Wow, thanks for your note... really describes 'where' I am as well. I can't imagine being 5'3" (I always have folks say 'but you carry your weight well'). I guess I am lucky I don't have high blood pressure, but I have everything else... I have given up on trimming my toe nails, putting on my socks (and shoes) is a daily nightmare. I work in a warehouse environment and my feet hurt constantly, with recent weight gains I try to sit whenever possible... I keep extra deodorant in my locker as I will start to sweat profusely at the drop of a hat. Thank god I have basic strength due to my size so I can move heavy things (part of my job). Are you still on any of the meds? Curious about the testosterone (I take it to) and there is zero "drive" (another down side, it affects 'everything' not just one aspect. Also find I isolate pretty heavily.I took the shots but am on the gel form (I really hated the shots lol, insulin shots are a breeze, the big honkin' testosterone shots are not!!) I realize the band is a tool, part of why I am looking seriously at this. Do you still see food sitting there and hear it 'calling' to you? How do you handle that? smile, feel like I have met a kindred soul (is it me or is the ratio of men banders to female about 9:1?)

    Women Only Question

I went from a (tight) 40DD to a perfect 34-36 full C my orignial size...but me and the girls have been through a lot together LOL. 2 kids, 2 biopsy's, and weight gain/loss, but I'm so glad to finally see them again after 21 years. I LOVE my size, just wish I could give them a lift (sigh).
  3. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh and here is my update from today on obesityhelp regarding my platelet counts and prednisone therapy: PLATELET COUNT - 121,000 WOOT WOOT. . . The Prednisone worked beautifully, and all the crankiness, little weight gain, increased hunger ARE ALL WORTH THE END RESULT ! ! ! "Thank you" just isn't enough for me to say at this point for all y'alls support and prayers/good thoughts/swinging chickens ! ! ! We were hoping for a jump to at least 85,000 and here we are at almost normal level. Just for reference, I started off around 70,000. Again, without VSG this would not have been possible, and I'm elated and beyond blessed once again that I chose the "right" surgery for me, for all the "right" reasons ! ! ! I'm cleared for the epidural, and will be awake for Tatum's arrival ! ! !
  4. Side effect of sleeve, I have to get all new winter shoes. My old ones do not fit, I literally walk right out of them. I rather replace for weight loss rather than weight gain.

  5. Thanks- as to my doc(s), my endo is one of the best (I am told that other doctors will only use him and he is on staff with 5 hospitals) so who he recommended for surgery has to be good. On the surgeons website he was voted 'best of (mycity) several times. One consistent thing I have read is use an EXPERIENCED surgeon, this guys sounds top notch (in fact in making an appt last week the first available was Dec 1 (one concern I have there, is reading that folks 'never see their surgeon again...). For me its all about the 'vibe'- if I like him- thats good enough for me. As to work- I work in a warehouse environment. I am the 'grunt' for my department and regularly life 75 lbs. (tho with the weight gain I have slowed down, and also realize if I get hurt...who cares (i.e. if i wrench my back out, who is that helping). Once a decision is made (about lapbanding) I will talk to management. They have been very understanding about the diabetes (well they have to but...). So I will do what I need to do. As to the pups, I was at the dog park and a lady literally abandoned the scottie in front of me, walked out, didn't look back. I think it was meant to be. He is a year and a half old and being diabetic really gets me up and at em. We go to the dog park at least 4-5 times a week (if if were just me and he older bassetish I would be much more sedentary... I have an appt with my primary care on Tuesday. I called my insurance company, lapband IS covered, 80% + deductable.
  6. Not knocking it ! And I know kids play a big part in weight gain. But if you can't keep it off, then this is where it comes in, and works. I lost weight, kept it off then one day gained most of it back. Old habits are hard to beat. If this is you then give it a thought. If not ! You are very lucky. Good Luck with your research, Shirley.
  7. You really have to do what you think is right for you. I know my weight issues started in my early 20's, when I got married and stop being active and that roller coaster ride with the weight is awful. I am "slightly older" than you :-), but serioulsy I felt the same way just so drained from my weight being a constant issue on my mind every single day. I did this too be healthy now, wish they would have had it when I was younger because I missed a lot of years just living, because of my weight. In your heart and head you know what is going to make you happy. It is a risk, life is full of them. I pray and leave it God's hands, but I wanted off the roller coaster of weight gain. Good luck I hope everything works out. My BMI was 34 and it was way lower post baby, but I gained the weight back and didn't want to start that all over again.
  8. OMG, from the blogs I am reading, it seems as if everone is having difficulty. It is nice to know that I am not alone. I am not sure if it is the time of year (the holidays are quickly approaching) or just that I am wanting a little of the forbidden foods. Friday was a very stressful day for me at work, so I found I was snacking ... on nuts ,.,. on the fat content. Then I ate egg foo yung for lunch (just 1/3 of what was served) but decided to finish off the 2/3's for dinner. What a mistake. Then Saturday was no better...don't even ask about the french onion soup. Thankfully, I realized the error of my 2-days way and got back on track yesterday ... having protein shakes and some meat with plenty of water. Am feeling better. But, I am wondering if something is going on with just about everyone, because we all seem to be suffering some type of setback, be it weight gain, plateauing, not being able to stick to the rules, etc. JUST REMEMBER, WE ARE ON THE JOURNEY TOGETHER. Don't lose sight of the finish line. Even the longest journey starts with a small step. WE CAN DO IT.
  9. This is so frustrating. I have been working on developing the habits neccesary after my surgery which includes no water 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after a meal. I haven't been drinking 15 minutes before and during and I have been making it about 10- 15 minutes after before I have to drink something. This is a big accomplishment for me. I have also been working on chewing my food very well. I still have to not allow myself to get distracted and do better with it when I eat alone. I will work on that too. I noticed that some of my changes seem to have resulted in me gaining weight. For example, now that I am focused on being sure that I get breakfast, my metabolism is higher so I am hungrier much more often throughout the day. Also, I have noticed that when I don't drink water during a meal, I need to eat much more to get the same feeling. I don't know what to do! I am bigger than I have ever been in my life and it only seems to be getting worse when I combine these habits. Not sure how to work on this.

    Women Only Question

I went from a solid, perky, happy 40/42 D/DD (depending on the bra cut) to a TINY 32B. The trend I've noticed since being around and watching other women's progress is those who were well-endowed before weight gain set in, they were able to keep a lot of their volume. For those of us who only had big boobs because we were fat, lose them to a much more drastic degree. I remember being a b/c cup in middle and high school before I got fat so I'm pretty sure I just wasn't meant to have big boobs at a normal weight.
  12. Gained another pound. I hope I don't hear about the weight gain when I go for my fill Wednesday.

  13. Hi all! I'm 3 1/2 months sleeved, I've went from 305lbs down to 225lbs (which is my pre-weight gain weight) .. I'm still losing, but my major problem areas are the love handles mostly, and the stomach fat below my belly button. I know the normal exercises to get rid of those areas, however I have a hernia from a previous surgery above and to the left of my belly button... a little bigger in circumference than a quarter, right along my zipper scar from my previous surgery... My surgeon didn't want to repair it at time of surgery, and now with my relocating, I don't have insurance yet to get it repaired... what could I do exercise wise to help me get rid of those stubborn areas? Any ideas? It's really all I have left to do as far as my journey goes, and it's probably going to be the hardest! Thanks!

    Do you regret it?

I think you need to watch your own video carefully. You will here yourself talk about food, eating, cooking for you. I believe you have a Food Addiction. Not to fear.... I have one too. The band makes it possible to cut your appetite, so you won't want to eat all kinds of stuff. Depression,, that comes from being overweight. So yep you were right about the weight. It throws your Hormones out of whack, so everyone in one way or another gets Depressed. When you lose weight, you lose the Depression. Alter your Digestive system, or shut it down ? You have the wrong surgery mixed up with the band. That does not happen with the band. You will eat at least 3 x a day, probably some Snacks, but it will be Healthy Food, not the stuff that you love to eat that got you where your at. Somethings will be altered, and some things are in portion control. Either way you will be satisfied. But that comes in time ! First you have to have enough adjustments, then the band kicks in and takes the edge off of eating. Until then,,, you will learn control on your own, like we all did... Does it work ? I would say YES! I was 356, and last time weighed I was 241. I'll see next week when I get weighed again. But yep it keeps coming off as long as I watch what I eat, count calories and Protein, 800-1200 calories daily, and work out 3 x a week. So I don't kill myself, or burn out. Weight Gain yep I gained it almost all back, this is my second time around.. Surgeon deflated me by thinking he blew the band. Well he was wrong. He overfilled me, and that was all. But he deflated me, and it took time to get another surgeon to look at it, and see that there was nothing wrong, then he filled the Band. This was a surgeons mistake that was fixed with a fill. THIS IS NOT A COMMON THING. The weight Loss on the Ticker is from January only. Actual weight loss is 115Lbs. So yep I know it's possible. This is not sugar coated either ! Shirley.
  17. I have been "lurking" here for about 2 months. The posts I have read have helped me prepare myself for this wonderful journey. I have tested all of the clear Protein options I can find, and have my stock ready for post surgery. I have tested all of the other Protein drinks I can find and have a good idea for those as well. I have a wonderful husband who has put up gallons of chicken stock so that is taken care of. I have been on the high protein diet for 3 weeks and have dropped 20 pounds. I feel ready. I feel serene. I feel blessed. I am 43 years old. I have been heavy since I had my child when I was 18. Prior to that I was a nice teenage weight of 120. While I was pregnant I gained 60 pounds. After that it was a myriad of things that contributed to the additional weight gain. I reconciled my self to being heavy sometime ago. I tried dieting, weight loss pills and doctor directed programs. I decided to take this step because I want to be healthy, My weight is damaging my joints, my feet and it's time. I want to thank you all for being do honest and genuine here, it has helped me very much to be able to share your journeys. My surgery is the 21st in TJ. I can't wait! Rinda

    March Bandsters: MASTER THREAD

My band has slipped. I went for an esphogram yesterday and it shows that the majority of my stomach has slipped up through the band. I have to go for another surgery. I need to meet with my surgeon on Nov 10th. I am unsure as to what my options are insurence wise. I am thinking about switching to the VSG, but I'm not sure. Doing my research about it. I think my surgeon is going to direct me to just getting a new band, or just moving the one that is in there already. Not sure what to do. For now I have an open band and hope for very little weight gain during this time. Sorry I have not been on the boards often at all. Good to see some familiar names around. Congrats to all that made it to goal and keep up the good work to all who keep using their band...the tool we chose. Christine

    My Lap Band Slipped

I'm glad to hear that all is well now. I had a GI swallow this morning due to pain, weight gain and reflux. Doc said that I was entirely too tight but my surgeon will talk to me about it on my next visit. I'm afraid he will tell me that it's also a slippage. It's nice to hear that someone else has gone through this also and with a good outcome. Nevertheless; I still don't know what my outcome is. I guess I'll know next week. And you are right, I really dont want to lose my band and gain the weight back. Pray that all goes well.

    Carb Debate (Friendly)

I am extremely carb-sensitive. I have had PCOS for 25 years, and full-blown type 2 diabetes for 10 years. In MY world, there is no difference between a "good" carb and a "bad" carb. All carbs cause me to gain weight and spike my blood sugar. I eat an extremely low-carb diet, with my PCP's blessing. My endocrinologist loves my diabetes numbers when I am eating "vlc" (very low carb). I have successfully lost HUNDREDS of pounds over my lifetime by eliminating carbs. Weakness has caused me to allow carbs back into my life every single time and that leads to weight gain. There were other issues at play prior to my getting sleeved, including the shape of my pre-surgery stomach . . . my surgeon said that he was pretty surprised when he got in there and saw what it looked like . . . that made it so easy for me to gain weight . . . and the sleeve has done exactly what I wanted it to do. I am down 43.5 pounds in 7 weeks. But no matter what my sleeve makes possible, I will ALWAYS have to be aware of my carb intake. That is something I accepted a long time ago. However, I know that there are plenty of people who can eat carbs and lose weight quite well. I used to be jealous of people who could eat carbs and still lose weight, but I got over it! Every one of us is different, with different tolerances for different things. No one can say, "you HAVE to eat carbs to live," anymore than anyone can say, "you can't lose weight while you are still eating carbs." I KNOW my body . . . and I KNOW that I can't eat carbs. That being said . . . I still LIKE carbs! And I love apples. This time of year has always been hard for me because it's freaking apple season! I allow myself an occasional piece of apple. It's definitely easier to only eat a "little piece of apple" with my sleeve!
  21. Thank you Lulugirl. I am having the same issue, was self pay in Mexico because of a low bmi, and now on the same boat. I was told I need to gain about 15 lbs. I cannot afford to do self pay at this time or I would go do it. Maybe my friend the accountant can loan me the money, lol....It is very frustrating, he is correct, I need to eat right and excercise, so why can't I do it??? Seems like the harder I try, the more I set myself up for failure. I think I'm depressed because of the weight gain. I refuse to give up, someday I will Killl the fat monster. I wish you luck and advice you to do something about the weight gain now, it is 30 lbs, do not wait until it is 60 like me. Stay in touch
  22. Okay where do I begin?! I'm literally 13 days away from my one year surgiversary and am not excited in the least bit. I am no where near my goal and have slowly gained almost 15 lbs in the last 2 1/2 months. My daughter's father passed away July 28th of this year and it totally just took me by surprise. He was a big guy (but not "that" big) but long story short he went to ER on a Monday . . . learned he had diabetes and was near a stroke and went into cardiac arrest on a Thursday and passed. He was only 28. And even though we've been broken up for YEARS I still took it hard. My daughter cried and is sad but she is doing great. She's 6 1/2 and understands but is doing well. I've stayed away from this site because I'm so embarrassed and ashamed that I let my emotions get the best of me and literally threw in the towel to any and ALL weight loss efforts. For me this post sleeve journey hasn't been effortless. I've gone to the gym the day my dr cleared me to go and have had to burn every pound I've burned. So when I stopped exercising and counting carbs/calories I started gaining little by little. I don't want to make this too long and don't want to be "debbie downer" but I guess I'm just venting in a place where (hopefully) someone has experienced what I have. A little bit of success and then some weight gain and a success again (hopefully). The lowest weight I have gotten to was 206 (from 285 day of surgery and 306 at the start of Kaiser's Options Program). I stay away from the scale but last time I weighed myself I was 220/221!!! . . . but it fluctuates from 217/220 ish. I was SO close to onderland I could taste it! lol . . . and now it seems oh so far away. I just don't know where to start. Oh I guess I should add I got engadged about a month ago to my boyfriend of a yr and a 1/2. So you would think planning a wedding would make me more motivated to get my butt moving. It's done the opposite! lol . . . yikes! I need help! Thanks for reading

    Carb Debate (Friendly)

There are plenty of Protein drinks without carbs or with very few- look around for them! In fact, a Protein Drink with 30 grams of carbs should NEVER be on our plans- that is a lot of sugar. I've never seen one with that many unless it is for weight gain, like Ensure. Ditto vitamins- tha bariatric vitamins generally do not have a lot of carbs- mine have <1. My Calcium chews do have 4 each but I know you can find calcium without carbs too. It is REALLY helpful to log your food every day- I use fatsecret.com and there are lots of other good ones. I have mine set to show fat, carbs, net carbs, protein, and calories. I log every single thing including vitamins, etc. It helps you feel like you are in control and accountable. Also remember that post-op your capacity will be sooooo little- that lowers your ability to get carbs in.

    OT- Are your children obese?

2 of my 3 children are prone to putting on weight but seem to maintain most of the time. They are now 20 and 18. My 15 year old is a skinny thing. Any way every so often one of them will complain about weight gain and talk about dieting - my reply is always - no diets , just cut out some of the junk and get out and exercise. I think this has worked quite well. I believe my weight gain got out of control from my mother putting me on every fad diet that came along and restricting all my food intake - this led to sneaking food and as i got older, instead of that one piece of cake with everyone else i would sneak off and buy a whole cake and then have to eat it all so i wouldn't be found out. With 2 kids prone to weight gain and one who is skinny i really believe genetics play a big role, cause i don't feed them any differently.

    Sept. 2010 Bandsters !!!

I was a year Sept 7th and have only lost 50lbs. I say only 50, but 50 is better than none. I am disappointed in my loss, especially when a close friend of mine had it done end of June this year and already has lost 47lbs. She did start with a full band though. Congrats to all of you who lost 100+ pounds so far!! What an accomplishment! I think any weight loss is better than a weight gain. I already have 11cc in a 14cc band. I am thinking I should have went with the bypass. I was against it when I went to the Dr to begin my weight loss journey, but now have regrets about my decision. I want to see what my options are for a revision surgery, but not sure if insurance will cover it now that my BMI is lower than requirement level. If I can't get a revision then I will have to be happy with what I have. My Dr said your first year is the best year..hopefully I can prove him wrong!
