Any vegetarians also get sleeved?
2ndSpring replied to fatveggie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been a pescetarian for about 25 years or so. I'm about 12 weeks post-op. The focus on Protein is a huge change for me. For my whole adult life, I made whole grains the base of every meal, surrounded by veggies and just a little protein. I had to admit to myself after all these years that it wasn't working for me - constant cravings and low satiety. I still don't believe in the high levels of protein that most adhere to (except during the post surgery healing phase) Which is good, because veg protein sources don't get you anywhere near 60g a day and I don't want to rely on shakes and bars now that I'm past the healing phase. I'm a total convert to the low carb camp for the duration of my weight loss phase. It really does reduce hunger and cravings. I haven't decided on a maintenance plan yet - I'll figure that out down the road. I've been eating 3 meals a day comprised of 3 oz of protein (fish, hard cheese, eggs, nuts, beans) and 1 oz of veggies plus fats (olive, coconut, butter, avocado), Sometimes, I'll add a Protein Bar, but not everyday. The weight is coming off at a nice steady pace. I don't know if I am on the right track or not - all seems well for now and I'm open to experimenting down the road. -
As I Celebrate loosing weight I'm starting to wonder how much ps might cost me if my insurance doesn't pay for it... Has anyone out there paid for their own ps? What did you have done and how much did it cost? Also, what was the recovery like? Harvest

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. After surgery, the Weight Loss phase is very short. I transitioned into the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. So you need to adhere to the program requirements that you were given in order to maximize your weight loss.

Ketosis is so good. It means your burning and going to lose weight. I find sometimes when I am in ketosis my clothes begin to smell more metallic if I am working out at the gym. It is weird I know but after a few diets that monitored my ketons I got used to it. Once you start to maintain more it wont be a factor.

I had an episode (caused by grits!!) and I had to get unfilled. OMG! I miss my fill! I can eat anything. I realize how much my brain can "make me" eat. September 12th is my re-fill date, because my docs vacation and my schedule. I MUST try to do this on my own for a few weeks. Please, God, let me not gain 20lbs 'till I get filled. . . . .trust me, you don't know how much you miss something 'till it's not there. The band is awesome and I will count the days until I get filled.

Yay....getting sleeved June 27th!!
CAMMYD replied to mweldon's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When I saw my surgeon on the 17th he suggested I follow the liquid diet that the Dietician had given me to lose at least 5 lbs this week. The reason for his suggestion , he said it would shrink the liver which is in the area of where they will need to perform the procedure. If anything it gives you the headstart on weening yourself from cafienne and sugars so that you are not just cold turkey. Thats my thought process , plus I have lost weight these couple of weeks that I have done the diet. Use your best judgement , but I think its better to be completely ready for the change in consumption . -
I can't believe that I'm 13 weeks and I can actually shop in the regular size stores and do not have to find the plus size! I feel really good about my weight loss right now and am looking forward to the next couple months cause I will be going to Puerto Rico on July 4th and that's when I will post my first pic!

look up 3 week stall it is very common... I myself stalled for 7 weeks at 6 months out. Just keep following your doctors recommendations and contact your nutritionist. Your body may have gone into starvation mode stopping the weight loss. You may have to try getting in some liquid calories to let your body know everything will be alright. Good Luck!

how big is your band?
tiggerfan0464 replied to MarylandMommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Usually the doctor decides when he goes in and finds out the size of your stomach. My doctor thought because of my weight he would use a 14 cc band, however once he got in the 10 cc band was a better fit. Kathy -

Who set your goal weigh?
BaileyRose replied to helen098's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to my dr my goal weight is 175... Although I think that will be too high for my 5'4" frame. My goal is between 145-160... Who knows though. Whats more important to me is how I feel. I'd like to be a size 8. And I'm not sure what weight that puts me at exactly. So we'll see :-) -
Who set your goal weigh?
Cindy C replied to helen098's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 6 ft tall a healthy weight for you would be anywhere from 136 to 185. Since you have a large frame I would think toward the higher end would be better than the lower. I'm sure you'll figure it out when you get there. -
"That line still has a long way to go"
goirish78 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a 5 week follow up appointment with my surgeon (with whom I've had a generally great experience) on Wednesday. I lost 10 lbs on my 2 week pre-op liquid diet, and 15 more lbs since surgery. Granted, I've been a bit surprised that I haven't lost more, given my size, but I'm not unhappy with the loss (especially if slow and steady loss gives me a better chance at not having to have plastic surgery). However, when my surgeon pulled up my chart on his computer, his comment was "Here's the line that shows your weight loss. That line still has a long way to go." Yet there was no mention of anything else I could try to get the weight to come off faster. Needless to say, it was a bit deflating to have what I clearly know and see all day everyday reiterated, when I'm following my post-op instructions faithfully and have very little control over how quickly or slowly the weight comes off. I wish I would lose a bit faster, but it seems my body has it's own timeline in mind. Sigh. -
I journal everyday. I find I forget what all I've eaten in a day...and will think to myself, I've not really eaten that much today. When, I journal, I can look and see what I've eaten and it helps me to make better choices. It holds me accountable. I don't count calories, or protein...etc. I just jot down on paper what I'm having and it only takes a few seconds. It's like a habit now and doesn't feel like a chore. My diet isn't perfect…I still have chocolate cravings, or eat a few chips here and there. It helps me see how my weight reacts to what I've eaten the last few days. Then I can make adjustments.

Hi, my name is Gwyn, I'm 35, married with two kids. I'm new here. My surgery is scheduled for the 21st of Jan with Dr. Zapata in MTY, MX. I am so looking foward to it. Like it's a new beginning. I just had my second baby in late October. Back in 2000 I had Galbladder surgery and weighed 290lbs. After my surgery I decided to get healthy. Through diet and exercise I got down to 220. Never could get lower. After meeting my husband and two kids later I gained it all back and then some. I'm now 335. It has gotten so much harder to loose the weight. Last year after my first baby I was exercising like crazy and starving with WW. The pounds were not coming off. I just gave up! It just seemed impossible. Since having my second baby and being completely misserable in my own skin I decided to have surgery. I was going to do the Lapband. I did a lot of research and set a date. I talk to some one in a forum about the fills and costs after surgery and she said she was going to have a revision to the sleeve. I had never heard of it then. So I did some research and I'm glad I did. I'm looking forward to having portion control. That was the most enticing thing about this whole surgery. Can't wait to start seeing the pounds come off.

please help w/6m diet....
Jeter2 replied to iwalktheline's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My bmi was 36, I also had sleep apnea and GERD. My band doctor's office told me that the six months my insurance required wasn't just for losing weight but for education on the band, meeting with the dietician, the psychologist, etc. I was told if I lost more then 15 pounds, I'd be under the required bmi of 35. At my 2nd moth visit I had lost the 15 pounds! The dr's office told me not to lose anymore or I wouldn't be approved, which of course I took to mean EAT! So I did, gaining back 8 or 9 pounds at the end of the six months. Long story short, my insurance approved me first time around because I had completed the 6 months of doctor visits, had attempted and lost some weight and met their requirements of a bmi over 35 w/comorbidities. Good Luck! I was banded on 6/18 and have lost 21 pounds. My first fill is today, 7/17. I'm a little nervous! -
Hi All, I have bcbs IL and was told that I needed a referral from PCP to do lap band, no other requirements. My PCP Group requires 6m supervised diet. Do I really go on low cal diet and exercise and work it for 6 months. I bet I could lose 30lbs. Problem is that I have a BMI of 36(w/htn, dm2, carpal tunnel, oa). I don't know what these people really want. I am sure if I lose a bunch of weight they will deny me and I will be crushed. The problem has never been losing, it's keeping it off. I will lose the weight in 6 months and in 2 years I will have blown up and added more. If anyone knows what is really expected out of the 6m diet please let me know. I just don't want a denial in 6 months. I will be devastated. Thanks

NOT STAYING ON 6 MONTH DIET
lovePINK replied to TheSweetesThing84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I kind of went thru the same thing. I was 229 at my first appt in May, gained 7 lbs at my 2nd appt which put me at 236. At my 3rd appt I was only down 3 lbs to 233. So I'm actually up 4 lbs from where I started in May. I bs'ed the first 3 months of my diet....i actually have a stash of phentermine (adipex) that I use for emergencies to drop weight fast. Can I ask why you aren't taking the medication? Everytime I was on it I was able to lose weight fast, but as soon as I stopped it I gained everything back very quickly. My advice would be to take the adipex and try to stay on track for the next few days before ur appt. Also drink lots of water. -
NOT STAYING ON 6 MONTH DIET
Shea replied to TheSweetesThing84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in the same exact place as you. I keep losing and gaining the same 5 lbs. I hate going to my doctor and getting weighed because I know she'll be disappointed. I'm 4 months in my 6 month diet. It's so hard. What happened last time was I was on my period when I went in and of course we gain water weight during that time. I told her I was a few pounds lighter than what the scale revealed which i actually was. She was okay with that and recorded the weight I told her I was. She then said "well I guess every time you come in from now on, you'll probably will be on your period and we as women gain 2-10 lbs on our periods so just keep me posted on your actual weight". So I hope I'm on my period again so I can just give her a number and she'll record that for the sake of the diet. My insurance representative said they arent interested in how much weight I lose or dont lose they want to see if I'm willing to be diligent about going to the doctor on a regular basis. I understand the reasoning behind the 6 month diets but it's also very hard. I'd much rather have to be made to go to a class that actually helped with my mental issues with food because diets for me dont work, if they did I wouldnt be hitting almost 300 pounds. Anyway, I hope it works out for you! -

It really helped me talking to a psychologist. My work situation sounds very similar to yours. I am finding that as I lose weight the tides are shifting. I have continued to do my job well and take care of myself. My coworker who thinks he's my boss is showing his true colors and people are noticing. People are also noticing that I am taking care of myself and my job. I am starting to get much more support from coworkers I never spoke to before. Hang in there. Think of yourself as the butterfly that will emerge from the cocoon. -
questions about weight issue
TKW replied to Justin B.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, I don't think that will be a guaranteed denial. I don't know how they will look at that. To me it is proof how hard it is to lose weight on your own and all the more reason you need the assistance of the band.
