    September surgery buddies!!

Have you tried any of the bone broth? I have ordered fire and kettle in chicken and beef flavor but I haven't tried it yet. It was recomended to me by my dietition. If you are comfortable sharing I would love to hear what types of weekly goals you set yourself. I think it would make the time go faster if I broke it up into weeks so I think that you have a wonderful idea there. Your surgery is just 1 day after mine it seems, so we have the same amount of time to fill The bottles are a great idea. I did buy some ice cube trays because I didn't actually have any and I read that they hold about 2 oz each cube. Just in hopes of not wasting too much food after the surgery. I am glad to hear chobani is good. I haven't tried it yet but it was the only sugar free brand I saw available. With this heat, popsicles will be a nice treat

    July 2022 peeps!

Sounds like you are doing great. Funny you mentioned your trip. I was just asking about eating on a 1,000 mile trip (Louisiana to Iowa) and got some good tips. In case you hadn't seen it, Eating/Drinking on a Road Trip: 4-5 Weeks Post-Op. Enjoy your trip!

    One Week Until Surgery

Yes! I've had so many feelings dredged up this last week. Good luck and I'll be sending you good thoughts on 8/8!

    WLS and wisdom teeth surgery

I would play it safe and space them 6 weeks apart since both involve Anesthesia and you really don't want to play around with it. Talk to both providers and see what they say.
  5. I am in my 8th week and Tuna Salad is a lifesaver. Easy to make, full of protein and has flavor! Also very easy to just put extra mayo to make it more... liquidy? I would try the new stuff before you leave that way you know what you can tolerate. At Taco Bell I get a chicken soft Taco with Pico and no Lettuce and don't eat the tortilla. It's filling, has FLAVOR (I've missed flavor! ) and good source of protein. When I went on a road trip I survived on scrambled eggs and protein Shakes. I would definitely try the new things before you leave.

    Monthly weigh in and measurements

that's pretty average. That's about what I lost, and we started out around the same weight. I don't know of too many people who've lost more than that at that juncture - a few lucky ones, and those who started out MUCH heavier than us. But otherwise, no. That's a pretty normal loss for three months out.
  7. So pre-surgery I was wearing 3-4XL T- shirts at work. Part of pre-planning this year we were given 2 school T-shirts and I got AND FIT the XL! Total shocker-i knew when I picked XL I might still have some weight to lose but nope! It fit nicely! I'm 8 1/2 weeks out and ounces away from 60lbs and I fit an XL!!! So tickled!

    July 2022 peeps!

I had my two week Post Op appointment this morning. I am right where I am supposed to be. I've lost 18 lbs since Pre-Op diet, wounds are healing nicely and I have advanced to pureed food! I put Amy's Organic Black Bean and Vegetable soup in a Magic Blender and had about 1/3 of it. Delicious after the liquid diet. My husband and I are leaving first thing in the morning to drive from CA to NY (a family cottage)...three days. We used to stop at fast food places but now it will be rest stops since I am bringing my own food...greek yogurt, cottage cheese, shakes and the leftover bean soup. Even my husband is bringing his own food. Since I have not told anyone about my surgery, it was my plan to have the surgery, get clearance to go to NY and by the time I return I will be on regular food (just smaller portions). It will be easier in those social situations back in CA. I am glad everyone is doing well.

    July 2022 peeps!

I’m having my One week post op visit today. Everything has been going great I only have a strange feeling when swallowing and it is tough to get all the fluids in I’m only getting 40-50oz a day and I get tired easily but I get to go to full liquids today. I’m down 60lbs since my first visit in April 5 and 11 of those pounds have been since surgery.

My 2 week pre-op diet was 3-4 shakes a day with no more than 200 calories each and minimum 15g of protein, celery and cucumbers, and 1-2 cups of chicken or beef broth a day. Absolutely NO popsicles or sugar free jello. I would constantly be shaving celery with a peeler into “noodles” and then adding it to the broth for a soup of sorts. AND I was super lucky enough to do it twice in an 8 month period. 😂 (needed a hernia repair surgery that was coupled with a VSG to RNY revision to reduce chances of future hernias.)

    August surgery buddies!

Hi everyone! I started my preop liquid diet today. I have a two week one. I’m hoping I make it… we are on vacation with friends this week so it’s hard.

Looks like you have been doing well!! Thats Awesome..... As for myself I still have the mobility issue because I have no ACL in my knee and need a knee replacement done. I had a 5 week stall!!! That sucked big time and talk about being discouraged oh my!! That being said I did start losing again but only a few pounds here and there. I think on an average I may lose 2-3 lbs per week and about 10-12 lbs per month. I go for a weigh in tomorrow. I think I lost about 11 lbs since last month. Not the big lbs that alot of ppl seem to drop but Ill take what I get I guess. Its better than gaining LOL. Keep up the good work and I am sure you will hit your goal in no time!!!

    Food question

I don't know exactly when but I know for a fact it was after 6 weeks. At 6 weeks is when I was easing back into a normal diet. I made nachos with them, ground taco meat, cheese and hot sauce. I ate 3 and was full. haha PS: I don't like them. The after taste is weird. Popcorners flex protein chips are way better. (IMO) I never really cooked with butter and oil. I might buy butter once a year and have had the same bottle of olive oil forever. Like a few years. I think I used butter/oil for the first time after 6 weeks too, just because that was when I started cooking "normal" foods again.

    July 2022 peeps!

Congratulations @KevinS62 on your theee weeks! Same for me. I did get on the scale for the first time yesterday and I’ve lost 15lbs which I am very happy with. 25 to goal. Clothes are fitting better and I have a lot of energy for the first time this week. Biggest challenge is not eating because boredom. I’ve been able to tolerate everything I have tried, in much smaller portions of course. I am about to go to “regular food” this weekend. Not being hungry is an interesting feeling, I’ll try to make the most of it while I can. Im heading home to the UK for a trip next weekend and very excited to see my family. hope everyone else is doing well!
  15. @kcuster83 Thanks for your tips. Yeah, as I said, my diet plan is exageratingly conservative. It has no puree stage and very slowly introduces soft foods and meats (they say chew, chew, chew). It's probably a week or three behind others and I'm not skeert to reach into the week 6-7 menu for an item or two to try in weeks 5-6. In moderation, of course. I have learned NOT to ask the dietician anything. I won't like her answer. She goes strictly by the written guide. When I was able to speak to the surgeon, he was more open and basically said the menu was conservative to work for all patients and I could try something off plan, but to stop if it doesn't work. I'm not a huge egg salad person but I may try a light tuna or chicken salad. Taco Bell beans is a great idea.
  16. Hmmmm, brain storm time. No meat for 6 weeks? Never heard that one before. Whew. Snacks: Yogurts, cheeses, hard boil eggs? That's about the only thing I can think of that would travel. You could order soups and not eat certain things depending on what is in the soup? Charcuterie appetizer and your family could eat the things that you can't? Egg salad, don't eat the bread? Or get crackers if you are allowed. I ate taco bell refried beans and black beans a few times. That's about all I can think of, I was allowed meat at the pureed stage (pureed obviously). It is also so close to allowing the meat, maybe reach out to your team and see if you could try softer meats a few days early? That would REALLY open up your options. PS: I don't care for the quest chips but a lot of people do so I hope you are one of them who like them after taking that plunge. I like the popcorners flex protein chips the best. Good luck and safe travels!

    7 months after ESG

Why on earth would you have to be on a liquid diet for 4 weeks? I was on a clear liquid for a few days, then full liquid until two weeks out, and I found that to be torture! Congrats on sticking to it!
  18. Hey all, I'm sure this has been asked a bazillion times, but the wife, adult son and I are leaving next week for a vacation/family visit. The road trip is 1,000 miles. I feel great right now and we take turns driving, so that's not the issue. We make this trip annually and will likely have 2-3 fuel stops and will stop another couple times to eat. When we leave, I'll be four weeks post-op, so I'm looking at my week 5 and 6 menu items, and I am asking for your tips and tricks when going on a long trip Drinks: I will bring coffee, water and pre-mixed protein shakes for fluids. Maybe a Gatorade Zero for a change in pace. Snacks: What snacks are suggested? According to my nutrition plan, about the only things I could have thru week 4 are the protein drinks, string cheese and some peeled fruit. I'll be right at the start of Week 5 which mentions up to 3 Multi-grain crackers a day, but I ordered some of the Quest Protein Chips. (I purchase $95 worth, so hope they are good). 😋 Restaurants: This is probably where I'm looking for the most tips and tricks most. What restaurants have good menu items to choose from and food items should I be looking for? For example, a Big Mac, minus the bun, (which does not sound good right now), LOL. *Full disclosure, my nutrition plan really does not mention meat or salads until week 6 when I can have tuna and baked fish and then add baked chicken, lean ground beef, ground turkey and salads. But, I'm not against trying some of this (in moderation of course), if other plans allow these items sooner. I realize my nutrition plan is exageratingly conservative.

That will be me for my two week pre-op surgery liquid diet. Absolutely NO solids drinking 4 shakes a day! I just bought an 18 case box of premier protein and found out there's a recall on them!

    July 2022 peeps!

She has not mentioned it to me in my two appointments with her and it's not even talked about in my menu/nutrition plan. In a FAQ she sent me last week, it says calories needed depend on gender, age and activity level, but a general rule of thumb is around 1,000 calories a day. The FAQ does not say when to start the "1,000 per day" thing, but I find it somewhat difficult during the liquid phase and I plan to build up to it as I increase my activity level. In the meantime, I'm concentrating on the 90g protein and 64oz fluid/water.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi, kevin! Did your dietitian set the calorie range? Mine won't. She told me to work on getting 60-90 g of protein. I'm averaging about 700 cal a day. Losing about 1-2 lbs a week. I did lose 10 lbs the first 10 days. Have lost 18 lbs since I started liquid diet 6 weeks ago. Made my first goal of 225 already. I was 252 on my first appointment last June.

    Monthly weigh in and measurements

My surgeon gave me a graph based on my height and surgery weight. Showing how I should drop weight through the first year (based on national averages). It has me at 20lbs for the first 3 months, then around 15 lbs until 7 months and then it hangs out around 10 lbs a month for the rest of the year. At 3 months it has me at -64.1 lbs, at my 3 month follow up I was -77 lbs! Everyone is different. I have really good weeks and very low weeks. But I only weigh on Mondays which was my surgery day. I like the graph just to give me an idea. I also use it as personal "challenge" to stay ahead of my graph even if just by 1 lb. Keeps me focused!

    August Surgery Buddies!

My surgery was scheduled for Aug. 1. The morning before they called to cancel because the surgeon was not available to operate (it sounded like they got sick). It was devastating after waiting so long and going though a two week liquid diet. They called on Aug. 3 to reschedule for Sept. 20. I’m excited to have a date again, but I’m not looking forward to redoing the prep and waiting so long. I guess I’m a Sept. Buddy now. Wishing all of you Aug Buddies the best on your surgery day!
  24. I hope I am replying correctly... Thank you and congratulations on your weight loss!! That is a huge accomplishment! Good luck on your skin surgery. My primary doctor referred me to positive change classes and I took the nutrition class about 3 years ago. After that and during covid I gained soooo much weight and she (primary) recommended the surgery. I took classes online and then did my blood tests and that was it. Then I had a hospital stay (unrelated to weight) March, 2021 so I had to wait on my surgery. Fast forward to April of 2022 and my doctor said I should be ok to have weight loss surgery. I contacted Positive Change and they did not require me to retake classes and reordered my blood tests, I had a psy evaluation, and did not pass the first because I had not lost any weight (I actually gained) and he didnt think I put in the work. I had another appointment with him about 6 weeks later (mid July) and had lost weight so he approved me. I just had a phone consultation with a surgeon and he approved me for the sleeve on the condition that my specialist says its OK. He said the sleeve is better for me due to the medications I have to take. Since I went through my classes a long time ago, I watched tons of videos on youtube from other surgical hospitals etc. A lot of places seem like they are really connected to their patients and give them so much support. For me, I feel like I am on an island. I haven't talked to a nutritionist, or anyone else walking me through this process. Most of my info this time around is via youtube; and I just found this place last night. What I am most worried about is drinking water. I get migraines if I get slightly dehydrated. I have been working out to lose weight and noticed how much I drink. I am trying to sip water throughout the day but I am failing at keeping myself hydrated and have had a migraine almost every day. How do you do it? Set alarms? How do you go through your day sipping so much water? How do you work like that? I also saw that you cannot eat gummy vitamins is that true? I cannot find that in the positive change book, maybe I missed it. Thank you for your support and all the help!

    WLS and wisdom teeth surgery

You might want to discuss your plans with both providers? It's not uncommon for doctors to want 6 weeks or more between surgical procedures (yes, having your wisdom teeth removed is considered a surgical procedure). Better to know now, than to find out when you go in to have the work done! Your WLS may or may not be okay with this timing as well, so it's better to check.
