    Aetna comirbidities

Hello, I'm new here.... been trolling for a few days. I was wondering if anyone knows if the only comorbidities Aetna will accept are hypertension, sleep apnea and diabetes. I have a BMI of 36 and I have asthma, joint pain and a hiatal hernia. I think I may have sleep apnea but I haven't been diagnosed. I plan on doing a sleep study to find out if I do. I called Aetna and spoke to a representative about them covering the surgery and under my plan they do. I found the NIH website that listed all the comorbidities that are considered relevant for weight loss surgery with a BMI under 40. Anyone get approved by Aetna with a BMI under 40 and another comorbidity that the three they list?

I'm sort of where you are. 1 fill that didn't do anything for me. I've even gained a pound or two, and I'm hungry and eating more than I'd like. Looking forward to the next fill, but that's 4 weeks away. Trying hard to eat on the South Beach plan, avoid eating out - and like you have a jungle to tame. Dam blasted mower, I couldn't start it so junked it and bought an electric. Can start that one, but man that electric cord is a pain... Maybe I should trade the dogs for goats. LOL...
  3. I went to the doctor for a check-up last week now that I'm six months out and have lost some weight. Insulin resistance: gone! High cholesterol: gone! Borderline high blood pressure: gone! I'm ecstatic! I hope to lose considerably more weight than I have so far for the sake of my appearance and overall well-being, but even if I don't, I will consider myself a successful bandster from here on out. What scared me into taking this major step to aid my weight loss was that I saw that I was beginning to develop signs that my health would truly suffer if I didn't lose weight. It's all about health. 5. Hi all! Have just found this site and I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you. I'm asking for a bit of encouragement. I'm 10 days post op from my gastric sleeve surgery. Doing well at getting in my Protein and my fluids but I am so craving something to eat!!! I am not craving a burger or pizza - just something with a little substance. I am scheduled to go back for my first post-op appt with the nurse practitioner on 1/6 but unless they change their usual post-op plan, I will still have another 2 weeks after that of just liquids before moving to "mushy" foods. I know I can do this but it's a challenge for sure! Any suggestions are welcome. I'm still using the protein supplements that I got from the doctor presurgery and do best with the Soups. I bought some whey powder from Walmart but really don't care for the taste of it. I'm thinking I'm going to try the premade shakes and see if I like them better. I have tried the Atkins shakes in the past and liked them ok but they are more expensive. But it will be worth it if it helps me stick to the liquid phase right?
  6. I lost 30 pounds prior to my first fill and 5 between my first and 2nd. which were 5 weeks apart The first fill of 5.2 gave me no restriction. I received 2.0 yesterday. Won't know for a few days yet if I will have restriction. As I have a 9cc band I only have 1.8 left so hopefully I will get restriction soon. Greg

    Honeymoon Stage?!?!?!?!?

I am only averaging about 2 per week and that has been since the second month. I am almost five months out and have only lost 61 pounds since surgery. We are all different. I never really had a 'honeymoon' stage.

    Honeymoon Stage?!?!?!?!?

It all takes time...stick with your exercise maybe even increase and watch what you eat. Make sure your heart rate is in the fat burning zone when you work out, I use a heart rate monitor which helps me keep in the zone, its very important. Losing 2-3 lbs. a week is great. You don't want to lose it too quick.

  10. Welcome to the Loser's Bench and VST!!! I'm still a newbie (11 weeks out)... and I have to say, this was the best decision I ever made!!! Please utilize the board, you'll find a wealth of information and great people to talk to!!! Congrats again!!! Enjoy your journey!!!
  11. Okay, so I am about four weeks out from the surgery and doing well. I have lost 35 lbs...YAY! For the last week or so, I had lost that post-op "full" feeling and was able to eat almost anything. I wasn't eating nearly as much as I would have before the surgery but I don't think it was the band that was keeping me from overeating but more my paranoia of getting stuck and/or throwing up. Needless to say, it was time for a fill. So, at the doc's office, lie down, tighten abdomen, fluid in, no biggie. Although, I will say that I could FEEL the fluid going in which was a little weird. I told the nurse that I could already feel a difference. She asked me how it felt but I couldn't really put a word to it. She looked at me like I might be a little crazy but I'm okay with that  Stuck around the office and drank the obligatory two cups of water. Even after the water, I was feeling full. I attributed it to my having eaten a salad about an hour before my appointment. So, although I wasn't hungry, I just had "dinner" that consisted of about 1/3 cup of broth and I don't think I could have another drop. Feeling REALLY reflux-y. I don't want or need to vomit but I guess I thought I would be able to get more down. So, being new to this, I have to ask, is this normal? Is it that it is my first fill and the feeling subsides in a couple days or is this the sign of an overfill? I know everyone responds differently to the LB but any insight would be appreciated. Oh, and BTW, don't make fun of me but I have to ask.....what are PBing and sliming? I have read those words on many posts and I have no idea what they are talking about! Sliming sounds like something that happens in a show on Nickelodeon I am soooo not familiar with the jargon yet!

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

Thanks everyone for your candid and timely responses. I appreciate the insight. Although I am discouraged by the fact that most of you say weight loss does not help. I am so sad about that, since that is the only reason I got the band in the first place. I hate the effects of the drugs I am on, I need to think clearly and process information rapidly in my job and sometimes that is a huge challenge. I got off Topamax because it basically destroyed my short term memory and I feel like a big emotionless blob. Diamox Sequels are a bit better, but still make me feel like my mentation drag. It has been a long time since I had a really bad episode. The last time was over a year ago and I went to the Neuro-Ophthamologist and she refused to do an LP after I had been off work for a week puking and unable to move due to a debilitating headache. Needless to say I don't see her anymore. My PCP is willing to give me the medication I need to manage my symptoms. Thank God for small favors.

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

I am so freaked out right now in regards to this thread. In January of 2007 I was at a funeral of a really close friend and suddenly came down with the most painful headache I ever felt in my life. The headache went on non stop for another week until I finally went to the doctor and they attributed it to sinuses. The day after I went to the doctor I started having double vision and the right side of my face started to slope and my eye pretty much parked in the corner and shut half way. I went to the ER and they thought it was Bell's Palsey (which I had twice in the past) and were going to start treatment for it, but the he called Nurology and they wouldnt let me leave til he saw me. When he saw me he decided to admit me into the hospital. I was in the hospital for over a week until they came up with a disease called Tolosa Hunt Syndrome. They started me on 100 mg of steroids which immediatly opened my eye and brought it back to the normal position. Each time the Nurologist tried to wean me off the steroids my eye would start messing up again. He had me see an Opto/Nerologist and he was the one that said I had a Pseudo tumor where the orbits span out. He started me on a pill form of Chemo which is called Methotrexate and eased me off the steroids which caused me to get all the way up to 316lbs. I have been on the Methotrexate for over two years now and have no further problems with my eye. I notice what causes it to start acting up a little is when my stress volume increases or when I cry. I just thought I was alone and did not know anyone else or a support group of anyone who had it. I would love to talk more with those who have it just to get a better understanding of it.
  14. I had my Sleeve done on 3/16/2011 in 5 days I will be 12 weeks out. My weight came down nicely and fast! Yay! So now the issue becomes IM STUCK between 231 (morning) and 234 (by night). My Boyfriend brought a scale in the house and I cant keep off of it. I have weighed myself everyday morning noon and night from mid May till now and I am just not loosing as fast as I was. Is my body platouing?? I have started excersize Water aerobics, just started eating wheat bread again, and eating meat for Protein intake. I just cant digest Protein shakes so I dont drink them, I do drink 100% Cranberry juice all day, water make me hungry...What am I doing wrong? Am I being impatient?? Am I on the right track...Help

    Lost 37lbs and STUCK!

I'd start tracking all your calories and fat and protein on a site like sparkpeople. You may find that you aren't getting enough protein. Also, click on my ticker and you'll see my weight loss pattern. It's very stairstep-I'll be the same weight for a week or two then drop 4-5 lbs in a couple days!
  16. Would this be possible - to get the lapband and try to lose the majority of your weight with this and then do a "maintenance" period by introducing regular food? I did Medifast before and lost 13 lbs in one week by sheer willpower, surely the band would help even more? (Of course this was last year and I've since gained it back and then some). I don't particulary view myself as a sensitive/queasy type person, but I was just reading the thread about food sitting in the smaller pouch waiting to go into the stoma and then something about saliva being so gross when something won't go down and I literally gagged at my computer after trying to picture it. Needless to say I backed out of those threads and am not going to open up anything else like that for a day or two. So, I'm thinking if I gag like that just reading about other people's experience and I don't even have a lapband, what is trying to eat real food going to be like if/when I actually have the lapband? Thanks for any advice!
  17. I am 3.5 weeks post op and my birthday was July 3rd. My family and friends all joined me at the drive-in movie theater that night. People brought their own food, and I happily watched Terminator and San Andreas with my turkey and cheese roll ups. Everyone had a great time.

  19. Hi Melissa. I'm pretty new here too and not banded yet. I went to my first seminar a couple of weeks ago and got my first consultation with the surgeon coming up...well, not until November, but that's okay. I'm spending my waiting time doing a lot of reading and learning about the process. Good luck and welcome!

    Any tips would be great

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I work with 40 woman and I knew lying would come back on me. I tried for a while but I mean it all came out... I never miss two weeks of work so it was obvious that something was going on. I wanted it be not be on the gossip mill to long so I was pretty upfront to keep from the whispers as I hid an obvious change. Close friends know.. Facebook friends don't. But it's the parents of the kids I teach that are who I am concerned with. I am a professional yet still strive to be warm and approachable. I like the easy answers you gave and that might help me in the future.

motivation ... I need to be able to zip this dress up in 5 weeks!!!
  22. Cross your fingers ladies, and hope you have an easy recovery! I was able to reach my Protein and Water goals by day 3... then each day after was just way better. I was back to work in one week. I had some lingering soreness and tiredness, but otherwise felt great. It is hard to predict how anyone will recover... I figured I would bounce back fast because I have after other surgeries.
  23. I am wondering the same thing. My surgery is June 8 and my son is graduating university on June 15th. My problem is that the ceremony is 2 hours away and my son needs to be there 2 hours before it starts. The ceremony is for several programs and could last 3-4 hours. That could mean it will be a 10 hour day away from home one week after surgery. My surgery was booked for several months before we knew the graduation date and cannot be changed now as it took a lot of planning to get time off work.

Is it bad to feel full?

Your feelings of "full" won't be normal for some time, so stop if you think you are. You can always sip some more later to make up calories or hit Protein goals, but it's better to go a bit less each meal (and just have several small meals) than too much. The concept of a normal "full" you are thinking about may also be something you'll need to figure out once you're eating regular foods again. Most of us that gained enough weight to be considered obese have very flawed perception of fullness. I used to eat to the point of feeling sick sometimes. Portion control was a foreign concept, and even now, I have to remind myself I can always eat more later if I am genuinely hungry, but the food won't disappear forever and I can have whatever I'm eating any time. And once you are on solids (especially hitting your protein goals and eating healthy veggies and complex carbs in moderation), your energy level will start coming back. I feel pretty darned great and have a high energy level now. It just keeps getting better every week, so just keep plugging away at the basics (protein/water/moderate activity whenever possible) and you'll be fine. Good luck!
  25. I am so sorry you are having a rough time. Yes I definitely did and I was already on an anti-depressant. I had to get the dose increased. This is an especially hard time for a lot of people - both the Holidays AND post-op. I found out I am getting laid off next week on the 31st, and not drinking or being able to run towards my addiction has been really tough, so I completely get where you are coming from. (Additionally, my father and my brother do not speak, so I have to do those Christmas' separately which is never fun so I really really get where you are coming from with family drama.) I wish I had some brilliant words to tell you to make it better, but I don't. I have been seeing my therapist consistently from 4 months pre-op to now (6 1/2 months post-op) and I plan to continue for at least 2 years. It really helps. I do strongly recommend reaching out to a counselor. She (my therapist) and what she has taught me has been the biggest / best part of my journey. I wouldn't have survived without her help. And as I sit here pouting that I lost my cushy job, I love that even though I am tempted by some of the food and drinks, I have been able to (mostly) steer clear and just stay focused on my health. I have actually outloud yelled at myself to put that food down! I did not say all that to overshadow or demean your feelings. I just was trying to commiserate and not sure I expressed it very well. I am truly sorry you are having a rough time! Feel free to send me a private message if you need someone reach out to. I am not always the best at giving the right answer, but I promise I will do my best and will always respond. HUGS!!!
