    Sleeve Vs Bypass

One More reason to have the sleeve. Once you have the bypass you can never take ibuprofen or any medication at that type, no steroids. when you're young you think you're invincible but if you get older and have arthritis or any kind of inflammatory disease you will wish you could take an ibuprofen! I have an autoimmune disease. My Rheumatologist would not approve the bypass but he would approve to sleeve.

    Christmas Day...Whoops

Yesterday marked the first Christmas that I cooked dinner all by myself. I was proud, but it was bittersweet. My mom usually makes the dinner and I assist, but this year she was not feeling well. She has a rare autoimmune disease and has been in remission for several years. However, it has reared its ugly head again, leaving her weak and depressed. I only hope that we can get her back into remission quickly and that she bounces right back. I had my first fill last week, and can definitely tell a difference. I really can only eat the 4 ounces at a time now, however, it does not stick with me for more than 1.5-2 hours. After that, I am starving again. Needless to say, yesterday probably was not one of my shining moments in weight loss tendencies. Because I cooked, I tasted. I also had dinner at my fiance's parents' house and then back to my parents' house. So, two dinners (4 ounces each), 2 deserts (really small slices, but still), and who knows how many "tastes". Oh well, today is another day, right?
  3. Has anybody with an autoimmune disease had this surgery?? I have Grave's disease (affects my thyroid). The surgeon did not seem to think that it would be a problem at all, but I am still going to talk to my endocrinologist on Jan. 22nd to see what he thinks about me having this surgery. I have done nothing but gain weight since I was diagnosed and treated with radioactive iodine for Grave's disease. (I had radioactive iodine which killed part of my thyroid and made me hypothyroid instead of hyperthyroid.) I am really wanting a solution to my 80 lb weight gain. :help: Thanks!!

    Lap-Band and autoimmune diseases

I have some autoimmune issues (narcolepsy and fibromyalgia). I was told that it should be ok. Weight loss can be a big struggle for a lot of narcoleptics and many have lost weight with some sort of surgery. My biggest concern was making sure that this was just restrictive and wouldn't be malabsortive at all since I know I am going to have to be on meds for various issues. So the surgeon assured me that I can take the pills and not have the band affect their digestion.

Newbie finding out I am insulin resistant

I took metformin for steroid induced diabetes..was on prednisone for an autoimmune condition. Metformin didn't help me much and certainly didn't help me lose weight. I think prediabetes is one of the co morbidities included to get approval for lapband so I would think surgery would only help you.
  6. My husband had VGS surgery nine days ago. He had complications due to some of his comorbidities, and spent six nights in the hospital instead of one. While he is happy to no longer be hungry, I'm concerned about his unwillingness to follow the rules of his program. He refuses to walk. Even in the hospital, where walking every two hours was mandatory, he refused to budge. He walks to the bathroom and back to his recliner, and that's it. The rest of the time, he bellows out his demands, 24/7. Bring men Jello, bring me ice, bring me Water, come clean up my mess, get me a Protein shake. While I am sympathetic and want to be comforting, my suggestions that he could get up or even reach for something have been met with rage. He is furious that he feels so bad. My telling him to walk off the pain has generated more anger. He ridiculed the nutrition instructors and actually walked out of his post op class. Now he expects me to keep track of his needs. And those comorbidities that caused problems in the OR? He still refuses to handle them. I've been screamed at, yelled at, belittled, and cursed. How can I help him to get himself together so he can work on living with this new tool? And how do I protect myself? I have several severe autoimmune diseases, am a cancer survivor, and I live in constant severe pain. Normally I'm on heavy narcotics but right now I'm limiting my pain meds in order to drive him to his appointments. He is not supportive of my issues. Because I'm on a biologic drug for my arthritis, I'm susceptible to infection, so I worry about having to handle clean up when he gets sick. I do it, but I worry about the risks. His surgeon actually suggested he go to a rehab facility after he left the hospital. He refused. How do I get him up and moving again?
  7. Congratulations! I also have autoimmune issues as in mild lupus and RA. I however didn't disclose this at the time of surgery (I do not recommend keeping deadly secrets from your doctor) and I'm doing fine. I was banded on 12/23/11 and have not had any problem, on he contrar. I feel alive again. Good luck to you and God bless!
  8. I believe this surgery may even help my Autoimmune disease. I am waiting every day for news from the coordinator to confirm that she has sent it to the insurance for approval but so far no news. Maybe tomorrow.
  9. I know exactly how you feel. I am also 58 yrs old, confident one minute and terrified the next. I worry constantly about the healing process as I have an autoimmune disease which may result in slower healing. Its getting real now as my coordinator is submitting my papers to insurance this week. But i know this is 100% the right thing to do and I have great confidence in my surgeon.

    Got Bad News

As for steroids, you Dr. will probably take this into account. I have been on and off them for years due to autoimmune disorders. My surgeon could trend my weight with my steroids. However, you cannot be on them before/after surgery. It will impair your ability to heal. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. That was the way it was for me too. No one really knew what was going on with me but they did know that it was something. I finally had a spinal which for the most part confirmed that I had MS (DX. 2004). My major concern with my Dx and the Lap Band is that there has been recent advertisements for the Lap Band that state if you have an autoimmune condition you do not qualify for the Lap Band. Have you ever heard this and if so why would they say that????
  12. Is there anyone here with Sarcoidosis, Lupus or a serious lung or autoimmune disease? Did you have the surgery and are you experiencing any difficulties because of your autoimmune disease?

    spouse

My husband is afraid too. Luckily (or unluckily?) for me, I have some concrete health issues I can point to--I think it helps men wrap their minds around this stuff. 1. I am diabetic and want my A1Cs perfect, for once in my life. 2. High cholesterol, high BP, and sleep apnea will all be improved when I lose weight. 3. I have a weird autoimmune disease that causes my body to attack various organs in my body. It is often thought these attacks are mounted by gut hormones, and that losing weight may improve my body's inflammatory response. I figure it's worth a try... Good luck to you. If you can break it down for your husband, it might help. I hope it does!
  14. Too much soy is not good for anyone, male or female. I used soymilk in place of dairy when my youngest child was nursing, b/c she was dairy allergic. After several months of daily soy milk (just on Cereal in the am), I developed Hashimoto's autoimmune hypothyroidism. It may be coincidence, since sometimes pregnancy triggers this as well, but soy is a well-known goitrogen so now I avoid it almost entirely. The studies on asians and lower rates of some cancers now show that fermented soy (tofu and tempeh) are the key; they don't eat processed soy products like milk and cheese.

    Is it just me....

I total agree with all of you! I read the positive stories and I feel so excited about what's to come for me. Then, as I sit here, 5 days post op and read a post about the band triggering autoimmune diseases and I'm like wtf?? Everybody has a different experience with the band and I hope and pray that I am one of those people with a success story. Best of luck to you all, and props to all the positive bandsters out there handing out encouragement! Us new bandsters are in desperate need of it!
  17. Good god you're prickly sometimes, woman!! We are just trying to help. And in case it's not 150% obvious to you, you are NOT in a good place mentally/emotionally, and the stress we speak of is not some abstract thing that isn't impacting you physically, it's a real issue that is blocking you all over the damn place...not to mention the fact that you're in a PTSD situation, an active war zone, with a head injury, a hernia, and possibly a new autoimmune illness, following a year or two of hard emotional hits. These are NOT circumstances under which you should be chasing super-low-cal eating. Don't like my opinion? I'm okay with that. But it's based on science (and common sense, frankly), not on VSG guru-ness, which expertise I have never claimed in the slightest. So if it's also not clear: We are concerned about you. And *I* think you should NOT be eating sub-1000 calories. Not because I've had some la-la-la easy time of it (I haven't lost a gram in MONTHS), but because -- wait for it -- starving yourself is never a good idea, even if it's "effective" in making you lose weight. This is why they TREAT ANOREXIA instead of ignoring it. Jesus, woman. We do it during the so-called "honeymoon phase" cos it's the only option when you're first post-op, and that is also the same time period during which most of us get pretty frequent medical check-ups too, cos it's not just a-okay to live sub-1000 over the long term. It causes malnutrition, among other problems, no matter how many supplements you take. And given your health and stress issues, you need to be effing taking care of yourself, not finding new and improved ways of punishing your body and yourself. So yeah. There's my less-varnished opinions. <3
  18. I don't have RA but I have lupus another autoimmune disorder. Had surgery in Oct 12 I've been off my lupus meds since. My labs have been normal and lesser episodes of joint pain.. surgery or should I say weight loss helped control my lupus best thing I ever did..
  19. Lupus, fibromyalgia, RA, Celiac's and other autoimmune diseases. Sleeved May 15. Feeling so much better. Down 30 and no flairs since surgery. Stopped several meds 10 days before surgery and have not restarted them. It has been a Good thing...
  20. Well, the seminar was good and I got to talk to the doctor. I have lost 27 pounds since I my PCP a month go. I have been on a 900 calorie diet, high Protein, low carbs, low fat, no red meat and NO SWEETS! The doctor recommended the Sleeve for me. That's the GOOD news. The BAD news is that till Dr Turnquest gets my records from and talks to my Liver doctor, he won't know if I will be able to have WLS. He said it depends on how much liver damage I have. (Autoimmune hepatitis and nonalcoholic cirrhosis. I will find out on June 5 when I go for my first meeting I with the dietitian. (I have to go for 4 sessions). So till June 5, I won't know anything definite. I don't wait well. LOLOL Actually, I expected this to happen. I never asked my liver doctor how much damage I had. So I will be playing the waiting game once again. SIGH.........
  21. Have you tried going gluten free? Graves is an autoimmune disorder and a lot of research I've been reading lately shows that autoimmune thyroid disorders can be helped by going gluten free. A good book to read is "Stop the Thyroid Madness."

Beating the erosion horse to death

I wish I had time to really dive into this post considering I'm on thyroid meds for underactive thyroid, PLUS I have Sarcoidosis, an auto immune disease. And YES my port immediately became infected. But if Sarcoid or Thyroid would reject the port, why didn't it reject the whole band? I personally don't believe my thyroid or autoimmune had anything to do with it. I think my surgeon did sloppy work or just a fluke. Donali, Karen, Michelle, Diane, Penni, Francesca, Karen, etc... all eroded. Did they all have my same conditions? Uh, nope. I'm not being mean, I'm just too busy to get fluffy right now, but I mean well!

    Why VSG

To not be embarrassed to dance in public. To wear a bathing suit in public, with confidence. To finally learn how to swim. To be free of chronic pain, (back, knees). To experience some relief in my autoimmune disorder. To finally feel confident enough to flirt with the guy I like. To learn how to enjoy working out. To not be the fat friend. To not work so hard at being good at other things just because I am insecure about my weight. To enjoy being naked. To enjoy sex again. To feel sexy, happy, and free. I have been overweight my whole life, this exercise was very cathartic. I am looking forward to this journey. I'm scared, but I know that I'm doing the right thing. In about a month, I will be sleeved and on my way to being the me that I always knew I could be.

I asked my surgeon the same thing because I have an autoimmune disorder and I get sick often badly and he said if my caugh or cold is not very bad at the time of surgery then they can figure something out, if not they can reschedule. -Surgery Date 4/29/16
