    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

I am so freaked out right now in regards to this thread. In January of 2007 I was at a funeral of a really close friend and suddenly came down with the most painful headache I ever felt in my life. The headache went on non stop for another week until I finally went to the doctor and they attributed it to sinuses. The day after I went to the doctor I started having double vision and the right side of my face started to slope and my eye pretty much parked in the corner and shut half way. I went to the ER and they thought it was Bell's Palsey (which I had twice in the past) and were going to start treatment for it, but the he called Nurology and they wouldnt let me leave til he saw me. When he saw me he decided to admit me into the hospital. I was in the hospital for over a week until they came up with a disease called Tolosa Hunt Syndrome. They started me on 100 mg of steroids which immediatly opened my eye and brought it back to the normal position. Each time the Nurologist tried to wean me off the steroids my eye would start messing up again. He had me see an Opto/Nerologist and he was the one that said I had a Pseudo tumor where the orbits span out. He started me on a pill form of Chemo which is called Methotrexate and eased me off the steroids which caused me to get all the way up to 316lbs. I have been on the Methotrexate for over two years now and have no further problems with my eye. I notice what causes it to start acting up a little is when my stress volume increases or when I cry. I just thought I was alone and did not know anyone else or a support group of anyone who had it. I would love to talk more with those who have it just to get a better understanding of it.
  2. I had my Sleeve done on 3/16/2011 in 5 days I will be 12 weeks out. My weight came down nicely and fast! Yay! So now the issue becomes IM STUCK between 231 (morning) and 234 (by night). My Boyfriend brought a scale in the house and I cant keep off of it. I have weighed myself everyday morning noon and night from mid May till now and I am just not loosing as fast as I was. Is my body platouing?? I have started excersize Water aerobics, just started eating wheat bread again, and eating meat for Protein intake. I just cant digest Protein shakes so I dont drink them, I do drink 100% Cranberry juice all day, water make me hungry...What am I doing wrong? Am I being impatient?? Am I on the right track...Help

    Lost 37lbs and STUCK!

I'd start tracking all your calories and fat and protein on a site like sparkpeople. You may find that you aren't getting enough protein. Also, click on my ticker and you'll see my weight loss pattern. It's very stairstep-I'll be the same weight for a week or two then drop 4-5 lbs in a couple days!
  4. Would this be possible - to get the lapband and try to lose the majority of your weight with this and then do a "maintenance" period by introducing regular food? I did Medifast before and lost 13 lbs in one week by sheer willpower, surely the band would help even more? (Of course this was last year and I've since gained it back and then some). I don't particulary view myself as a sensitive/queasy type person, but I was just reading the thread about food sitting in the smaller pouch waiting to go into the stoma and then something about saliva being so gross when something won't go down and I literally gagged at my computer after trying to picture it. Needless to say I backed out of those threads and am not going to open up anything else like that for a day or two. So, I'm thinking if I gag like that just reading about other people's experience and I don't even have a lapband, what is trying to eat real food going to be like if/when I actually have the lapband? Thanks for any advice!
  5. I am 3.5 weeks post op and my birthday was July 3rd. My family and friends all joined me at the drive-in movie theater that night. People brought their own food, and I happily watched Terminator and San Andreas with my turkey and cheese roll ups. Everyone had a great time.

  7. Hi Melissa. I'm pretty new here too and not banded yet. I went to my first seminar a couple of weeks ago and got my first consultation with the surgeon coming up...well, not until November, but that's okay. I'm spending my waiting time doing a lot of reading and learning about the process. Good luck and welcome!

    Any tips would be great

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I work with 40 woman and I knew lying would come back on me. I tried for a while but I mean it all came out... I never miss two weeks of work so it was obvious that something was going on. I wanted it be not be on the gossip mill to long so I was pretty upfront to keep from the whispers as I hid an obvious change. Close friends know.. Facebook friends don't. But it's the parents of the kids I teach that are who I am concerned with. I am a professional yet still strive to be warm and approachable. I like the easy answers you gave and that might help me in the future.

motivation ... I need to be able to zip this dress up in 5 weeks!!!
  10. Cross your fingers ladies, and hope you have an easy recovery! I was able to reach my Protein and Water goals by day 3... then each day after was just way better. I was back to work in one week. I had some lingering soreness and tiredness, but otherwise felt great. It is hard to predict how anyone will recover... I figured I would bounce back fast because I have after other surgeries.
  11. I am wondering the same thing. My surgery is June 8 and my son is graduating university on June 15th. My problem is that the ceremony is 2 hours away and my son needs to be there 2 hours before it starts. The ceremony is for several programs and could last 3-4 hours. That could mean it will be a 10 hour day away from home one week after surgery. My surgery was booked for several months before we knew the graduation date and cannot be changed now as it took a lot of planning to get time off work.

Is it bad to feel full?

Your feelings of "full" won't be normal for some time, so stop if you think you are. You can always sip some more later to make up calories or hit Protein goals, but it's better to go a bit less each meal (and just have several small meals) than too much. The concept of a normal "full" you are thinking about may also be something you'll need to figure out once you're eating regular foods again. Most of us that gained enough weight to be considered obese have very flawed perception of fullness. I used to eat to the point of feeling sick sometimes. Portion control was a foreign concept, and even now, I have to remind myself I can always eat more later if I am genuinely hungry, but the food won't disappear forever and I can have whatever I'm eating any time. And once you are on solids (especially hitting your protein goals and eating healthy veggies and complex carbs in moderation), your energy level will start coming back. I feel pretty darned great and have a high energy level now. It just keeps getting better every week, so just keep plugging away at the basics (protein/water/moderate activity whenever possible) and you'll be fine. Good luck!
  13. I am so sorry you are having a rough time. Yes I definitely did and I was already on an anti-depressant. I had to get the dose increased. This is an especially hard time for a lot of people - both the Holidays AND post-op. I found out I am getting laid off next week on the 31st, and not drinking or being able to run towards my addiction has been really tough, so I completely get where you are coming from. (Additionally, my father and my brother do not speak, so I have to do those Christmas' separately which is never fun so I really really get where you are coming from with family drama.) I wish I had some brilliant words to tell you to make it better, but I don't. I have been seeing my therapist consistently from 4 months pre-op to now (6 1/2 months post-op) and I plan to continue for at least 2 years. It really helps. I do strongly recommend reaching out to a counselor. She (my therapist) and what she has taught me has been the biggest / best part of my journey. I wouldn't have survived without her help. And as I sit here pouting that I lost my cushy job, I love that even though I am tempted by some of the food and drinks, I have been able to (mostly) steer clear and just stay focused on my health. I have actually outloud yelled at myself to put that food down! I did not say all that to overshadow or demean your feelings. I just was trying to commiserate and not sure I expressed it very well. I am truly sorry you are having a rough time! Feel free to send me a private message if you need someone reach out to. I am not always the best at giving the right answer, but I promise I will do my best and will always respond. HUGS!!!

    Almost 6 years...

I am a little over 2 years out. I have struggled this past year and have gained 14 pounds. I came back to this forum for help as I so depended on it my first year. I read that so many of us have gained some and struggled with the lifestyle changes we have to make to stay healthy. I saw that many have gotten back on track by using the 5 day pouch test. I looked it up online and read it for about a week before I convinced myself to give it a shot. It really has helped. I have lost 5 pounds and feel much more satisfied with healthy food choices. Of course, I've cut my calories by 300-500 per day, log all my food on "Lose it", Zumba three times a week, and drink more than 64 oz of water a day. I also walk half a hour daily. Your biggest hurdle was admitting you had to get back on track and you've done that. You're back on this forum for support. Know that we are all here for you. You got this! Good luck and check in often to let us know how you're doing.

    Been awhile

I know it's been awhile, and I am ashamed that I haven't gotten farther than I have. I switched Doctor's to one that will be more aggressive about getting my thyroid under control, but other than that I haven't done much! I started my spring semester this week :nervous the semester is 6 weeks, and there is just so much to do, I dont think college will ever be normal, its always going to overwhelm me!!! But its no excuse I need to get going with my surgery.

    Disappointed

March 10th will be 2 months for me and I've already experienced 3 pretty significant stalls. I don't recommend this but I can tell you what worked for me. I actually ate MORE and within a day or so, the scale started to move again. I didn't eat unhealthy foods because that would be defeating in the purpose but I ate MORE Protein and lean meat, a little bit more salad, Beans, etc and it has gotten me out of my stalls every time. I got the idea from another post on here where she said during stalls she would eat 5 meals a day instead of 3. I don't know why it works, but apparently there's something to it. Once I'm past the stall, I go back to eating normally.

    Disappointed

It has happened to me as well - stalled for about 2 weeks and I am almost 3 months out. It is very discouraging, but it starts back again. I was even still exercising. Have lost 55 since surgery 9 December and a total of 78 from preop. Hang in there!
  18. Hi guys, I've been having a daily meltdown since weeks. I had my surgery on March 18 at 86kgs and since have only lost 12kgs. I hear people who have had the same surgery talk about losing 50 pounds in the same time period but not me. Since July 13, I've lost maybe 2 pounds, not even a kg. They say it is because I started at a lower weight but I don't know if that's an actual thing. I have average 900 calories per day. I have about 55-60gms of Protein without any shake. I also snack but never more than a few pieces of whatever - crisps, small biscuits etc. I maintain three meals of which at least two are healthy. Since August been doing power yoga one a week and Zumba thrice a week. What should I do? How am I failing myself? Would love your help please!
  19. Hi, I am using My Fitness Pal since June, and to first answer Bob2013's question, I log each and everything into it. And because a lot of the foods I eat are homecooked, I know for a fact that there isn't half as much fat in the ones I cook than the option I am forced to chose from My Fitness Pal's food lists. So it might be overestimating the fat but then also the meat because I know I don't eat as much meat as those dishes might offer. I am very honest with the food diary. Everything goes in there. No point in cheating : ) at this point right? Also, Lisa, I according to the app, I am eating perhaps roughly about 150gms of sugar per WEEK. Is that too much? Maybe I should cut down on sugar? It says I have roughly 23% Protein in a week of all groups , thats 405 gms of protein. 276gms of fat, and 719 gms of carbs. (this is a sample week out of a few). 74kgs is 162.8lbs/pounds. My nutritionist is never very bothered about my calorie intake in total, just what is going inside me, so I don't know my intake. My Fitness Pal says its about 1,200 but it doesn't factor surgery into it! What do you guys think? What should I change? Am I failing?

    Consult today

Oh, I forgot to mention that when I asked him about the pre-op diet, he said that he doesn't do the liquid Protein diet, but a solids protein diet, like Atkins. He said that the key is low carbs, high protein, to reduce the fat around the liver to make it easier to do the surgery. That should definitely help in keeping up the energy levels and the general blah-ness away. He also is pretty aggressive with the fills, meaning he doesn't have set times between fills, but instead goes by your hunger level. Assuming I can get in to the psychologist within the next few weeks, I'm hoping for a surgery date in December. Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well.

    STALL ?

Thanks I think I am in a stall weight day of surgery 238 weight on weigh in day last Monday 225. Trying not to be frustrated.
  22. My doctor cleared me at my one week post op visit -- I was allowed to do water aerobics and walking. Within a month I was able to add recumbant bicycling and circuit training and haven't stopped since. Good luck! Linda
  23. Lannie

I think I overdid it today?

Were you just walking? No lifting, twisting, etc. If you were just walking it is probably OK. If you have a fever or it doesn't subside in a reasonable amount of time, call you doctor. I was cleared to swim at 3 weeks. The first time back I felt great but ached on the left side for several hours afterward. My doctor told me before that I may experience "popping" or "stretching" but that was normal so not to panic.

    Scared...advice please..Washington State

I had gastric bypass on June 7 and I did have a complication. A stricture developed below the pouch that required a 2nd surgery. I'm now 5 weeks out and have lost 30 pounds. It wasn't ideal to have the stricture and 2nd surgery - however, it was all over in a few days. The benefits of the surgery are forever. I was nervous before surgery as well - it's a big step to change how we eat for the rest of our lives. In my case, it was a necessary change that I could not effect on my own. I had tried for 45 years. Can you think of a better solution to your problem?
  25. Hi everyone Its my first post and would like to let everyone know how appreciative I am that this community is out there. Im writing also because I'm conflicted on which surgery is best for me and I know its ultimately my surgeon and my decision but still very scared. Just a little history of me I'm a working mom of almost 3 year old twins, I work at a fast pace medical office so Im pretty much on my feet 8-12 hours a day. I've been overweight all my life but since my pregnancy I have not been able to loose weight and have high blood pressure with high cholesterol levels. My father had passed away from a massive heart attack at 43 yrs old and I just turned 40. My BMI is between 36-37. My first initial visit 6 months ago was to get gastric sleeve but since I've been feeling in my heart I want bypass. On my endoscopy it shown some inflammation due to acid reflux and I've suffered most of my pregnancy with it and definitely do not want GERD. I know theres more vitamin deficiencies and more complications but I feel like theres more long term benefits with bypass. Again I really can't thank you all Ive been reading most of your posts and I feel so much more informed then I was when I started this journey. BTW my pre-op appointment with my surgeon is this week and Im a ball of nerves
