    Weight Gain

I gained 1.5 lbs today. I know I'm not supposed to weigh every day, I waited a few days and weighed today. I'm 3 weeks post op. Anyone else in this boat?
  2. Introversion

Bmi of 34 how to proceed?

Prior to weight loss surgery, weight gain was easy for me. I could gain 7 to 8 pounds monthly with virtually no effort. You would only need to gain 5 or 6 pounds to attain the vaunted BMI of 35, so I really don't see why this is a dilemma. You'll lose the 5 pounds (plus more) during your pre-op diet. Right now, prequalification is king. Do what you've gotta do to qualify. Ethics be damned.
  3. Hi there, and congrats. The key to nutrition post any weight loss surgery is taking care of your body. The baby will take from your body what it needs. Your doctor will give you a calorie range with carbs and Protein numbers that you need to shoot for each day. If you have 35lbs to lose, you might not gain much at all until the end. Most WLS patients who get pregnant before goal typically do not gain weight, and continue to lose for the first couple of trimesters. So, don't be alarmed, and Celebrate not gaining weight in pregnancy. I'm 6 days away from delivery of our daughter. My starting pregnancy weight was 130lbs, with a normal BMI, and I've gained 35lbs which is perfectly in the normal weight gain range for my pre-pregnancy body weight. No extra Vitamins are needed. You'll just to make sure you continue with a good pre-natal, keep you B12 and folate numbers good, and do not slack on vitamins. You'll need a sublingual B12 since our bodies do not absorb b12 properly. I was prescribed to take in 1700-1800 calories per day, a minimum of 100gr of protein and a minimum of 100gr of carbs. You can not get into ketosis so no low carbing it. Ketotsis causes fetal brain damage. The recommendation for most pregnancy caloric intake is a simple addition of 200-400 calories over the normal daily intake. Water intake is vital, and I've had to really work on that one. I struggled immensely with weight gain for the first 2 trimester even though the bulk of my gain has occurred in the last trimester. It's a mind twist losing all of my weight and growing out of my clothing. I don't care what anyone says, pregnancy weight or not, it's a real fear, and it's very difficult to manage. I don't care if people say it's "baby weight, it's normal, you'll lose it" I lost 145lbs and regain is scary. I've let go of the weight gain issues because I'm just so done being pregnant at this point. VSG has not complicated my pregnancy in any form. I did not have morning sickness or any nausea. If you have lost your hunger, do not be alarmed by the insane, and absurd cravings. I had them and I gave in. Also, if you have worked out, continue to do so at a decreased level as it will help with the fatigue and other pregnancy issues. I am not an exercise person nor did I work out, so I never did it in pregnancy. And, yes you can lose weight after the baby is born. I plan on going right back to low carb as soon as I deliver to drop the weight as fast as possible. I lose exceptionally fast when I low carb so that's the plan. I have gained mostly in my abdomen, and my hips are a bit bigger. I still wear a size 6/8 in maternity pants, small and medium tops, and wore my own tank tops through the entire pregnancy. I really am all belly. I've updated throughout my entire pregnancy in the pregnancy after VSG and in the success stories forums if you'd like to peruse those topics where I have shared the good, bad and ugly. Best wishes!
  4. So obviously I have a bad back. Ive been out of work for 3 plus years because of it. I am/was a flooring contractor and because of all the heavy lifting and tearing up of old floors etc. it took a toll on my back. Not to mention as I got older the weight just packed on and as my back slowed me down the weight gain sped up. Along with a bad back and hopefully because of my weight I suffer from sciatica on both legs from hip to knees. I have newly acquired pain ( last year or so) in my hips knees and ankles. I can't walk more than a few feet without having major pain, standing up without leaning or holding the captian morgan pose is nearly impossible. I have weights and a stationary bike but have only used the bike a few times due to my knees and ankles being in pain. I have a strong feeling I could work through that pain if I could just get motivated. Regardless if you are a fellow back pain sufferer or not what can any of you recommend I do. I know there are tons of stretches for the back pain/sciatica but again lack the motivation. I know fitness plays a major roll in recovery and maintenance and I just don't want my back to hold me back. I am really hoping after surgery the pain will decrease to a point that I can at least do something. Thanx in advance for any advice!!!!
  5. Hi. I gained about 8 pounds from the time of my first MD visit to my last MD visit and Cigna approved the surgery despite my weight gain.

Is your birth control the culprit?

I've had a mirena in for over a year. I use it for heavy periods and after the first few months of spotting it's been spectacular! I'm not anemic for the first time ever. I haven't noticed any weight gain or trouble losing. Just one other perspective. I've never taken birth control pills so I wouldnt know about that.
  7. I think surgeons might not be too surprised at the weight gain over the holidays. Have you called them to ask about it? You might call and express your concern about the weight gain and ask if that's going to slow you down to surgery. Why worry about something you don't even know is an issue? Let me tell you something crazy. I went in for my pre-op appointment on Thursday and my weight was up a pound and a few ounces from my first appt in September (it was 267.4). I had to do liquids only on Sunday and when I arrive to weigh in at the hospital I weighed 254.6. WTH in four days? The only thing I can think is the liquids helped all the solids pass through my system and then the fasting the night before had me a little low on fluids. When I got home from the hospital I was 268 on my scale which is always a bit lighter than the Dr it seems. This morning I was 250 on my scale... =)
  8. I wrote this question in the veterans forum only to find I do not have enough posts to post in the Veterans Forum! So I hope a veteran can help me out here.... Ok, I get it....i think....Is regain more of a probabilty or just a possibility? I am 3 months post surgery and lurking in the Veterans Forum searching for any scrap of information and inspiration that will help me in this fight for life. (Down 40 lbs, so far) My question is this: After weight loss surgery, does 3500 calories still equal a 1-pound weight gain? Or do we gain weight more easily, like looking at a chocolate bar equals a three pound gain!? I understand salt impacts Water weight. I get that once started down the slippery slope of one bad choice, it is tough to stop. But scientifically (?), why do we put on weight so easily? Am I doomed to some sort of a new physical curse whereby 500 extra calories equals a pound gained?

    Officially Post-Op now

It's great to hear your doing good! From what I heard the weight gain after surgery is usually due to all the fluids they give you. Please Continue to keep us posted...you are the losers bench now:-)

    Anyone using Mirena IUD?

Globe, most insurance will cover Mirena. I have Tricare Prime Overseas and they did it with no problem. Tricare is usually behind the rest of the insurance plans as far as coverage. The way Mirena works is still really unknown. It does release birth control (levonorgestrel, as a previous poster mentioned) which is used in birth control pills. The device itself is supposed to also thin the uterine lining, making implantation much more difficult. If you remove the device to conceive, most doctors will tell you to wait for two cycles before trying again, because the uterine lining might be too thin to sustain a pregnancy. The questionable aspect for many people is that nobody is really sure if Mirena stops sperm from reaching the egg or if it simply prevents a fertilized egg from implanting. What a lot of people don't understand is that most women wouldn't conceive every month anyway - or even every year. So assuming that each month an egg is released and then fertilized, resulting in a spontaneous abortion is a bit much. It can happen, though, so for that reason many Catholics and other religious groups are completely against the use of the device, even more so than other forms of contraception. In my case, I opted for Mirena solely for control of my endometriosis. In that respect, it's the ideal treatment. My husband has infertility, and even if he didn't, I have no religious beliefs that would cause me to question the use of the IUD. The only side effect I could possibly say that I experienced *might* be a slower weight loss. But I can't be sure. I'm still losing, and still at a very good rate, so it might just be a natural slowdown as I get closer to goal. I have had none of the awful side effects I had with pills in the past - acne, moodiness, depression, weight gain and constant cravings for junk food - so for me, it's a great option. Another choice, if your insurance covers it, is the Nuva ring. Again, some people love it and some people hate it. I loved it, again, for endometriosis control (I left it in an entire month and went right to the next ring with no break). It simply isn't available in remote overseas locations, however, so I had to go with a different option. Best of luck to you. But check with your insurance, Globetrotter. I'd be willing to be they cover it already. ~Cheri
  11. Oops sorry above. That was eat right. However I have not read any research on stress and weight gain other than stress causing overeating. There may be some data out there. I empathize with you believe me! Wow a Lot of typos in previous message accidentally sent before checked it. Hope its decipherable!

    Pouch

I asked my nutricianist that question and she said that the cause of weight gain after surgery was grazing.
  13. James Marusek

    Struggle

From what you said this is emotional eating. So you may want to lower your stress levels or obtain some professional help to achieve this goal. Some people opt to weight themselves daily and the ups and downs can weight heavily on stress levels. So if you do this, it might be better to weight yourself once per week or once per month. You have lost 110 pounds so far and that is a good thing. Generally advice is to eat Protein first in your meals. Snack on protein or fats and minimize carbs Snacks. You may be nearing the maintenance stage and in that phase it is important to maintain your weight loss and not gain some of it back. A few months back I asked my nutritionist "Why do some people lose significant weight after surgery to gain some of it back?" She said it was due to grazing. So it is important to keep your grazing (snacking) in check. When I reached the maintenance stage, I reasoned that I needed to be happy with my meals in order to achieve long lasting effects. So I experimented a lot. I weighed myself daily and gave myself some freedom both in meals and snack. If I noticed any weight gain, I pulled myself back and fine tweaked my eating habits in order to remain stable.
  14. Hi all, I am a 30 year old male. I previously had a gastric sleeve surgery 5 years agobut due to the massive regain of weight, I had a revision gastric bypass in February 2019. Anyways, since my lowest recorded weight and initial weight loss success in June 2019, I have since gained 7kg to date and feel like I gaining 1-2kg a week. Specifically, I have regained 6 kg since early Dec 2019 to date. Over the past 3 weeks, I have regained at least a 1kg a week. I feel like I can eat just as much, if not more, then my first gastric sleeve surgery 5 years ago. I know that the bypass is a tool only, but I am shocked in the amount I can eat and want to eat. I can easily eat a plate of pasta or a whole wrap with chips from KFC (I know I should be eating healthy and not these type of foods, but it is easier said than done!). On a normal day, I drink at least 5 cans of sugar free coke zero and at least a box of paddlepop icecream. I'm super addicted to sweet and sugary food and I know this is the issue. My issue is I pretty much have to eat sweet sugary food. Luckily and thankfully, I am not diabetic (not that I know of anyways!) I've read stories of people who were much bigger than me who initially had the surgery who now eat a few bites and get full and they don't really ever feel like icecream and other sugary food. Yet I am always hungry and even after I eat food, I still crave sugary food. My old workmate who had the gastric sleeve never used to eat! They were never hungry or craved anything, yet I am completely the opposite. Anyways, my question is can anyone on here following their gastric bypass surgery still eat a plate of food or even close to? I just can't comprehend how following 2 surgeries without any complications (thankfully ) I still am able to eat so much food. Look forward to hearing from anyone.
  15. The key to your success and happiness is very simple....throw your scale away and dont compare yourself to others. If you are following your doctor's plan and your hypothyroidism is being addressed, then sit back and relax. Stress= cortisol = weight gain.
  16. I had surgery 12/17. The next day I was up 2 lb's. I am faithfully following the liquid diet. Finally today I have lost 5lb's, including the 2 I gained. Can someone tell me why I gained initially? How long before I start losing?

    Carb Amount?

The only thing I count is protein. Although, when I look at a label I will look to see if there are a lot of carbs because I definitely found correlation between carbs and weight gain. Don't forget to pay attention to the carb calories that you drink. Good luck!
  18. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband, I know that you posted the other day that you guys were having troubles and it really seems like he's solidified himself as a jerk. But you are eventually gonna move on and when you do you're gonna be healthier and happier. At least you are learning his true colors now while your'e young, rather than even more years down the road. From what I've read it does sound like stress can be related to weight gain, just hormone wise: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=53304 Your body is probably also in freaking out starvation mode. Not eating makes your body wanna retain everything. Even though you don't wanna you really need to make sure you're keeping up on your intake. I have had such a crazy hormone ride since this surgery. I had my period twice the first month and spotting at least a day both of weeks I didn't have my period. So what you're having is normal, and should stop eventually. I'm sure it's not helping much with the mood either. Do you have close family members/friends that can help support you in his absence? ((((HUGS)))))

    hopefull

So after three months of Phentermine and increased side affects with weight gain my PCP has now referred me to the surgeon for WLS. I called my insurance and with regards to the usual 6 month pre-diet, I have already done three months with my PCP no results, the insurance said that the surgeon can put in pre-authorization with his request to bypass the 6 month pre-diet. I really have no idea what will happen since I have not even seen the surgeon yet, but I hope that I can get banded shortly after the first of the year or better yet right before the first of the year. My question to all is how long did it take from date with surgeon till the date of surgery?
  20. I don't know about stretching your sleeve but I will say the few times I have tried carbonated drinks (champagne) since surgery I can't take more than a few sips before it gets really uncomfortable, verging on pain. So it's a no-go for me. Soda of any kind is not tempting for me because generally it's just too much crap, either artificial crap (sweeteners, colors, flavors) or too much sugar. Plus that painful carbonation. I have totally given up soda and do not miss it a bit. Also, keep in mind that soda (especially diet soda) is associated with weight gain. No thank you.
  21. So today have been so much better then the past few days I had surgery wed July 8 I went from sleeve to bypass... they took out a lot of scar tissue also... so I been in crazy pain I was sick yesterday I been having a lot of cramping worse then my period cramps. I feel like I want to eat.. it's hard bc I was just eating food now to starting all over again... don't get me wrong I'm glad I got another chance to lose the rest of my weight and the weight gain back.. what All did everyone do on their liquid diet I got 2 weeks.i have lost 5pounds tho yay... but I just feel like I'm overwhelm with everything.. I still can't tell the difference yet between the two I guess bc I'm sure swollen. .. so how do I tell the difference or will it be when i eat?
  22. What source did you use that said weight gain is a side effect of Zoloft? I've been on Zoloft for years before surgery and have continued since surgery one year ago, and have not noticed weight gain because of it. This screenshot actually mentions weight *loss* as a possible side effect. Source: https://www.rxlist.com/zoloft-side-effects-drug-center.htm

    Weight Loss after Surgery

A low weight is worrisome as you may have limited physiologic reserves. Should a patient with a BMI less than 22 or 23 after weight loss surgery become ill, they may lose additional weight and have a difficult time recovering. If your weight is very low and even if you feel good, you should still be seen by your surgeon for lab testing and counseling on how to maintain or increase your weight to a safer, healthier weight. Usually, a year or two of being very thin is followed by a 10 pound weight gain that gets most patients into a perfect goal range.

    Greetings

Hi there, my name is Jenn. I've always had a problem with my weight. I have only been small for very short periods of time, and never skinny. My family is riddled with diabetes and strokes. I desided to face the fact that diets really do fail over 90% of the time and they hadn't been the solution for me. I was banded in June. So far I've lost about 20lbs and have adjusted my diet many times. Even if this is all I ever lose, I have no regrets. It stopped a steady weight gain. Diets have never worked for me. I'm also a diabetic PCOS'er. So weightloss is slow, but I expected that. I am a semi-low carb eater and always looking for new recipes. I'll be posting here as much as possible to workout diet kinks. Also to get and give support. Take Care, Jenn
  25. Help one year since surgery. Up until a few weeks ago maintaining all the weight I lost at goal 75 pounds down. Now the hunger has come back to a degree and I put on four pounds in the last week. Am so upset. I know I am eating to many snacks. Also has anyone been diabetic free for more than five years. I have been off of medication for it since the day after surgery. But heard for some reason it usually returns after five years. Also anyone have any recommendations for skin wrinkles? Bad on face especially neck. Sorry for so many questions but just found this site. Thank you and suggestions for any of the above would be appreciated.
