    Banded

It's finally done. As of 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008, I joined the many who have been banded. They woke me at around 3:00 p.m. when they took me to a room. I was made to stay overnight since I have sleep apnea, but I had my CPAP with me at the hospital and all went well. I was up and going to the bathroom by about 4:00, and by 10:00 on Friday I was on my way home. I'm sore today, but I think it's more from the gas from the surgery than anything, and if I could finally get rid of all of that I'd be great. I've been up and down all day, and every time I go to the bathroom I make myself take a lap all the way around the interior of the house before I sit down again. I'm on liquid Loritab for the pain, but I'm only taking it about every 6 hours, and at the lowest possible dose. I hate taking anything that knocks me out, and this stuff definitely does the trick. I've taken in plenty of liquids, mostly cold stuff, and some jell-o. I also had a sugar free fudgesicle this afternoon. That's not exactly on my list, but my throat was super sore and that's the only thing that even sounded good. I ate about half of it, so as not to push things, and didn't have any problems, so that's a good thing. I tried drinking a little chicken broth, but that seemed to upset my tummy a bit, so I don't think I'm going to try that again just yet. I'm not doing anything that's going to make me throw up. Heck, burping hurts bad enough. I can't even imagine vomiting! I'm so relieved this is finally over. I'm on my way. Pre-op weight was 267.2. My first mini goal - 250. I'm going to stick with mini goals. The big picture will come along soon enough.

    Time Off Work

So far from what I've heard it depends on the person, of you don't mind me asking how old are you? What's your weight? And where are you from?

    Exercise habits?

@@GACaldwell your doing fantastic~! I have to admit I was a total couch potato before surgery. I got my exercise in only because it was a requirement of surgery. I started slow and built up. At three months I had a big stall. It was my wake up call that I had to put more to my workouts. I sold my treadmill and a gym membership. I'm an emotional stress eater. I changed that behavior into becoming a true gym rat. My best stress relief without guilt My workout has become an addiction: I never dreamed this was ever possible. At two years out I still do cardio and hour and weight lifting and hour. 4 times a week. I trained and ran a half marathon in may. I teach physical fitness with senior citizens four days a week on top of my own work out. (hand weights, silver sneakers, cardio and resistance band) I completed a female weight lifting class. I'm learning so much. I am making gains. At my age I'll never be a body builder or bikini model but I do ok for an old fart.
  4. i know, isn't it great. i overindulged at xmas, but nothing like i would pre-band. i eat, just alot smaller portions now, about 1/3 of what i used to. i can tell when i need a fill, that i start eating more, and can eat things i shouldn't. i was tight after xmas, too many sweets and wine, but on liquids, creamy soups for the past 2 days, hope to be feeling better soon. congrats on your weight loss!

    Protein Shakes

It all depends...I am not big on adding fruits in my shakes cause for me the Protein shakes are sweet enough. Also what you want to be careful of is the sugar in the fruit. You dont want to add a lot of sugar cause its carbs and that can slow down the weight loss. So my best advice would be to try to stay away from fruit at least early on. I do eat blueberries and cherries time to time. I barely eat apples or oranges (they are hard to digest and I am 4 months out), I do eat bananas once in a while and at times I might add them to my shake to add more flavor. Pineapple, grapes, mango and even bananas are high in sugar. Here are some interesting articles that tell you more about fruits... http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/sugar-wise-how-fruit-stacks http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/31/making-the-case-for-eating-fruit/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/whatfruit.htm

    Is There Starvation Mode?

Actually, what is referred as starvation mode is actually a slow down in metabolism... And if you have a metabolic disorder this can be HORRIBLE!!! Before I was sleeved, my doc and nutritionist were helping me developed a plan to eat on a regular basis and to coordinate my foods properly so that I could lose weight pre-op... My metabolism is screwed up!!!
  7. Hi Jessica! Great job with your weight loss! I think carbs might have a little to do with my stall. I also think that my working out has something to do with it, oddly enough. We have a new gym in town that does some pretty intense workouts and I go Mon, Weds, and Fri. I can't help but wonder if this sudden change in workout might be causing a little bit of the stall, as well as maybe building muscle. I am going to try the Keto diet to limit my carbs and hope that that, combined with my inability to eat a lot and working out break my stall! Good luck to you on breaking yours!

    A Guy Question?

You've been a type II (diagnosed) for about 5 years? I wouldn't worry too much right now about a lot of permanent damage having been done. I would, however, get thee to a Urologist as the poster above me suggested and see what he/she has to say. It is also possible that Cialis or Levitra would be a better fit for you. My best friend is a Urologist and when the "blue diamond" didn't seem to help my DH he suggested trying the other two. Our PCP gave samples of each and they did seem to work better. But everyone is different. Also, are you on any antidepressants or beta blockers for blood pressure? Those can also cause issues. And yes, I think you will notice some improvement when the weight begins to come off.

Weight Loss slowed a bit; Still Enjoying Banded Life

My first checkup was great...this week I checked my weight, and I'm only down a pound (25 total for the entire journey). I wanted more, but then, that's my personality. I want it gone yesterday ...now that I can see the end of the 'obese life' I want it to be done and over with so I can get on with the new, healthy life I've planned for myself. Realistically, it will probably take the better part of a year. I'm shooting for a healthy 10 pound loss per month - I feel it's doable if I watch my calorie count and work out like I know I should. Winter is tough - my walks outside are getting a little harder due to weather. The only do-or-die walk I take is with my dog every morning. He can't take a day off - that's when he does his 'business'...and he's a great reason for me to get off my lazy duff and get out the door, no matter what. I do like the gym - that's one of my saving graces...even when I was younger, and eating WAAAY too much, I had the gym and physical activity to help keep me under some semblance of control. When I stopped being that active was when the weight really came on. That, and having children. I was heavy when I got pregnant with my son Ron, but only gained 15 pounds under doctor's advice. My son weighed over 9 1/2 lbs, so I did really well. Of course sitting around at home and gaining 50 lbs after he was born did NOT help... Now I'm dealing with the head hunger, but it's getting a little better every day. I've transitioned out of mushies and am getting slowly acclimatized to "regular" food again. I still don't do well with sandwiches, and I think I'm still drinking too much during the meal - though it's way down from what I used to do. It's a process, and I've got to be patient with myself. I have currently lost more weight since beginning this process than at any time in the previous 5 years...I've got to remember that, and not be too hard on myself. I decided on this process BECAUSE it did not promise "instant" results and BECAUSE I had more control over the process. Now I just have to relax a bit and let the process continue to work for me...
  10. Hi everyone. Well, I had my first appointment with the surgeon on April 18 and all went well and quickly, which surprised me. The surgeon knows, and we discussed briefly, that I was diagnosed with NASH last year. He was non-plussed and said that would improve with weight loss, mentioned nothing about it posing a problem during or after surgery. However, a co-worker of my husband had the banding done, is having to have it re-done (whatever that means), and he told my husband yesterday that his surgeon told him that if he found a fatty liver that he would terminate the surgery. So then I went online to read about NAFLD and NASH (which is what I have) and gastric sleeve surgery. Confusing confusing confusing information..... A couple of research papers said it helps and doesn't pose too many complications unless the person has cirrhosis and/or portal hypertension. As of my biopsy last year I have neither of those. But other articles, etc say that the liver will "Shred" or "Tear" and bruise due to it's larger size due to the fat. There wasn't any mention by my liver specialist, nor was it in the copies of the biopsy results, that stated my liver was enlarged. BUT... which of the information is true??? Will my liver shred or tear if it's fatty and they try to do this surgery, or.....???? Anyone else have fatty liver, and if so... what was your experience?
  11. Hello everyone, I'm a newbie and saw I needed to introduce myself here. I've been here a few times before when I first had my surgery and finally decided to join. I'd like to say thank you to the owners of this site and the members, because you helped me tremendously in the beginning when I first had my surgery even though I wasn't a member with all of the posts for post and pre-op surgery questions. I now refer this sight to anyone who is considering or have been approved for the surgery. I had my surgery 12/08 and have been doing pretty well since, lost approx 60 pounds so far. Look forward to all the information/support I'm sure I will continue to gain from here.
  12. My experience is that sometimes something we wear regularly may stretch a bit as our weight fluctuates. Perhaps that is the case. The 18 may not have stretched.

do you need to buy new shoes ?

it just seems funny, I guess that losing a shoe size never crossed my mind, when I thought about losing weight, or being "skinny/thinner"...

    Anyone out there with PCOS?

Hi Jami! I have PCOS too! I was banded 9-20-07 and have lost 76 lbs so far. My weight loss has been pretty consistent but has slowed considerably. For a good bit of my banded journey I have tried to stick to a low carb lifestyle. I just recently switched to a low calorie lifestyle. I just joined the YMCA today and I start with my orientation tomorrow. I hope that exercising on a daily basis will help me get to where I want to be. I still have a long way to go, but I am very pleased with my results so far. Good luck to you.
  15. Thanks for the advice, guys. I guess I will keep working the program and worry about the weight loss after my first fill. The initial weight loss is a nice benefit though :smile2: I'm quite enjoying clothes falling off. They were already getting lose from my pre-surgery diet. I lost over 20 pounds on that one.
  16. Yikes! So to all, confession....I was planning to have VGS surgery and then, canceled, postponed and rescheduled to have Sleeve Plication surgery..... I know the controversy associated with a "new" procedure, but everything was new at some point. I am excited, have spoken to Dr's and they've assured me the results are almost the same if not the same in terms of restriction and weight loss as with the sleeve, there's the hormone issue, but I can deal with that...... So here I go......I'm in the hospital, by myself, IV is in, tights are on, in a few hours I'll be "sleeved" Send good thoughts!

    Tummy bump help?!

You can't target weight loss. You could do 1000 crunches a day and all you'll end up with is a nice six pack UNDER a layer of fat. The weight's going to come off where it wants to come off. The body is very stubborn that way. Toning through strength training only visibly helps when you have a very low body fat percentage. Trust me. I know a LOT about this. I have ridiculous amounts of weight on my hips and thighs. I run or bike 4-6 days a week and do lower body strength training 3 times a week. All my fat is still coming off places like my face, ribs, arms, back.....

    Today my Journey begins

Good for you!!! I myself have struggled with my weight since an early age and I too tried all the "diets" and so forth. I was banded last September and have lost 30 lbs....although I wish it were coming off a little faster...I'm thrilled that for the first time in my life, I'm losing instead of gaining! Good luck to you in your journey and God Bless you.
  20. I just went in for my third fill. I was at 1.8 still with restriction, but wanted to be tighter so I could lose more weight. My old fill was removed and a new one of 2.3 was put in. However, the next day I had practically no restriction. Why is that? I can eat much than I could before the new fill. Can anyone explain this to me? I'd appreciate it. 3rd Fill 2.3 Now at 232 lbs.
  21. I hear you sister -- I definitely am looking forward to feeling better about myself, increased confidence, and a return of my personality -- also meeting men ... you are not alone and it isn't silly -- that is one of the definite benefits of losing the weight -- to feel good and sexy again! I also understand about not telling everyone - I think that is wise -- just your very closest friends/family for support - no one else needs to know until you are ready to tell them. Some tend to judge and we don't need that - we just need encouragement as this is a definite life changing event and will be ongoing for the rest of our lives. Take care and good luck -- the surgery is really minor and you will do fine. I just got banded on December 3 and feel good -- looking forward to the first fill to feel the restriction, but have already lost about 9 pounds and feeling so much better already.
  22. As long as you're following the rules, you're doing fine! I'm not even a year out yet and have lost a significant amount of weight...especially considering they told me to expect only about a 40lb loss the first year. Enjoy it while it's falling off, the weightloss will slow down, I promise!

A bikini, is it a reality....

I have always worn a tankini. Skirt and long torso tank. This summer was my first summer in 15+ years at a normal weight so my skirt was a tad shorter and my top was the bra top variety. My thighs are really saggy and I want to go to the pool or beach and NOT feel self conscious so I will never wear a bikini bottom again, most likely.. Wear what makes YOU feel good. I felt great in my itty bitty bikini when I was in high school and college. I haven't felt great in a suit since until this summer. (This is a hurdle for me, too, as I was a competitive swimmer and still love to swim for exercise.) Shop around, you'll find the right style.

Lapband revised to bypass but scared!

I've had many surgeries...c-section, nephrectomy, gallbladder removal, lapband. When my band slipped I lost all hope and gained all my weight back. I had RNY less than two months ago and I'm already down 50 lbs!!! The doctor took out the lapband at the same time. I only stayed in the hospital 2 days and have had no complications. I was scared to death, but this has been the best weight loss decision i've ever made. In my opinion RNY is the way to go.
  25. 2KpUpwithAvery

    The time has come

Excellent start to your goal! Always happy to see a positive start... As for "how do you know" you need a fill, I went with the "if I'm losing comfortably" i won't get another fill program. I was only filled TWO times and I have the largest band they can possibly install, why you ask??? Because I'm losing weight at a good rate while ALSO maintaining my ability to eat stuff without being tightened to the point I PB... You do whats best for you, in the end you'll adjust your fills by the rate your losing. Your dr. will push you in a healthy direction! Good Luck!
