    Re-sleeve

Thank you so much for the reply. I got the sleeve back in june 2019, I never felt real restriction, for the past 3 yrs I have been thinking its all in my head. I got an endoscopy done last week to find out I have a small hiatal hernia and my sleeve is " the body of my stomach is markedly enlarged". After I got these results back, it all made sense, my sleeve was not tight enough from the get go. I have mild gerd. Will my mild gerd and small hiatal hernia disqualify me for a resleeve? I was never able to reach goal weight the first time around and I have gained 17 lbs since reaching my lowest weight after the sleeve. I am 3 yrs out now. How much did you resleeve cost and who was your surgeon at mexicali? When did you get the sleeve reconstruction? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    September 2022 surgery buddies

I'm so sorry. Hopefully your surgeon can help. I'm praying that all is ok with my surgery as well. They haven't rejected any of my pre op testing and that is all done. I see my surgeon next week and i think it will be scheduled then. Don't give up, keep fighting.

    Doubting Whether I Should Proceed

That preop diet concept has come in handy for dealing with stalls. Keep that in your toolbox as an example of what you’re capable of down the road, after surgery. As everyone else has said, that kind of weight loss without this tool of wls is not exactly sustainable. I have been on full liquid diet since last Sunday and dropped 7lbs out of my stall, so far. People like to insert their opinions on what you should or shouldn’t do and what is or isn’t the best way to manage your success, but ultimately, it’s up to you. Good luck!
  4. So i had my 3 month blood test for vitamins and such. I got the results early this morning and everything is in the green. Only small issue is my iron saturation is just 1 point below normal. But iron total levels are good. Other than that every other vitamin, protein, calcium ect... are good. I thought this blood test would have had my cholesterol checked as well because it was high before surgery but i guess not. I will go ahead and order my own cholesterol test here next week to see how it is.

    Eggs

We had scrambled eggs in the hospital, so as others have noted, every plan is different and if your doc is fine with it, then go for it and try it. Our general plan philosophy was to try new foods one at a time to test for tolerance, and if there was no problem, then great, if there was, then try it again in a week or two. I had boiled eggs that first week, too. We could have anything within the liquid, mushy, pureed or soft regimes that first month. Some could progress quicker than others - that's life. My wife went through this a few years before I did and progressed more slowly, with not even liquids going down as well at first, and that was fine with the doc, well within the expected spectrum of results. When I tried things like beef veg soup, the first time I strained out the chunks, the second time I fork mashed them, and the third time just had it as is, soft chunks and all. So go with what your docs direct, and enjoy the ride.

    Post op sleeping

I didn't have problems with actual sleeping - but getting in and out of bed could be challenging, and also, it was about three weeks before I could sleep on my side (my preferred position).

    Doubting Whether I Should Proceed

they say that fewer than 5% of obese people are successful in keeping off lost weight. I, unfortunately, was not one of those people. I spent decades losing weight, only to gain it all back. Surgery was the only thing that allowed me to lose my excess weight (I lost over 200 lbs) and keep most of it off. no one can tell you whether or not you can do this on your own - but I agree with the others. A pre-op style diet is not sustainable long term. I would do this surgery again in a heartbeat. The first few weeks can be trying, but I have zero regrets (other than I should have done it years ago). It was the best decision I ever made.

    Doubting Whether I Should Proceed

What you achieve in pre-op is rarely sustainable in the long term without surgery, even with surgery, that much weight loss in that amount of time is only achieved by some those with very high weights...well over 400 or 500lbs. Only you can decide if you go ahead with surgery or not based on your personal circumstances. That said, I would always recommend questioning why those who are close who are against surgery as to their reasons. Its your health, its your body, its been your struggle (all those times you've attempted to lose weight and maintain the loss), etc etc. I didn't lose a lot of weight pre-op, I've lost more on other occasions, but I've never been able to sustain the weight loss or maintain without the surgery I eventually had. A question to you, without the pre-op diet you wouldn't have achieved the weight loss, but what have you done in the mean to make sure you can maintain it? What caused you to become overweight? What have you done or will you do to overcome what caused you to become overweight? This equally applies to having surgery or not? Being nervous or having seconds is quite common in the days and weeks leading to surgery, it may be useful for you to work out those feelings with a counsellor or therapist. You may decide to put your surgey on hold, you may not.
  10. Hi. This is my first post, though I have been lurking in the shadows for a few weeks now. I am scheduled for my VSG this Wednesday the 3rd of August. I started by pre-op diet on the 20th of July. The first few days - maybe even out to the first week of my pre-op diet were tough. I was constantly starving, especially at first. But, I stuck with it, haven't cheated, and am honestly less hungry in general now, though I still get a craving here and there. I have lost 20 pounds so far on my pre-op diet. I am now starting to have some serious doubts about proceeding with the surgery. I have lost more weight than I though I would pre-op. In fact, I am under my pre-op goal weight considerably. I am already starting to feel better physically, I am seeing drastic improvement in glucose readings, and despite the seriously reduced intake, I am more energetic. Also contributing to my doubt is a very close family member that is vehemently against my choice to have the surgery. I value their thoughts and input, and all of the factors have planted a significant seed of doubt in my mind. I worry that down the line I will be faced with a serious dose of regret. Has anyone else experienced similar situations? How did you proceed? Regrets either way?
  11. Greetings, Post-op people - what was sleeping/resting/moving around like in your immediate post op time (first two weeks)? I have read some people couldn’t lay down for a bit and other similar issues. what was your experience?

    Eggs

I was allowed scrambled eggs (& instant oats) in the purée stage but they had to be made with more milk & kept pretty runny. Would take me three days to eat two eggs. While plans have differences, 4 days seems too soon. (Two week stage cycles tend to be the most common.) You may struggle so don’t be afraid to go back to only liquids (including the cream soups) for a few more days. And yes, lots of people struggle with eggs - too rich I think.

2 Weeks Post Op... Some issues?

Yes definitely go to your doctor or an emergency centre. Black, tarry stools aren’t uncommon the first time or two after surgery but not this far out. Constipation is very, very common. Add some soluble, non swelling fibre to your diet. Many of us follow a routine of taking stool softeners or similar. Some take something every day. I’d take a softener if I hadn’t been for three days. Are you taking a ppi? Many find dry mouth a side effect. Try Biotene which is a mouth spray which ‘moisturises’ your mouth. Not sure about the stuck feeling. I’ll get that if I eat something too dry or coarse as a precursor to the foamies. And before my reflux was diagnosed (decades ago) I actually would get a bit of food stuck in my throat that had come up from my tummy. But you said you’re at the purée stage so unless your purées aren’t moist & liquidy enough (should easily dollop off a spoon) … 🤷🏻‍♀️ Unless your history with Barrett’s, etc, are causing some swelling but again ???? Maybe worth an appointment with your gastroenterologist & more than just a barium meal test. Hope they can find some answers for you & you feel better soon. Hey @Tiffanyl1288 I’m a little confused. At ten days out you are usually only still on liquids & then would progress to purées, then soft foods then solid foods by about the 6 weeks mark (though plans are different). What are you ‘eating’? If you are eating you may be irritating (& potentially damaging) your healing esophagus & tummy. Remember for when you are eating that we’re advised to avoid drinking and eating at the same time. Usually we’re told to leave 30 minutes before & after eating before drinking (sipping).

    Re-sleeve

Hi DreamBelieveAchieve How are you doing? I was resleeve for the same reason. I had xray from the first time to prove that they did not take out the top of the stomach. I am losing so slow thus time. I am 11 weeks. I am exercising daily so I do think I gained muscle. I think I need to pick up cardio. I am swimming and riding my bike but I have slowly gain strength to ride futher. My shortness of breath has dismissed since I am exercising daily. My BP is in normal limits. I have lost more inches than weight. I still have issues with carbs. I don't eat pasta, bread, rice ect. I do like oatmeal or cream of wheat. I don't get very hungry now. Having issues getting my fluids in but my protein is around 60 to 80 daily. Any suggestions to increase weight loss.

    Re-sleeve

Hi Nina I had a revision or reconstruction for the same reason as dream believe. I went to Mexicali MX to a hospital. Mexicali Bariatrics did the reconstruction. It's been a slow process and I am 11 weeks. I feel very satisfied with limited food. I am exercising a lot more this time. I have more energy. I had to have a barium swallow and I had xray from the first sleeve. He told me it was not my fault for the weight regain. The did a barium swallow after revision checking for leaks and to show me the difference in the restriction. I lost 60lbs really fast the first time. I gained 25lbs over 6 years. I have lost 26lbs so far. The first time I lost a lb a day the first month. If your not happy get the second opinion.

2 Weeks Post Op... Some issues?

I had my sleeve done 7/20 and I so feel like something it stuck in my throat! It happened when I eat and I take a sip of water which makes it worse so then I end up throwing everything up! This happens yesterday and today so it makes me scared to even eat!!! I had a hernia repaired in my esophagus during sleeve surgery so that may be the cause. And I also haven’t used the bath room in over a week!! I’m going to take some stool softeners and pray for the best!

    Eggs

I had my first scrambled egg this morning, 16 days post-op. No problems.... Just don't tell my dietician. A scrambled egg is in week 5 of my very conservative plan.

    Eggs

4 days post op and you want to move onto soft foods? most at least wait 2 weeks minimum for solids. I did liquids only for 2 weeks post op and after that i was cleared to try some soft foods like scrambled eggs. Which i had and had no issues. Tho i could only eat maybe half an egg. I ended up just buying quail eggs since they are much smaller.

    Average time off from work?

Thank you for this post! It was nice reading how long others took off work. I work from home and I am only taking 3 full days off and then half days the rest of the week. I may just set up my computer right next to my bed so its easier LOL
  20. Hey Y'all! Brand new to Bariatric Pal, and three days post op! I am already down 30.3 pounds since starting the pre op diet, which is super encouraging! Yesterday was probably the hardest pain wise after waking up in terrible pain, on top of acid reflux from hell! Thankfully, got on some antacids prescribed by doctor, and the pain meds helped with the pain immensely! Most of my pain isn't actually from my stomach, but from my biggest incision by my liver. Also trying to stay hydrated, which has been so much harder than I ever thought! So, I actually got the VSG for two completely different reasons. The first is the obvious, to lose weight and get back to a healthier lifestyle! The second... three weeks ago, I was told that I have precancerous and cancerous cells in my stomach. After talking through all of my options with my gastro doctor, my best move was to get the VSG as the cancer cells would be completely eradicated as they were in the portion of my stomach getting removed. Honestly, I had already been researching VSG anyways, so this was kinda a no brainer for me, two for one! This did move up my surgery date from mid September to this past Wednesday, and I am honestly completely okay with that! I didn't want to go through any sort of chemo or radiation, so time was a bit of the essence. Anyone else get/is going to get the VSG for medical reasons beyond weightloss/morbid obesity? 21. To working out faithfully for 5 days a week. Lets go back to that year with a more positive mind,

    SKINNY SZN HERE WE COME!!!!

It's Saturday!!! My fiance and I are out doing yard work and I made the mistake of not staying hydrated before going out so now my body is shaking and weak. I have my pre-op appointment Tuesday, the 2nd and I am trying my hardest to lose another 2 lbs by then.

    OOTD

100 is not normal for the PNW. Used to be once every few years we’d hit that high maybe one day out of a summer. We’ve had 3 100+ days this year, and more predicted this week. Climate change 😡 The date was great, he’s very much Mr. Romantic :)

    Average time off from work?

Amanda, I had one week off, but worked some. I am mostly working from home as well. I requested one week off, but with my office in the spare bedroom and work piling up, I just couldn't stay away. That was my choice. My surgery was on a Thursday and by Monday I was working 4 to 5 hour days. I went back to full time work on Thursday, 1-week post-op. On those half days I probably could have worked full 8-hour days if needed. But wanted to relax a little and use some of the leave I was approved to use.

    Average time off from work?

I took three weeks off but could have gone back after two. I felt fine, just tired. Re: FMLA - it was several years ago so I don't remember exactly, but I don't think I bothered with FMLA. I had a lot of sick leave built up, so I just used that.

    Taking/swallowing pills pain

some surgeons have you crush pills, but fortunately, mine was OK with me swallowing small pills right away (anything the size of a pencil eraser or smaller). I had to wait two or three weeks to manage bigger pills. One of them they said I could hold off on for a couple of weeks, so I did. The other I cut in half (I bought a pill cutter at a pharmacy), so I was able to take it (although not all pills can be cut in half - well, *physically* they can be, but you're not supposed to do it). Just check with your clinic and see what they suggest
