  1. Had a checkup with my Primary Physician on Monday. He was extremely pleased with my lab report. A1C 5.1, cholesterol 184, blood pressure 120/76. He asked me if I felt my weight loss surgery was worth it.. I told him absolutely. He agreed. He said at my age and the weight I was prior to my surgery he worried that I might have a stroke or have some really bad issues with diabetes. So, in this post I want to tell everyone that no matter what you do to improve your health, it is so important to take control. I personally chose lapband because I didn't want to undergo a major surgical procedure at this stage of my life. I will be grateful to my surgeon forever. He has been so supportive and he is conservative with fills. I am so grateful that I now have mobility and energy to enjoy life . I am going to Alaska in a few weeks and will enjoy the cruise and all of the activites . I believe I will be able to eat healthy and stay on track but I'm not really worried about it.

    Checkup with Primary Physician

Way to go ! I wish more Dr.s would recommend WLS to their patients as a possible cure for obesity. You would make a great role model, for anybody, but especially older women who have the hardest time with weight loss !!! Congratulations again !!!! Way to go !!!
  3. Thank you Libby58. I will quit worrying what the 1 cc will do in there. I'm not hungry and don't have any problem being on the post-fill liquid diet. So whether it is in there or not, maybe it will get my weight loss going again. :seeya: Thank you and Good Journey:cool2: Maggie
  4. Hi Ga Sleevers! I am so glad that I received the invite to this group! I am almost 3 years post op and I feel like I have failed myself. My 3 year anniversary is on February 12th and I have only lost 32 pounds. Everything was going great for the first 6 months. The weight just fell off all on it's own. But after some time it was as if I had never had the surgery. I mean I still couldn't (and still can't ) eat any significant amount, but since I had surgery in Mexico I had no support group around me that kept my mind in the game. If you do not surround yourself with peoole that have been through what you have been through you forget and you pick up bad habits again. I just finished eating two chocolate chip cookies, my gym stopped teaching body pump, so I have not been to the gym in months and I jsut in general have started feeling like a fatty again and actually gained 20 pounds since my lowest weight post surgery. I need some help!
  5. Hello all! I was banded in 2006. Not even 4 months banded and I got pregnant and then pregnant again lol. I was told I couldnt get pregnant...they were wrong . My kids take up most or all my time. One of my children has special needs and his needs were being met first. Now its my time.. I hated the band since I had it put in . I lost 40lbs kept 20 off. I always had issues with too much fill not enough fill. Some days were so bad I couldnt even drink Water. I was fed up. Recently I had my band unfilled. It was terrible in my opinion. I dont think I researched it enough. I've made the decision to do the sleeve. I've been struggling like most to lose weight on my own. My questions are now what to do? I Still have the band. Do I go back to my original surgeon or can I seek a new one? What do I need to do? Do I have to do that whole process again like lap band? Which I don't mind doing. Will my insurance give me a hard time? I thank you all in advance! T
  6. Hi. You are not alone. I was banded in 2007. I lost 60 wonderful pounds. I was still obese, but it made a big difference for me and I was happy with the weight loss and new found freedom. I think I had the same fill experience as you....fill-unfill-fill-can't swallow my own spit-unfill-eat every and any thing-fill-can't eat anything except slider foods-weight gain. It has been a constant struggle. Once I learned how to eat around my band, it was all downhill. My surgeon advised me to revise to sleeve last year (so you might want to start there if you still trust your surgeon and have his/her support), but I resisted. I didn't want another surgery and I didn't want to acknowledge that the band and I didn't work well together. We (the band and I) failed. It's been hard for me to accept. Finally, September 2012 I started really considering a revision. I went to another "initial" seminar (with the same surgeon) and heard everything all over again. After 5 years, I need a refresher. Long story short (is it too late for a short story? lol), I am approved. I had to get medical clearance again which was no problem at all. My doctor wrote it up better than I could have myself. I did not do psych again, but I did the NUT visit. I was approved so quickly (2-3 days) that it was further reassurance that I needed to move forward with the revision. Approval is easier for those who have been compliant with getting fills, says my surgeon. I got approved, but I put everything on hold, because I was not mentally ready to do it, but I am now. I'm calling my surgeon's office next week to ask them to schedule me. I hope to be in the April Sleever Achievers club. Bottom line, start at the beginning. Pick up the phone and call your surgeon and tell them what your thinking then go from there. Also, call your insurance co. Please update. I will too. Good luck.
  7. Im 5 almost 6 week post op...I lost 35 lbs I was 251 then 214 lost it with in 3 weeks. I got on the scale last week and I weighed in at 217... -.- not to happy but I have been going to the gym this past week too I do 30 minutes cardio and do weights for 30 minutes and then in the pool for 15 could I gain muscle and that's why I gained...I'm kinda bumped
  8. I cannot believe it. Today, I got on the scale and I weighed 247 pounds! May 26 is my 3 month surgery-versary! I've lost 50 pounds in less than 3 months (I didn't have to do a pre-op diet). How amazing is this? I can only imagine where I will be in 6 more months. This surgery has been life-changing for me. I feel soo much better. My clothes that were too tight fit me now and clothes that used to fit me are hanging off me. I can actually work 12 hours on my feet and not be in a ton of pain, unlike when I was almost 300 pounds. I still have a long road ahead of me but This Feels Amazing! My goal is to get to, at least, 170 pounds. I would like to weigh 150 pounds though. We will see how I feel when I get there. =)

Most individuals that undergo surgery find that their taste buds change. There are a variety of Protein shakes on the market available. It is important to find one that you can tolerate. So experiment. Immediately after surgery, the primary divers are meeting your protein, Vitamins and fluids requirements. Meals are secondary. Your body is converting stored fat into energy. Thus you lose weight.

    How much can you eat?

Truly, I think the biggest myth, and one which this board is really bad at perpetuating is that there is a perfect, set amount of food that is right for everyone, and that everyone's bodies and bands will behave the same. It SHOULD be like this, it SHOULD be like that, argh, drives me nuts. Firstly, you've just had your first fill, it can take a few fills to get to the point where you cant eat certain foods and small amounts really fill you. You may never NEED to get there you know. I never have. I can eat everything, and only get problems if I eat too fast, dont chew or do something stupid. Take Sunday morning. I ate Weetbix bites - little wheat Cereal pieces with fruit in them. I didnt add milk, we were low and I left it for my kids to have on their cereal. 20 minutes later I had my cup of coffee. Picture dry cereal in your stomach and pouring a liquid on top. Lol, within five minutes I thought I was going to explode, and spent my daughters swimming lesson barfing in the toilets with loads of little kids all around saying "mummy, what is that lady doing?". I heard morning sickness mentioned and didnt dispel anyone of that notion, lol. If you're losing weight, you cannot be eating too much, its a simple as that. Just be sure never to eat to the point of being really full. Other than that, just dispel all the SHOULD notions you have about this. It will work for you in a totally individual way and if you choose healthy options and fill when you find you've stopped losing weight or are beginning to feel excessive appetite, you will be fine. Eating what you have at this stage is not unusual and it will probably not stop you losing weight.

    299.5 Under 300!!!

For the first time since 1992 I weight under 300LBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is so exciting . I thought this day would never come. My first serious goal has been met. Next goal 280. Not sure what I am going to do for a reward, but I did just book a Smokey Mountain vacation during fall colors. That sounds like a good thing to call my treat. HItting 299 has taken me MUCH longer than I expected. But, the fact is I have MADE IT

    This is me...

For my journal readers here is a bit more about me: I am 31 and the mother of two children - my daughter is 14 years old and my son is 10. I'm newly married *3rd and last time!* to a man who is 18 years my senior. I was first married at 16 - to my DD father - divorced by 19 and remarried at 22. That one didn't work after 7 years of marriage. I'm married again - more secure now, more mature, more sure of myself. The kids have had a hard time adjusting to the change... I have a day job and also own my own online company. (www.providerwatch.com and www.findadaycare.com) I enjoy living in Western Washington for the weather, the green, and the fact I can get in the car and drive somewhere. NOT like when I lived in Anchorage, Alaska! I write - poetry mostly. I love music - listening to it cause I don't have a musical bone in my body. I love to read - anything from fiction to interesting non fiction. I think I'm more serious than I should be.... From the thread "Why are you Fat?" My weight gain began about 9 years ago - it was a slow process that began with excessive drinking - high calorie drinks -depression...I gained about 30 pounds those first few years, lost some and have steadily increased reaching my all time high - currently 255. I quit drinking a year ago - eat more to replace it - and have worked at a desk job for 3 years. That combined with no physical activity. I ENJOY food, its emotional for me. When I cook and enjoy a good meal, it feels good deep down. But this good feeling is followed by guilt and remorse. When I feel full - I feel guilty. I think about being fat from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed at night and sometimes in my sleep. The bottom line is I overeat, food is emotional satisfaction, and I sit on my a$$ at work all day.

    Feeling Alone

No, you are not nuts. Don't discount your feelings and you are indeed breaking up with food, but trust me, you will learn that food is NOT your best friend. It is your crutch maybe, but certainly not your best friend. It's what got you to this point, it's what got all of us to this point.. friends don't do that. It's like the old friends don't let friends drive drunk.. LOL (well, I tried! ) Let your husband be supportive as he knows how, you will find if he's supportive now, he will probably be even more so afterwards. Mourn food, it's ok to do that and start a new kind of relationship with it... Accept his support the way he is offering it, it sounds like he's trying. He probably doesn't know exactly what you are going through, how could he? He's not in your shoes..My husband has always been thin too and never struggled with is weight... BUT he saw me struggle, he saw me cry, he saw me hate myself and go up and down for years.... he shared that pain with me and he was there to hold me and remind me that he loves me for me too during those times. That was support! I was sleved 11/15 and I was very scared, but I'm doing great and I am glad I did it. Hopefully you will too. Feel free to reach out anytime for support, there is a lot of support here that was given to me and I'm happy to give it to you as well! Hang in there!! You are not alone, we are all in this together and understand!

It doesn't really matter, just set a weight you desire to be. Many people surpass that. Dream come true!
  16. I am in the same boat, okay without the cesarean section part. I finish my 6 months of weight loss classes in April and was told my surgery could be in June.

    Surgery videos.

I've been watching videos of the VSG surgery, and I am fascinated. It is really helpful for me to actually see what the procedure is, what is involved, what it looks like afterward, and to get a view of the anatomy in the area. I think I would recommend these videos if one isn't squeamish, I think it is good to know what's going to happen to help one make the best decision for oneself. It is really a big hassle to be having the surgery so far away - it's a 1.25 hour drive each way to my surgeon's office, and I find myself having to make that journey sometimes two days in a row. Not easy on my elderly vehicle, but at least I have audiobooks and podcasts to listen to while I go. I do have to say, before I got this surgeon, my PCP told me I could get a surgeon anywhere in my Northern California area, which could have meant driving 4 hours each way in some cases, so I AM thankful; in fact, I'm pretty sure this is the closest surgeon I could have had. How hard is it to go to a party when one is on a diet? So difficult. I went to an annual Fried Chicken Day party on Saturday, and, boy, it was hard not to graze. I even made an Apple Cheddar Pie for the occasion, and I had to taste that, of course. I have been steadily losing weight over the last month or so, and I only have 4 more lbs to lose to meet the requirement, but things like this may set me back quite a bit. I need to buckle down. I have a little less than a month to lose that 4 pounds, and I can't keep using special occasions as an excuse.

    WOW so many people!

Hi Tina, Congrats on the weight loss so far! I hope you can get your port taken care of soon and get the fill. Looking forward to getting to know you!
  21. Hi everyone! I am so happy to have found this forum! I need advice/help/encouragement please! I had the VSG a month ago and I lost 26 lbs in the first 2 weeks and nothing since. In fact, I have gained 2 pounds this week. I am eating almost nothing - I can't because I have constant nausea and indigestion and don't feel like eating. I feel like I have a lump in my upper stomach. I am taking Nexium but it's not helping much. I want to lose about 60 lbs still and am not too worried about how long it will take just that I keep losing. Any advice? This plateau is making me regret my decision to do the sleeve. Thanks! :biggrin0:

    Band to bypass disappointment.....

My doc made me wait 6 months between band removal and bypass cuz he said if he'd done it when he did the band removal he would have had to have made a bigger pouch. Ack!!! Fingers crossed its just a flue and all is okay!!! HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 231.4

    Please help any suggestions?!

The best thing you can go is GET STARTED NOW! Pick a way of eating that involves foods you like and that you think you can stick with for an extended period of time that will help you reduce calories and lose weight. I chose low carb/high protein/high healthy fat (largely because that is how I knew I would have to eat post-op after the transition and healing period). I lost 99 pounds during that time before the surgery. It has made ALL the difference in the world for me. I am convinced that I have responded to the surgery and its requirements much better because I took the time to lose all the weight pre-op. (And I have lost 16 pounds in the 12 days since my surgery on top of that.) Good luck as you continue your journey!

Is this normal fills every 6 weeks

This does not sound normal to me. Usually you are tight in the first few days (from swelling, etc) and loosen as time goes on. I'm not an expert since only having one fill (getting my 2nd tomorrow) but from what i read that's how is works. Your doc is to be working for you not the other way around. Is there another doc you can go to since she seems to be all about the money??? P.S. Way to go on the weight loss despite not having restriction!!!
  25. I am early in the process still but this is such a crazy emotional journey! I went to my first appointment with the surgeon at the end of February and so far have had 1 sleep study, 1 nut appointment, blood work (9 vials), upper gi/barium swallow, ultrasound, psychiatric evaluation and information session! I have done all of this still with the fear that I may not be approved! I have struggled with my weight for 20 years (and I am 33). I have lost and gained so many times over those years I am surprised that my body has survived! I have never had a problem losing it just doesn't stay off and when it comes back it usually comes back with some extra "friends" (more pounds). Right now I am 245lbs (5'7" tall) with a BMI of just under 40. I found out I do have sleep apnea and will be going for my second study next week. I am a mixture of emotions. I want this surgery! I NEED THIS SURGERY! I am sick of being fat. I am sick of not having enough energy to play with my kids. I am sick of constantly thinking and worrying about my weight! I have a few more steps, last one being my final nut appointment on May 21st and they we will submit to insurance! Fingers crossed! I love this board it has given me so much knowledge on what to expect! Look forward to sharing my journey with all of you!
