    I feel discouraged.

I had my VS done in March 2019 I am 7 months out and have hypothyroid. I have lost 109 lbs and can still only eat 600 calories a day and I’m not hungry. My nutritionist does not go by calories she told me to go by protein, water, fat, carbs and sugar intake. I do 60/80 grams of protien, 90 oz water, 10 grams of fat, 35 grams of carbs and no more than 10 grams of sugar a day n I am doing well.

    Can't stop losing weight

I totally get it. The body dysmorphia is real and normal. Sometimes I feel a little lost - like where did the "other me" go? Where is she? But she is here in a new funny looking body. It really does take a while for the brain to catch up with the physical changes. But nothing beats a size 10 over a size 24!!!! I am trying to learn how to embrace and value all my new sharpei wrinkles and folds. I think I look really old, but others say I look younger, so go figure. Maybe it is because I have a lot more pep in my step now - not dragging myself around on limping knees. Hang in there. You will gradually morph from the 267 mentally fat girl into the little girl you really are and were really meant to be! You are a butterfly that has just emerged from the lumpy old cocoon. You have to give it time to let your wings dry!

    Any September Sleevers?

Congratulations that's wonderful. I can wait to join you in dropping pounds. I've lost 10 lbs in the last 10 days from this preop stuff. I heard about the walking. The nurse in the surgeon office said they will have me up and about in the hospital. Thank you for the well wishes😁

Medicaid to be cut off 8/31

I wanted to give an update! I cut hours at work ad submitted pay stubs to be covered by 10/1 and they made an error on their end in our family size, so i had to resubmit some information to be re-processed. So after two VERY VERY long months, I was finally approved for medicaid coverage starting on 11/1! Durring these two months i paid out of pocket for my weigh-ins ($90 a pop). All I have left to do is see my nutritionist one more time and have my endoscopy done & we'll be ready to submit paperwork! It's been frustrating but worth it!
  11. Pea protein is not sweetened and is good with soups and broths. You can find unsweetened whey protein at Spouts. I can't remember the name, however. It does have some natural vanilla flavoring, but nothing artificial. It goes well in smoothies and yogurt. Bone broth is the highest in protein as far as broths go. I think the chicken/beef/turkey combo flavor is the best. It has 10 gm protein per serving.

Gastric Sleeve after 50 (Senior Sleevers)

You can exercise more, change up what you're eating, or realize that about every 10 days your body will stall and get used to the new weight loss then continue. I read that it is hard on your body to lose a lot of weight, so I figure it needs a rest. Anything around 8 pounds a month is good anything more is a bonus. Just remember we didn't get here overnight and we won't lose it overnight either.
  13. I just now hit goal weight at 8 months, 5 days post-op. Okay so I missed goal by 5 days, but got there. The most important part for those of us over 50 to keep in mind is that it might take longer, but we CAN get there in due time. Now I’m striving for my stretch goal, which is another 10 pounds gone. Honestly if it takes me 3 more months I don’t care. I’m at goal and I’m ECSTATIC about it.

    No side effects

Hi, I had my surgery the end of July. I did not have any issues with my surgery. Just minor soreness at the incision site where my stomach was removed. It only bothered me when I moved wrong. My gall bladder surgery recovery was worse. Best of luck!! 5'4" Starting weight 297 VSG on 7/31/19 Surgery wt: 266 CW 228 GW 135 Sent from my [samsung Galaxy] using BariatricPal mobile app

    Triathlon done!!!!! Woo hoo!

I had a good foundation of walking already established, but had not swum or ridden a bike in decades! I only had 2 months to get ready. So I started swimming - oh my goodness! With losing weight, I also lost my buoyancy! My legs sank and I couldn't kick hard enough. With a rotater cuff injury in my right shoulder, I just resigned myself to breast stroke rather than freestyle, which was utterly exhausting. I tried to swim 2-3 times a week. The first time, I nearly drowned twice! I tried to ride my daughter's bike, but because of stiffness in my hips and knees, I simply cannot swing my leg over the saddle and I couldn't get it over the bar, either. Pitiful. So getting on and off was a challenge and I didn't feel safe. So I bit the bullet and bought my own bike - a hybrid with a step through frame (ie: girl's bike). It is wonderful. It is very ergonomically correct for me and very comfortable. Most of all, I can get on and off safely. I bought the brightest possible strobing tail and head lights, and attached a water bottle to the handle bars with a long straw so I didn't have to reach down with one hand for a water bottle. I started riding - 5 miles, then 7 miles, then 10 miles, then 15 miles - at least twice a week. 3 weeks before the event , I did all three on the same day - spread out over the day. 2 weeks before, I did all three again on the same day, but more or less back to back. On the day of the event, I did fine. I was more mentally stressed than physically stressed. I was not exhausted or overly tired at all. The biggest hurdle was nutrition. I had to up my calories per day, and that was pretty hard. I had to give up intermittent fasting, as I needed the breakfast time to get more calories in. This was not comfortable and I felt like I was over eating the whole time. I could not use high carb stuff or energy drinks, as I was a afraid of dumping. The best thing I finally settled on was to drink a protein smoothies several hours before the event (300 calories, 35 gm protein.) Then water and RX bars throughout the event. Each RX bar has 210 calories and 12 gm protein. I think I ate 3 of them and it was fine. My stomach was not overloaded and I was comfortable and had plenty of energy. Now I see that I have a lot of room to improve my swimming stroke, my biking technique, and also maybe experiment with race walking. (My orthopedic doctor forbids me to run on my artificial knee, in order to save it for as many years as possible.) With a baseline level of fitness now, I think I may do a couple of these triathlons a year, just for motivation and to see if I can improve my times. It was definitely a milestone for me, and actually a lot of fun.
  17. Super weird question. But has anyone ever NOT felt all the side affects from Sleeve surgery? I had VSG done Monday 10/07/19 I feel minimal pain from my Incisions unless I lay wrong or try to pick something heavy up. I’m not hungry really ever, have yet to feel Nauseous or overly full. I feel a small difference when I drink too fast but that’s it. I’m kinda scared that things are going to well that I will then experience all of the side effects at once.

    Monthly loss amount

I personally find it really toxic to compare my weight loss to others on this forum because we're all so different. I just get discouraged! That being said I'm losing about 10 pounds a month and am 6.5 months post gastric bypass. My team is pleased with my progress. Don't worry too much, just exercise and follow your team's plan for you, and you'll do fine. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Did It Work?

This post is common - I have no idea how you can eat a 14 oz steak after this surgery I am lucky if i can eat 4oz. You are at a crossroads, same position most of us hit. You are head hungry not really hungry, sorry seems brutal but once the shock and awe was over you are losing the battle in your head not your stomach. My view is you need a nutritionist or a deep study into nutrition. The surgery is a tool it shrunk your stomach by 85% and removed the nerves that made you feel hungry. Couple of things you did not mention you should be filling up on Protein Shakes Loaded with vitamins and supplements. This will make you feel incredible without calories. I am out about 120 days and there is not a chance in hell i would try and eat steak or any solid hard food. I suggest you set a daily routine - If you read around here there are a ton of people who have posted there Routine. here is mine set by a Paid Nutritionist 1. Breakfast - 10 oz protien shake 30g protien 20 Calories, Two heaping Yogurt spoon fulls Vitamin Powder and Supplement Powder. I also add a few pieces of fruit for taste - 8 blueberrys or 3 cut peaches or a few strawberrys- You drink this over 30 min and no way you are hungry! 2. 10:00 Am - A Protien Bar - High end good quaility Bar - If i need it usually dont 3. Lunch - This is a tough one for me due to work so usually - Handful of peanuts, granola or maybe some chuncked fish or turkey 4. 2:00 Here comes another Protien shake - Usually add Peanut butter or some other funky Yogurt etc 5. 5:30 By dinner i am whipped so really have no desire to eat, usually skip about half the time - Scallops, Shrimp, Fish or a simple protein, Side is usually some small veggie 6. 40oz water a day - I CAN SAY I HATE WATER BUT IT IS A KEY TO FLUSHING OUT AND KEEPING THE KETOSIS GOING. i have this down where i can adjust my loss from .05 pounds per day up to 3/4 a day - I am also very active so that really helps me out. Summary - You have completed step one the surgery - Step two is the diet and intake - The mind is brutal on this surgery and head games to me are harder then the dang surgery to me - You said size i have gone from a size 50 pants to 42 currently and this is the reward! We all were food addicted no doubt - THe US is freakin disgusting with how we eat, Huge portions, all processed and filled with sugar. Good luck and you will get it - I have stalled a few times due to Vodka and M and M's so its not like your alone
  20. Oct 12 update. Doing okay had some random sharp pains in the right hand side so started taking Tylenol again and it has improved. Had an issue with the incisions so went to back to surgeon and spoke to his pa. Turns out i was allergic to the glue..they removed all the glue and put steri strips on the open wounds. Still sooo itchy...trying not to scratch. I feel I can eat too much. I’m on the puréed stage and I ate 3 oz of beans and I know we shouldn’t eat more than 1.5 at a time. My weight loss has been slow. Most people Lose 10 lbs a week per my anecdotal research on this board. On oct 1 I weight 284 and today I weighed 277. Of course on Oct 2 I weight 294, lol. I will weight on Oct 15 which will be exactly 2 weeks. I’m happy with the loss, but really want one of these 10 lb weeks. Still really happy as I’m down 30 lbs from my high of 307 🙂 So far getting protein in no problem. Getting 64 oz of liquid a bit harder need to step it up......
  21. Hi! I had other major surgeries in the past and I was more awake and mobile with this surgery. I had 2 other procedures along with the gastric bypass but this is what I remembered: 1. The hospital will give you pain medication intravenously and it really did help. However, I was released with Tylenol with codeine and it didn’t help at all. If you need something stronger, talk to your doctor. 2. The nurses will teach you how to roll and sit up in the hospital (and that is still tough for me). I read that you should bring a small pillow for the trip home and keep it with you at home. It helps to minimize tummy pain if you sneeze or cough. Walk as much as possible to relieve tummy gas from the surgery. Ask your doctor if you can take Gas-X to help with relief. I had pain I both shoulders and was told that it was gas. It lasted for about 3 days after the surgery. 3. Prior to the surgery, buy your broth, protein shakes, whey powder, sugar free jello, protein water, & 1 ounce plastic cups to pour your drinks into (when you drink the protein shakes, water, protein water, broth, etc). You will need to sip as much as your tiny stomach will allow - like it’s your job- from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep at night. Drinking liquids became easier for me around day 10. 4. Prior to the surgery, buy what you will need according to your doctor’s diet schedule in case you can’t go anywhere for 2 weeks. Make sure you try everything and like it before your surgery. 5. I bought the pre-made protein shakes so I wouldn’t have to make the shakes when I got home. I also bought the 1 oz cups and some disposable popsicle zip sleeves from Amazon. I put some of my protein water in the popsicle sleeves and made popsicles out of them, which helped a lot. 6. Walk around the house & keep hydrated as much as possible to avoid blood clots & dehydration. 7. When it’s ok to shower, be sure to do it when you are not too tired because it takes a lot out of you and you will need to hydrate after you are done. Some of the steri-strips on your stitches or staples may come off in the shower within 5 to 14 days of surgery. I was told not to worry but every doctor is different. Call your doctor if you have any concerns. Take it easy on yourself and try not to be a hero. Your body needs time to heal. I know it’s a lot but this is what helped me!

    Anxiety after sleeve

Gastric Bypass (with Hernia Repair, and Gallbladder Removal) on 10/2. I still have tummy pain but besides the 2 bouts (tears) I’ve had, it’s going pretty well. On 10/15, my doctor will let me know if I can have puréed food and I’m really looking forward to it!!

    Did It Work?

Me too! My appetite has shrunk remarkably. Even if I think I am hungry, after a few bites, I feel full. It is a bit frustrating that when you are eating something that tastes delicious, but you can't take another bite. I do love a rare eye fillet! I have learnt my lesson though. If I try to eat more when my tiny tummy pouch is full, I will end up in the bathroom vomiting it all out. I probably eat/drink the wrong foods sometimes (who doesn't love a nice sauvignon blanc?!) which has slowed my weight loss, but I am happy where am, and my goal. For reference, I am an Australian size 12, which is an American size 8. I want to get to Australian size 10, USA size 6.

    Did It Work?

I am from Australia, so we think in kilos, not pounds. So you have lost about 9kg in a month. That's ok, I think. I am surprised that you can eat steak and sides. At that 1st month point, I was still restricted to Optifast twice a day (surgeons orders) and struggled to get through one! I lost 10kg in the first month (22 pounds). Even now, I have a hard time getting through a 200 gram steak (which I think is 7 oz?), and can never eat sides. I usually order an entree from a menu as my main. Luckily, if I can't finish my meal, I have a husband who can! I am 18 months out and have lost 40kg (about 90 pounds). Still got 10 kg (22 pounds) to go until I reach "wedding weight!! But I am quite tall at 175cm so everyone is telling me not to lose any more. I have done it slow and steady, and am delighted that I have no loose skin at all! Best wishes. It's early days yet for you. Keep positive!
