Those who have had mini bypass

I had the mini bypass on Feb 23 in Mexico and am down 28 pounds as of today I went from the Lap Band and the scar tissue from the revision is the only pain I felt-- I have had very little gas and not acid reflux at all -- $7200 is what I paid but so worth it -- in the states for the same surgery they wanted $14000
  2. I'd be happy to be your pal through your journey since we are so similar. I learned a lot along the way and there are things I wish I knew more than I could've talk to somebody about Who was more my age and going through a revision . My private email is and nwhc@live.com if you ever want to communicate privately.
  3. Hi all, I need some help. Had the gastric sleeve 4 years ago last week and am regaining some of my weight back. I originally lost right at 100 pounds.. kept it that way for a few years and the last year and a half I have gained back about 35. In august I had a hysterectomy due to tumors but kept my ovaries. I went to the dr worried about the gain and she wanted to do an upper GI. Had that done this morning and Radiologist stated that I had a hiatal hernia and that is what is causing the weigh gain and the gerd. My dr has said we would look into a revision depending on what they found today. Has anyone else experienced this and if so and you went with the bypass how much weight did you lose? I don't over eat, I work out and am pretty good at sticking to what I know I can and can't eat. HW-305 Lowest-197 Currently-230

    LOVE YOURSELF VALENTINES CHALLENGE

@Hazel_eyez Congrats on reaching your challenge goal! Did you want to revise your goal for the remaining 2 weeks?
  5. Im going from a sleeve to MGB june 19th with Dr Illan in mexico. I am wondering, for those of you that are revisions, if and when did you start actuallu feeling hunger sensations again after surgery? Like real hunger pains not head hunger. TIA. [emoji5]
  6. I have acid reflux since sleeve surgery in 2012 did the MGB take care of the reflux and if so is it still under control? I am looking to have the revision in Mexico I see you used Dr. Illan was it a good experience and is he someone you would recommend. I really don't know who to use for sure in Mexico I really want to get off PPI meds and have no more acid reflux. Thanks for your time. Peggy
  7. Hi please, i just meant for OP to consider the MGB mini gastric bypass instead of sleeve. Very little reflux, very simple 40 minute operation, can be revised or reversed and you keep your stomach. Lots of ppl are getting revised from sleeve to MGB.
  8. The only thing.. are you ok with reflux. Gerd, that acid that comes up in your throat? I hear the sleeve can cause that. Have you researched MGB? Some folks are having to revise from sleeve to mgb. I am going to have the mgb after much much research.
  9. I am looking to have a revision from sleeve to MGB one due to acid reflux and not a very good loss with the sleeve. I was really disappointed in the WL but now really just want to get rid of acid reflux and get off the PPI. Also I will have to go to Mexico for the surgery anyone recommend a doctor in Mexico and did the surgery help your acid reflex?
  10. Hi Everyone I just wanted to give you all a quick update on my progress. I'm 31 days post-op from my VSG to MGB revision. I'm down 23 pounds since surgery & 29 pounds since pre-op diet(3 day plain yogurt &water). I think I'm making excellent progress considering I'm a revision patient. In speaking with dr. Ponce de leon before surgery, he decided that a 300cm bypass would work best for me considering my lifelong battle with Obesity and my previous WLS failure. I'm so glad that he did a longer bypass! After years of struggle, I feel like I'm finally going to reach my goal weight. I also started back working out last week. I would like to do it first thing in the morning, but my daily bowel movements start at 6am. I make multiple trips to the restroom. It's usually over by 730am. I'm usually safe to go the gym around 9am. BM's don't hurt(no cramping), but they do stink bad and they have the potential to travel to other rooms and linger in the air is you don't contain it with some Poo pourri. Thanks to another poster, I was able to make my own poo pourri. It works just as great! Other than that, I'm doing fine. I get lethargic from time to time, but that's normal for me. The only thing I miss is being able to gulp down Water. I truly love water. I will try to keep you all updated on my progress from time to time. I've been a part of different WLS forums for years and I hate it when people disappear after their surgery. I hope my story helps someone in their 1st surgery or Revision surgery journey.
  11. I forgot to say that mine was a revision from the band, too!
  12. I had a Vertical Gastric Banding 17yrs ago and had a lot of complications and so my doc said the only revision he would consider is the RNY. Also, if you look statistically the sleevers have a higher percentage of gaining weight back.
  13. I'm 61 and going for revision. Just don't know if sleeve or bypass is better for me. But I just don't want to retire and not be healthy enough to enjoy it. Right now I have no energy and I am sick and tired. I'm scared so any words of encouragement or your own good experience stories are so welcome
  14. Has anyone had a revision from sleeve to MGB or DS...and who is the best for revisions in Mexico?
  15. I'm pre-op with a similar issue: hiatal hernia and initially wanted the sleeve. I say initially because I've changed my mind and have decided to have the bypass. At first, I didn't want to reduce my stomach by that much. But then I read a lot of post-op sleeves have had revision surgery to bypass because their GERD became worse after a few years. My surgeon strongly recommended bypass and explained why it's better for patients with hiatal hernia. I changed my mind at the last minute....right after I was approved. Ultimately, I changed it for two reasons: 1) I don't want to have another surgery to revise anything. This is one and done for me. I don't want to risk my mild GERD getting worse. I can't imagine living life that way; and 2) even though I want this to be one and done, if for some medically necessary reason it needs to be reversed, it can be. I didn't realize that but it's true. With the sleeve, most of your stomach is permanently gone. So that's my decision about why I changed my mind from sleeve to bypass. I hope that helps but do what's best for you!

    Looking for a Twin (03/07)

I will be having sleeve to bypass on April 10 due to excessive acid reflux. Of course, I am going for the trifecta because I had a band to begin with and have already been revised once. Insurance has already approved me, but info on this is so hard to find regarding changes and weight loss expectations
  18. I plan to ask my doctors team on Monday. I had surgery on Monday the 6th. Every morning when I wake up I have this weird feeling. All I can explain it is a combination between a little nausea and like a fluttery feeling in my stomach. I'm not sure how else to describe it. Yesterday it subsided during the day unless I tried doing to much but came back at night. I am a revision from the band and pre op I was told that there was a greater risk of leaks due to the band. So I am kind of nervous. Not that I'm thinking that is the problem.
  19. Anyone know of any surgeons that do lap band replacements as a revision procedure for a slipped band? I'm trying to find a surgeon to do a consult with to talk just replacing my band that slipped a couple years ago and I had unfilled (no complications just preventative unfilling). insurance coverage isn't an issue and neither is location; though i'd prefer a surgeon in the US or Canada.
  20. Hello All - I'm trying to identify surgeons who have done replacement bands as a revision procedure. I had a slippage (with no complications) a couple years ago and had my current band (it's an original model, 260 degree) unfilled as a preventative measure for any complications from the slippage and to give me time to decide how i wanted to proceed. I was highly successfull with the band until the slippage, which occurred after the band was overfilled on refill. Since have it unfilled in early 2015, i've slowly gained weight back and have decided I want to fix the issue by having the old band removed and a new band placed. (i've read the research on types of revisions and weighed various options and a new band is best for me). I am trying to identify suregons in the US or Canada that do lap band removal/replacement surgeries and googling has let me find any specific offices to contact and I thought I would ask here before I start cold calling bariatric surgeons. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations of suregons that do removal/replacement of lapbands? Insurance coverage is not an issue; nor is travel, though I prefer a U.S. or Canadian surgeon just for convenience. Ideally, I'm looking for a surgeon with experience in band removal/replacement surgeries. But I'm open to suggestions of any one I may be able to schedule a consult with to discuss it. Thanks!
  21. How can you speak about the reality of somebody elses situation being "so much easier to manage those things" rather than the complications the surgery "might" cause? Clearly you have had issues with your own revision based on your numerous negative comments all over this forum - and I am truly sorry that this is the case for you. But surely you realise that the complications you are experiencing are felt by a small minority of patients and is not the norm? Everybody I know, and from all feedback Ive read regarding patients who have had revision - they wish that they did it years ago rather than putting up with food blockages etc with the band.
  22. I'm 9 months out and haven't had much of an issue with heartburn. I get it if I'm eating/drinking too many acidic things, but it's not often. I take a Prilosec and then i'm perfectly fine. On the actual topic, I had Dr. Illan and it was the best experience I've had with a doctor. I was terrified going. I wasn't a revision patient, but it's nerve wracking either way. Specifically BECAUSE there is no guarantee. There is a risk no matter who the surgeon is or where it takes place. As long as you've mitigated the biggest part by finding a good surgeon, you significantly lower that risk. And you have! Dr. Illan is amazing.

    VSG to RNY Revision

I can't speak from direct experience since I haven't had that revision done (yet) though such a procedure is on the table as there are differing opinions on my particular issues. A second (and even third) opinion is a good thing to get when considering a revision, particularly when it is due to some complications. One of the dynamics that exists in the bariatric world is that most surgeons have more experience doing bypasses than sleeves, so there is some natural inclination for many of them to revert to their comfort zone and go bypass when things get complicated. Most are sufficiently competent making sleeves these days (more so than 5-6 years ago when it was just starting to get routine insurance approval,) but the lingering question is how good is any particular surgeon at correcting problematic sleeves. Is a recommendation for a revision really the best solution for a particular problem, or is it merely the most convenient for the surgeon? Certainly, there are situations where a bypass is the correct solution and the trick here is to find whether or not that is your particular case. A second opinion from a surgeon who is deeply experienced with the sleeve would be a good start. I often use the DS as a starting point in establishing VSG experience as the DS is based upon the VSG and has been performed for some 30 years now, so those longer tenured DS surgeons tend to have a lot more specific sleeve experience than the average bariatric surgeon. (and there are a few who broke off from the DS world early on to specialize in the sleeve.) Further, a good number of them get involved in some of the more complex revisions (like RNY to DS) so are more capable than average in correcting sleeve problems. I have been rather impressed with readings and conversations that I've had over the years that as a group, while they may prefer the DS as their primary offered procedure, they have no problem recommending a bypass when it is the appropriate solution to a patient's problems. While DS docs tend to be fairly few and far between, there are several good consult prospects in the bay area. They are well worth seeking out for that second opinion. We can PM if you want to discuss further details. Good luck in getting this resolved.
  24. I read it and appreciate it. You might save someone's life, too. I am doing so well, as you, so how easy could it happen to anyone of us, this year or five years from now. The lesson=Growing pain in stomach=see surgeon immediately! Gratz on being your own advocate and getting them to fix you! I hope the revision works.
  25. I will say that 3 years into being revised, I love the sleeve. Life is pleasantly different from banded life. Even with battling GERD, I have no regrets. Everything will go well and you will be much happier afterward. Let us know how it goes. jake
