  1. Can't believe how much food people consume just because they are away from home and it's free. Feel like a non-drinker watching everyone get drunk! Don't mean to be judgemental and well aware it could be me a few weeks ago.
  2. I got my surgery 5 months ago and since then Ive had 4 fills. I'm currently at 6.5 cc's. I feel no restriction and no different as to before surgery. I've lost 30lbs but I feel its only because I've really been pushing myself and began running 4 miles up steep hills 5 days a week and I limit myself on portions but find myself feeling hungry often. I got the band as a big aid in helping me lose weight but its saddening to feel like its been useless for me. I cut off so much food out of my life and changed my eating habits on my own. I feel like I can lose track at any moment and gain weight again. My bands max is 10 cc's and I was told average weight loss is 10lbs a month but that hasn't been my case and I'm starting to feel anxious and helpless. Anyone else out there experience my same issue?

hot flushes are back with avengance!

Hiya Meg, The ice cube thing is a good idea... not sure if I could do it in class, but defo at home. Did you find that when the flushes were with you it effected your weight loss? I did well last week but got a bounce up this week =[ It is soooo frustrating when I know that I am not eating more than 1200 cals a day. I'm thinking of really dropping the carbs again for a week or two... but in the past, it hasn't really showed a significant weight loss for me.... I'm in a bit of a pickle as of what to do! I am also wondering if I should just take some time out and just maintain for a while, but then I really want to get to goal... Oh I don't know...lol!

hot flushes are back with avengance!

Some of my friends have experienced good results with a product called Estroven--it's a soy-based supplement that contains phytoestrogens. Evidently it helps even out estrogen and that regulates the hot flashes. Other than that, cotton/linen clothing, avoiding caffeine, hot beverages/soup, no hot pepper, and waterproof makeup (so that it doesn't sweat off)--so sorry you're dealing with this!! It's extremely frustrating. My hot flashes went away after surgery, but in the last couple of weeks, they're back again--I awaken at 4 or 4:15 a.m. (not on purpose!) and then experience a hot flash. It goes away pretty quickly. Before being sleeved, I had them at any time, and you're right, having them at work as a teacher is really challenging in lots of respects. You might look into the supplements to see if you can find an herbal formula that helps. Hang in there!
  5. You are suppose to be on a high protein, low carb, low fat and low calorie diet. Do not drink for 30-60 min before and after you eat. Females 5'9" and under need 50-60 grams of protein daily. Males and females over 5'9" need 60-70 grams of protein daily. Eat your protein before other foods at your meals. Get at least 48-64 ounces of fluids per day. DO NOT drink carbonated beverages! We had week one - clear liquid diet, week 2 full liquid diet, week 3 pureed diet, week 4 soft diet, week 5 soft + ground meats diet, week six regular diet. My husband and I personally used the ISOPURE protein supplement powder - cookies n cream for our protein supplement. You want to use one that's the highest protein for the lowest carbs - isopure is 0 carbs. At least the first couple of weeks you will need the protein supplement to help you get your protein needs in. You really need to keep track every day your protein, fluid, calorie, carb intake till you get the hang of it. We had our surgeries 2/28 and 3/6 and have lost 41 lbs/55 lbs. Of course we also walk 30 min 6 days a week but you should be doing 20-30 min at least 3-4 times per week. Did you not get any info to refer back to from the nutritionist? The lap band is a tool to help you lose weight. Good luck!

    Hey Friends

Hi Jennifer, I was banded on July 8 and am going for a fill next Tuesday. I can't wait for it!!! I feel like I have NO restriction now whatsoever. Right after surgery I couldn't eat a lot. Now is a different story! I'm hoping that after next week I'll be full and satisfied!!
  7. Hi Friends, I am making my first post. I was banded July 14th by Dr Lael (who works with Dr. DeLaGarza) in Progresso Mexico. I am doing great and getting ready for my first fill. I have lost 18lbs in 3 weeks, but I am eating too much again and do not expect to lose more until I get my fill in a few weeks. Did any of the rest of you feel the need for a band so soon after surgery? Jennaband

    Hello from Louisville, KY

Hello and welcome to the boards and congratulations on your decision. BOTH of you. My husband and I are doing it together too. He had his 2 weeks ago and mine is next Friday. I see you are in Louisville..... who's your doctor? I know that the one that we use also has an office in Louisville and was just wondering.

Here is one for you ladies

Having us both go through it has really made it easier on both of us. When I was in nuitrion classes, there was another couple, there surgery was 2 weeks apart, that might be tough. My wife and I were 6 months apart.
  10. So I'm nearly a month post op, rny. My surgery was uncomplicated, as well as my recovery so far. HW was 335, SW 315 CW 304. I'd be lying if I said that I'm thrilled with my rate of weight loss since surgery, but it's consistent losses, something I haven't been able to achieve without surgery. My mind wants so badly to see 299... So I figure it's toying with me. I have lost inches, I'm in a smaller bra size already though. Adapting to eating had been surprisingly easy. It's just a fact off life of what I can/can't have. My hubby made the comment that he lost his eating buddy yesterday. I think him eating junk alone makes him uncomfortably aware of just how much junk he's eating (good!). I seem to tolerate sugars ok so far, things I've read others have dumped on (ketchup) hasn't phased me. The only thing that I regret was stealing a piece of sausage off of the kids pizza... Felt like a flaming metal ball going down...ugh! I've been having a lot of pain from one incision site, my doc said I was doing too much too soon. So I took it easy again and hope to add in exercise this week as I move on to soft foods. I'm not getting all my Water in and I won't drive myself crazy over it, I'm close though. I do need one Protein shake a day to meet my protein goal. After a walk yesterday I understand why they encourage protein after exercise, I felt dizzy and out of sorts. I'm also battling a bad cold.... Coughing makes the side pain worse though (uhh again!) I phone conference my NUT on Wednesday. There is no way I could take in the amount of food on her sample diet, I think I'm good with two meals and one snack a day.

    Elevated WBCs

Hi, does anyone know if it's common for bandsters to have elevated WBCs? I felt tired, so I had a CBC done because I thought I maybe anemic. The good news is that I'm not anemic, but my WBCs were elevated (15.8), which means I have some kind of infection. My family doctor and I could not figure out the source of this infection...I feel completely perfectly fine and nothing hurts. Just had a check up with my Bariatric doctor a couple of weeks ago to get a slight unfill and he said everything looked good. My family doctor was thinking maybe the "infection" and high WBCs are due to having a foreign body inside of me?? Has anyone experienced this??

    Sipping post op?

I set a timer on my phone to go off every 5 minutes. And for the first week, they had to be room temp!

    Mobility back?

Do you have an abdominal binder? If not, even a couple of ace wraps or towels wrapped and pinned can help bind your abdomen so that standing doesn't hurt so much. I was able to stay pretty mobile but I felt much more like normal about a week post-op. Keep moving! Good luck!

    Mobility back?

I had a week of pain at home, but it mostly due to the gas. I had a heat pad that helped with the pain and discomfort, so you might want to try that? The best remedy by far was the walking. I can't tell you how sceptical I was of it, but to my suprise it really helped a lot. Just go slow in the beginning, but do it often. Moving around will also help against extra scar tissue on the insides, as well as prevent blood clots. Good luck, you will see improvement every day! Nilla
  15. Yep it happens! I stopped having those thoughts about 6 weeks out. As soon as you can get some variety in your food intake it really helps...hang in there!!

    Scar cream

Generally you can start using scar cream as soon as the site is superficially healed, so for the body about two weeks. I had good intentions to use scar cream, used it a few times and forgot about it. Most of my scars faded and then they were all cut off during plastics. After plastics I used Biocorneum.

    Boredom causes munchies!!

Neicy, I'll be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine how very terrifying these things can be. The damage already done is just so devestating, it breaks my heart. Please, please stay safe and as far as I'm concerned - you have every right to eat nuts and oreos. You can worry about your weight next week when it's all over. Hugs to you. Please stay safe. Leatha

What is the next steps when you reach your goal?

Nothing happens, pretty much. There's not some ray of light that comes from the heavens and music playing in the background.... you just wake up one day and while on the scales you've reached your goal (often times you pass it) Decisions have to be made at that time...but not quickly. Really take your time to review the past and present. Continue making good (or better) choices with food and your relationship with food. If a week or so goes by and you lose another pound or so....is that okay? If so, keep working it! But if you lose a pound or so and it's not okay...then adjust what you eat. Perhaps increase your calories a bit. Or, do what I did and go in for an adjustment. It may take a few adjustments to stop weightloss. It took me 2. But I'm still loosing. My goal was 150. When I passed it, I thought I'd keep going...I was on a roll afterall. Then 140 was my NEW goal. I seemed to stay around there +/- 3 pounds....for well over 6 months. But now I'm loosing again. I'm down to 132 and am looking a little sickly. But I just remember to eat and eat often and continue to make better choices than the past. Oh, diet? I never dieted. I just ate LESS and made better choices of cooking more than dining out. And for me (and many others) that works. But some find they have to not only restrict the amount of food (the band) but what kind of food they eat (dieting). I've just tried to find a sense of balance between good foods and knowing when it's okay to eat dessert or whatever. Hope this helps.

    Surgery

Hello everyone I'm two weeks alway from my surgery Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Im a little worried. I know im not supposed to compare myself to others but ive been reading the boards here and im worried i am able to eat too much. Some posts Ive read here say you have to eat fluids only for 2 weeks, then mushies for 3 months!! Wheras my Dr said to "build up to eating normally in the next month" . Ive also read that some peoples dr's have said no strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks, wheras my Dr said i could go back to Rollerderby within 2 weeks... I know VSG is a new thing here in Scotland but still!! Im exactly 14 days post op and i can already eat fairly normally. Yesterday I had my Protein shakes/water, a chicken/sweetcorn tortilla wrap, a mini choc bar, some diet coke, some cornflakes and a yogurt. today, ive had my protein shakes/water, a yogurt, 4 chicken McNuggets, a couple of spoons of mashed potatoes, and probably some chicken/rice Soup for dinner.. Im a bit perturbed that i can physically eat these things quite happily (as long as i chew and eat slowly,a new thing for me!)..... i get hungry every couple of hours, eat a little bit, feel full, then a couple of hours later im hungry again (which is again new to me, i used to eat hardly anything during the day, not be hungry, have a huuuge dinner, then feel sick ) Should i just count my blessings and shut up? thanks

    Tuesday

Just continue your pre-op diet and remember to breath!! I received my dietary tool on Dec. 23rd. The two weeks prior was my time to EDIT my pantry and refiterator. If you have a family and are responsible for OTHER meals, you probably should start preparing for how you want to handle your diet vs. preparing for others. I'm a single guy so it was a bit easier for me. I wish I had stuck with my pre-op diet instead of succombing to my LAST What-a-Burger, Popeye's chicken or Mexican breafast. While I lost weight, I just barely lost the required 10 lbs. Quite frankly, I enjoyed the 7:30 am call and the period of time prior to going into surgery. The staff can be very good at calming your nerves and they do start a pre-op IV to help the body prepare for surgery. Post surgery was great, too. No pain. That wore off around mid-Afternoon but was manageable. If you are having hiatal hernia, be prepared for a bit more pain [i didn't] due to the repair and the gas that they use to inflate the stomach. GasXX strips should be on hand and take as needed. I did one about every 2-3 hours and it helped. Also, I didn't lie down until that evening. Sitting, walking and do minimal activities. My niece had her's 2 years ago. She started dusting after her procedure. I did dishes and then a minimal rearragement of one the shelves in the utility room. Most of all...make it a celebration of what is to come. You are taking a great, first step and the medical staff are really there to make it happen. Be realistic...it will feel lilke someone punched you in the stomach but they will give you a perscription for pain. I barely used 1/4 of the liquid Tylenol. The strangest thing is that you will begin to feel liquid hitting the bottom of your stomach about 5 minutes after taking sips [or when the operating meds wear off] of Water. The craziest thing is I LOST my appeetite on Dec. 23rd and I still don't have it. The biggest thing I have to learn is that a full stomach trumps an empty plate. Good luck!

Worried i can eat too much?

My thought process and still is "Just because I can doesn't mean I should". I could easily eat an entire bag of chips, but I choose not to do it. If you are staying within your calorie/protein/carb goals, then you aren't eating too much. But, if you evaluate what you are eating, and you see that you aren't hitting certain goals, and going over in other areas, substitute better choices. I measured my portions, tracked my intake and stayed on target to ensure I would hit my goal weight and change my relationship with food. If you don't want to track, and you want to eat like you did pre-op just in smaller portions that's the path you can take. You are completely in control of how you lose weight, and if you eating these foods, in these amounts are working for you and your happy with your results then you are doing what's right for you. I will say that at 18 months out, I struggle to get in 4 chicken nuggets, and can not eat a chicken wrap. If/when your weight loss slows down, or you stall, you might have to evaluate what you are eating. I chose to stay on mushies for so long because it was easier for me to get Protein in from food sources by sticking to mushy food. Also, I can eat twice as much now that I could at 2-3 months out so I'm really glad I learned new habits, and really focused on not eating junk food that didn't count towards any of my goals. It's way harder to make better choices now, but if I want to maintain, I have to make the best choice most of the time or I'll see a gain. I know myself well enough to know that if I didn't change those bad habits, I would not succeed long term so I chose to be more strict, watch my carbs, keep my protein up and not eat more than what was recommended by my guidelines.
  23. Use that band to only control the hunger. If you're hungry - get a fill. Use your exercise to burn the fat off. Expecting to get anywhere near goal without intense exercise is probably Wizard of Oz stuff. And I'm a firm believer that exercise isn't always sufficient exercise. Your body, over time, will learn to become more efficient and stronger - you'll have to push harder and find new ways to challenge yourself to get the same results consistently. Just walking, in time, isn't going to cut it. And remember that less food is not always better. You need fuel to keep the metabolism fire burning. Keep your meals spread out and get sufficient Protein. I eat at or above 2000 calories a day, well spread out, and all containing sufficient protein. I'm intensly exercising 5+ days a week. I know this stuff comes easier for guys, but the same principle applies to women. Water intake is also a HUGE factor. When my metabolism is cranking it's hard to drink enough water to keep the pee running clear. I can drink near or above a whole gallon of pure water a day (aside from coffee/tea) and still have a yellowish tinge. (TMI I know)....... You have to keep flushing yourself out, not to mention your burning calories as your body is processing the water. Good luck and keep up the fight! Brad

    Weight Loss Question

For most people weight loss isn't consistent on a daily or even weekly basis. Not just for the first few weeks, but throughout. That's why it is good to only weigh once a month or at your post-op doctor's visits, if the lack of consistency is going to stress you out. You can also use a site like Trend Weight to get the bigger picture. A lot of people imagine their weight loss plotted on a graph will look like a smooth, straight line headed down to the right. Instead, imagine the outline of a staircase plotted onto the graph. And the staircase was designed and built by people who were drunk and couldn't see very well. As far as expectations as to how much you will lose -- please, I beg you, put that idea aside. It seems like every day someone is on here, posting that they are freaked out because they aren't losing as much as they expected, and they always expect some insane amount of weight loss. Just get rid of the idea of expectations around weight loss and focus on your own expectations of how well you are going to comply with your post-op program. That's really the only thing you can control, and therefore the only thing that is worth feeling either good or bad about. Good luck!
  25. So surprised at how well I feel, bored, but good. I'm getting the staples out today and hopefully will not fell like such a prisoner. I have had ZERO tolerance problems. (rebelled and had a bite of my husbands scrambles eggs. No problem). Sticking to the blended program for about another 4 weeks and then good to go. I'm having one problem... I hope I know when I'm full. I feel like I'm always wanting more at the moment. Thank all for this forum it has been beyond helpful!!!
