    The Turkey Challenge

Belle's Progress: Weight, gain/loss: -3lbs. (Enacting my revenge!) Goals met: Worked out well over 4 times last week even though I was traveling! No snacking at all! Other Issues: I went on a pre-Thanksgiving diet, since I am now unemployed (turned in my 2 weeks' notice) I have amped up my exercise routine and it's paying off! 11/1 244 lbs. 11/8 244 lbs. 11/15 242 lbs. 11/22 239 lbs. 11/29 ??? lbs. 2 more lbs. to Turkey Challenge Goal! Will I make it or will I fall victim to Thanksgiving food and liquor?
  2. Sandy, Thanks for your response! My health was that I was pre-diabetic, high cholosterol, fatty liver, pallops (spelling?) had to be removed when they did the pre-op endoscopy and during surgery a hernia was repaired. I also was really tired a lot and was told I have nodules on my thyroid, which is badly messed up - thus the weight gain. I now have lots of energy and I'm only 5 days out! Dr, Barverman, NEW Program in Newport Beach, CA is one of a team of 3 doctors who only do WLS. They have preformed over 2,500 of them and seem to be very enthusiastic about their work. They have had 1 death due to taking an extremely high risk patient. As far as complications, their record is the best in the country according to the third party they all report stats to. I had 2 weeks of a pre-op diet. I did not like it at all - they use a product called Bariatric Advantage. To say it tastes bad is an understatement. I best to you! 43 pounds down and counting - wow, congrats!!!

    Calling all A11s!!

Ms lady, so glad it went well. If you get back on your program it will all even out. Sometimes we just have Water weight gain so maybe it's that. Bobrocky, hope you next fill will do the trick. T'giving is going to be a challenge for all of us so stay on course. Chich, congratulatuons! 30 lbs is amazing. Let us all know how the fill works out. You're doing an awesome job. Genesishanna, steady loss is good. I've heard a lot about Zumba. Sounds like fun. Keep it up I bet it is amazing exercise. I've had lots of company since last Wed. I've fixed dinner for 20 three times and I am exhausted. Our youngest son Daniel flew in from NY Wed with fiancee and my hubby's niece and her whole family came up from GA. We had an engagement party Friday nite for our closest friends to meet Rebecca and I cooked an Italian dinner with lasagna, chicken parm, and Pasta with cream sauce, salad and dessert for 20 that night. We had enough leftovers for Sat nite.for everybody so I didn't have to cook again. Then Sun we had T'giving dinner for 20 also. Everybody goes home today and tomorrow we are taking the kids and grandkids to see the Rockettes Christmas Show. Thursday my hubby's sister and hew new husband are coming until Sun. It's been a lot of cooking and lots of fun. I have not overdone yet but have eaten a few things I probably should not have eaten. So far I have not gained any. I am back on my program and will start exercising again tomorrow or Wed. Still sitting on 20lbs loss and hopefully can start loosing again soon. I am not in a race with anyone and will take i slowly and steady until I am at goal. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and stay on your programs the best way you can. If you falter don't bet yourself up, jump back on the program and don't look back. We can do this! Blessings, GG
  4. Hey forum family.. Has anyone close to you act as though they were not supportive in your weight loss decision? I guess I am having a hard time with it because my best friend and I (or should I rethink her being my best friend!!!) have been friends for 19 years. I have shared with her my thoughts on having surgery and she does not agree. Now I am my own woman, therefore, I would NEVER change my mind about it based on how she feels.it is just shocking to know that I do not have her support. Now my friend is over weight, has always been. My weight gain started within the last 6 yrs. It leads me to believe that she may be somewhat jealous. I dont want to think this way but I really have no other choice. Please share your input and/or thoughts.

    "Another crutch"

That's great! I too lost weight on my own many times but guess what? it came back but if I had a band in me I could have tried to stop the weight gain sooner. For me Losing is the easy part, keeping it off is the hard part. If you ever stray you may find yourself wanting to fill your band and it will be there for you wether you need it or not. That's is he bonus of being banded

    The Turkey Challenge

Belle's Progress: Weight, gain/loss: -2lbs. (Take that scale!) Goals met: Worked out 4 times last week! Snacking is at a minimum. Hoping that will be further reduced when I get a fill and get rid of this stressful job. Other Issues: None this time, but next time I'm sure I will have a book to write! 11/1 244 lbs. 11/8 244 lbs. 11/15 242 lbs. 11/22 ??? lbs. 11/29 ??? lbs.
  7. Well....where to begin.... I'll start by saying I'm a positive person. I hate negativity! However, I'm finding my thoughts to be NEGATIVE lately. I was banded on 9/21/11. The following week my weight was down 25lbs. About 2 weeks after surgery I began to get hungry and I seemingly lost any restriction I may have had. I didn't sweat it because I was scheduled for my first adjustment on 10/25, thinking I would surely have a successful fill w/ restriction. SURPRISE!!! I had a 3cc fill with absolutely no restriction. I haven't had a weight gain...on a positive note I have actually maintained my current loss at 25lbs. But, I can eat as much as I did before the band. I had this surgery so I would no longer have to fight the "diet" mentality but, instead could have the smaller portion meals, slim and healthy life-style everlasting. I hope I'm not one of those whom I've read about who wake up one year later still fighting to reach a sweet spot with the adjustments. My greatest fear is to put on the pounds verses losing them. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? How many adjustments does it take to get to your happy home? I'm scheduled to have my 2nd adjustment on Tuesday the 21st. I really don't know how I'll handle it if this adjustment doesn't give me some restriction. I don't care that Turkey Day is 2 days later, I'll forfeit all of it for the success of restriction. I hope I have exchanged a thousands of dollars for this worry . Glenda045
  8. I unfilled my band completely in October last year for cancer surgery and chemotherapy and I had very little trouble with weight gain. I really have patted myself on the back for a job well done, loudly and publicly, lol, but in truth, on reflection I think I had some assistance, what with being so sick. I remained unfilled for seven months and gradually over the last five have refilled my band up to decent restriction (althoug h I've not found the sort of restriction I had before, I've got what I can live with, thanfully as my band is 0.2cc from full). I found it very easy at first, I still couldnt eat a lot, and stuck to very small meals and healthy foods. It took months for my appetite to expand, I began to notice that dinner would leave me wanting, becuase I always restricted through willpower what I ate between meals fill or no fill. That sort of head hunger stuff was just the same. I kept running and going to the gym right through treatment. But I did gradually begin to eat more. Now with fill going back in, I dont feel any "different" like I was expecting to, but my meals are much smaller again. I might feel the same, thinking I had toast for breakfast, but then I realise that once again, the idea of two pieces of toast like normal people eat is like a major pig out, absolutely excessive and I realise yes, that restriction is there. Restriction really isnt a tangible thing that you can feel, it just subtly changes how much you eat, and you have to listen hard for it, and ignore the head hunger - that isnt real hunger. But its interesting to see what its like when restriction has gone isnt it? I think it has made me a better bandster, I kind of needed a kick in the pants after six years.
  9. Ladonna, Are you still taking your pain meds? They might be the source of your hives. Or, if you are using milk to mix your Protein shakes, it might be giving you a bad reaction. I used milk in one of mine early post-op and spent the next couple of hours in the bathroom regretting my milk. I am definitely lactose intolerant, but that is usually temporary. Also, chicken broth has some protein, so you are getting a little tiny bit. Don't worry about the protein this early, just concentrate on sipping your Water. If you are hurting when you drink, you may be drinking too quickly or too large of a sip. Lots of people here report that it's easier to pour the liquid into a small medicine cup (like a nyquil cap) and then sip the liquid from that cup. It definitely makes you drink more slowly. You might also try "drinking" from a teaspoon and waiting a few minutes between each teaspoon full. Let the liquid trickle down your throat. I had lots of pain from drinking too quickly myself. I was over-filling my tummy and that hurts especially bad when you are newly post-op. Lastly, the weight gain you have experienced is probably from all the fluids that were pumped into you during and just after surgery. That will resolve itself in a few days. Good luck on your journey!!! And, welcome to the loser's bench!
  10. Yup. All normal. You're doing great! The gas still happens to me sometimes when i drink or eat too quickly. Mine don't often come all the way out, but I can feel it traveling up inside me. The weight gain is from the fluid from the IV. It will come off quickly. And your sore incision is probably where they removed your stomach. Mine was pretty sore for a couple weeks and was the last to heal up. Again, all normal! Good luck.
  11. Anyone can be unhappy. Not just about loss of food. It may have had an influence, but it is not to blame totally for someones problems. This young lady obviously had other issues to have caused the weight gain in the first place. It is just a loss of the coping mechanism for this young lady. I am sorry for her family that she chose to end her life. I have not told many people because of they way they react. I took a great deal of time to contemplate my surgery before I had it. I had a year of weight loss counseling, already had adopted some different eating habits, exercise habits and had time to wrap my head around it. I had my psyche counseling and then after approval by insurance, went to support groups for two months before proceeding with my surgery. I had given myself time to make the mental changes. I told a co worker about my surgery, asked her not to share( she is a manager and I needed to let someone at work know that I could be out longer when I had my surgery) and she had the surgery herself after I told her. She went to Mexico as a self pay. She did not think about it more than two weeks. No counseling, no follow up, no support groups. Then she has shared it with others-actually everyone-two other people have gone to Mexico for the surgery since then (August) . I am really concerned that she and these others are not prepared. I do not want that on my conscience. I am choosing not to tell anyone else unless necessary. I asked her not to share that I had surgery, but think she has done so already. It is my choice to tell, not someone else's. On the other side, I hope they are happy with their weight loss. I hope they are able to cope well. I am very happy that I can use this tool to control my own weight. I don't want to hear of other peoples horror stories. I do not want to influence other people to choose something that may not be right for them. I hope they have made choices on their own. They have to live with their choices, good or bad. Choose to keep what you want to hear and dismiss what is not important. Thank those for compliments and tell the others that have negative stories that your appreciate their concern, but you're good with it and walk away. This is long winded, roll eyes, sorry.

    Scared to start solid foods?

THanks guys! Tomorrow will be week number 4 but the surgen has cleared me for solids. I like the advice of putting the fork down. I have been a fast eater all of my life. always the first one done. I guess im just a little nervous about weight gain. I dont wanna undo what I have worked so hard for. I guess I figure if I had the will power to not eat anything solid for the last 4 weeks, I can do ANYTHING!!! lol I am so glad I found these boards and all of you! What an awesome support system this is!!
  13. What do these people think is "crazy"? The money spent, the risk of surgery to your health, the restrictive diet, not understanding the procedure....etc. I think I would ask people to define what they think is "crazy", then perhaps I would have a response. I haven't told anyone about my surgery, except my husband and doctors, in order to avoid these conversations. Perhaps when they notice me losing weight and asking more questions, I may or may not answer them. For me, this surgery is a tool not only to help me lose weight, but maintain that weight loss for the long term. I have tried many other ways of losing weight and have been successful on several of them. I have never been successful at maintaining the weight loss and have gained back all that I lost plus more. I think it is crazier to live like that than to find a tool that will help me maintain my weight loss and regain my health. The crazy diets and following weight gain are far more dangerous to my health (physical and mental) than this surgery and ultimately this is why I chose this route. I wish you luck in dealing with the "crazy" comments.

    SEX...TMI??? I Know But I Gotta "ASK"!!!

way better!!!! whoo hoo! just discovered a position that used to be my favorite before weight gain, and havent been able to do in a very long time. i was just able to do it again loving it!! so is the hubby! i agree with the others that it is his self confidence going down worrying that other men are gonna start noticing you. my hubby has already told me that he is worried about that. i told him that i chose him before i gained the weight and there is no reason for me to not keep chosing him after i lose it too. he loved me through all of this and has been my biggest supporter. even when i was at my highest weight and i had to step on the scale and was obviosly worried about his reaction to how much i weighed he said to me, "dont worry about how much you weigh baby, i love you no matter what your size is." how could any other man take my eyes off of him when he loves me through thick and thin, literally.
  15. Okay....Got my first fill and I am finally starting to lose weight again. Lost all the weight I gained from surgery. Weight gain during and after surgery is normal and not a bad thing. Your body needs time to heal. I can tell that I have a fill. I have found that I have lost inches by my clothes not fitting. Very HAPPY and can't wait for more WEIGHT LOSS!! :)

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?

Well said! This is the sensible approach to a lifestyle you can maintain for the rest of your life. This panic over the holidays and the "inevitible" weight gain - that's fat thinking. That's all or nothing, food controls me and my lapband should do ALL the work thinking and whilst you indulge in that, you are never going to truly beat obesity. You can keep your band ultra tight so that it controls you with an unpleasant hard stop - until it slips or erodes or something forces you to unfill it. Or you can exercise some self control, allow a bit of indulgence on Thanksgiving day, eat healthy the rest of the week and do some extra exercise - put your shoes on and go out for a walk every day if that's all that's available while you're away. There is really nothing to stop you doing any of that. The only reason why a whole ton of extra food and alchohol make it down your gullet and cause a weight gain will because you choose to allow it. Christmas is a hard time, but normal people gain a couple of pounds occasionally too, and a couple of pounds is easy to lose. But a bit of self control and some extra effort around the difficult days will probably net that out. whilst I was unfilled and afraid of the same lapses in judgement, I would start my meal with a fairly large serve of raw vegies - carrot, cucumber, capscicum, mushrooms and a big glass of Water. It really did take the edge of enough to keep me to a bandster sized portion of the less healthy foods that were put in front of me. And despite having chemo, and feeling crap, I still ran and went to the gym almost daily. If you want it bad enough, you can do anything. Keepign it up long term is pretty hard, but you will get some fill eventually.

When to give up Diet pop?

I am going on a year post-op and STILL drink 3 or 4 a week. I see no harm and I'm still losing weight, ~170 pounds down now. I see no harm. I've read that some consider it a factor in weight gain but I've never seen any real explanation as to why exactly it does. I've heard of it sparking desire for sweets but it hasn't in me. I will continue to enjoy an occasional can a few days a week till I see something definitive saying it's doing me harm.

    Discouraged:-(

I have not had my surgery yet, but I really believe that when you are so physical while you where training your metabolism gets really cranked up so when you had your second surgery and you physical workouts have shrunk down so far your body is not burning as much, ie. weight gain or no weight loss...My husband is a runner and did the Marine Corps Marathon if he does not train for awhile he gains...How about walking some more and add hand weights to your routine? I live in GA, too and know you can find some really great parks with killer hills!!! You can do it just take a breath and move, move, move.....))) Stay Cool

    Discouraged:-(

Hello friends. I wanted to ask for some advice/encoragement. I had my surgery in Jan of 2010 and had lost 70 pounds! When I moved to GA in July I started gaining when I saw my new surgeon. After 4 months of complaining of hunger and weight gain(20 pounds!!!!) they finally dug deeper and found that I had a leak in the port. I had that replaced on Mon Nov 7th and at that time they also gave me a fill. I feel restricted and am back to eating my 3-4 oz portion meals 3 times per day and a protein shake in the morning between breakfast and lunch. However...my weight continues to go up!!! What gives?? I am soooo discouraged because not only was I so excited to finally start losing again, but sad because I can't exercise for 3-4 weeks. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in February so I had to stop running and will have to start all over again when they clear me for exercise. Could I still be retaining fluid from the surgery? My site is still a teensy bit swollen but not that bad...Any suggestions? I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do or what is wrong with me:-( Please help!!!
  20. Im guessing that most of the people here are also going from large to small and might not have size 8th if they need size 14s and such... Perhaps a weight GAIN forum?
  21. I am one of those people who needs to understand the why behind everything. I've done everything by the book and I have been up three pounds the last two days. I haven't had over 1200 calories and most days and under that. i am definitely having a calorie deficit. So I know this isn't true weight gain, but what is it? I know your monthly friend can cause it, but that's not for a week. I haven't had a lot of sodium. I know the weight loss should be slow, but at 1200 calories a day, I am expecting results.
  22. I'm suffering from several symptoms of PCOs: weight gain, hirsutism (increased hair growth on the face, arms and belly), irregular and often nonexistent menses, "spotting" and Patches of darker, velvety skin on the legs. I read that the surgery might solve it. Mine is due in less than 2 weeks (yay!). However I am still worried that my eating habits caused some permanent, irreversible damage to my body. For instance, ovarian cysts, which tend to evolve into tumors sometimes. If I lose weight and kiss the other PCOs symptoms goodbye, do the cysts disappear or do they stay for good? If you could tell from your own experiences, I'd love to hear.

Glad to here you are doing so well with that jogging thing Lmom1980...For some reason I still run out of breath too quickly for jogging so I am still walking - walking faster, but still walking. Sorry to hear about your feet and winter coming. I really don't have any suggestions for your feet except to massage them with peppermint lotion at bedtime - that really seems. to help sore tire feet - as for winter - I live in Florida so I have no excuse for not getting outside and hoofing my 3-4 miles each day. How do you like Zumba? I am looking for a class here that fits my schedule. I am afraid I will look FAT and stupid but I am willing to give it a shot. My weight loss is moving right along - down 64.5 pounds as of last night - only 51 more to go - woo hoo,....I feel great and have absolutely no problems with my surgery..Hope you are contiuing to do well and will make it throught the Thanksgiving Holidays (if you are in the US) with out any weight gain... Take care - Short and Still Slightly Chunky (Melinda)
  24. Same boat here. This food addictions SUCKS with my weight gain I get down about it and all I want to do it eat. Vicious Cycle. I actually started a thread earlier this morning called Pre-Op Blues and this is what I wrote: So I am having pre-op blues. My weight keeps going up WTF?!?!?!?! My first appointment with the surgeon I was 254 and now I am 257. I am having my second appointment next wednesday (11/16) and I don't want to be heavier. Why can't I get it together? I know its all mental because I know I can do it. Is it that I am eating like its my last meal or that the I will only take it seriously when the doctor finally puts me on the pre-op? What a mental brain fart!!!! ARGHHHH!!!! I just hope that I am not doing this for anything. The Lapband better b*tch slap my a$$ into gear Off to change my ticker in the wrong direction. BTW a good point my best friend made...maybe I needed this weight gain to realize how much I do need the Lapband...talking about seeing the glass half full.
