  1. Sun Godess, As others have said complications occur even with the most qualified doctors. IMO, I would be more concerned with your heartburn issue and what this new doctor has to say about it. It is my understanding that heartburn can worsen with the sleeve if you already have it with the band. I was revised from band to sleeve and never knew what GERD was until now, which is another chance we take. I take Prilosec which is a PPI drug to control my heartburn and as you probably already know, there are concerns with long term use of PPI's. Just some things to discuss with him if you have not already done so. jake
  2. Good for you! I thought I knew it all and was home free to eat what I wanted....hahaha the lies we tell ourselves! I'm back on protein and starting from scratch before a revision. Curious about it however, I long for the days of wasted weight flying off like gang busters lmao!
  3. So...I have a lap band. I never got to the "green zone" or optimal restriction, just increased unbearable heartburn with additional fills. I have insurance, and kind of fell into the revision process this December. My insurance requires the repeat of the 6 mos diet process again to submit for a revision to sleeve. I do not want to wait and take the chance of ultimately being denied. So, I have scheduled a revision with Dr. Illan in a few weeks. Everything is all set up. I told my lap band surgeon a couple weeks ago at my last appt. He seemed concerned but understood. This morning I got a personal call from my lap band surgeon. He said his partner was in surgery as we spoke trying to fix a leak from a patient who had a sleeve done in Mexico. He said he was not trying to scare me, because he understands that I have to do what I have to do. He was just warning me that they see this regularly. He did not know the doctor or anything. So, I feel that I have done a good job, but am worrying now about the what if's due to it being a "revision" surgery of lap band to sleeve, and the possibility of a leak. It is scaring me now, and whether they REALLY REALLY REALLY check thoroughly before closing you up! I know they do leak tests during and after, but then how does someone get home and then have a leak!?!?! He did say, yes, it can happen to anybody. I am just wondering, scared and slightly second guessing. I can't afford to get back home and have complications and be in the hospital! I have found one band to sleeve patient on here who went to Dr. Illan. I have heard all glowing reviews. I have phone conferenced with Dr. Illan and feel good. I don't want fear to hold me back. I don't want to wait until July/August to hope to have surgery and maybe be denied because there "technically" is no mechanical error with my band. I am ready to move on and find success NOW beginning of April, be several pounds down by summer, all healed up, and moving on with my life...not to mention over this heartburn! Any words of wisdom and experience...especially of band to sleeve revisions would be greatly appreciated!

    Mexico Sleeve

Hello, I am having a band to sleeve with Dr. Illan on April 1. I visited the website MissKay shared, but it mentioned coverage for pre-existing conditions. I'm very interested in getting it just to be sure! Does it specifically cover "complications?" Also, any tips and notes about your experience with Dr. Illan. I'm nervous due to it being a revision.
  5. I was all set for sleeve as well. At my appointment last week they told me that since October, they have had 2 patiences that have had to have their surgeries revised to Bypass because their mild GERD went to severe. That was enough for me to start to change my mind. I don't want dumping and was looking forward to an easier surgery but I keep thinking how great it would be to never have heartburn and reflux again. I'm also very scared but I think I'm changing to the bypass. I also have around 100 pounds to lose. When do you think you will have it??
  6. awesome! Thank you! Yeah I did take to big of a sip one Time and I definitely felt it. When I go back for my recheck I plan to ask my doc to show me the swallow test. I hope he can access it because I really want to see what the stomach looks like. I had revised from the band so I was worried I'd have a tougher time post op.
  7. I was originally sleeved on March 3, 2016, but I've been having some issues. I saw my surgeon recently for my one year appointment, and he said that the only way to fix my problems is to revise me from a VSG to an RNY. I'm a little freaked out honestly! I avoided that surgery to begin with because it scared me, now it looks like if I want to lead a normal life I need to do this. Of course I started reading stuff online, and I'm even more freaked out now! People talking about all the issues they've had, even talking about having reversals because things were so bad! Could anyone that's had a VSG to RNY please post your experience...either on here, or message me. I couldn't find a thread about this revision...just the band to RNY. Hoping someone out there has some info for me. Thanks!!

Anyone is San Francisco East bay area?

I am in Walnut Creek. I had my VSG on March 3, 2016...but it looks like I need a revision to a RNY. I'll be having it done at Travis AFB again of course. I told my surgeon that my sleeve is his handy work, and I don't want anyone else messing around in there! I am pretty hesitant about the RNY, and I'd like to talk to people that have done it. Please message me if you'd like to chat, or email me at: aschuttpelz@gmail.com Thanks!!
  9. Hey there! We have very similar stats! I was doing the same thing with the carbs and sugar and got back up about 40 from my lowest when we decided to do the revision and still up like 25 when he did it. I'm down 10lbs in the past week since the procedure and so thankful to be going in the right direction again!

    band to sleeve

Well I probably won't be a ton of help. But I revised from the band to sleeve on Monday. So far I think the pain has been pretty comparable. With the band I took pain meds the first 2 days and just once on day 3 mostly due to TOM. This time I was in the hospital for 2 days post op. I think the last time I asked for pain meds is early Tuesday morning. I did have a lot of nausea post op with the sleeve. I was only supposed to stay one night, but I could barely drink anything without feeling very nauseas. I did not have nausea after the band. And I did vomit a few times in post op recovery too. I t is definitely harder to get fluids down . I currently feel like I constantly have something stuck in the back of my throat. I've been doing better drinking at home than I was doing in the hospital. My surgeon did not send me home with any pain meds (which I was surprised at, but didn't really need). And told me if I'm in pain to take Motrin or Tylenol. I do have a little of pain getting up and down, especially in and out of bed, but it's self limiting, so I wouldn't have taken meds for that anyways

I had sleeve to bypass. 2011 sleeve 2016 revision to bypass due to acid reflux.
  13. Since another surgery is inevitable, and your family is on board with the removal, just try to get the removal and revision at the same time without telling them about the sleeve. They're happy, you are happy.. and when you drop weight, just say you are, indead pushing yourself away from the table [emoji6]
  14. I got my approval and date today for my revision. What did I get in return? The most intense bought of reflux I have had in a month. Just a reminder of why I am doing this. April 10th can't get here fast enough!

Well yes. Apparently the issues I'm having are SUPER rare according to my surgeon, but they do happen. So I am having really bad reflux (taking 80mg of Nexium daily), but that's not rare...I know a lot of people say that they have that issue. My big problem is the burping. Doesn't matter what I eat or drink, I burp. I don't mean cute little lady burps...I mean manly belching that lasts anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on how much I ate or drank! It's really annoying, very uncomfortable, and down right embarrassing! The surgeon had me do an upper GI in which he saw that my sleeve was having some trouble emptying. So he did an EGD, and injected Botox into the pyloric valve at the bottom of the sleeve to hopefully make it stay open a little more so that my food can empty. Well, I just went for my one year appointment, and we discussed how things are going. Apparently the only way to fix this is to do a revision to the RNY. Still not sure how I feel about it.

Hi all! I am in Walnut Creek. I had my surgery done March 3, 2016...just passed my one year mark. Due to some complications from the sleeve, it looks like I'm going to have a revision to an RNY. I'd like to find people to talk to about all this. My husband is wonderful, but he hasn't experienced anything like this, so he doesn't have information or opinions to offer me. If anyone wants to chat, message me!!
  17. Converting to sleeve was a great decision for me! If I don't lose another pound, my improved quality of life is worth the 15k I spent on the revision! Banded 2010 weight:327 Sleeved 12/28/16 weight:253 Currently 220.7 lbs 106 lbs down!! Heather in Texas
  18. Sorry it took so long to respond!! Mine was empty for a month before surgery. The most I ever had was 4cc in a 10cc band. The hardest thing for me is the full feeling. I don't generally have it with the sleeve until it is too late and I'm over stuffed. For me, gas was much easier to deal with and recovery was much easier with the sleeve than the band. Don't worry about weight loss for the first month. Just follow the plan that your dr gave you and heal!! Loss is slower than for first time sleevers, so don't compare yourself to anyone! My quality of life has greatly improved so if I don't lose another pound, it was well worth the 15k for the revision! Good luck tomorrow! Let me know how it goes! Banded 2010 weight:327 Sleeved 12/28/16 weight:253 Currently 220.7 lbs 106 lbs down!! Heather in Texas

    Feeling indecisive

I would try the sleeve first. You have a lot of decades left, and the malabsorption aspect can have long term consequences. If the sleeve doesn't do it for you, you could get a revision.

    5 days post op

I am 4 weeks out now. 26 lbs gone. I had the revision because I was not able to keep food down with band and after some investigation found I had a hernia, damage to my esophagus and erosion from the band. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    400+ LB Vets advice

I wouldn't consider myself a vet, but hopefully this will help. My highest weight was 426 and I was 390 surgery morning July 20th. I am a little over 7 months post op and down to 273. Because of the high weight, the first six months of weight loss went fast. I went through the 300's pretty quick. Now things are going a bit slower at month 7 and I am having to work a little more for it, but that is normal from what I've read. I revised to bypass from a lap and, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

    Trouble eating 10 years out

I had a VBG in 2005 and have never been able to eat more than slop ever since. My stomach swells and becomes as tight as a drum. I told my Doctors about the problem and they made all the right noises about revision but never delivered. Dieticians came up with the answer that it was all in my head. Finally some 12 years later they have come up with the solution. The stapleline has come undone and the area around the band has narrowed. I found that I too had pain around the ring area. Don't give up. If you think there is a problem remain positive and stand your ground

    Revision... Aetna

That's all you had to do prior to your revision??
  24. I am currently in the process of trying to get approved by Aetna for revision surgery from sleeve to bypass. I have GERD, regain and a "deformed fundus" (which looks like an addition pouch up top/ shaped like the letter "P") from my pouch stretching abnormally. My surgeons office submitted the pre-cert to Aetna on Friday. I am just wanting to hear people's Aetna revision experiences. Thanks!
