  1. I think some if the issues re fluid intake maybe because of your nausea. Let's face it, when you feel sick like that the last thing you want to do is swallow something to stir it back up. You will get through this. You are strong and have made it this far. Keep envisioning what you will be doing in 3 months you don't do now! Everyones journey is different. You can do this! I have lost 24 lbs since 10/1 when I had my surgery. Just look what you have to look forward too!
  2. Yes I agree I am going to be 10 weeks post op and I’ve only lost 41.4lbs and am only losing at most 2.8lbs a week since on soft/solid foods. I haven’t been doing my 30 minute walking which probably would help.

    Getting back in control

    I just got my sleeve on 10/1. I'm still dealing with head hunger and the nibbles late at night. I see how I could derailed easily, however I'm fighting the fight. My husband works 2nd shift and gets home around 11pm - 12am. He is really good about fixing his dinner and eating it in the dining area. However, from either the Bedroom or living room, I swear I can smell it! Head hunger is a powerful thing. I laughed the other night as I found his stash of cookies and told him, "well, I'm not sure I'll ever eat those again. So, I do have the power. But, I could swear I could hear those little drvils calling my name!

    The Maintenance Thread

    So I think my body is weird. I have been at over 1000 calories since August and still dropped a few pounds. September was closer to 1100-maybe 1300. The past few weeks I’ve been bumping up to 1300-1500 with 40% carbs (it was so scary to do that) and I have lost 1-2 pounds in the past month. It has been so much easier to eat more. I can now eat an egg, slice of cheese and 1 cup of cooked spinach in 10-15 minutes and usually finish that. I can drink 16 oz of a protein shake in less than 30 minutes vs it took me an hour to do that 1-2 months ago. Regarding exercise I only go to the gym 2x week but I’m pretty active at home and work so I am usually getting 7-10k steps on non gym days. Even though I am purposely eating more than I desire to slow down weight loss/maintain I do worry that I’m creating bad habits like eating when I don’t feel like it. If I’m busy at work I will go only have 250 calories and suddenly it’s 3pm and I’ve had nothing else. No I’m not eating cookies or chips but I am purposely eating high calorie foods. I do feel like I’m in control of things now. A few months ago I felt like I didn’t and was loosing too fast.
  5. I started training for a triathlon when I was 7 months out (and finished it!!!). My challenge was to get enough calories in to sustain the exercise without losing weight. It's very hard when your tummy can only hold a little bit. I was already doing weights, a leg routine and lots of walking. My muscle mass was fine before and became more defined with the added swimming and biking. I had to drop the Intermittant Fasting because I simply could not get enough calories in an 8-10 hour window. So I started doing a protein shake for breakfast. During the event, I ate RX bars (210 cal, 24 carbs, 12 protein) - good amount of protein to balance the carbs, as I knew I couldn't eat a high carb load by itself - dumping would not be good in a pool or on a bike! I felt great afterward and am planning on a distance bike race next month and another tri in a few months. I am transitioning to a whole food plant based diet, which has more carbs from grains and legumes. But I still struggle to maintain weight. I am stuffed full and never hungry, but still losing each week. As I increase my training, I will have to use more RX bars, I guess, to get some concentrated calories in. I think it is important to keep your protein up. You don't want to skimp while you are training and increasing your workouts. I add protein powder to my smoothies, yogurt bowls, and soups. I have no problem getting enough protein - just enough calories.

  8. what I know about exercise Is that exercise is not for weight loss, you don’t lose weight with exercise what happens is you build muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat. I can’t recall the exact numbers but I think 1 lb of fat only burns 2-3 calories but 1 lb of muscle burns 7-10 calories. so I would think weight resistance, muscle toning and stretching would be most beneficial. for me it’s frustrating not being able to exercise. I have one of few if only medical conditions (that I know of) that exercise causes damage. I get very sick and it literally ages my muscles instead of being beneficial. my metabolism prior to surgery didn’t seem to exist. I was eating approximately 800 calories a day, at best I managed a long walk at first once a week or every two weeks but it’s slowly taken it’s toll. I would go on birding walks to take photographs but each time paid a hefty price physically. My weight started to go up and got out of control. This had happened the first time to this extent in my late teens. All doctors could say is it was metabolic disorders but not what I could do. My first battle with my weight doing strict low carb and low calorie helped. But it was impossible to maintain. I reached A decent goal and it would slowly slide upwards. if I said that already I’m sorry. I find it interesting how some people can eat a lot of calories and even carbs and still lose. I finally hit around 66lb loss from April 29th so around close to six months? My calories range sometimes a little less than 300 Calories if I can’t help it to a little over 400 a good balance is 370. Protein tends to be sometimes a little below 50 grams, to a little above 60 but a good average is 50. I haven’t counted carbs but probably never more than 20-30 net carbs. the problem is that each person is very different in what works for them. My loss has slowed to a crawl but I’ll take anything I can get. What I hope is that this is the tool that helps me maintain long term. My worry is not reaching goal and maintaining it there while eating normal amount of calories. I think I’d hoped I could eat a little more calories or at least worry about them a little less than I do now. For some reason my body didn’t tolerate eating more veggies in the past. Which makes no sense to me, I dip my toe into slightly more normal foods but still rely on the basics like protein powder mixed in TwoGood yogurt, cottage cheese (usually good culture since it comes in individual containers) occasionally poached or soft boiled eggs, sometimes BariatricPal soups like mixing creamy chicken pasta with a packet of beef broth) I might be repeating myself (I’m sorry) I tried things like tuna and got sick. I was told I’ve a stricture I’m not sure the status of that. My nutritionist wants me trying soft vegetables and different proteins. having a colonoscopy and endoscopy threw me off track but thankfully my recent surgery didn’t. At some points my calories ranged a little higher ie. 480 but I tend to vary the calories and protein daily. I tend to see things move by ounces. Sometimes crawl or stall. May my loss was about 24.4 lbs, June 9.7 lbs, July my weight loss averaged 9 lbs, August 7.9 lbs, September 7.9 lbs, and October 5.1 lbs. Total 64lbs from weight at day of surgery of 203lbs. I was 205lbs at last nutritionist weigh in. 208 lbs at my doctors office. BMI 40. Since I have a smaller frame and short height I wish to reach a goal of under 110lbs the last time I got to about 124lbs for now I’d take that over where I was headed prior to surgery. Of course then there is the extra and saggy skin.

    October 2019 surgery peeps?

    I have a few days left, my surgery, like Losing for Jack's is Monday, 10/28. I have the Unjury protein broth that helps and, when I can't stomach another shake, I use that (I like salt more than sweet). The first few days are the hardest, then it's much better. Broth, sugar free jello and sugar free ice pops (also crystal light when you can't do any more plain water or need flavor to trick the hunger) are so necessary. A lot of people in my area must be doing this surgery or have had it, because SF ice pops are so much harder to find than you'd think. Also, I asked a vendor at a hockey game for a SF Italian ice and you would have thought I asked for $1 million. Seriously hard to find any friendly things out and about (it didn't hurt to ask - well, it didn't hurt me....you should have seen her face 😆
  10. I had my sleeve surgery nine weeks ago. I am averaging 1.5 to 2 pounds a week weight loss. I think that we lose so quickly while on the liquid diet that when we start eating food and the weight loss slows down we over react fearing that we will start gaining again. But think back to our pre-surgery days. Four pounds in three weeks, we would have been ecstatic. it took me two years to lose 35 pounds before my surgery on 8/21/19. I’ve lost 47 pounds since then. The bad part for me is that because I carry most of my weight in my belly, I don’t see the weight loss when I look in the mirror. However, as more and more of my clothes are too big for me to even consider wearing, I remain positive about my chances of finally succeeding at what I had considered my biggest failure in life, my weight. This site is so inspirational that it keeps me positive and determined to succeed.

    Losing Too Much Weight

    I've had BD since childhood. I was always very slim until about 9-10 years ago. I thought I was HUGE when I was 130lbs when I was 20. I had massive liposuction done and didn't see the results I thought I'd get so I got really depressed and that's when I started overeating. I figured I was already SOOOOOO fat I may as well eat whatever I want, too. So, I am not new to BD. lol. Now that I am thin again, I still think I am gigantic. I look in the mirror and still only see fat. Just like I did when I was a kid and thin. All I see are flaws.

    Hey WLS Fam 😍 Updates: Yesterday I was my 3 month post op Surgical/NUT visit. I actually had to delay it a little bit as I was still travelling unexpectedly 😌 (I was 3 months post RNY Conversion on 10/15) On 9/6 I needed a dilatation and for a few weeks after it was hit or miss on if it had worked then all of a sudden I was perfectly fine 🙌💃🏆. I am thrilled. Really patience is key. I know its super frustrating to read when youre in misery but sometimes time is what will do the trick. Not every fix is instant. So it appears I scar to an exaggerated level which is why I stricture and it takes time to show up and relax. I'm keeping an eye on this and will know what the symptoms are so if it happens again we'll take care of it quickly. My surgeon is very very happy that during the endoscopy the sites looked healthy. He also very very happy that I have only lost about 5lbs. He didn't want me to lose anymore weight and was adamant that where i am at is where i belong. I agree because when i dropped to 146 ... Mercy ! The skin on my face and neck started to losen. Nope. We also started to document the rashes under the folds of my skin 😉 and he RX powder for it. I suggest everyone get on top of this ASAP if you can... Labs will be processed this week and I'll know what my latest numbers are soon. All food restrictions have been lifted by my NUT. I still don't really eat bread except on very rare occasions. I never eat rice or pasta (was over them since before surgery), I eat starchy vegetables, legumes and roots at my discretion but not in abundance. But bihhh salads here I come

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

    Yesterday, Wed, Oct. 23 Maintenance : 5'2" / F / 1yr PO / 113.0 lbs ...soooo it looks like my lack of success in reaching the 2000 daily cal mark lately is starting to show on the scale. Yesterday's intake was a paltry 1200-ish due to various distractions and this annoying cold I'm nursing. Going to make a concentrated effort to up cals and sustain a higher daily cal average starting today. In any case, here is what I ate yesterday: 10:00am - coffee with Stevia 12:00pm - 5oz grilled chicken + 1 avocado + carrots + Tzatziki 3:00pm - leftovers of my 12pm meal + coffee with Stevia 5:00pm - beef jerky + almonds + pumpkin seeds 9:10pm - 2 tbsp protein ice cream + 2 tbsp peanut butter Totals: 1210 cals - 86g Protein - 39g NET carbs - 73g fat
  16. Did my Wednesday weigh in last week and had a disappointing stall with no loss to report, not even an ounce. Did my Wednesday weigh in this morning (10 weeks post op) and the scale went down 4.5 lbs. However while in my stall week I wracked my brain as to how nor fret over my stall. In true fashion of being a David Letterman fan I decided to go old school and come up with a top ten list of things I've achieved since surgery pertaining to Non scale Victorys and not the number on the scale. Hoping everyone will post a few of their own. Here goes : 1. Actually realizing what full feels like for the first time in 57 years 2. Being able to buckle the airplane seatbelt without sliding the buckle to the very end 3. Being able to leave the bathroom after showering with only 1 bath towel wrapped around me instead of 2 4. Being able to tie my sneakers without being out of breath 5. Being able to easily zip last years winter coat and not having to buy a new one like the last few winters 6. Eagerly remembering to take the Fitbit off the charger to track steps and not leave it there for 3 or 4 days before remembering I haven't looked at it 7. Ordering the work team t-shirt and not having to pay the extra price for the sizes past XL 8. Being "that person" at lunch that actually orders the salad with grilled chicken instead of the cheeseburger and fries or tortellini alfredo after eating half the bread basket 9. Realizing you actually bought a piece of clothing because you liked it and not just because it was your size 10. I had my original surgery Gastric Bypass in 2008 and it was successful, I went from weighing 345 to 190lbs, through the course of 10+ yrs I’ve had 3 children and gained weight, I went for the revision last week, from what I was told I won’t loose as much weight as when I got my original surgery... but everyone is different so I’m hopeful. surgery was Oct 16 and I went in weighing in at 237lbs as of today I’m 228... so it’s working wonderfully and I’m feeling better.

    @november11 I’m here I been posting I’m on day 3 of liver shrink diet I have 10 days and so far it’s been good not dying yet I do two shakes a day and I can have 🥬 like broccoli 🥦 cabbage 🥬 Brussels non starchy veggies is unlimited for me but mainly stuck to these cause I like them other than that I’m just ready I have pre op testing on Tuesday keep me in ur prayers I’m just ready 9 days out from surgery how are u what’s been goin on with u

    15 months post op HELP

    At least 6 months out, because the focus initally has to be on getting the nutrition in. By 6 months, I was very close to goal, but just couldn't budge the last 10-15 pounds. I think your volume capacity will determine what kind of eating window to use. If you can only eat a small amount at a time, you will not be able to get all your calories into a small window. From what I've read, for the greatest effect, the fasting period needs to be at LEAST 12 hours. 8 hours is better. Some people only eat one meal per day, which is fine if you can consume that much food all at once.
  21. Hello! This is my first time posting, I have been lurking for a while. I hope I am posing in the correct section!! I am from Canada, and was referred to the Bariatric Program in my city. I know that the USA and Canadian programs are similar in terms of requiring time with a dietitian, psychologist, internal medicine doctor etc. In April, I was booked for my first class in June. As a smoker (now ex-smoker!) I planned to (and quit) a few days before the orientation class. In the orientation class, immediately we are informed that being in the program or class isn't a guarantee of surgery (which is completely acceptable!), it is posted everywhere, and we are reminded of it pretty much all the time. I had an appointment with the Nurse case manager in August. She was great. In each appointment, you book your next appointment with another discipline you need to see throughout the program. I was then booked for a nutrition basics class for the end of August, then with the dietitian in September. The nutrition class I didn't find particularly useful (personally), as the things that we covered, I was already practicing. I was excited that the dietitian wasn't the type to roll in there and tell everyone they had to eat a certain diet. In the class (there was about 20-25 attending) she had said that they started doing the nutrition basics class because they felt that they often had to go over basics with so many people...they thought one class for everyone for the basics, and then when you meet with your dietitian, it is more individualized, and targeted to your needs. I was very excited about this, and it turned out the dietitian that was teaching the class, was who I was booked with in September. Then I rolled into the appointment in September (the day before my vacation - a cruise) for my first appointment with the RD. I feel like we immediately started off on the wrong foot. I had blood tests done (as requested) and I don't think she liked them. Everything on the blood tests were fine. Whenever I get tested for my white blood cells they come back 'slightly high', and it's been like that for years and I chalk it up to obesity, knee arthritis and the steroids I take for asthma. My family doctor is not concerned. The other thing was my triglycerides were boderline high (the rest of my cholesterol is good), and I have spoken with my doc about that and he is not concerned. She didn't seem to like that I wasn't running to my doctor about my white blood cell count. I felt like she was snippy about the triglycerides, even though my doc wasn't concerned. She looked at my food tracking (every day religiously for 6 weeks), and looked at one day. I eat 1 banana and 1 apple everyday during the work week. She started telling me about substituting berries instead of a banana. She also suggested that I walk around the buffet a few times on the cruise ship before deciding what to eat. When she asked how much wine I was going to drink on vacation (I stopped all alcohol for over a month at this point), and I said "Maybe 1 glass per day at dinner...?" that was the WRONG answer...and told me to try again. So I said...I guess 1 glass every 3 days....? Then she suggested I use smaller plates to cut my portion sizes. I left there...and my poor husband...I came home in a flurry of tears, and frustration. I didn't ask how to reduce my portions on vacation...I already know how to do that. I didn't ask her to help with with my cholesterol, I have a doctor for that. She wanted to know why I was taking Omega 3 ...and seemed skeptical of my answer that most people don't get enough, so I figure it would help to take some. I am still so discouraged by this. A few weeks ago I went to the psychologist. There was a questionnaire I had to fill out (essentially about being compliant after surgery). I told him I struggle with exercise now because of my knees...so he suggested yoga. Really? I am obese, with painful knees....if I have a hard time on the treadmill or on the elliptical, why would kneeling on the floor help...? Oh. because you do Yoga. Noted. I tried to create some discourse: The link to obesity and sleep is something I notice...I started to tell him I notice my appetite increases if I haven't slept well because it's like I need to stimulate myself to stay awake. And that turned into getting tested for sleep apnea. I don't have sleep apnea. He mentioned smaller plates to me again (it just seems out of context) So I am feeling like because I am not a total trainwreck, they don't know what to do with me. I totally get that people need more help than 'read a label', but I feel like I have spent a lot of time researching diets, weight loss, obesity etc etc for the better part of 10 or 15 years...and they have not taken the time to find out what I do know. I feel like if I say certain trigger words like 'tired' = Sleep apnea! Wine = Alcoholic! So I don't know what I am supposed to be doing. I feel like I don't know what they want from me. If they want me to lose weight, then I want them to say it. If they want me to stop this or start that, then say it, and have a purpose. I have read all sort of literature about WLS and Set points etc etc and when I go to these appointments I don't want to walk away feeling like they think I am obese because I opted for a banana instead of blueberries (hate them) all these years. I want to get more out of this, but I am also very tempted to just try and tune it out and tell them what they want to hear so I can get the surgery. I am just a number, and I somehow have to fit in their flow chart...not the other way around. Does anyone have any advice? I just feel super discouraged and criticized and not looking forward to another year of appointments every month feeling this way. Thanks for your help!
  22. I have my 3rd and final weigh in on 10/29, unfortunately this isn't the last thing i have to do before surgery. BUT I'm super excited for it and actually can't believe how quick it went by- even with some stalling from lapse in coverage with medicaid. All I have left to do after this is the endoscopy and a second visit with my nutritionist. My endoscopy can't be scheduled until after my insurance approves it on or after 11/1- which is when my lapse in coverage is officially over! My second visit with the nutritionist should have been done back in september but because of that lapse in medicaid coverage I mentioned, here I am. Still very excited to be where I am and just wanted to share.

  24. I have a Vita Mix and a really small Kitchen Aid chopper. I've use the kitchen Aid twice since 10/1 when I had my sleeve surgery. I'm not sure if I would fork out the $. However, if you can see yourself using it in the future for smoothies, or things like that, then by all means indulge.

    7 weeks post-op today

    Time is really flying! I am doing well overall. Side effects/complications from surgery were minimal. In the hospital I had 2 dry heave events that felt like I needed to happen to release some pressure/gas or something, and only a couple nausea episodes after discharge. Abdominal pain subsided pretty quickly, except for that main incision site which would have occasional stabbing pain if I moved in a way it didn't like. I haven't had that for about 2 weeks now. Incisions healed very nicely. Energy level is improving, however when I overdo it I am definitely still wiped out. I am much more awake during the day. I can stay up much later than I did before, and still rise early. I sleep better. Still on my CPAP, but I no longer take my medication to help me fall asleep and stay asleep. Haven't taken it for at least a week, maybe two weeks. I also didn't take my restless leg syndrome medication last night and was fine. Wondering if I will be able to stop taking it altogether. Not sure on that one. That leaves me with my metoprolol (for tachycardia/fast heart rate) in the AM, along with Protronix which was prescribed for me to take for 60 days. I haven't had ANY acid reflux since surgery, so once the script is up I will probably go off of it unless I start having symptoms. I think I will be fine, and doc prefers to not continue it unless necessary. Yay! And at night I have to take my Lipitor for high cholesterol, but I am going to ask my doc if I can attempt to wean off of it when I lose a little more weight. Cholesterol has been controlled for a couple of years already and losing weight and eating healthier gives me hope that maybe I won't need it anymore. Seriously, the thought of only taking my metoprolol and no other medications daily has me really excited. Diet: I am doing well, but struggling with measuring and tracking. Need to improve on that for sure! I am finding that things that are higher carbs/higher fat do not sit well with my stomach, but that is fine with me since those are things I shouldn't be eating anyway! I usually take a bite or two and then just don't want them. What can I eat? I do well with ground beef, chicken, and beans as real food sources of protein. I love them when they are in some kind of a broth. I still really enjoy my homemade chili. I made a huge batch a couple weeks post op and froze most of it... and over the last month I finally finished ALL of it off. It seems to be my most complete meal that I actually enjoy. Debating whether or not to make another batch lol... on the fence since I don't want to get sick of it, you would think I would be already! I am fine with cooked veggies but don't feel quite ready to attempt many raw veggies. I am not doing any breads, rice, pastas etc. I have had a few whole wheat crackers with tuna/chicken salad twice... but not sure how much I want to eat of that even at this point. While I have definitely felt the effects of over eating... I have NOT thrown up even once. (Thank goodness lol) Weight loss? I am doing great, although I am on my 2nd stall right now. The first stall was at 4.5 weeks and lasted probably 5-6 days. Maybe it wouldn't have lasted so long, but I was at Disney with my daughter lol. This time I think it was triggered by me ordering take out from my favorite Mexican restaurant. I ordered healthy options and took several meals to eat it... but I am sure it was loaded with salt and such. I also find that when I order something, I am having a harder time keeping my portions small like they should be. Happened at Disney (though less so) and is happening again this week. Guess I need to not order any food for a while! Anyhow... since last May, I have lost 47 pounds, with 26 of those being post op. I wish it was more, but I think I am still on par considering I started at a lower BMI. I have officially lost more than 50% of my weight to get to MY goal (and only 19 pounds away from the docs goal). And as for the BMI... only a few pounds away from being "overweight" instead of obese! I am walking at least 2 miles every day. I hope to increase to doing this twice a day.
