  1. Patients that are at risk of developing blood clots or have had them prior do have to stay on them a little longer. I had a previous clot and was put on Lovenox injections for 2 weeks after surgery. The injections bruise badly and can become sore so I stayed as far away from my incisions as possible. I think most people only get the shots while in the hospital.

    Hair loss!

My understanding is it doesn't matter how much Protein, Water or Vitamins you take. Its just going to happen I started taking large doses of Biotin and B vitamins (hair vitamins) four months prior to surgery and following surgery. I absolutely refused to lose hair and was going to be different then everyone else. At almost 3 months to the day, I noticed hairs on my pillow but didn't think much of it (not true). While in the shower and rinsing my hair, a big clump came out in my hand while I was gently squeezing water out. And, it's been that way since (12/2/15 surgery). I've got thick curly hair and don't notice anything troublesome yet, but I'm only 5 months post surgery. I've looked at wigs, wiglets and weaves-just in case. I also color my hair and lose alot at the hairdresser-she's not as gentle as me. Instead of going every 4 weeks, I bought this product you can spray at your roots. I'm wondering if this will help hide patchy spots too? I try to limit washing my hair to once/week-coarse dry hair loves this. I wet it or spray leave-in in between. And, limit brushing to the underneath at night and morning. Let's face it, if it's going to come out, it's going to come out regardless of when/how much I touch it. There's a name for our hair loss: Telogen Effluvium Telogen effluvium is a phenomenon that occurs after pregnancy, major surgery, drastic weight loss, or extreme stress, in which you shed large amounts of hair every day, usually when shampooing, styling, or brushing. It can also be a side effect of certain medications, such as antidepressants, beta-blockers, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. During telogen effluvium, hair shifts faster than normal from its growing phase into the "resting" phase before moving quickly into the shedding, or telogen, phase. The symptoms: Women with telogen effluvium typically notice hair loss 6 weeks to 3 months after a stressful event. At its peak, you may lose handfuls of hair. How much hair have you lost and is it noticeable? Pam
  3. I'm 2 months out of surgery and 60lbs down only 50 more to go.....i had developed a stricture after 3 weeks and had to go back into surgery I'm doing well now...

    Have you tried Gordons Talapia

Just bought these a couple of weeks ago and I love them. Easy to prepare and very tasty. Multiple flavors so I don't get bored. These are great and keep you on track. Big thumbs up.
  5. Pcindy - 3 weeks? Be strong babe..... I did one week and found that bearable.....it sounds like you have your head in the right place tho.....this is a long term thing, and the more you can shift during pre op the better. I figured with mine that hubby paid for the op (from inheritance money) and the least I could do to honor the relative was stick to my side of the bargain and be 100%. If they opened you up then said not doing it you'd be gutted..... so i do think your advice to follow a vague pre op is a good one. It can't hurt anyway!! Good luck with your 3 weeks..... we're here for you, when you want to cheat come and post on here and we'll put you off bigtime!! Kathy

    I tried some protien powder..

Yeah, your body has to get adjusted to your new eating habits... When you start taking Protein it usually takes your body a week or two to actually adjust. Once it does you will start feeling more energetic and less fatigue. Plus if you are waking up in the more starving, it is a great thing because you are suppose to fast through out the night. Once you eat Breakfast you should feel extremely refueled.

    Gas post op

Walking, walking, walking! And it takes a good 3 weeks to level out entirely - you will sound like an orchestra for awhile! Anesthetic and the air they pump into the abdominal cavity is the cause of the gas pains. Hang in there, it improves daily. Also do not get dehydrated, carry water with you always.

    Help fighting boredom

Hi, Im new to all of this (second fill) and I never relized how much extra time i would have on my hands after I stopped over eatting. I dont know what to do with myself anymore. Sometimes I feel like a trapped animal. Last weeking I almost broke down in tears from boredom. Im too overweight to do a lot of activities that I would like to do and I have discovered that almost 100% of my interaction with family and friends takes place over some sort of eatting event. What do you guys do to burn time? I have been to the zoo, but it was so hot that I was miserable. I've gone shopping way more than I can afford. Now what? I live in San Antonio and I looked for a LAP-BAND® support group here in town but couldnt find one. I've even thought of trying to start one, but Im not sure how to go about it.

How much did you lose on Pre-Opt diet?

I lost about 15=17 pounds on my preop.... I did a week of liquids.... then I did some liquids and a low carb high protein low cal dinner.... Then 4 days before surgery I went back to only shakes.... I use newlifestyle shakes
  10. I am in the appeal phase of my journey as my insurance denied me the first time. I am waiting for assistance from Obesitylaw and so I won't know for another week or two when my appeal goes in. Once I potentially have an approval, I am wondering how long is it before I can have surgery? I know I will be going to do the 2 week liver shrink... so that's two weeks, but I thought perhaps I had to have other tests before I can schedule the surgery. How long from approval to table did it take you?
  11. I've been filled before, lost some weight, then lost restriction. Because of various factors (moving across the country, not having a doctor pn the east coast yet, not having a job and therefore living on a tight budget, and then the worst--my dad dying), weight loss hasn't been as much of a priority the past six months as it could have been. So I have been at a plateau for 6 months. Finally, I'm going in next week to get a fill. For some reaosn I feel so nervous though! I guess I'm worried that the doctor will do it too tight, or not tight enough, then I'll have to get adjusted right away again (and pay $ again). I couldn't find any doctor in my area to do the fill under fluoroscopy for a reasonable price, so I'm doing it without fluoro. Anyone else ever felt scared about getting a fill? I guess I'm just nervous about what to expect after a "blind" fill.
  12. My surgeon never does fills under fluoroscopy, unless he suspects there's a reason it's needed. I've never had a problem getting a "blind fill", because even though it can't be seen, it can be felt. I don't work in the field so I can't say for sure, but he has been very detailed in desscribing how the resistance on the syringe helps indicate fill level to him (remember, the saline is under pressure - when the port is hit, you can have a little geyser in the syringe). And a lot of it is hit or miss. But I think this would also be true for fluroscopy. It only shows what's going on that particular moment in time. Sometimes I'm just tighter than others. I figure odds are about even that I could have a "tight day" under fluoroscopy and look like I'm adequately filled, and need a fill 2 weeks later... or I could have the same fill without fluoroscopy and need the same fill 2 weeks later.
  13. I have been experiencing some heartburn the last week or so. Wondering if anyone else has this problem. It has been a couple of months since my last fill and I was thinking of scheduling another since I am not really losing. What causes the heartburn? Any suggestions? Thanks in adance!
  14. Really excited, I had my consultation yesterday which was great and I have booked my op for 31st August!! I am excited but scared at the same time! If anyone has any pearls of wisdom to share I am all ears!! I can't wait, it shall be the start of a new me!!
  15. So I start my pre-op diet tomorrow and it's an extended pre-op diet because I have such a high BMI and fatty liver syndrome. So it's twenty days of these specially formulated Protein shakes from Minogue Medical, and a maximum of 250 calories worth of low glycemic vegetables a day. Up until this point, I have spent so much time doing research, picking up ideas on foods to make after my surgery and getting myself as familiar as I can with everything, but now that I'm the day before my pre-op diet, I'm starting to think... "this is actually happening" and I'm getting exceptionally nervous. I know this pre-op diet is going to be really hard, but I also know that I can do it. It's just now I realize that I'm less than three weeks away from getting on a plane and flying to Mississauga, where I'll have my surgery and it's making me incredibly anxious. Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to deal with pre-op nerves? Maybe any tips on how to stay focused and not "cheat" while on the pre-op diet? Any help would be great. Thanks, Rachel
  16. I had the shoulder pain like you at night, after a week it finally went away. Never had the stomach gas, hopefully it will all go away soon. Good luck and keep us posted. Patsy
  17. This happened last week. I met my surgeon (PRE-OP) and I dont know what hit me but when I was driving home, I played Katy Perry ROAR! Sang at the top of my lungs and just started crying. Thinking about the second chance to live the REST OF MY LIFE AT THE BEST OF MY LIFE! Take a listen and sing with me http://youtu.be/CevxZvSJLk8 I am going to sing in my gown with my daughter before surgery! LOVE YA

    is it just me?

I noticed that the gas subsided about three months after surgery. Gassy days are rare now. I am eating the same diet as back then. Not sure what happened but I'm much happier now. GasX really didn't help much that I could tell.
  19. Hi Everyone! Happy almost Thanksgiving! I am just a little over 3 weeks out from surgery and I am exhausted. All I want to do is get in bed and sleep. I know that being tired is a common issue after surgery and as you adjust to your new lifestyle, but when did this start to turn around for you? I am trying to focus on getting my Protein in each day, getting my fluids and taking my Vitamins but it has been a struggle. My NUT gave me the green light last week to move to soft food but nothing really tastes good and the 30/30 rule is killing me. I know this gets better and I know I am probably just having one of those "what did I do to myself" days so if you have any advice/wisdom to share, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Kathy

    Feeling Like A Failure

Oh, I forgot something kind of important. After my surgeon's madatory 6 weeks post-op I did get a fairly conservative fill (dont remember how much) and the result was I couldnt eat ANY solids with out excruciating pain in my chest (NO NOT heartburn,...much much worse. and it was right after I swollowed. so a few das later I went in for a partial unfil.l and then, liek I said before, I went right back to my old ways...and with little to no problem......eat any amount, eat any kind of food. Occasionally the first meal something will get stuck and I have sliming etc. but never an y PB's . SInce this unfill, I havent seen my surgeon. its been months now!!
  21. good luck for the surgery tia x i'm 5 weeks post op and feeling fine :thumbup:i am very similar to you by what you have said -don't worry too much about being sick etc. u will learn by experience what u can and can't tolorate -u'll be fine x claire :tt2:
  22. I just wanted to thank everyone for all of your posts. I really appreciate all of the advice. I took all of your suggestions to heart and promptly called my dr's. office first thing that morning. Of course it took them til' the middle of the afternoon to get back to me. Anyway, after pleading my case with the nurse practitioner, first I was told no I needed to wait until I'm seen for my first week post op appt. I can't begin to tell you how quickly Niagra started falling, but after a little more talking the nurse cleared me to move cream soups and thicker protein drinks (joy oh joy)! I am so happy to report that I had some of the best blended cream of mushroom soup. It was like a warm and fuzzy blanket. My husband said he was all to happy to get it for me because he really didn't know who the crazy, hungry, out of her mind woman he saw me turned into. Again, I know this journey is going to be hard but one I'm willing to take and take with all of you wonderful people. You all ROCK!
  23. So in the post op discharge meeting everyone In attendance had the sleeve so the instructions were catered more to them since I was the only one to have the band that day. Don't get me wrong I was a little annoyed but at this point it is par for the course since every class I've gone to I have been the only bander there. Having said that, I was told by the nurse since there were no specific instructions for the banded patients I should stick to stage two liquids until I see the post op nurse a week later. At first that sounded reasonable but 6 days into liquids only I have come to the following conclusions: 1- is it reasonable to keep a person on liquids only for 11 total days? 2- somebody needs to develop a recipe for clear chicken!! 3- I hate Protein drinks!!! 4- I'm not a fan of the "diet taste" 5- and I'm liable to kill someone for a piece of chicken (half kidding, but serious!) Having said all that can anyone please give me some advice before I catch a case over a piece of chicken breast. Thanks for listening.
  24. Feeling better today. First milestone is I was able to walk around the block - mind you I had to wear my ab binder for it but I'll take it. My liquid diet consists of lots of milk and I think this is where I am having gas problems. I had a milk intolerance pre surgery and surgery doesn't seem to have fixed that. NUT thought it would have but no joy. Hang on to those that are going through first week post op. You will have many ups and downs but at the end of the day I'm praying it will all be worth it. 25. My paperwork from my NUT says fat free cream Soups. Couldn't find any of those in local stores, but found 98% fat free regular soups. Looking online, other than the fat content, it appears the non-creamed soups are similar to creamed ones. What's the reason creamed soups are stressed? I cannot eat many of them (food allergies) - but found a non-cream one I can tolerate. Any insight is greatly appreciated. I start my 2 week liquid diet on Monday. Thanks!
