Howdy vets. As some of you know, I'm going back to school to get my degree. After being out of school 27 years, going back is like facing every worst nightmare I ever had. It's scary. But the belief in myself I have now after losing all my weight is making me realize all things are possible....even college algebra (gulp). My wife is a PHD and has worked in academics all her life...mostly in university settings and now for a medical school. She has 15 years of higher education compared to the 2 I'm about to undertake, so she has a good bit of experience to lend me. She told me last night that no matter how much information I may have forgotten since high school, that my "natural obsessiveness" would carry me through. WTF? Me? Apparently...it took all that natural obsessiveness to lose the weight and get in shape like I did, and educate myself enough to be able to do so. According to her, I always had it, I just didn't know how to focus it on a given goal. And now that I do I can wield it any way I choose. Sound reasonable? Do any of y'all feel it took obsessiveness to get to your goal? And have you been able to redirect that same focus toward something else afterward?

Speaking as someone with a ph.d., you know what the difference was between those of us who graduated, and those who quit? Those of us who graduated didn't quit. Really. That was it. Persistence. We put up with whatever BS, jumped through whatever hoops, dealt with inevitable delays and were like stubborn MULES that were NOT going to quit until we had it. The ones that quit lost patience. I don't think I was always intelligence, ability, or anything intellectual. Persistence. Same thing that made you keep at it until you hit weight/fitness goals. How many guys like you quit on the weight a long time ago? But not you, right? My first 3 years were no problem. Due to health, pregnancy, unsupportive spouse issues my last year took me four years. Persistence. Good luck. You will do great.

Physician Letter?..Input Please.
pjpanda replied to HalloweenBaby24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ran into that issue. I didn't have insurance for the longest time so I didn't go to the dr unless I was really sick. Basically all they want is a record of your height and weight. 1 had 3 visits. 1 in 2010 from the gyn, 1 in 2013 also from the gyn, and one from 2014 from the consolation. For me, they decided to go ahead and submit for insurance approval as my bmi is 50 and has been since 2010. Insurance approved my surgery within a week. As long as they have your height and weight on the paper, it doesn't matter why you saw the dr. -
Physician Letter?..Input Please.
Pelicanlady replied to HalloweenBaby24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the same requirement from my insurance. They want 5 year history showing me being obese. My problem is as most obese people our weight is always up and down. Nine years ago I lost 100 lbs and have slowly put most of it back on over the last 5 years. So, i don't have a 5 year history. When I am obese I don't go to the doctor because I don't want to get on the scale. My insurance is UHC Choice Plus and I have been with them for at least 15 years. Maybe that will help. Good luck HalloweenBaby24. -
From Lapband To Sleeve?
GoingforGoal replied to jadekatz's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Jade, There is no easy solution. It's a misperception to believe wls does the job for you. No matter what surgery you get, you will have to abide by the rules 100% to reap the benefits. Revisions are great when you are suffering true complications and one surgery is not working out for you. But I know my doc wouldn't qualify someone who just doesn't want to put the work in. They'll predict it'll be the same scenario under another procedure which requires just as much diligence and compliance. Getting wls and getting results takes dedication and work. The difference between pre and post op is that these procedures can help you with things like hunger management, portion control which in the long run will be critical for maintenance. Also, counting calories and understanding how much you are putting into your body allows you to get an understanding of what it means to be on target or to overindulge. It took me years of counting to finally get to a place that I can estimate with accuracy and no longer count. But the reality is, if I consume more than my allotment, I will stall or gain. Weight loss has a very simple formula that cannot by bypassed- weight loss= calories consumed - calories burned. You either workout or you limit intake. No wls changes that. -
Sorry to hear that you had the port problems. However, 40 pounds is indeed an awesome weight loss! I hope that it's smooth sailing for you from here on out.

GENERAL ANSTI. ONE DAY AND THE PAIN FROM THIS SURGERY IS VERY PAINFUL MORE SO THEN HAVING THE BAND PLACED I DONT KNOW WHY BUT IT HURT TO SIT OR LAYDOWN. I DID HAVE SOME PAIN IN THE PORT AREA BEFORE IT WAS DISCOVERY THAT I COULD NOT GET A FILL AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NORMAL IT WAS NOT A BAD PAIN JUST AN I KNOW YOUR THERE PAIN I THRO- IT WAS JUST MY PORT LETTING ME KNOW IT WAS THERE, BUT IT DID GET WORSE AS I GOT CLOSER TO HAVING IT REPAIRED. Hello All! My name is Kimberly. I am 24 yrs young, married with no children, and currently a pre-Nursing student. I am 5'7, 354lbs with a BMI of 55.4. I started the lapband journey just over a year ago. I have Humana EPO, and they have been terrific. To qualify I had to have: Medical records with recorded weights for the past two years, (one a year was sufficient), Letter of Medical Necessity from my PCP, and 6 consecutive months of nutrition/exercise advise from my PCP (each month I went to the doc, she typed in something along the lines of "advised Kimberly she needed to lose weight, follow low-carb high Protein diet and exercsie 3x per week..yadda yadda yadda). I turned all of that into my insurance and received an approval less than a week later! (This was after my father, who is the primary insurance holder, forgot to renew me on his insurance last January..thus having to wait another 6 months until his open enrollment, then another 3 months for my insurance to become effective again, so this prolonged everything by 9 months :-/) But alls well that ends well, and now I am anxiously awaiting my surgery date. I am having it January 25th with Dr.Rehnke at the Palms of Pasadena Hospital in St.Pete, FL. I start the Optifast on January 11th, and really am NOT looking forward to it. What helps me is the fact that my mother had the surgery with the same doctor a few years ago, so she has a bunch of tricks that she has passed on to me. One of which is to buy a BUNCH of different flavored extracts, like banana, Coconut, Almond etc. to add to the shakes. I'm hoping that will help with the variety. I guess the main things I'm nervous about are: 1.) I have bad acid reflux when I don't eat. Will I have this while on optifast? 2.) Anesthesia. I've never been under before, so I'm frightened of what my reaction will be. 3.) Just generally nervous about something unbeknownst happening to delay or prevent the surgery such as bad preop testing, complications in surgery, and various of other possible scenarios that have to come to mind. I want this so bad, I feel like I've been dreaming of it for a very long time, and now that my dream is being realized I'm afraid I will wake up! I look forward to continuing to post as I experience this new journey in my life and I look forward to reading all of your stories as well! Happy New Year!

Revision to RNY:Scaring myself crazy!
meyouus posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I have my appointment to see the surgeon's LPN, or maybe even my Doc as well, IDK, on 4/9. I've given them all the necessary paperwork, test results, etc. They know me from my Banding in 07. Here's the thing. As educated as I am, I am feeling scared to death! I don't know what this appointment is for. I'm freaking out about having someone go in and tear my insides apart. I'm scared I'm not prepared. It's just such a major event! Doc wanted me to lose weight before surgery, I lost 33. I am for the most part, chair bound, except when I go to my desk job. (I use a Rollator to help me walk, and hold my oxygen.) How long will I be out of work? Oh this all is driving me crazy! Is this normal? -
Slowed Momentum
hiddnstar replied to Kimmie Lou Who's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When this has happened with me, I commit to just one day of eating very strictly to plan. If I don't see a weight drop, I commit to another day of very strict eating practice. Usually I see a drop in weight which re-sets my motivation and commitment to lose all this weight once and for all. It may not be what works for everyone, but it works for me. I eat a lot of chicken and Im learning to mix up a nice dish using curry paste, fish sauce, and lite coconut milk. I cook small, bite-size pieces of chicken in the mix and pour it over a tiny bit of mashed potatoes. It is tasty, filling, and has that "comfort food" aura. Hope this helps you or someone else reading these posts! You'll get back on track --- and don't harp on the holiday stuff. It's not helpful to keep mulling over bad choices made in the past (if that is what you're doing); it's done and over with. Thank goodness, huh? Focus on today's choices. ~hiddn -
It can be really hard to turn things round when you're iin a rut. I find it easier to focus first on exercise, doing extra, upping intensity, even starting a new program/focus (i cycle around between slow steady running, interval training, curcuit training to prevent boredom and plateaus) and then the eating follows. It really only takes one or two good days to get you back on track and srrong enough to keep going. I'm not a big one for "diets" but it can also really help just to follow a program - like a week of eating that you get in the Weight Watchers magazine or similar. Personally, I always called up for a week or two of Lite n Easy which is a home delivered calorie controlled plan we have here. Just take away the guesswork and temptation and get with it, and you know you'll get results. After that I was always fine to carry on on my own. These slumps hit all of us from time to time.

Did You Feel This Way?
bobrocky replied to sally125's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is good practice time for you. Start eating the small protein filled meals. Chew, chew, chew your food. Cut into small pieces etc. That alone will help. If you get hungry try a string cheese or SF popsicle. That kept me from gaining while waiting for first fill. -

I think I only had to do 3-4 months supervised weight loss. The nutritionist was a bit of a drive, so I did one of my supervised WL visits with her and the rest with my PCP. -
Congrats!! On your banded baby an on your weight loss.

Diet restriction after an unfil?
TracyNYC replied to Mel Mel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am unfilled because my band slipped. I also had no instructions other than try not to go crazy. I did lose 10 lbs in a week b/c of the slip and not keeping anything down. Since mu unfill 2 weeks ago today I have gained 13. I have been eating horribly, but also know the last 10 pounds I lost were not a healthy loss. I can't wait to be refilled after my revision and get back on track. Good luck with your test. -
Awww! Congratulations on your baby boy! And your incredible weight loss. I was banded 12.21.12 and stories like these help keep me motivated! Thanks for sharing and keep up the awesome work!

Hi Everyone! I'm back and ready to rock and roll after a few crazy months. It started with a bad tummy virus which made it impossible to keep down any food or even Water. I guess the stomach gets inflamed and what was a nice amt of restriction turned into way tooo much. So they had to remove all the Fluid from the band. I was freefalling baby! Once my tummy was better I went a cruise and really from there the summer was not a great time for me. I ended up gaining about 8lbs back from my loss (boo hiss) but since getting refilled two times I have lost all of that and am now on my way to losing more. I'm a good restriction level which will prevent me from overeating. I'm also making great choices again. I had some gyn surgery 1.5 wks ago so I haven't been able to exercise yet but I plan on starting up just as soon as possible...maybe tomorrow since I'm feeling half way decent. I was doing so well before the summer...on the treadmill for one hour per day RELIGIOUSLY, doing crunches and I even started some universal arm work. But typical of me, once I fell off the wagon....I FELL OFF! lol So, how is everyone else doing? I miss hearing about everyone. I promise not to vanish again. I know we can all have a GREAT 1 yr BANDIVERSARY if we stick together. Hugz to everyone! JPT

Hi Honk, A few years ago, my gyn noticed that I had gained a lot of weight and tested me for thyroid problems. I have low thyroid and take meds everyday. I was also diagnosed with PCOS and could not get pregnant. They kinda go hand in hand. My fertility specialist told me that losing weight may take care of both issues or I could always have PCOS. Ask your doc to do a blood test and find out if your thyroid is an issue.

I'm at the very beginning stages.... Had my first appt end of April! I see people saying that they didn't get approved because of a weight gain, but what are they referring to? Can you not gain any weight from first spot to surgery date? Or is it month by month? Or just on pre-op diet? I'm so confused.... I'm 3 lbs heavier than my spot last month... Will this be an issue?

Gaining weight back! Help!
HeatherinCA replied to Hopes of a Dream!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's normal when you start eating to gain a little don't worry. As long as it's not a ton of weight! The liquid diet wasn't intended necessarily to make you lose weight, it's Water weight, and your body is healing. Just make sure you are watching your diet. Fill up on things that are low in calories if you can, eat protein! and drink all your water. What are you eating? -
Hello; I am being submitted for approval tomorrow and am concerned because I was told that Medicare requires among other things, 5 years worth of doctor notes with weight information. Like many overweight people, I didn't like to be weighed. So for my notes, I only have the last 3 years notes with weights and the first 2 years it says I refused to be weighed. Has anyone else run into this particular problem? I was told that some insurance companies will take pictures if the date of the pic is shown on the pic. I am hoping not to be denied, but was wondering that if they are a stickler for this information, what can I do. I cannot speak to the pre-cert department with United Health Care as they will only speak with the provider. Member services is just telling me to wait until the information is submitted and see if they contact my doctor for more information. I am really started to stress over this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. K

Well, I am new to this site and I have recently attended the seminar on the lap band procedure. I am scared to death to be honest . I am 32 years old and have struggled with my weight for many years now. I guess you could say I've hit rock bottom . I find it hard to play with my kids, I'm embarrased to go out to see old friends, I'm just tierd of the struggle. I decided that I wanted to make a life long change. Any advice I could get would be great. I have a consult scheduled for Aug. 28th. I pray this is the help and the answer I've been looking for. I'm willing and ready to do the work it takes and to make the changes I need to make. I just can't do it alone. I've tried and failed so many times now. I need !

Help! Exercising Made Me Gain Weight?!
Jolie_KeMi replied to Teddy bear's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It could be anything: Water retention, TOM bloating, gaining a bit of muscle... Don't freak out. Think about this: 1lb of fat = 3500 calories. There is no way in the world that you consumed 7000 calories in 2 days being 3 months post op. Stay off of the scale for a few days until this passes. Weighing too frequently can be stressful! LOL. -
My hubby and I are bikers, Bikers for Christ members to be exact. I had surgery 3/19/12 I've list 27 lbs so far, I have no restriction yet, just cut out carbs. Anywho, my man told me today that he could tell I'm losing weight because my stomach used to be against his back and now he doesn't feel it. WooHoo, thats even more awesome being as its summertime and it feels so good to have some air between us. C:
