Lapband to VSG now to RNY

Yea my insurance specifically excludes bariatric surgery and any complications that it may arise including needing revision or whatever. It sucks.
  2. I think all of us lap band "failures" (for lack of a better word) have the same fear. After we have the band removed will we gain back the weight and then some and be completely miserable? I loved my band until it gave me trouble. I suffer from terrible reflux, heartburn, waking up coughing, sick all the time. I have gained back most of my weight since I've had all my Fluid removed from it. I have tried to discipline myself by dieting and portion control to no avail. Today, I meet with the doctor to set up a date for removal and hernia repair. The question is, do I give it a go on my own or do I revise with a sleeve? I have read lots on this forum and the lap band forum. Everyone seems to have a strong opinion for and against the sleeve. Since I have to wait at least 6 months between having the band out and a revision, I have a lot of research and thinking to do. I will also be testing myself to see if I can go this weight loss thing with no help surgically. Very fearful since I have not been able to do this in the past
  3. OK, so i feel a little inexperienced writing this, but i have had the band and a revision in the last 2 1/2 yrs and am being sleeved in 6 days. i have done so much reading and researching for the past several weeks that it sounds like it could be a stricture. Don't want to scare you, because I really dont know, but i have read that scar tissue can form inside the sleeve and pull the stomach together forming a stricture, you should probably make an appt with your doctor and maybe get a swallow study done...good luck to you. i hope it is just something simple and will go away on its own... ~vicki

    Six Months later......94 pounds!

Thank you and no not a revision. Just the sleeve only.
  5. My revision took about 90 minutes. I was lucky and had very little scar tissue and I was surprised to find that I didn't have a hernia after throwing up every day for almost three years. My recovery has been easier than the band. I have little pain worth mentioning other than gas pain and feeling a little sore. Very happy with my decision!
  6. My surgery took about 2 hours. Band to Sleeve revision.
  7. I am having my DS surgery on Monday February 29th, 2016 ( my birthday). I decided to go with the DS because I do not want to regain the weight. Usually when other weight loss surgeries fail, the surgery is revised to a DS. I just can't imagine myself going through the process again if I regain the weight or don't lose enough weight. Thus the DS made the most sense to me. I am on day 4 of my pre-op liquid diet. It does get easier as the days pass but I really would love to eat food right now. I have so many thoughts running through my head as the day gets closer to my surgery. I look at the hundreds and hundreds of dollars in clothes that I purchased over the years that are hanging in my closet knowing that all of those clothes and shoes I won't be able to wear in the next few months. All while thinking to myself after I lose about 50 pounds I won't have anything to wear. Will I look in the mirror skinny and not recognize myself because I have been fat so long. However I look in the mirror now and wonder where I went and I don't recognize the person I became. I wonder if my relationships with friends and family will change. Every time I would go on a diet in the past and lose 30 pounds people would start telling me that I am losing to much weight. REALLY??? I am obese, how can I be losing to much weight? I feel like I will be angry inside when people start to pay attention to me because they really never pay attention to me now. It's stupid things like this that I think about.
  8. My revision from band to sleeve took 3 hrs. But I also had tons of scar tissue from the band being in for ten yrs. plus he fixed a hernia and yanked the ol gallbladder. First two days were rough. Day three was a big improvement in fact I rode seven hours home and went shopping at Walmart. Feeling much better now. Walking is the key.
  9. I agree it should be withdrawn from wide spread use. For some it's a good short term tool for weight loss, but for most there are better long term solutions. There are too many variables...surgical skill, post op food plans, interval for fills and regular check ups and patient compliance. In my case, my surgeon placed my band too high, on my esophagus, not my stomach. Now I have a severely dilated esophagus and I'm not able to revise...I'd love to sue, but they have you sign so many disclaimers...

NYC and HIP health insurance ??

I have HIP also and in May I was looking at HIP's website and under medical guidelines it said that bariatric surgery was revised on April 15, 2008, I printed this out because I was so mad. In the beginning of April I had called HIP to find out what their requirements were and I was told it had to be medically necessary. So I made all the appointments for pre-op. Then when I found out from HIP that under these new rules I needed a six month supervised diet it changed everything. Good Samaritan hospital said that if I had to do the six month diet starting from april then some of my pre-op tests would have to be repeated because they need to be current within 3 months of surgery. Now on HIP's website it is showing the old rules for bariatric surgery dated December 13, 2006. So I called HIP again and they just give me the run around and will not directly answer my question about this six month diet. Have either of you talked to HIP directly? I spoke with a nurse in the managed care department and she was very nasty and said that she could not answer anything without the surgeon filing the paperwork. I told her that I can't see the surgeon until all my clearances are done which includes the clearance from the nutritionist and if I need a six month diet the nutritionist will not clear me until after that. This entire process is so upsetting. Lisa

    I've Been Sleeved!

I called JAX and they would not consider me as a patient...they don't want revisions and 4 hours is too far away for them. Disappointing but I think I'm heading in the right direction going to Fort Gordon.

    26F in NJ

I am a 29F from NJ but my surgery is not until 3/25/16 so I am a few weeks behind you. I somewhat get where you are coming from I only have one friend I talk to (she is working towards a lap-band to sleeve revision) other than her I have not told anyone because I do not want to deal with the lack of understanding she experience with our mutual friends. . . How are you going so far? I am excited about it but nervous about silly things like losing my hair, how am I going to hide it when I go out for dinner with people or when I bring it up with a new guy I am dating. coco

    Pain After Surgery

My recovery was very smooth. I didn't bother to take any prescription pain meds because I didn't want the nausea and I was fine without them. I felt like recovery is easier for revision patients because we went thru it before

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

@@Cleo's Mom, that's exactly why I'm jumping through the hoops again for conversion to RNY instead of the sleeve. After being burned with the lap-band, I don't trust projected outcomes anymore. And I'm sure as hell not going to suffer with the band for another year or more, waiting to see if the sleeve is going to be as good as the projections predict. The lack of proven long-term stats on the sleeve, the number of people I've seen posting about getting revisions to RNY, and the fear of GERD (I lived with severe GERD for longer than I should have with my first band) has made my decision for me. I can't live with the band anymore, so I've got to do something NOW.
  15. That was my thoughts too, I removed it when I had a chance even though it had served me well for the most part. Revising to the sleeve did not work for me though and I gained a lot of weight with it. I'm now almost 3 months post MGB and down about 30 lbs, only 15 more to go !
  16. I'm also a band-to-sleeve patient. My band was working great until last December (12/14), when I got a tear in my stomach from the stitches that held my band in place. I got my band-to-sleeve revision surgery last February. So far I've only lost 5 lbs, but I really haven't been trying hard to lose weight either - I'm still eating cheeseburgers :-)

    Slip

No, there are several people here who had a slip and had all their Fluid removed and it went back to working again. Also, several have had revision surgery with success too. But, it is true that once your band slips the odds that it will return to as it was before are less. I can't say how much less? Maybe 10% or higher of revisions may not work as well as before but the odds seem to be in your favor. I can't back up any of these assertions with any studies fyi. It's going to depend on damage done by the slip, the expertise of your surgeon and the type of slip? Good luck and keep us notified how it goes? tmf

    VSG and a Hernia Repair

I just had my lapband to sleeve revision on Monday. When I had my lapband, the Dr discovered a hiatal hernia & repaired it. Never had GERD prior to that so it was a surprise. I did start taking Omeprazole daily about 2 years in to my lapband. With my revision, he repaired the hernia again & I'm starting to take Pepcid. Based on my previous experience, all should heal fine. Driving - I've always been told that as long as you are off your pain meds & you can slam on your brakes with no problem - you should be OK. Before, I've practiced slamming on the brakes which car isn't running & parked. I plan to do the same thing this weekend as I need to drive next week. Good Luck!

    discomfort in chest while drinking....

Hi Sara. I had written a 3-month update in July so I will provide the link and you can read about my experience so far. http://verticalsleevetalk.com/vertical-sleeve-gastrectomy-surgery-vsg-success-stories/7704-3-month-update.html Since I wrote that, I have lost 97 pounds and 7 sizes. I had a straight sleeve done (no revision) so the cost will probably vary. You will need to contact them for details on the cost but I hope that isn't your driving force. PSSC were excellent and treated me very well and they still do. They have a two-year program to follow your nutrition and fitness goals. My surgery was done by Dr. Peter Billing and he was wonderful .. I can't say enough about him. If you google him or Dr. Robert Landerholm (another one of the WLS surgeons), you will find a lot of positive information on both. Hope this helps and good luck in your journey.
  20. I was banded 12 years ago by dr Leung in surrey, bc. When I was banded, I was lucky to have my surgery covered by bc medical . about 6 months later, they stopped all funding. I have had three port revisions. I currently have an infected port. I called dr.leung, but his phone is not in service ...hmmm.. I was told dr. Amson assisted in my original surgery. I called his office, and they agreed to see me. Yesterday he told me my port needed to be removed ASAP and I needed to be on antibiotics and then my port replaced. He could not do it or me. He suggested dr woodhesd or another dr. I called both today, and was told they would not fix it for me, however if I wanted to pay $7000 I could wait 6 to 8 weeks and they would remove it. I suggested by that point I would be dead, but thank you for the offer of taking my money..what??? I have an oozing infection, a medical issue, that needs to be dealt with..and I am being looked at as a dollar sign. Anyway, beyond that...I need some suggestions , and I need them fast! I don't want to loose my band. I have no doctor in charge of me now, and nobody will take me....help!!!!! I need help before the infection reaches my stomach!!!! Suggestions???? Maybe I should go to Mexico???
  21. Well if your band has slipped, you need to figure out WHY it slipped. If it slipped from non-compliance and keeping it too tight and vomiting and purging, then it may not be a good idea to get a band replacement. The Sleeve has been a good viable for option for those who've had band slippage, some surgeons wait for the stomach to heal before revising to the Sleeve and some surgeons will do it all in one surgery, I guess depending on the damage and adhesion's left from your band. Also, some people have had slipped bands, learned their lessons and have gotten rebanded, and have been complication free and successful, but from what I've read getting rebanded comes with more risk and everyone is not a candidate for rebanding depending on the damage the band may have caused. Edited to add: I got rebanded last year, and had the old band removed hiatal hernia repaired and new AP band placed, however I did not have band slippage, so your case may be a bit different, I am very happy that I decided to get a new band, it's working great so far. Talk it over with your surgeon, they know more about your medical history and what may be best for you. Good luck!

Sudden onset of heartburn at 15 months?

Our stomachs do not understand that at least 80% of our stomachs were removed., and continues to make acid as if it were a whole stomach. Most sleevers are on an acid blocker. Do you have a costco there? You can get the generic of an acid blocker for pretty cheap. If you have insurance, just tell your doctor to prescribe and acid blocker. There are some sleevers who have revised to a gastric bypass because their acid problems were really bad and could not be controlled by medicine.
  23. Odds are this was due to the revision and not actual reflux. How are you doing now?

First Official Fill and not doing good!

To make a long story short 252 lbs at the time of surgery on 9/24/09. First fill scheduled for 11/17 but found that port had flipped. Revision on 1/14/10. My current weight is 218 and I had my first fill on 3/1/10. I have been on liquids since. but barely.. they tried 2cc but it was too tight and took someout so I believe that I have a bit of 1 cc.. and the liquid is so hard to go down.. I am going to try to go on mushies for dinner tonight because I am so starving!! does anyone have any suggestions? Also the protein was too dense to go down as well.
