    Post op

I was 242 and am down to 229 and sleeved the same day as you. I am taking in between 50-60 grams of Protein through fairlife milk, nsa carnation instant Breakfast, yogurt, and a little soup. Walking 5 miles per day and can really tell weight loss in my face and waist. I start puréed foods on Tuesday. Dr. won't let me back into the gym for another month. I can't wait to get there!! Fear of Failure

My .02 on this topic, it's mostly mental. Seeing a therapist will help you a great deal, I'd think. It's helpful to learn what triggers you and to get some help with coping mechanisms and some ways to re-train yourself to new, better habits. But keep in mind that things will be markedly different after surgery...at first, quite honestly, you're going to feel crappy and not want to eat at all. Then you'll gradually start introducing foods back into your diet and I found it easy to just not allow the bad foods back in. When you're going to have a 'meal' and it's 3T of food, it's a LOT easier to pick something that will fuel your body and healing vs being able to cram in cups of food so that you can eat a ton of carbs and still get Protein in. I'm not a saint, and I'm only in my 5th month post-op, but it's been easier than I anticipated to NOT eat the crap that contributed to my fat state. Most of those foods aren't even remotely appealing and if I DO eat a bit of them, I usually have a negative physical reaction that inhibits me the next time I think about it. I make sure I've always got good choices in the house....cheese, lean deli meats, yogurt, cottage cheese, canned Beans, tuna, etc. I'm going through a phase right now where meats are NOT sitting well, so I'm on a heavy dairy/legume diet for the time being, and have gone back to using Protein powder twice a day. It's not a linear movement forward at all times, it's a back-and-forth/up-and-down as you retrain your stomach and your head. I say this often, but half of the battle is being ready for the battle and thinking ahead to what you'll need to conquer in order to come out on top. You're doing that now and that alone makes you more ready for your new post-op life than many people. Good luck!
  4. I'm 11 days post op. I had vsg in Mexico, my doctor didn't really give me a good plan, but my coordinator just told me 2 weeks of liquids, 2 weeks purée she said I should be able to eat almost everything except bread, alcohol, at thanksgiving, I've had yogurt egg drop Soup, chiken pea soup, jellos. What has I believed really helped my stomach is kiefer (probiotic) no flavor with a little honey and I feel like it's just helps I have had 2 very small bowel movement. 5. @@amiskinnyyet, Congratulations on your recent surgery! Good question. I am glad you are healing well and feeling good (although tired). It is also good that you are focused on listening to your body, which is a skill that takes a long time to develop but will serve you well! I would caution you that most weight loss surgery patients are still not yet fully in tune with their bodies at this point post-op. It takes a lot of practice, so I would suggest partly listening to your body, and mostly listening to your meal plan. I would suggest following the meal plan and instructions that your surgeon gave you for your post-op diet. Eating eggs and turkey sausage at this point sounds a little premature for most pre-op diets, but your surgeon or nutritionist is really the one to ask. If your body is feeling fatigued from lack of nutrients and eggs and turkey sausage are not yet allowed, you might consider upping your intake of Protein shakes to get the calories and protein you would otherwise get from adding in eggs and sausage. When you do get to real pureed foods after having only liquids, your surgeon or nutritionist might suggest starting with something like yogurt, which is easier than eggs and sausage. Good luck!

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

@sze1109, You have gotten some good advice about going for savory Protein sources instead of sweet ones. You can add unflavored protein powder to broth or buy protein Soups while you are on your liquid diet. For fluids to stay hydrated, you can have Water plain or with lemon or lime juice or sprigs of mint, and decaf tea. Once you get to pureed foods, the sky is the limit! You can add unflavored protein powder to pureed canned green Beans and carrots, pureed watery mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, and pureed cream of wheat or possibly oatmeal (ask your surgeon). You can also get protein from yogurt, pureed egg whites, pureed lean ground turkey or soy crumbles, and pureed tuna while still on the pureed foods diet. Another thought about sugar-free sweet options is to check the label to see which kinds of sweeteners are in the food or beverage. There are so many different kinds now, and it is possible that some, but not all, give you stomach troubles. If you want, you could try to sort out whether you might be able to handle sugar alcohols (not likely), aspartame, sucralose, monk fruit, stevia, or acesulfame potassium. Good luck! You can definitely succeed pre-op and post-op without artificial sweeteners or calorie-free sugar substitutes.

Here it is - my newbie post

@@rolosmom7, I wouldn't worry too much about calories. Focus on Protein first, meet your protein goal daily, and meet your fluids goal daily. My NUT has assured me that those two factors play a much bigger role in fat burning than calorie counting. The full feeling is pretty normal, but I agree with LipstickLady. Don't even eat the bottom half of the bun. Also I found that hamburger and ground meats produce a more full feeling than soft (dark meat) chicken and fish. Try rotisserie chicken dark meat, the thighs are great. Add greek yogurt of a bit of mayo. cheese is another way to get protein in that goes down easy. I get all my protein in starting with a 30g shake in the morning, then the rest of the day I have things such as cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, yogurt, soft chicken, tuna with mayo, fish, soft cooked veggies, and peanut better. Here's a fun and yummy thing I discovered for a high protein snack: 1 or 2 tablespoons natural no sugar added Peanut Butter, next to a tablespoon of sugar free preserves (I love the apricot preserves). Use a small spoon to get a bit of both in each little bite. It takes just like a PBJ sandwich! I also wouldn't worry about a 2 lb gain. Weight can fluctuate quite a bit daily. Keep following the rules and the numbers will start moving again.

    Protein protein protein!

I got tried of Premier Protein really quick... No now I try to drink two cups of Fairlife Fat Free milk with sugar free chorale mixed in... And a scoop of GENEPRO Protein mixed in as well... It's odorless and tasteless. You can also put it in yogurt..I do something similar. I use 5oz fairlife and 5oz fairlife chocolate with 1tbs genepro and 1tbs PB2. Tastes kinda like a Peanut Butter cup. HW 385 SW 359 CW 338 Sleeved 10/5/16

I got past the hungry stage, THANK GOD

Man I'm glad to read this, I just hit puree stage and I've been hungry all of the time too. Even at this stage, it's fortunately improving but not satisfactory. I eat a scrambled egg in the morning and I'm stuffed before finishing it but in one hour, I. Easy for food. If I eat Soup, I can also eat a yogurt.. or if I eat s tuns pouch. I need something else too like cottage cheese and then I freak out thinking omg, I'm eating to much food. The scale isn't moving bc I'm eating to much. When I walk around for exercise. Omg I'm hungry... I think it's the lack of carbs I'm not used to?? And yet not enough Protein bc not at the stage yet So far, I can eat anything too ...not helping! St night i feel hungry and maybe it's emotionally driven buy i feel my stomach... I often have a yogurt Popsicles are my lifesaver!! Anyways. I was thinking of posting about this but worried about being judged so I feel relieved to have discovered this thread

Congratulations!! The gas pain was the worst for me and I felt it in my chest and under my ribs!! Walking helped loads and pain meds.!! Once I got to full liquids I got lots of liquid savory Soups like tomato red pepper, carrot ginger, creamy corn and roasted red peppers, butternut squash, etc mostly the imagine brand bc they are low to non fat and taste great. I added fage Greek plain yogurt for more Protein and creaminess. Some ppl cant handle thickness early on but if you can, those are sone of my suggestions. Happy recovering

    Protein protein protein!

I add a scoop of unjury unflavored Protein powder to everything to boost the protein. I scoop has 10 grams. It's lists cheaper in the canisters than the packets. I scoop in 8oz of 1% milk is 28 grams of protein and 270 calories. I can only drink 4oz at a time. Also add it to bone broth, but it can't be hotter than 140 degrees or it clumps up. I mix it with yogurt and cottage cheese 1scoop per cup ahead of time. Sometimes in V8 juice... I do miss veggies. There are probably other brands of unflavored protein out there.

    Kosher protein shakes?

Unjury is kosher.(dairy). Tastes great too. though I like the unflavored best. Ten grams of protein a scoop. I mix 4 scoops into a quart of yogurt or cottage so it's ready to go!

    snacks

Cottage cheese or greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is often made from milk that has been enriched by boiling off some of its Water content, or by adding extra butterfat and powered milk, It contains a higher Protein density than regular yogurt, which is largely casein protein. Cottage cheese does, too. You can find more about health benefits of cottage cheese at https://wikihomenutrition.com/cottage-cheese-health-benefits/

@@rolosmom7 There's not enough research to fully understand how we will be post-op. I'm only counting protein and fluids right now 2 1/2 weeks) but could only meet protein with supplements (shakes or unflavored protein powder). Why don't you try foods with protein that may not be as filling (yogurt, egg salad, tuna, baked fish) and see if you can eat more frequently. Gaining 2 lbs is not unusual - could be water retention (too much sodium), your period, constipation, etc. 45lbs in 5 weeks is great - I could only hope to lose that much! Congrats!
  19. I am one month post op, on "soft foods". I have been having discomfort with everything except for cottage cheese and yogurt. I'm on soft foods and even very soft chicken and fish gives me pain right where the esophagus meets the stomach opening. It is like a lot of pressure and makes eating difficult. It takes about 15-20 minutes until it passes into the stomach and pain subsides. I was fearful I had a structure. I just spoke to my surgeons nurse, who said it sounds exactly like spasms. Therefore she ordered Levson, a tablet I will take 15 minutes before meals. I was actually sent home with some, but thought it was for nausea. I am glad it's not a stricture. I'll start taking this stuff tonight before dinner and see how it goes.

  21. My surgeon has probably the most laid-back diet advancement plan I've seen, and I wasn't cleared for anything like that for over a month. My instructions: Full liquid (plus yogurt, pudding, etc. so long as there was no fruit/chunks) - 2 weeks. Purees starting @2 weeks and progressing to soft foods as tolerated - 2 weeks. So the end of the 3rd week to the 4th week was my first opportunity for eggs. Though my surgeon said that she has a lot of people who can't tolerate eggs that early. I couldn't until I was on solid foods for a couple of weeks. During this period I could start trying ground beef, tuna, shredded chicken, etc. but only after I'd worked up to it through purees and softer food. After 4 weeks I was cleared for a full diet, but was cautioned to add foods from soft/moist end first, working my way SLOWLY up to the harder/drier foods. I was warned that some meats like steak might not be tolerable for much longer. I had a egg/sausage/cheese taquito at about 6 weeks working through this plan. Most surgeons have a much stricter and slower food progression. I'd be utterly amazed if your surgeon would approve anything like this at 8 days post.
  22. I've never bought any bariatric foods from here or any other place. Doing just fine and my grocery bill is tiny even feeding two adults. I don't eat much any pre-packaged/prepared foods after I realized they were part of the problem (most are crammed with fat/carbs/sodium). I cook from scratch with whole food sources about 75% of the time. Things like marinara sauce or turkey pepperoni I do buy prepared, but I get the lowest carb/highest Fiber versions, and avoid high sodium, and other questionable things. I read nutrition labels of everything. It also works to help me put things back if I'm suddenly craving them and want to buy - one look at a package containing 50 grams of carbs per serving and I can't stick that sucker back on the shelf fast enough! I buy lots of chicken and fish. We eat on a chicken drumsticks or thighs at least once a week, and I usually do them in the slow cooker so I can create broth from the fat/bones and then make a lovely Soup with it later in the week. We eat lots of veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, turnip greens and spinach, okra, brussel sprouts, (not so much of the carby veggies like carrots, potatoes, peas). eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, Beans (kidney, black beans, pintos, great Northern), and brown rice. High fiber wheat bread on occasion. Pork rinds are a great snack substitute when I'm desperate for the crunch of chips (but eaten sparingly since they are so high in sodium). I have a very large variety of awesome recipes that are low carb, high Protein and moderate fat.

    Dinner?

My dinner last night was an egg with mushroom and sausage. I had the same thing for breakfast. Lunch was 1/2 of a large chili from Wendy's. I usually have Greek yogurt for breakfast. A favorite lunch is shrimp with old bay and lemon juice topped with a slice of havarti cheese and 2 slices of tomato then it goes in the microwave. Essentially a shrimp melt without the bread. Bacon is awesome! Bacon with tomato and lettuce... I did shrimp with bell peppers, onion, garlic and a light orange sauce a few nights ago.

    Changing to pureed help

Refried beans with cheese and sour cream, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta bake, sugar free pudding, scrambled eggs, egg salad...
  25. What is everyone eating for dinner? Are you really eating a meal, albeit small, or is "dinner" a misnomer? I am 7 weeks post-op and still struggling to hit my Fluid and Protein goals every day. I eat a slice of cheese for Breakfast, then have a Protein shake throughout the morning. I usually cannot finish it before it's time to stop drinking before lunch. I bring 3T of protein for lunch (either leftovers from my husband's dinner the previous evening, or something like tuna or chicken salad) and a couple T of greek yogurt (80 cal Dannon), but I can't finish either of these. More drinking during the afternoon, maybe another protein shake or maybe just liquid. Dinner turns out to be a couple of tablespoons of protein... and then I'm full. TOO full, uncomfortably so. My surgeon and nut both say just keep trying, so I do, but I'm really struggling. Honestly, this isn't what I expected. I want to eat a meal. Not huge, generous portions of high carb, high fat foods, but just a balanced meal. Each evening I make myself a little plate, with a few T of protein and a couple T of something else (veggies mostly, but sometimes mashed or baked white or sweet potato). The problem is, I can't eat it. By the time I eat my protein first, I'm more than done. I am eating protein and nothing else, and it's not making me happy. Does this ever get better, or is having a "real meal" really never happen? I expected it would be hard at the beginning, but thought this would be getting easier with the passing weeks, not harder. I'm really feeling pretty demoralized right now.
