    Slippage..convert to Bypass???

Hi Lisa, I am really sorry that I am just now seeing your post. I hardly ever check the email that was linked to this forum but just changed it to the one I do use now. Anyways, I was rebanded shortly after my last post....August 2006, I think. I have not lost any weight at all since the revision...slowly putting the weight back on and not sure what I am going to do now. I weigh in at 210...my original starting weight was 235 so 25 lbs down, 25 up from lowest weight. not worth the pain and suffering from two surgeries, that is for sure! I think i am going to go to my doctor here in VA and discuss my options soon. I would really like to just take it out and live my life but I know how unhealthy I am making myself by continuing to carry this extra weight around. Let me know what you decide. I will definitely keep in touch. I know there are a lot of options out there that were not available a few years ago and I have not done any current research...had my head in the sand, I guess, but the journey continues....

    Dr. Ortiz?!?

I am having my Revision surgery with Dr. Ortiz in September. I had my LapBand with him in August 2007 and my Mom went with me... she was very impressed with the Clinic and Dr. Ortiz. He is a extremely excellent surgeon and that is why I am going back to him. He has had zero leaks with his sleeve surgery and has implemented some new procedures that other surgeons are following. He was also named in Newsweek Magazine as one of the Top 15 Bariatric Surgeons in America.... and he is a cutie! Good luck!

    All about BOOBS!

@@SunflowerGal I'm the same way! I lost about 90 lbs and yep... I got a lift and implants them gained that back PLUS! They still look awesome. I'm only 2 weeks post op from a revision but I'm worried! THAT was NOT a fun surgery. It's been about ten years for me as well soooo I know some type of plastics will be in my future. So glad I'm not the only who did this! ????
  4. Hello my name is Mary. In 2008 I had lap-band surgery. I lost about 40 pounds and that was it. I had a lapband to sleeve revision in 2012. What a nightmare it has been. I have gone from 235 pounds to 140. I was down to 120 and still losing. I was so sickly looking. I made my own protein shakes that were about 1200-1500 calories a piece to be able to gain the weight. My problem is from the moment i had this surgery I have always thrown up. I was not even able to swallow my own spit for a while. I was so dehydrated the first week I had to have IV fluids. The second week I ended up in the hospital for 8 days. Another exploratory surgery where they found a piece of scar tissue and removed it. This did not help the problem. They even tried putting me on nausea meds that they use for cancer patients with no help. I had to have a pic line in my arm for a week. I finally was able to come home. I was so weak and sick I seriously thought I was going to die. I have threw up everyday for the last 4 years. I have had barium swallows, endoscopy and my bariatric surgeon wants to convert it to a bypass. For almost 2 1/2 years I have just refused. I once again had another endoscopy this morning and the gastroenterologist and my bariatric surgeon both said that I have a curve in my sleeve and only a small amount of food is able to pass through and the rest is coming up. I am 54 years old I can not even go out to dinner with my husband to eat dinner due to the throwing up. I am looking for someone who has had the sleeve converted to the bypass. How bad was it?

    slip question

A slipped band usually causes other problems. I've read about serious reflux issues and serious vomiting issues. These symptoms often lead to the tests that render the diagnosis of a slip. Whether there are people out there with slips but no symptoms (and thus no diagnosed slips), I have no idea. I do not believe you can live with an erosion and not have the band removed. An erosion means the band has actually eroded through the wall of your stomach. As I understand it, this has to be surgically corrected in order to salvage the integrety of your stomach. Some non-severe erosions can be immediately re-banded, usually by using a different size band (often the VG when a small Inamed band had been used before) and placing it slightly differently (often slightly higher). Slips are more common than erosions, but neither are common. When I decided to be banded, I accepted the fact that there was a small chance I'd need a revision surgery at some point. Believe me, the chance of having ONE bad day (i.e. a follow up surgery) versus living every day at 300+ -- it's a no brainer which I'd choose. Hope this helps!

    Considering revision

Hernias can be repaired alongside a revision (or separate). It’s up to the surgeon if they believe it’s worth repairing at the same time as it may prolong the surgical time. IMHO choose a surgeon that has done plenty of complex cases with great outcomes. I’ve gone from sleeve to bypass albeit for GERD. Outcomes can vary greatly but discussing optimal roux limb length for the best weightloss possible with your surgeon may help. It’s entirely possible to maintain or even gain after revision to RNY. Some revision patients also experience a loss of VSG restriction because the pyloric sphincter is bypassed. Food might feel like it goes right through you if you are used to the strong restriction of VSG. Another option to inquire about is a revision to SIPS or Duodenal Switch especially if you don’t have GERD and have a significant amount to lose. Good Luck!

    Weight loss

I did have a lapband and then was revised to a sleeve Sorry about my wording
  10. Thanks. The video was a great explanation. But it brings up one more question. One of the "pluses" of the bypass, mini bypass and lap band is that they are reversible where the VSG is not. Obviously, Lapbanders get reversals and revisions all the time, but has anyone ever heard of someone actually getting their bypass reversed? Why would you? And how successful is the actual procedure? Is the GI tract impacted long term even after the reversal? I'm going to google it, but I thought I'd throw it out here.
  11. I'm not quite 7 months out and am down 92 lb.s It's a myth that revision folks don't lose much or don't lose quickly. Best of luck to you,Kim Wow Kim I am impressed and encouraged by this wonderful new! Thanks for sharing.

    Tanning Beds

Well... I am a revision from a lap band but with my lap band I put band aids over my incision sites and started tanning about 2 weeks out. The look on my surgeons face at my one month post op appointment was PRICELESS! He said "we'll this is a first" but he reassured me that it was just fine. I say cover up the incision sites and enjoy. I love the feel of a tanning bed!
  14. Welcome to VST! There are members here who have had both and I'm sure will chime in with the differences, but obviously they've revised to the sleeve, from the band, so for them I'd venture to guess there are more positives with the sleeve. I started my wls process looking and planning to get the band as well. I started reading the complication's forum on lapbandtalk.com and decided the band wasn't the best thing for my life. I won't talk about the negatives with the band or other wls (you can read the complication's forums on both lapbandtalk and obesityhelp.com) because I've never had it, but I will share with you how I thought the sleeve would be a good fit for me. -I still have a completely functioning stomach and can take pills; I'm only 30 and didn't want to restrict myself in case I needed specific medications later in life. -It's permanent; I do not ever want to gain the weight back (I realize that this is only a tool and I do have to make some permanent lifestyle changes). -I do not have to worry about extra supplementation due to malabsorption. -I do not have to worry about continuous follow-up care (fills and unfills). -At 7 months out, I now live a very normal, active life! Not saying that other procedures aren't as good. This procedure just matched my life best, and it has been one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

Completed Medicare Criteria, Next up - Surgery

That's great. I had Medicare for my sleeve surgery a year ago and had no trouble with approval. Good luck with your revision surgery.
  16. I contacted two surgeons in NY and they were both willing to remove my band and/or revise me to RNY, which I chose. My dr. is Dr. Shawn Garber, and he answers all emails within 24 hours. Perhaps he can direct you to a doc nearer to your home. his email is garber@nybariatric.com good luck,
  17. Hi Vicki. Well, I can say, I have shared your experience. I did have band slippage after my first year of lapband. Luckily insurance paid for revision surgery and placement of new band. I was crushed emotionally when it happened, but my doctor assured me he was sure I had followed all rules precisely. I am not sure what caused the slippage, but he had told me the last couple of times he had looked at it under fluoroscopy with barium swallow that it looked like I had what he called "a generous pouch" which is a sign of possible future slippage. So when was your revision for replacement? we can encourage one another here. Good luck and thanks for your post.

    Questions to ask during consultation

There are different types of weight loss surgery. The different types affect the amount of weight loss expected and the speed of weight loss. They affect the revision rate (this relates to how often one might need to have the surgery modified or corrected or adjusted or changed to another type of surgery). I choose RNY gastric bypass because it had the smallest revision rate. It also produced the quickest and deepest weight loss. Also because of a pre-existing medical condition "major acid reflux or GERD", it was the only procedure recommended for this type of condition. But it also means that I have to follow a strict Vitamin regime for the rest of my life because my body no longer synthesizes Vitamins from the food that I eat. The process of getting surgery is not simple. It has many steps. Qualifying for insurance is one of them. But then you need to undergo an evaluation by a Psychologist. There is a half day of pre-op testing to uncover any medical condition that may impact the surgery. Generally there is also a half day of classes in which almost all aspects of the surgery and meal plan and vitamin regime and exercise are covered. Many insurance plans require that you undergo a medically supervised dieting and exercise program in order to qualify.
  19. Hi Runner1, I am a patient of Dr. Jayaseelan. I am currently going through the approval process and have not gotten a surgery date yet. This will be a revision surgery for me, as I have recently experienced some complications with the Lap-Band (banded in 2006) and am looking forward to this alternative procedure. I will update when I know more.

    Long Island Surgeons ?

I had the band removed in oct 2013. Dr Castro will not do revisions in all in one surgery because he wants the scar tissue to heal. He says he gets better results that way. It didn't matter to me cuz I was still doing my whole approval process. Anyway I was afraid since the band and the sleeve were both restrictive devises I would have the same issues. Well I was sleeved on March 31 and I feel the difference immediately. I have never felt restriction like this! I love it. I am between purée and full liquids now. With purée a few bites and I am full... Like all you can eat buffet full. With full liquids I can only get in 4oz. I haven't felt this good physically in about 2 years. I am down 15 pounds since my surgery date and hopefully more when I weight in tomorrow. If 15 pounds down feel this good can't imagine how 50 or 100 will feel!

    Waiting

My information was submitted to my insurance company today for my revision from sleeve to bypass. I am praying that I get an approval fast, so ready for this surgery to work this time. I graduate in July with my BS and hoping that I am well after the surgery to walk across the stage. Praying I get approved and have the surgery in May. My surgeon stated that my insurance company takes about a month for approval praying it doesn’t take a month for approval.

    Not losing

I'm finally back to the weight I was at before I went into the hospital -- my pre-surgery weight. It took 5-days. Everything from here on in is new weight lost. Given that I'm not particularly active yet, it's OK if things don't move all that quickly -- although I hope they do. Time will tell. Band to RNY revisions don't lose as fast and I've accepted that.

    No "complications" forum?

I had complications with my revision. I will have to say that my situation is not common, and my stomach had numerous adhesions and was damaged by the band. Here's links to my story: http://verticalsleevetalk.com/tell-your-story/32-not-looking-back.html http://verticalsleevetalk.com/band-sleeve-revisions/290-home-recovering.html http://verticalsleevetalk.com/post-operation-vertical-sleeve-gastric-surgery-vsg-questions-answers/861-little-update.html There's a couple of replies in each thread detailing my entire ordeal. I was also hospitalized in mid-July due to Fluid pockets that were found in my abdominal cavity. I was hospitalized, drains placed, and rehydrated for 1 week. They concluded that the fluid pockets developed after the leak repair surgery, and some bacteria stayed in my body. I had the drains in for 3 weeks, and was just released for full activity on August 24th. My biggest hurdle that I'm struggling with right now is eating. Nothing sounds appetizing, nothing tastes really good when I do eat, and of course, my arch nemesis of Protein powders/drinks. My surgeon wants me to eat 4 small meals a day consisting of at least 15grams of protein. Problem is eggs, and cheese, deli meat disgusts me now (I ate a lot of it in the beginning) are not working for me right now. I am lucky if I eat twice daily, and I'm not getting anywhere close to 60 grams of protein per day. I just recently ordered new samples, and I have only tried 1, it didn't settle well with me at all. I have another one in the fridge chilling as I type. Hopefully, I can find something that works, I'm finding more hair in the bottom of the tub.
