 25. I do something sorta in between. I have a shake for breakfast and usually have a lunchable or a slice of egg white quiche for lunch which I know the average calories. I always keep my dinner right around 500 calories (I only have a handful of things that I eat because I am pretty picky eater) and I allow myself snacks that are about 100 calories when I am hungry. I do not track my snacks but I do keep them low calorie. Then I just weigh myself and if I gain I know that I have been giving in to the head hunger too much so I really ask myself if it’s real hunger. So I guess I do track my meals (I just have done the calculations already so I don’t have to do them daily) and I restrict my snack choices but not the quantity.
