Sounds like she has a case of Diarrhea of the Mouth. Remember everyone is different. Just bc one person had a complication from who knows what surgery they had and what type of pre existing problems they had ahead of time, doesn’t mean you will. Try to think positive thoughts and don’t let her get in your head with the negative comments. Meanwhile this is very exciting change coming up for you!! Am I losing too fast after Gastric Sleeve?
JMJames92 replied to Shanibani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wouldn't worry about it at all. The weight comes off the fastest at the beginning and eventually it will slow down and even plateau at some points. When I had my VSG surgery I lost 30 pounds (give or take) in the first two weeks. I had my surgery at the end of August in 2016 and weighed 271 on the day of my surgery and by New Years Day I was down to ~180. Right after this I plateaued for a while. As long as you aren't having any health issues as a result of this rapid weight loss I would recommend just riding this weight loss wave for as long as you can 😆 Congratulation on your surgery and good luck on you weight loss journey! -
Boyfriends Mom! WTF
mswillis5 replied to JustJazzy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I told one of my coworkers and they said they knew someone who had surgery and lost the weight and gained all of it back. This was before my surgery and they asked if I really wanted to still do it. Even though they were not 100% on board with me at the beginning, they knew I wasn't doing this alone. (My wife and I had surgery the same day). I had to explain to her that it really is only a tool that helps with weight loss but that the mental aspect of eating has to change or you can gain the weight back. You are going to do great! I like to say that the more that we work towards this, the more we can show that WLS surgery really does help to save our lives. There are quite a few bad influences out there that don't believe it will work and I like to show them that I am not one of those statistics and that it can work. -
Am I losing too fast after Gastric Sleeve?
mswillis5 replied to Shanibani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I go with your surgeon that you may be losing quickly but it seems to be similar to me and my wife. I was 260 during preop on October 27th and am only 172 today and that is over the last 140 days. If you average that over the time period, I have lost 0.63lbs every day since starting preop. The weight loss for me was around 1-2 lbs per day for the first 3 months or so and has started to slow down with plenty of stalls in between where I only lost 1 lb in a week. My wife has been similar in this weight loss with around 1 stall for 1 week every month. She was 274 during preop and is down to 198 today. You might be losing quickly but it seems to be inline with what my wife and I were able to achieve and we were a bit less weight than you were. -
Am I losing too fast after Gastric Sleeve?
Shanibani replied to Shanibani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you @jaelzion My family has had me so worried as of late, telling me that I'm going to end up in the hospital like my mother's best friend's daughter (who had the bypass) because of my fast weight loss, that it's not only worrying me, but also upsetting me... I would tell them my weight via text all the time when I'd hit a mile marker, and then once I did, they'd message me saying something like "holy crap, that's a lot of weight." until finally tonight my mother called and was so worried... Mind you, they're all incredibly supportive about the weight surgery, but now they think I'm restricting myself so much, and not eating enough, that I'm going to end up sick. I haven't had to have bloodwork since well before surgery... so perhaps i'll talk to my doctor about it at my next appointment to see when/if I need it... - I will say I have a hard time with these supplement chewables that I'd much rather just get swallows, but I know these are what they want me on... Sad to say, I hate taking anything from a bottle, so even the swallowable ones would probably never get taken either... I need to start remembering to take them. -

I would trust your surgeon on this one. A lot of different factors go into determining how fast you lose. You started with a higher BMI, which often translates to faster loss (especially early on). You're eating a very restricted diet. You're tall, which means your base metabolism rate may be higher than average, so you could be running more of a calorie deficit than a lot of us would. You're going to the gym twice a week, so building muscle. While it's true that muscle does weigh more than the same volume of fat, adding muscle mass ramps up your base metabolism rate so you burn more calories even when you are at rest. Even your previous dieting history can affect how quickly you lose - having yo-yo dieted all my life, my body is quick to start compensating for a drop in calories. If you haven't dieted as much, your body may compensate less, leading to quick weight loss. I don't know how old you are but if you're relatively young that helps too. Be diligent about getting your blood work checked and if it continues to look good, you're probably fine. If your doctor is not concerned, I'd just stick with the program and enjoy the ride. -
It is definitely very common for your gallbladder to act up with rapid weight loss.. Having my gallbladder out is what actually led me to getting wls though, because the surgeon saw how bad my liver looked and suggested wls. So hopefully, it won't happen to you, but there is a possibility. It's not too bad of an operation luckily.. I didn't even have to stay overnight for it. Am I losing too fast after Gastric Sleeve?
Shanibani posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello, My name is Shannon but everyone calls me Shani. I am 34 years old and my start weight was 335 as of January 09, 2020. I didn't get to have my surgery until January 11, 2021 due to Covid and other medical issues... I'm sure a lot of people have had frustrations over that... I could've had it in July, but sadly, that didn't happen. Instead, I had my surgery January 11th, 2021 at which time I weighed in at 309. - I'm a 5'8 female, so I'm kinda tall... built more like my father than my mother... I don't have another appointment with my doctor until mid-April, but my family keeps freaking me out saying I'm losing weight too fast. I'm down to 265.4 as of today's date. - I've been watching the scale every day (not as a bad thing, just to check every day... if I lost, I lost, if I didn't, oh well) and I've noticed my weight can range anywhere from .80 of a pound to 2.0 pounds in a day.... so, like I said, I've lost about 44 lbs as of this conversation... Obviously, I'm only 2 months (and a couple days) out from sleeve surgery so I'm still in soft food diet area... and I know my ideal weight is gonna be somewhere around 160-170 most likely... At the rate I'm going, if I didn't plateau somewhere, in six months, I'd be at my goal weight. I am the pickiest eater to begin with, so when the doctor told me I'd have to go on a strict diet, I had no issue with this... I told him, just give me one to three things I'm allowed to eat, and I'll be fine... he said, eggs, canned chicken, soft veggies... so, that's exactly what I do. My meal every day consists of 2 handfuls of frozen peppers/onion mix, 1 egg, and a third to a quarter can of chunk chicken, mixed together like an omelette, with a few dollops of salsa on top for the spicyness of it and two tablespoons of spicy sauce (only 25 calories per 2 tablespoons). I eat that in a bowl twice a day RELIGIOUSLY - nothing else. If I eat a third bowl (like for dinner) I start gaining weight. ( tried eating 3x a day for 4 days, I gained 5 lbs). I can only get down 2 bottles of water (16.9 oz) every day, else wise I get nauseous from the water intake. I gym 2 times a week, basically because I don't have a car, and my mother or sister have to take me but I do simple things at home to try to exercise as well... Gym days I plateau. I don't lose weight. Like at all... and yes, I know muscle weighs more... so it's a non-issue for me... But my family makes me wonder if I'm losing too fast, too soon... My sister had the bypass, ( she only had to lose 70lbs though, where as I have to lose 170 to get to my ideal weight.) When I first spoke to the doctor back in February, he saw no issue with my weight loss amount... Said he sees it more in men than in females but it's not uncommon (ergo why I said I'm built more like my father than mother) and that each person is different... Should I be worried that I'm not eating that third meal? I'm not hungry for it, so I don't feel like I need it... not to mention the weight gain it gives me that I don't like... I've even tried just doing some hummus and carrots as a third meal, and still gained weight... so I dropped it back down to 2 meals, and boom, I'm back to dropping 2 lbs a day for 3 days straight... today I lost .8 lbs... which brings me to 265... Any thoughts? -

I like the response to the question 'is weight loss surgery cheating?' on this website https://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/weight-loss-surgery-cheating.html A couple of other articles that may help frame further conversations around 'cheating or the easy way out', I do like the concept of the 'healthy way out' https://www.smartshape.ca/wls-not-the-easy-way-out/ https://bariatrictimes.com/healthy-way-out-march-2018/ -

Your stats are similar to mine and you’ve lost more than me! My team also said I should be losing faster but I am ok with my losses. Yes, it’s a snail’s pace, but it’s on a downward trend and I have only had one tiny stall. I think you’re doing just fine. -
Working out on the preop diet
Jnfinney replied to Lahela's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn’t set a weight loss goal for the pre op diet, nor did my surgeon. I lost around 13 pounds the whole 2 weeks, which I think is good because my starting weight was 228 lbs. -
So it begins...I hope
lizonaplane replied to Just1Starfish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have heard that once you start the pre-op diet they don't count any weight loss against you. Did you talk to the program to see if their advice is to gain weight? I am in the process of jumping through hoops too. My BMI was 49.6 but it's now down to 46. I don't think it will get too much lower. I've lost 18 lbs but I seem to have stalled. I don't have any back pain and I didn't start having any joint pain until I started exercising in the last two months after being really sedentary for the entire pandemic. Good luck! -
Working out on the preop diet
RickM replied to Lahela's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First - you should avoid setting weight/time goals because you have little influence over them; lose 15 lb, that's great, but it might take a week, a month or two. Don't knock yourself out about it. OAGB has the right idea that you can only generate a certain level of caloric deficit to drive your loss, That said, there are variations, primarily based upon manipulating your body's water weight. When we first start a major loss effort, we often experience the "easy 10" which represents the typical amount of water weight that we lose early on by burning up our glycogen stores (some who start bigger with more muscle mass and fat may lose a bit more from this - maybe 15 or so). Take this freebie and run with it, but don't agonize over how much this "bonus" might be - it is what it is. Concentrate more on setting yourself up for long term success by learning how to eat a healthy, sustainable diet consistent with long term weight control vs. quickie loss. When I was doing the 6 month insurance program, I ignored weight loss and concentrated on establishing the healthy eating habits that would need five or ten years in the future. That turned out to be worth about fifty lb, or about a third of my excess weight without agonizing over the scale. Learn to eat healthy and let the surgery do its job for you. Good luck, -

The weather's breaking so I should do better w my weight loss. -
My husband over the weekend told me that after the 24tth I will be “cheating” to lose weight. Super angry about that. he has never been supportive of this and noticed my weight loss over the weekend as I was putting on leggings (he noted my legs were super skinny- aka- ankles NOT swollen twice their normal size). So many eye rolls here it’s a miracle I can still see straight. BUT: I am getting excited. It’s getting real! I have my class on Wednesday and pre op on Friday. And today is my last day of work until Mid/end April!!!!! (I’m a sub teacher and following surgery I will take two weeks, then the following week is spring break.... people don’t usually call in sick right after vacation so I will likely not get called until May). I am thanking my lucky stars I got in because they are doing another round of shut downs in Europe due to covid. The trend with the covid surges has typically been to hit Europe first then the USA. 😬

ChubRub replied to chiquitatummy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't tell anyone other than my husband. I just didn't want to deal with judgment, gossip, etc, and I definitely didn't need people giving me advice. I haven't been in my office in over a year due to Covid, and look forward to surprising everyone someday! I contemplated cutting and coloring my hair to really freak them out! LOL!! I did tell my mom about my PS, which was more of a test than anything, to see if she tells anyone. She's horrible with keeping secrets! I don't care if word of my PS gets out, b/c it's pretty obvious to anyone that sees me in a bikini anyway. I'll be curious to see how long it takes her to tell my secret though! LOL!! -
Hello....first time poster here. I've started the process to have a consultation with a surgeon for Gastric sleeve surgery. As of now, I'm about 5 lbs short of 40 BMI, and have absolutely no co-morbids. I've watched the educational video and have received their information packet in the mail. I have been eating and trying to gain weight (which sounds completely counter-intuitive) because I REALLY want to have surgery. I had started the process twice before...actually had the psych eval, and went through 6 months of medically supervised weight loss, and tried every diet known to man. I got discouraged with the medically supervised weight loss because I plateau'd for several weeks and then despite changes, I actually gained weight. None of that program was covered by my insurance, so when they said I needed to come in more often (3x/week instead of once every 2 weeks), I just stopped. I had always thought I was 5'1" but at my most recent doctor's appointment they said 152CM, which comes out to 4' 11-3/4". Current weight is 201.5, which all calculates out to BMI 39.6. I've held off on taking the next steps in the packet because I'm not yet 40 BMI. My insurance is BC/BS Federal employees...anyone have experience with them? What happens if I get approved and then lose weight on the 2 week diet? I'm going to barely qualify as it is. Anxiety level is very high, but I want to do this. I'm sick of hating every picture I see of myself, and constantly being tired from lugging around 85 extra pounds. (sigh). I'm most concerned about not qualifying on insurance. Any encouragement would be very welcome.... Thanks!

Not hungry but I want to eat!!

I am so 12 days post op and the head hunger has mostly subsided. I am feeling so much better, barely any pain, and I am able to do more around the house. I still have to take it easy because one day hubby and I went to 2 stores and by the time we got home I was beat and slept for the rest of the day. Now hubby has had me in the house for the last two days and monitors me lol he really think he is my doctor but he has been extremely supportive could not ask for better. Also, I don’t know if it’s the vitamins and calcium or maybe it’s just in my head but my skin is glowing, my teeth looks more whiter, my hair has gotten thicker it’s amazing! Does anyone else see these changes or any other good changes besides weight loss? -
I freaked out when I was losing my hair. I was losing clumps of it at a time, and would literally cry in the shower. I even resorted to measuring it. I was losing approx. 3-4 grams every time I washed it (every 4 days). It happened in months 3-6. Now I am almost 7 months out, and happy to say that I am not losing anymore. I know it will take a while for it grow back, but that is ok as long as I am not losing. My nutritionist recommended that I start taking Flaxseed Oil 1,000 mg a day, and increase my protein. It worked! She also told me that none of the commercial products work.

Sorry for your loss. Good luck with your surgery. It sounds like you have already made up your mind for better health. That is a huge part of it. If you really want it, you will do it.
-
I had a revision October 29th last year and started at 185. The first month I lost just about 8 pounds, since it took a week and a half to loose the 10 pounds I gained in the hospital. After that, I started to see a steady drop, but like catwoman7, revision weight loss is definitely slower than the original sleeve. Don't be discouraged, it will level out and the weight will drop. As someone on social media posted - "weight loss surgery is all about making better decisions" - about what we eat, how we exercise and how we view our health!
-
weight loss after revision is almost always slower than it is after a "virgin" surgery, and on top of that, you're starting off at a much lower weight than most of us, which also means slow weight loss. And...you're about three weeks out. Just in time for the infamous "three week stall" to boot.
-
not much you can do about it other than keep on top of your protein and supplements so it doesn't get any worse than it would otherwise. Mine lasted about three months. Fortunately, I didn't lose enough for others to notice. here's an article about it: https://www.healthline.com/health/hair-loss-after-surgery#causes

I'm 68 and had revision from a 1984 surgery, VBG, to R&Y on February 15th this year. I've lost 55 pounds. Food doesn't taste right but many say that will improve with time. Right now it helps with the weight loss because I only eat for nourishment. I've had no complications other than food tasting different but that's pretty much par for the course.

You can’t stop it unfortunately. Your natural hair loss cycle has been accelerated as a result of the shock to your body (surgery, reduced calories, change of diet, etc.). As what usually happens as you shed hair new hair is growing. It’s just your new hair is growing at it’s usual rate & it’s not as noticeable as the loss. It will slow & revert to your usual rate of loss usually after about 3 months +/-. It’s just hard to see those clumps of hair. Best advice is not to stress too much about it if you can. Stress will only make it worse. Some people will say biotin or other supplements helped but they don’t. The hair that is shedding is already dead. (All the exposed hair on your head is dead.) The supplements may only help your new growth. A lot of us cut our hair so the new growth didn’t have as long to grow to be even with the rest of our hair. You may notice a change in texture too which is from the anaesthetic. You have to wait for that to grow out.
