  3. I remember my first Christmas as a post op. It was 5 months out and nothing sweet perturbed me, in any way. It was so easy. I could sit around people, parties and xmas time food, yet utterly lack the desire to eat any food that was off " the plan." So easy I tell you. Fast forward to this Xmas and it is a much different story. We host parties. That is who my wife is. It is so easy to grab a small piece of home made almond Roca, a home made this or a home made that. My desire for sugar and salt comes alive. Granted I only have eaten about 100 calories extra this weekend of Xmas part food (big party last night too), but I am quite surprised at what difference a year makes. I reached goal at 7 months, about 10 months ago. I have been able to eat my paleo friendly diet without too much effort since then, but, man, this Christmas has been so much harder as a vet. I am sure come Monday things will be fine again, once back on the eating plan and back to the cross fit workouts (today is my rest day). I am going to need to be careful when tempted around holidays. It is not about weight gain (working out keeps me fit), but more about being disciplined, about being in control of my motivations and my goals. Things I should have responsibility over. How has your Christmas time been? Do you get these holiday lapses? What are your strategies when you are around parties (either hosting or attending) and your vet mind starts tricking you ?

    Empty Lap band

Hi everyone, thought I would let you know that I seen my Dr. this morning and when he seen my current UGI X-Rays he almost lost it. My esophagus is mega sized, real bad I was told by his coordinator that this constitute to mechanical failure of the band and there for a letter to my health paln is in the making when I don't know but I am trying to have revision surgery. All the fill has been removed and I ahve been places on a 6 week diet, the first two weeks only liquids and the remaining 4 weeks puraded foods anything that I can liquify in mushy sstages and sip through a straw the nurse said and he gave me a months supply of a diet aid to help on bad days. This is my third dilated esophagus since 2008 and well the band has helped me a great deal but it is not going against me. I will do my best to not gain weight and I was told as odd as it seems some of his patients that had their fill removed as me lost weight no weight gain so I think like me that had their band done several years post op might be able to handle eating smaller portions and carry on as if the fill was never removed, but sometimes it is hard to tame a hungry stomach.

    Mother!

Yes she is. And over then last two years she has put on a lot more weight. For the first time since I can remember I am smaller than she is. Well I wonder if it is more of a matter of her not being happy with herself and the weight gain and as she sees you shrink it reminds her of that. That's not to say you Mom doesn't love you or support you. She is having the problem, not you.
  6. Started running and I have gained 3 pounds. I am trying to not get discouraged but after 3 weeks I am back down the 3 pounds but now stuck. Has anyone else had a plateau and how do you break it?? I journalize what I eat and usually stay in the 800 to 1000 calories a day. I also run about 8 to 10 miles a week. Help? Does anyone have any ideas? I'm nervous that I won't get the last part of my weight off. Surgery was May 28 btw. Help!!!
  7. I particularly related to the post on the level of parents wanting us to be "better". Felt to me like " not good enough". I know they tried the best they knew... But telling a 13 yr old to diet and getting diet pills set up years of adult up and down weight gain and loss. I look at old family pics and damn. I was good enough... Just didn't get the message from anyone. Sigh
  8. Okay folks day four.....of cottage cheese and yogurt:guess , How the heck have you guys done this????? I fall to my knees and say You are better than me and I adore you!!!! Alcohol?

I had my 1st drink 3wks out-2 small peach ballini at a drive thru daiquiri shop. It took 2 hours to drink each one but I felt fine. Was able to drive home w/no headaches, and no hangovers. I also have tried long island teas but feel fine after 1. I do request they not making as strong..also the scale shoes no weight gain
  10. ccjll, thank you for your post. I am schedule for surgery on Dec. 17th & you have just out so much in perspective for me. You reminded why I started this process and the reasons I need to follow through with it. I have nothing to lose except the weight that has been holding me back from living the life I deserve, the life I want to live! It's not easy being overweight & it's something I've struggled with literally since I was born. I tried of being sick & tried. I lose weight, gain weight! It's just a cycle of disappoint!!! I'm sorry for my rant. Congratulations to everyone who has already made tours changing choice and began the banded journey. I also want to congratulate all of us who have taken the steps to begin our own banded journey...
  11. Hey ladies! How long did you wait to get pregnant after vsg? My surgeon suggests waiting 18 months before trying to get pregnant. I have read about women who got pregnant unplanned, much sooner than that. I worry a bit about pregnancy weight gain, but mostly I want to be healthy and have a healthy baby. My husband and I do not have any children yet and have been getting a bit of baby fever lately. Of course it started after I was already in the process of trying to have surgery. We agreed I would do the surgery first, then think about having a baby. I feel like one year out would be ok to start trying. It may take awhile anyway. I am newly sleeved, so I have awhile to go yet, but it is something that is on my mind. And thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

    Clumsy

I spoke with both my doctor and my massage therapist about this. Our centre of gravity is changing. My question to my doc was well why didn't I feel like this when I gained the weight? Her answer? Because the weight gain was gradual. It took me a year to gain 40lbs and 2 months to lose it!

    Let her eat cake

You did say sugar free cake. That is interesting. The sugar in most wedding cakes does make people sick because the stomach and intestines are not used to all that sugar, potentially leading to the dumping syndrome. It would make me sick. the last time i have eaten sugar outside the sugar found in protein shakes and bars (usually 1-3 g) has been april 2012. I do not miss it. If you like sugar free cake and it does not cause you any issues (dumping, weight gain, etc), I say eat it. Be reasonable though. Try and stick to a single small piece.

    waiting time between fills

Mr Dr. is pretty aggressive. I was banded 7 months ago. Have been in to see him every 4 weeks since the surgery, and have had 6 fills based upon my appetite and weight gain/loss. Yes I did gain!!! Saw him just 3 days ago, and we both agreed I am at a good place. No fills this visit, will not be back to see him for 3 months now unless I feel I need to. I have a good feel of restriction. I am forced to eating only small amounts at any one sitting. If I wanted to, and I have once or twice, can go a full day without even wanting to eat. We went kyacking one day, and other than my Breakfast shake, I did not care to eat after that. (although I did have a few beers on the river!) I am aware of my band being there with every swallow, no matter what it is. It's not uncomfortable, or overly restricted, but I am aware it is there and after a small portion of food, I can not eat any more. Solid foods take a certain amount of time to pass through the band and eating anymore will only cause great discomfort. But be advised, it took me 5-6 months to get to this "Sweet Spot". I have found that most posts here with people freaking out about not loosing weight are those who have been banded very recently. You didn't get fat in one month.

    Now nervously waiting.....

I am with you Donali, my mom loves to buy clothes and fairly often they are too small for me (yes even my adorable mom under-estimates me). I have two whole drawers full of new clothes still with tags on in varying sizes. Just in the last few weeks I am fitting back into my last year summer clothes (recall I had a 40 lb weight gain last year that scared me into getting the band). I can't wait to where smaller and smaller things. T

day 4 post op feeling UGH!!

I had a hard time getting down all the recommended fluids and Protein for the first week. The PA for my surgeon said it was ok and that I should just take small sips and drink as much as I could handle. I had little appetite the first week but gradually increased my Liquid Protein. I had some dizziness and added something with a few carbs, like light apple juice. They pumped you with gas and IV fluids for the procedure so don;t worry about the weight gain. Hang in there, it'll get better in a few days.

    Lap Band removal

If you are not having complications why remove the band? Does not make any sense to me. If I want to eat "clean" and eat lots of fibrous type veggies etc, I will just get a small unfill. I guess if you have a tight band with no saline or slippage, or reflux issues, it would make sense to remove the band, but if you have a "healthy band" removing all or most of the saline will be the same thing as NO BAND AT ALL. For Me, removing saline in my band is like having no band at all, so if I ever wanted to eat "freely" I will just get saline removed. I am honest and not cocky, and I KNOW ME, it will be hell to try to maintain my weight without the help of my band, I can actually lose weight on my own, but I've NEVER been able to maintain my weight. If I run into a issue where I can't exercise from injury, or have a stress event in my life, I know I would put back every pound without the help of my band. I am almost 8 years post op and it does NOT GET HARD to maintain weight loss until after the 6 year mark, also I found that the lap band screws up the metabolism, and sometimes WE HAVE NO IDEA of how little our portions are until we get a total unflll or have no band at all. Most surgeons say 95 percent of lap banders will gain all their weight back if they remove the band, I AGREE, I got cocky too after 7 years and thought I could go it "alone" with hardly no saline in my band last year when I had a hernia and I gained back 50 pounds in about 2 months, it was rapid weight gain, and I ate like a "normal person". Also I like the "safety net" with the band, I can always reboot it and as they say..."filler up" as long as I have a band that can be adjusted, I can sleep at night..LOL. This is one reason I would not revise to any other weight loss surgery, the band can always be adjusted as long as there are no complications. Good luck with your endeavors!
  18. The TMI part of your post made me think about Celiac (gluten intolerance). I was diagnosed 6 yrs. ago, and I NEVER EVER thought I would have it--I am a carb. addict, after all. Maybe the next time you are getting blood work done, you could ask them to check that for you too. It can cause weight gain/retention, for those of us "lucky" enough to have weight issues.
  19. Hi, I am about 7 weeks out from surgery. I was getting Unjury powder and get emails from them. Several suggest that WLS patients have slowing of weight loss or even weight gain when they transition to food and stop protein supplements because they are taking in more calories. I see in myself that my weight loss has slowed since I am on food and eating less protein supplements. Looking over my Fitnesspal, I am eating more calories but the protein is the same. DUH. Now I do get that Unjury or any other company has the selling of their product as their main goal but the reasoning makes sense. They site dieticians and say that your surgeon knows surgery but unless you have kidney problems, you should use protein shakes so many times a day to lose weight until you reach your goal. So I am thinking of keeping a protein shake for lunch. I like Premier Protein and that gives me 30 grams of protein. Before, I was still using that but sipping some as a snack mid morning and finishing it in the evening to get my protein in. But if I switch to more shakes, I would have less calories for the protein. Yes, I still will eat solid food but I want to get to goal. My doctor said she wants me eating food but I will eat food but have more shakes. Has anyone else tried this approach?

    August Bandsters Updates....

Missy, I hear you, girlfriend....I feel that same exact way.....like a new person (or should I say like my old self prior to much weight gain!!). I am planning things I would have never had the energy for prior to the surgery....trips, doing more with my daughter, just going to the store without feeling like a played a game of football, etc. I called my sister today and she said that even my voice has changed...happier, perky!!! And as you mentioned, we are just starting the journey...imagine the rest the trip!!!!!!!! And I also believe someone must have "banded" my brain as I am making MUCH better choices and eating only to survivor NOT to comfort myself. Missy, keep up the great work and keep enjoying your new life!!

    The Easy Way Out

Thanks Rootman, I'm also doing self-pay and there is no aspect of this decision that was easy. Easy was gaining the weight and easy would be letting the repercussions of the weight gain continue to deprive me of living. I've tried so many ways to lose weight, different diets, different exercises, and it just didn't work for me. And it isn't working for Americans in general. I refuse to listen to another person who hasn't battled what I'm battling.
  22. Weight 222.5 (sad but still down 7.5 pounds) was told the weight gain/lack of weigh loss is normal Turns out I had 1 cc in my band and they added 3 ½ so I have a total of 4 ½ and my band hold 10 cc The actual access the port was much more painful then acceding the medi port I had in my check for chemo. So numbing meds as I am a tough new Yorker cancer survivor (just in general I think when they hear you have had cancer that you are very strong and don’t need any minor stuff like numbing cream ect) After had to drink a cup of Water to be sure I didn’t throw up Went down fine and stayed down. I was hungry before the fill but after not at all My stomach was growling later in the evening but I was not hungry at all Had ½ an ensure (by the time I had dinner it was after 9pm and I didn’t want to have too much food in my stomach) but I was good didn’t wake up in the middle of the night starving like I have been On liquids for 2 days then mushies for 2 then normal food Feeling real psyched for this let the weight loss begin

    Meds making me gain!

Please do not worry. Weight gain is not abnormal and you will also have weight stalls. Keep taking your medicine.
  24. I'm building my way up to good restriction again after being totally unfilled for a surgery. this is what its been like for me. Every time I think "this is the one" and for three or four days it's great - I can eat good variety and reasonable quantity (as I dont need to actually lose weight now) but then it disappears and I have appetite, trouble getting from meal to meal without snacking, can eat what I consider HUGE meals (not really compared to others, there IS restriction there, but I can eat a whole sandwich for instance) and the satiation after a meal simply doesnt last. I'm really having trouble preventing weight gain, feel like I'm constantly on a diet and have to run 10kms almost every day to keep the balance on the favourable side. I've got enough control of my eating after six years that I'm not going to pile weight on, its taken me 9 months to gain 6lb, but a gain is a gain and I want to nip it in the bud. It wasnt quite like this after surgery - every fill took me to a good place, they did loosen after a few days but becuase I was much heavier and it took much less work to lose weight, I wasnt as aware of it or bothered by it. By the time I got to maintenance, keeping a steady weight was effortless - I didnt think about it, I had my daily routine around eating and exercise, and I enjoyed myself when I went out or away and broke that routine, then got right back to it. I never gained weight from these occasional indulgences. That's becuase I had the perfect restriction for me. Getting back to it is sure frustrating. But every fill lasts that little bit longer, and eventually you get there.
  25. i had by pass 6 days ago ,still have swelling and pain on left wound site and weigh more than I did pre op help!!
