  1. Thanks for all the posts! Makes a girl believe that this journey isn't for nothing. I am a little past three weeks out post op (surgery Jan 25) and I haven't seen a loss in over 10 days! I know that it is part of the 3 week stall, but still so upsetting. I am hitting my liquid and Protein intake everyday, as well as taking all my required Vitamins. I just wish that the scale would move just a little bit to show that what I am doing is so worth it.
  2. Way to go. Looks like you hit the 3 week stall. but you seem to be taking it in stride. Also, congrats on the tracking! That has been a key to my success. The surgery is a fantastic tool, but the exercise and using MFP EVERYDAY, that is ALL YOU! Get into the good habits now and it will make succeeding in the long run so much easier.

    Need motivation and help!

NatashaSaysRawr - search for "embrace the stall" and "3 week stall" - you are NOT alone. It's normal. You did not break your sleeve. I had a stall at week 2-3 and then again when I got down into the 220's and again now in the 190's. AGAIN - it is NORMAL. Continue to do what your surgeon and nutritionist told you to do. SIP SIP SIP Water. Get your Protein in. The first few weeks it is hard to do, but continue to try. A lot of people have doubts - I know I did...but if you use your new tool the way it was meant to be used, it will work. It's not magic. You have to do the work, but it can be done.

FINALLY found a way to break a stall!

Me and another WLS friend are doing this starting today. http://5daypouchtest.com/plan/faq.html#9 I hope that it will help me get past my now 3 week stall. So far today I have only had Protein shakes and tomorrow will be the same. Wed I will be back on soft solids again and by Thrus/Frid regular food again. I hope that this will help so I can finally get to that 250 and under club for us giant guys.

    HELLO JANUARY SLEEVERS!

Hows February going for everyone? I had the dreaded 3 week stall. Its like our bodies go in hibernation. I'm good with it though. after a week.. lost a pound. I"m a low BMI'er so slooooowww weight loss is what I"ve heard
  6. I"ve lost 0 pounds this week in the 3 week stall. I'm averaging 2 pounds a week loss. dont be discouraged. I've read many times to just keep going and the weight loss will come

    Frustrated with stall...

I have a 2-3 week stall (sometimes gain a few pounds during) every single month when my period starts. And yet, I've still managed to lose over 100 pounds since surgery in less than 6 months. 24 pounds in a week is freaking unbelievable - imagine how much your body is freaking out right now, trying to balance itself. It thinks you're in a life and death crisis. Be patient with yourself and in 6 months to a year you'll be amazed at how far you've come. We didn't get obese overnight and we aren't going to get healthy overnight either.
  8. Well, you are losing weight. You lost 10 pounds the first two weeks. You are now starting your third week, a time where it is well documented the body stalls. Happened to me and many many many others on here. I actually stalled at 2 and 3 weeks. Do a search for the 3 week stalls and a very good post about embracing the stall floating around here.
  9. I had mine on 12/31.. I've lost about 20 lbs to this date, I've hit a 3 week stall. so.. from what I am reading.. it happens.. sucks.. but it happens.

    Embrace the Stall

The 3 week stall is different than stalls that come along months after surgery. Here's why:http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html#.UqP7uBLn-Uk Yes, but stalls are still a natural part of the process. They are going to happen.

    Everything Sucks.

Like said above, stick to your plan. You can do this! You have your tool, time to work it. It WILL work. Have no doubt. It took me just shy of 12 months to lose my weight. I had many 2-3 week stalls. But that was my body adjusting. After the first couple broke, I learned to accept them. You will too. It's part of the process. It takes time for our minds/habits/tastes to change. Our capacity changed in the OR. The others will catch up. Patience. You can do it :-)

    THE WORST!

While it is frustrating IMO it really isn't a bad thing. I feel my 6 month diet gave me the extra time I needed to REALLY research what to expect from the pre-op diet, the surgery, recovery from the surgery and my diet after surgery. It gave me time to start to practice eating better. It gave me time to wean off of caffeine and soda. I attended one of my programs support groups. It gave me time to figure out what Vitamins and shakes I wanted to have on hand for pre-op diet and after surgery. Too many times I have seen questions from people that are quickly approved by insurance and quickly have the surgery are on the boards asking about what they are allowed to eat at the various stages after surgery. They are the ones that are surprised that they shouldn't be eating simple carbs. They are surprised by the 3 week stall and the initial discomfort after surgery. They are surprised when they are moody after surgery. There was nothing I went through that surprised me. I read a ton of people's personal experiences here on this board. My insurance required 6 consecutive months sometime in the last 2 years. Since you only had 4 months you would have had to do it again. My insurance allowed Weight Watchers, dr supervised, LA Weight Loss, Medi-fast. Any commercial program that I could document 6 months of monitoring.

    2 months post op...gaining

Sounds like you hit a stall. I had a 3 week stall at 6 weeks. Up a pound down a pound. I stuck with it and this week I've lost 6 pounds. It's a normal thing. Search it on here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    New November sleever!

I had my surgery one week after you. I just came off a 3 week stall and am so excited to be losing again. When you say your weight loss is very slow what do you mean. I'll be 10 weeks out this week and have lost 39.5 pounds. That 3 weeks of not losing definitely had made a difference. Still it is 40 lbs and my clothes are all getting baggy. We all drop weight differently. Does your Dr feel it's a problem? In order to get your protein in try having a 30g Protein Drink for Breakfast. That should ramp up your protein. I put 1/2 of a frozen banana in my chocolate Premier Protein from costco in my nutribullet with 3 ice cubes and I love it. Keep up the good work!!

CW 284.6 Hallelujah! My 3 week stall is over. Yay!!
  17. Hello everyone. I read the forum daily, but never post. After an incident last night, I felt compelled to. A little about me: I'm 34 and was sleeved on 12/16/15. My SW was 295 and CW is 271. I had my surgery through True Results. I had been depressed lately because I went through the 3 week stall. I really wanted to talk to others that knew what I was going through. So I planned on going to True Result's once a month support group meetings for guidance and support. I live with my cousin who had the lap-band 5 years ago, but it didn't work so well for her. She decided to have a sleeve revision when I had my sleeve. I asked her if she wanted to come to the support group at True Results with me and she said yes. We went and when everyone introduced themselves, I realized that I was the only person who had the sleeve. They were so anti-sleeve and found myself defending my choice all night. I heard things like "with the sleeve you gain all of your weight back after a year", "the enzymes grow back within 6 months to a year, "the sleeve is too invasive", and "the science proves that the lap band is superior". I felt vulnerable already because I feel like I'm not losing like I should, especially after my 3 week stall. They just made fun of me for whining about not losing weight fast enough. They were even rude to my cousin because she wanted the revision. I left even more discouraged than when I came in. Three of the women monopolized the discussions with any and every thing that popped into their heads. I was only able to speak during my introduction. I didn't want it to be all about me, but I didn't feel like I could get answers or just let how I felt out. We are all there for the same reason. Our surgical methods are different, but that shouldn't have mattered. Rants over. Thanks for reading.

    Do You Log Your Food?

I log every bite on SparkPeople.com I've just had a 3 week stall at 9 weeks out and without my log I would have second guessed my brain into pudding. I agree with the suggestions in JeanieboBeanie's post for suggestions. Thanks for writing it all down so concisely. I currently use Cron-o-meter, but have used MFP, Lose it, and some others attached to devices (like BodyMedia and Up.) Here's my wish list: Detailed micronutrient tracking. Cron-o-meter is FABULOUS at this and I appreciate it more and more as I transition to solid food. It tells me if/when I'll be ready to drop particular supplements. Along with this - a real blue-sky dream - an app that can suggest particular foods that will help me meet my goals. For example, if I'm not getting enough Iron, suggest liver or other foods that are super-dense in that particular nutrient(s) Goal ranges instead of discrete ceilings or floors A way to log my hunger at the beginning, middle, and end of a meal (a simple 1-10 scale would be fine) A place to keep notes on how I'm feeling (stressed, tired, bored, celebratory) and some way to mine that data back out (see reporting/exporting) A good recipe builder. One of the things I appreciate about Cron-o-meter (and I hated about My Fitness Pal) is the fact that it keeps a running weight log for any given recipe, so when I eat it, I can just weigh my portion and put that in (as opposed to determining set portions.) The ability to translate and move easily between measurement units (g v. ounces, volume) The ability to scan barcodes The ability to sync bi-directionally with my fitness apps (see: Jawbone, MapMyFitness, etc.) so I only have to log things like biometrics (weight, fat %) in a single place Robust reporting and exporting so you can see patterns and make connections (e.g. changes in macronutrient ratios when you're tired, etc.) I'm not a huge fan of crowdsourcing foods...UNLESS they include ingredient lists with amounts. Otherwise, how do I know what's in that chili, or if it's nutritionally similar to MY chili? That's my main beef with MFP (but not my only one.) I don't trust the data. Every bite. SparkPeople.com. I'm in a 3 week stall and at least know where I'm at nutritionally.

Do i qualify for the surgery ?

The information seminar is normally a power point presentation to a group of people that are interested in WLS. One of the surgeons in the practice normally goes over obesity and the risks of obesity, the various surgeries that practice performs (sleeve, bypass, band, DS), the normal outcomes for each surgery, the risks of each surgery. They will normally discuss what else is available through their program such as Nutritionist (NUT), support groups. Frequently they will have a former patient come in to talk about their experience. Then a Q&A session. There is normally a coordinator there with handouts and they will take you name and number to follow-up to see if you want to schedule an evaluation appointment. The surgeon will likely have a few requirements prior to scheduling surgery. Most of them will be to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery: blood work, pulmonary clearance/sleep apnea test, Upper GI/endoscopy, EKG, PCP clearance, cardiologist clearance. Not all surgeons require all of those. It depends on the surgeon and your individual co-morbities. Many surgeons require a psych eval and may require you to attend pre-op support groups. Please do not rush from the first visit right to surgery. Take your time, do your research, make sure you really understand what changes you will need to make to your eating habits and your lifestyle. IMO the posters that come to this board shortly after surgery and are surprised about how hard it is, don't know about the 3 week stall, don't really know what they are supposed to be eating/not eating are normally the ones that saw the surgeon and a couple of weeks later are having surgery. As much as I was impatient with the 6 month supervised diet and the pre-op clearances it gave me the time to really start my new habits early. It gave me time to spend on Bariatric Pal reading about what worked and didn't work for people. It gave me time to really think about the whole process and how i was going to have to change my life to make this work. I don't have children so I don't have that complication. But having small children and needing to cook for them, shuttle them around, clean up after them while you are trying to heal and change your eating habits may make it harder. Your kids and husband are not going to want to drink that Protein shake with you. You may need to be cooking them food you shouldn't be eating. Having the time to really process that mentally before the surgery is a good thing. I don't want to seem like I am trying to dissuade you. I am not. This surgery was the best thing I have ever done for me. I am saying take your time to learn and to research. Go to a couple of different surgeons/practices. Find the one you are comfortable with. Don't pick the first one you go to because you are impatient to get on with your new life and your new you. I think insurance companies or surgeon's practices that have no pre-op requirements can be setting many patients up for failure. (Somehow Mexico is different since that is a different model altogether.)
  21. Just wondering who else is with me? I am just under 8 weeks post op and have lost 40lbs. Had a 3 week stall. Just seem to be losing very slowly. I figured out I was snacking too much so got that problem solved. Started going to the gym and that helped break my stall. I get in my Protein and liquids. Sometimes I struggle with liquid but usually I do ok. I get frustrated with the slow weight loss. I feel others expect more. I expect more. I always struggled to lose weight my whole life and so now that I lose slowly it is difficult on me. Emotionally I struggle making sure I am doing the right things but it's difficult. Stall

@@reece1239 they happen...I am currently on a 3 week stall...Christmas filled carb holiday didn't help. back on the wagon now :]
  23. great advice... i am 3.weeks out - weighed at my one week appt and that is it. I agree on the fad diets - I did it so much I had to have gallbladder surgery. I am worried about the 3 week stall. i havent exercised much - i have a broke foot. Darn it!
  24. Wednesday will mark 3 weeks for me. My start weight was 283 surgery date weight 270 and for the past week I have been between 250 and 253. I have gone up and down between those weights. My doctor cleared me for soft foods last Wednesday so I thought that would help get things moving. I'm frustrated because I hit a "stall" a few days before 2 weeks and now I'm hearing about a normal 3 week stall. I'm not noticing anymore NSV witch is frustrating to. Actually felt bloated the last couple of days. I'm also having an on and off again horrible pain on my left side closer to rib cage. Doctor said he has no idea what it could be but possible kidney stone. Also worried because I have NO problems with any fluids. I can drink a lot just have to remind myself to. And haven't gotten sick from any food I've tried. Yesterday and today I have felt hungry really for the first time also. ????. I have anxiety pretty bad and I think I'm over thinking all this so much! Any advise would be great. Thanks so much!

Can I specifically request Gastric Sleeve?

You can certainly request the sleeve. But I concur with the others that say be open to listening to your surgeon if he recommends a DS or bypass. Make sure he provides sound medical reasons for that recommendation and if you still aren't comfortable get a second opinion. I think everyone should have evaluations by multiple programs if they have a few good programs that are a reasonable distance. I went to one just over an hour away since I was more comfortable with that surgeon and practice. You need to find the program that will best support you in the way that you need to be supported not the way I need to be supported. Even if you insurance does not require a pre-approval diet or a psych visit I recommend that you have the psych visit. I also recommend going to a nutritionist that you can build a relationship with that can prepare you for the eating changes specific for a bariatric patient. That NUT may be part of the bariatric practice or it may be a different individual. I think that starting to make the changes in eating prior to the actual surgery makes having the surgery and resulting changes less of a shock and less traumatic. I weaned off of caffeine and soda 1 month before my surgery. This way I wasn't going through caffeine withdrawal during my 10 day pre-surgery liquid diet phase. I even started easing into that diet about a week early and going replaced a few of my meals with the Protein shake. This way when I did go to the all liquid diet for the 10 days it wasn't as hard. I personally feel there is a correlation on this board between the people that don't know what to eat after surgery, are surprised about the 3 week stall, are surprised about what to expect after surgery for their restrictions for the rest of their lives are those that went to the evaluation and suddenly 1 month later have surgery. I think that when you get the approval so quickly you don't have time to go to pre-op support groups, you don't have time to research realistic real-life expectations post op. My insurance made me do the 6 month medically supervised diet. It was not the worst thing. It gave me time to really do my research. It gave me time to internalize the life-long changes I need to make to my diet and exercise to succeed.
