    The Band and Divorce

Thanks to everyone who made their commnets. I feel very sad but strong in my feelings that this is the right move for me. Hopefully, my partner will find the strength to find more satisfaction in her life and move forward with some attempt to be healthier in both her weight and outlook. I really wish nothing less for her.
  2. I track my sugar for everything!!! I eat nothing with over 5 grams, but really like to keep it 3 grams or less. It is my belief that sugar is a HUGE factor in weight loss. My pre-op diet was the Sugar Busters diet and I lost 18lbs in 3 weeks. Now I am not saying that once in a while I eat a cookie or something, but I do have my general rule that I like to follow and it has really helped me. I have lost 63 lbs since Sept. 10.

    New From SC.

Who is your doctor? How much weight do you want to lose? Do you want your guts cut up thrown away and rerouted or just portion restricted? You need to get educated on the long term side effects as well as the short term before making a decision.

    Behavioral issues.

I know many meds are affected by hormones, and those tummy hormones are now very different than before. Also I found much mood-swing stuff going on as I lost weight after the first 30 pounds, almost as if my fat were holding on to old emotional stuff, and as i got down to those later pounds it was all surfacing as I said goodbye to it. Weird-sounding as I write this, but it's how I felt in the moment! Absolutely check in with the doc who manages those meds, and maybe even email her/him ahead of time about it so to give time for a bit of pre-visit research. A psychiatric nurse may be even more helpful actually - at least from what/who I've worked with in this area of care with people. So sorry you're going through that though! I hope it begins to normalize and even out soon. Maybe keep a journal of specifics for when you talk to them?
  5. awwwww goodluck && that's a really big step to take control of your life not sure if she'll approve you earlier than 8 months but honestly sounds like she should because from what you said you have co morbidities & you have documentation of your weight loss attempts so that should help in your favor but even if you do have to wait trust me the months fly by then one day soon you'll be sleeved! once again goodluck to you<3

    What to Do...

So, today I had my first "meeting" with my phone coach from Tufts. I had to answer like a billion questions and listen to all of the program details and stuff. She had me make goals to try to meet in the next two weeks. Now I'm all for losing weight, I mean thats what this is really all about but I'm kind of on the edge of the weight limit anyway and I don't have any other co-morbidities. I'm not really sure if I should take the program seriously and try to do the stuff or if I should just lie to her considering she can't see me anyways. I really want to have this surgery and I think its going to be the best thing for me in the long run. I will even start doing this stuff after I hvae my initial consult but thats not until July! And every where else that I call has just as long of a wait until the initial appointment. I'm on a cancellation list and stuff but still thats a long time. On the other hand, the program might work for me. I don't know. I need something strict but I used to be a college athlete. I know I have some serious will power under there somewhere. I mean come on... I used to wake up at 4 am to go weight lift with the football team. Why can't I find that will power and just make it all go away?!? Why does weight loss have to be so hard and slow and emotional... And maybe I don't have that will power anymore. Maybe somewhere a long the way, life took it away. Well the get up and lift weights at 4 am part... maybe its in a different form now... maybe its me working full time and going to school so I can build medical devices that will change someone elses life... I don't know... What do I do? Follow the program and see if I'm strong enough to do it with it surgery and possibly miss the biggest opportunity I've had... or fake it and lose my last chance to do it on my own... Help!

    255 Pounds

Congratulations, Megan. That's a big deal, getting down to a teenage weight, no matter what the number is. When I was 13 I dieted down to 142 lbs. I was a big-boned 5'7" then, and my parents and the diet doctor all said I was still too fat. When I look at pictures of myself, I don't know what they were smoking! And of course I didn't stay that size for very long. . . headed straight for 200. By the way, I love your Buddha quotation.

8 days post-op, not sure if normal

Many weight loss patients cannot tolerate plain water after surgery. I know I am one of those people. I cant drink more than a swig from a bottle of water without feeling the urge to puke. I'd try adding calorie free, sugar free additives to the water to see if it helps. I drink fruit tea (caffeine free). You can also use crystal light, watered down 100% juice, lemon, or cucumber.
  9. Welcome. I wish I had an answer for you, but I do not have experience with bipolar 1. I do suffer from depression and dread seeing winter come but I'm hoping that since I have lost some weight and can actually get out and walk and feel like doing stuff, that it won't be as bad this winter. Hang in there, you've come to a good place here in this forum....don't give up....

    My Story

Hang in there!!! I know what you're going through. My doctors, four of them all said I needed to have this surgery. My mobility had gone down so bad that I needed a walker to ambulate any distance, which wasn't much at all. I, had to use a scooter if I went shopping. Other than going to work or church, I spent most of time at home. The constant pain, not being able to do the things I enjoyed, doing things with my grandchildren, and basically no quality of life, I came to a point enough was enough. I chose to live! I still need my walker when I go for walks, because my knee(s) might give out, but, I don't get out of breath, or have my back start hurting, or sweat profusely, and I've been able to shop for at least 30 minutes and not need a scooter. You hang in there and think about all the fun things you'll be able to do without the extra weight holding you back!!! I, wish you all the very best;)
  11. What did you eat over the weekend to cause the gain? Was it eating out/restaurant food? If so, my guess is that it's all water weight from the sodium in restaurant food. Just eating homemade food for 2 days should eliminate at least 4 of those pounds, if not more!

    Progress pics... :)

Great job! My starting weight is about the same, goal is 145. And my surgery is next Thursday. Glad to see what I may expect and at what time frame.

    Waiting Game

You did the pre-diet before the Insurance approval? Are you talking about the get ready for surgery two week deal, or was it a lose weight to help you qualify sort of deal?

    dizziness

Definitely sounds like blood pressure. Suggest you visit your doc for a check up. I am seeing my GP on Wednesday for exactly the same thing and am hoping to come off my last BP med. Good luck - it's a really encouraging benefit of weight loss.

    dizziness

How's your blood pressure? Very low blood pressure can cause dizziness. That happened to me. I was taking two meds for it, and my BP went so low after I was banded for awhile and had lost a lot of weight, I felt like I was going to pass out. Doctor took me completely off one of them and reduced the other, and now everything is fine. Good luck! Dave

    This means war...

6 days post op today. Yesterday, I went to the mall - to the food court, looking for won ton Soup, which i could have on my Clear liquids. Nobody had any, but I was SO JONESING for a hot pretzel, I was dying. Here is what stopped me- 1) the fear of physical damage to my baby sleeve. 2) the overwhelming feeling that I have worked too hard to get to this point. I didn't walk away empty handed, though - I treated myself to a nice cup of jasmine tea, which is a treat for me. Now, I realize that a hot pretzel is nothing like jasmine tea, but I think because I identify the tea as a treat as well (truly, I love it), I didn't feel like I was giving up *as much* in making that choice. Do you have any go-to or "treat" foods that will HELP your weight loss? If not, find some that you can swap in when needed. Also, the other poster's suggestion to carry stuff with you is spot on. I found that really amping up my Protein during preop allowed me to feel satisfied all day. Also, the longer I was able to stay away from carbs, the less I wanted them. Good luck to you. I know it's not easy.
  18. For those who have taken them, what difference did you see in your weight compared to before you started taking them? Also did your energy dramatically increase over time or immediately? Thanks

    What should i expect

With my first apt.they did height, weight. Then into another room with NUT and RN, they talked about what I ate and habits I needed to break. Onto my medication lists and problems I have, sleep apnea, copd ect... Saw the surgeon I was terrified! lol. But he talked nice explained what we were doing and asked if I had questions. I also got the 6 month PCP nut appointments and what I have to go through like psychiatrist and cardio and more. Really wasn't bad but I was there good 2 hours. Go be happy and learn all you can.

It's really amazing to see results like yours. I've had my own weight gain and loss issues but nothing like all the battles I've read about over the last two weeks. Lap-band is amazing and really happy for you. The ad is for a b4 & after, such as yours and it is for lapband411.com's future campaign. Feel free to email me a good before and after showing the dramatic change and I'll provide the model/image release form. We will be selecting the final 3 individuals by monday, next week! Best email for sending attachments is matthewbsteiner@gmail.com as it allows for large image attachments.

    Pre-op Visit

1/19/2009 After thoroughly savoring every morsel of my "last supper" at the Olive Garden last night, this morning began the full liquid diet to shrink the liver prior to surgery...the next 11 days will be limited to protein drinks & broth. Driving through one of the prettiest snow storms of the season so far (winter has just begun here in PA), I met with my surgeon, Dr Tull, this afternoon for the Pre-op visit...EKG, blood work, chest x-ray & consent forms. Everything is ready for next Friday; now it is just a matter of patience...never was my strongest virtue :-) Also took the obligatory "before" pics & measurements. UGH...but it helps knowing that this will soon be the "old" me. STARTING STATS 1/19/2009: Height 5'5" Weight 230 lbs BMI 38.3 Bust 52" Waist 43" Hip 52" Thigh 23" Calf 16 1/2" Upper Arm 17"
  22. Thank you all. I'm not sure what I'd tell my BFF. I'd be scared of losing her too. I suppose I'd tell her to go with her heart/gut. And yesterday MY gut and heart were fine. I have read about all sorts of complications up until this point and they didnt phase me. I'm not sure what happened today, it just kindof hot me out of the blue. We'll wee how I feel in the next couple of days. I still have a good 2-3 weeks before I pay my deposit and book my flight. Maybe I'm just at a point where this is turning more from excitement to readiness. I think this is just something I really need to do an ill regret it if I don't. I need to be a better mommy. A confident one. One who actually goes places and is happy. Right now I just stay in the house almost all the time. I just don't feel like being seen in public. I've lost 60 lbs alone before. Felt great but didnt stick to it and Literally gained it al back as soon As I lost it. I can't continue to live this way. Oh and hiosiergirl, my rump is rediculous too!!! Zomg!! O.o

    Bandiversary

well, I am just past my Bandiversary of 9.9.09, and quite by chance I found some notes I had made pre-LAP-BAND®. I can put a large TICK through them all:) Here is what I wrote. I I want to be healthier, and I want to prevent diabetes and other nasties. I want to sit at my desk without my stomach banging into it. I want to enjoy buying clothes again. I want to get back into my size 16 trousers. I want to look nice in dresses. I want to stop looking like a stout old trout. I want to wear skirts and not have my thighs chafing. I want to be fitter and healthier because I know my daughter worries about my health If my daughter gets married I want to look decent at the wedding. I would like to not be a fat bag when we go to Australia. I have actually managed to tick all these through. My daughter got married and I wore a fitted silk knee-length dress and looked good! I have reached my first goal of losing 60% of my excess weight. Although I am still losing, it is slow but steady. I am enjoying clothes so much more! I feel better and my self esteem has rocketed. Lets hear some more from fellow 9-09-ers.

    Depression

@@dwil I don't know that conquer is the right word but I did mostly come to terms with this new life. My children started asking me why I was mad all the time and why did I just watch TV now. So I figured I'd better try to make some changes. The changes came slowly but they did come and in the process I learned that my sanity and self worth was there all along - I had just lost my way and couldn't find it. I didn't go to a Dr or any other professional but looking back it wouldn't have hurt to do so. Your husband will have to see for himself that he's in control of his happiness. It's a hard thing to do. But he can do it and live to tell the story of how miserable he once was. I'm so sorry that you are having to go thru this. I know it sucks. If your husband thinks a professional may help him then by all means do it. Life is too short to fight a ridiculous weight battle and it's sure too short to be depressed and unhappy. Do what you need to do to get past the misery. The sun will keep coming out tomorrow and none of us need to waste a beautiful day. Keep us posted and I'd be happy to talk about all this stuff anytime you want.
