  1. In the last few days, news revealed that the cause of death for Lisa Marie Presley was complications from bariatric surgery. No info on which procedure she had or when, but seems she developed a small bowel blockage caused from scar tissue developing and adhesions many years later. I did a search here for this particular problem and know it is a rare occurrence, but I can't help but think she probably had the best of doctors and well... how does one recognize if they have a blockage or adhesion before it's too late? Doctors reveal how bowel obstruction behind Lisa Marie Presley's death can occur (msn.com)

    Food Aversions After Surgery

You're crazy, lol. But seriously, though. Too much protein will put a strain on you liver, gall bladder, and kidneys. According to what I've read, the amount of protein a person needs before surgery depends on your gender, age, and weight. After surgery, it will depend on if you're absorbing everything you eat, or if you have a malabsorptive surgery. Protein intake for bariatric patients, pre or post op is meant to replace the protein we lose with weight loss.
  3. I would feel way more comfortable asking the server if I could order off the kids menu because I had surgery than busting out a medical card that announces that I am a bariatric patient and can't eat their regular meals. Seems passive aggressive haha

    Sleeping help

I had that problem during the second week after my surgery. I was just wide awake all night. I developed such bad RLS (restless leg syndrome) that I was already feeling it in my arms. It was horrible. When I talked to the PA at my doc's office he said to start taking extra B12. I told him that maybe it was the Famotidine (Pepcid) I was told to take at bedtime that was causing it. I asked him if I could take it early in the morning and he said whatever worked for me. I also read that melatonin was the best solution for insomnia in bariatric patients. When I started taking 24mg of melatonin at night, taking the Famotidine and extra B12 in the morning, I started sleeping through the night. Of course, it's ALWAYS best to check with your doctor. My personal experience is not medical advice.
  5. So for the past couple of days, I've been having black diarrhea. Is this to be expected? I know iron can cause black stool and I've been strictly on liquid diet so could explain the diarrhea, but how do I know it's not an ulcer? I just don't know what I can do over the weekend when the surgical group I had the surgery with or the bariatric coordinator at the hospital to contact for my questions are off for the weekend.
  6. 3 months post op: Jan 9th - Ferritin - 162 (normal range 13-150), AST - 35 (normal 5-32), ALT - 51 (normal 5-33) 7 months post op: May 12 - Ferritin - 90.5, AST - 43, ALT - 77 - Ferritin has come down to normal and liver still going up. I saw my surgeon the day before yesterday. She said that high ferritin and high liver enzymes is fairly normal, after bariatric surgery.

    heartburn, nausea

Promethazine (also known as Phergan), is an antihistamine with sedating properties. It's used for allergys. Do you mean pantoprazole? I find esomeprazole more effective, but they are the same class of drug. They belong to the proton pump inhibitor group or PPIs. They are of benefit when stomach acid escapes back up into the esophagus. Bariatric practices will routinely prescribed a short course of a PPI, say for 3 months. However if you have a liver disease, this could be a problem, but your surgeon would have thought about this before prescribing a PPI. Were you not supplied with these?

    Depressed before surgery

Thank you!! Yes I did not go to that restaurant i was invited to at comic con, my fiance and I went to benihanas instead and I am so proud of myself for just eating steak and veggies and saying no to that rice! Yes I am now doing private therapy once a week and joined a binge eating support group and life after bariatric surgery support group. In the literal week I've been in therapy I've learned a lot about myself already and family patterns etc. It's amazing what a difference it makes! I really haven't told anyone I'm getting WLS except for my sister and two close friends. We told my fiances family the first time I considered getting it and they were scaring my fiance and me telling us about this person who know this person who had complications and this lady who can "spiritually" heal me from overeating instead of surgery (Hispanic small town problems lol) and I didn't end up doing it. So now we will tell them when I'm out of surgery, I don't need any negative opinions, this is my journey and no one else's!
  9. I just met with my surgeon yesterday for my 6 mo post op visit. I brought up this same question as my sagging skin is becoming more apparent as I continue to lose (at 90 lbs lost). He said that most insurance will pay for this procedure as a cause of Bariatric surgery and done by a plastic surgeon. He mentioned that you need to first lose all the weight, then maintain that weight for at least 6 months, before they would approve the surgery. He stated arm or leg skin surgery would not be covered but tummy tuck was. I was hopeful to hear this although I have not gone through the process yet to vet the accuracy. I’m sure it depends on your specific insurance plan benefits and worth a call.
  10. Good Morning Everyone! QOTD is what is your favorite recipe/foods/shakes for your pre or postoperative surgery? I am still able to eat many foods except for carbs still so I haven't delved into Bariatric recipes yet, but I will share mine once I do! For now I've been trying a lot of different protein shakes from Premier Protein including chocolate vanilla, chocolate peanut butter, cake batter, strawberries and cream and caramel. I love all of them, except for strawberries and cream is not my favorite, but they have been great for when I'm craving dessert! I have one for breakfast in the morning and I mix it with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen to keep my skin looking great during this process! I feel like that and my Solgar Biotin and Hair Skin and Nails has already been helping. I am big on skin care amd a Sephora "junkie" and can give anyone advice on that!

    Stalls and plateaus

Honestly and genuinely, and without disagreeing with anyone here (because only they can know what has worked for them and all of our experiences will differ) stalls and plateaus are a completely normal part of losing weight after WLS. If you stick rigidly to the plan you have been given then in the vast majority of cases stalls will break, plus eventually (sooner or later - and people get there at different rates) you will get to your new set weight. That weight might not be your ideal weight but that's what the surgery does. All of the side stuff you do along the way makes little to no difference IMO. It's window dressing. And we kill ourselves angsting about it. Sure, if we've been on a long stall and we then decide to increase/decrease protein/carbs/exercise/type of exercise/duration of exercise/CALORIES/whatever, and we resume losing weight, it is human nature to attribute the renewed loss to whatever we did. But we're working with an experimental group of 1 (me) with no control group. Basically if all the time we're sticking to our programme then that's what kick starts the new loss, not the other stuff. If I could go back in time 20 months I would just say to my post-op me "stick to the plan, use your tool, and see how far you can get. You will lose rapidly and lose slowly with no rhyme or reason. Stop comparing yourself to others - they're different to you. Surgery works, stick to the plan!!!!" I really hope this helps someone else.

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

Omg I love this what a creative idea. Those surgery pictures of the insides would make me think twice before trying to cheat haha. This would be great to do in the hospital too after surgery so I have a project to occupy my time. My therapist told me there's tons of good recipes for bariatric meals on Pinterest so I joined that today and started saving some and reading articles as well!

    May 2023 surgeries

Thanks for the compliment. We're on vacation too (nothing as fancy as Europe). It was our year to visit family. And y'all know how that goes... dinner our, picnics, BBQs, road trip food. 😫 My husband and I shared most of our out to eat meals, but we went to all our favorite restaurants from home, so it was hard to just ordet something that was bariatric friendly. It's been hard keeping track of food, water, and weight. I've lost, maybe 2 lbs, but have definitely maintained while we've been gone. We get home tomorrow and am looking forward to getting back to my normal routine. Sounds like you enjoyed your trip. We've only ever been to England and even then that was when my husband was stationed there in the military. I would love to go back some day.

    Depressed before surgery

Thank you for your response, I've realized through this whole preop process how addicted to food I really am. Thankfully, I am taking the right steps and joined Betterhelp for therapy. There is a group session for Bariatric patients where I met a therapist who is a bariatric patient and food addict herself and I felt a weight lifted off of me talking to her yesterday and am going to continue with her twice a week. I feel like this is going to be a huge key to my success. I was having a breakdown when I posted that, but I feel much better now 😆 my fiance and I have decided to go to benihana that day as a date night,we've never done teppanyaki together and I'll get to have some yummy meat and vegetables and not cheat on my preop! I am feeling more hopeful now than ever and I'm sorry if that post came off as negative to anyone. My health is number one and I will be getting this surgery because we are all worth it!!

    May 2023 surgeries

Synlee, sorry for the late reply (been out of town). My buddy's wife had similar issues, although not as bad as you. She couldn't keep anything solid down, but could do liquids. It lasted for over a year with multiple revision surgeries to try to open up her esophagus. Finally, she switched doctors and he was able to solve the issue. She is eating real food now and doing much much better. I hope everything gets better, but if it persists, you might look at visiting another bariatric doc just to get a second opinion.
  16. Howdy y'all, I discovered this forum when I would Google questions I was feeling and this seemed like a great supportive community to participate in while I go on my adventure. I'm currently 2 days post-surgery (had my bariatric sleeve done on the 11th) and was wondering if you guys had any advice for a newbie like me? Something you had wished you had known before. My current set up is I have a timer for an hour to ensure I hydrate and at the second hour I go for a short walk in my apartment hallways to avoid blood clots, shake down any gas still in me, etc. Currently, think I'm out of the weeds with the gas pains (though my shoulders still feel a little crunchy when I massage it, if that makes sense lol) and now just suffering from the abdominal pain from the main incision but I have my pain reliever for that when needed. But I am struggling to walk as I'm just shuffling my feet and hurts to reach for stuff, anyone know a good timeline to expect this to be lessen? I appreciate any helpful advice and guidance y'all might bestow upon me.

    Maybe finally doing this.

Hi all, my name is Carrielee. I’m 32, from TN. I’ve been overweight/obese since childhood and the weight keeps piling on as well as the co-morbid diagnoses. I was finally referred to Bariatric surgery earlier this year after an Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension diagnosis and just finally scheduled my initial consult. I’m scared and anxious and overwhelmed and questioning things but also don’t want to die early and that’s where I’m headed with things as they are so it’s time for a change. At 5’1”, I currently weigh 298 pounds, putting me at a BMI of 56.3. I currently have Hypertension refractory to medications, Type II Diabetes, angina, high cholesterol and triglycerides, sleep apnea, arthritis in most joints, past history of pulmonary embolism, IIH, fatty liver disease, tachycardia. I’m on a fast track to early death due to obesity like my mom and grandfather faced and that isn’t what I want my reality to be.

I’m literally eating myself to death and it’s not what I want for myself.

    Regrets

61 days until my surgery and I'm already having buyers remorse. I know it's all in my head. I have an amazingly supportive husband in all of it and he's had to hear the gambit of my emotions from elation to utter defeat surrounding this surgery, so much so that he honestly doesn't know what to think sometimes. But he's on board 100% even if it does mean he will have to do most of the cooking for himself and our kids for a while so that I can adjust to turning down the "head hunger". I ordered a few different protein powders and shot (an assortment box) so that I could start the prep work. I have been so bad lately about "well I can't have it after surgery, so I'm gonna stuff my face with it now" ice cream, cookies, I think I had 5 normal sized cupcakes on 4th of July. At this point sometimes I'm eating just to eat because I still have issues to address with my eating. I have psych appointments lined up with the bariatrics team at Mayo as well as my usual psych and shrink. I want to get a hold on my relationship with food before the surgery and with so little time left I'm worried that I can't do it. I'm petrified that I am going to mess myself up worse having the surgery than if I just kept going without it. Weightloss isn't the #1 reason I'm having the surgery, just a big bonus. I have to have the surgery because of another surgery I had almost 20 years ago starting to come undone and causing issues and more damage. I'm so scared right now that I'm going to end up hating myself for putting myself through the misery. But it's time to "Embrace the Suck" and move forward. We are all in various places, but it's so great seeing everyone be so supportive from every walk. I'm happy to have found this site.

    Chewable Vitamins vs Swallowing

Man i go back and forth because I already have everything and these vitamins are so expensive. Chewables do not sound appealing to me at all and yes from what I've read nasty haha. I'm considering getting the bariatric advantage Chewables as a backup, I just want to do things right and I guess since I'll be taking vitamins for life it's fine to stock up!

    Chewable Vitamins vs Swallowing

WHen I had my sleeve, I had to have chewables. They're SO nasty. OMG. So when I had my revision to bypass, I bought liquids, thinking I wouldn't be able to swallow any pills (I couldn't do any kind of pills with my sleeve for like 4 weeks). I was shocked when I found I could take ALL my pills with absolutely no issues at all by day 5 after the bypass. So now I have the liquid vitamins that I'm finishing up and then I'll be switching to normal bariatric vitamins (mostly because I refuse to waste money lol )
  23. pintsizedmallrat

    Salads

It's probably because it is lower in vitamins and minerals; I don't know if it's a "forbidden" kind of thing or maybe a gentler "Hey if you're going to have a salad choose darker greens that offer more micronutrients because iceberg is basically crunchy water." Iceberg isn't going to hurt you, it just would probably be better to choose something like spinach or spring mix because those greens contain iron and calcium, something we bariatric folks often struggle to get enough of.
  24. I buy all my vitamins from Bariatric Advantage. They have a chewable and capsules.
  25. With the regular vitamins you were able to absorb everything in one dose. After surgery you don't absorb as much at one time. For example I was told anything over 500 mg of calcium wouldn't be absorbed at a time. So with bariatric vitamins they need to break up the doses over the course of the day instead of taking it all at once. That's why they might seem like "weaker" vitamins.
