Hi to all fellow UK sleevers
chilo1 replied to YORKSHIRE GIRL ANGE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Welcome on board Yorkshire Girl, you won't regret your journey at all! I had my op nearly 3 months ago here in Newcastle upon Tyne, had to self pay though, because I was last in priority list for the NHS so would have to wait for about 18 months. My surgeon, Mr Small (who also does the bariatrics for NHS Sunderland) was fantastic, as was the rest of his team. I too did the milk based diet, which was fine cause I love yogurth. My Dr said the same, a bit of fish or chicken would be fine if I was desperate, but in the end I stuck to the diet, was a bit hungry but I was so focused that it was fine. My consultant told me that my liver was "beautiful" that he had never seen a healthier and lovielr liver, so it was worth the hard work. I'm halfway to my target weight and very very happy. I wont recommend you to go on myfatsecret.com to track your calories, it's really helpful, the best of luck to you! -
I have been preparing for my surgery for months, and my little sister has been very supportive. She is also very heavy, and has been taking Phentermine for a few months. She had a check in with her primary doctoday and told the doc the meds aren't doing anything for her. She asked for information about bariatric surgery and was told by her doctor that it is a cosmetic procedure that most insurance won't pay for!!!! I'm utterly shocked! When my sis said she isn't interested in a bypass but a sleeve, the doc then told her it's not called a sleeve, it's called a lap-band. I told my sis I would be looking for a new doctor. That shocked me!!

New to the process
catwoman7 replied to Texaschick09's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
no regrets at all - I'd do it again in a heartbeat. In fact, I'd do it every year if I had to! I've never heard of any correlation between WLS and pancreatic cancer. Most people have no complications at all or only minor ones that are easily fixable. And I've never heard of people getting pancreatic cancer from it. Once in a great while you'll hear of something like a bowel obstruction (this would be considered a major complication, but fortunately, it's very rare), but cancer, no. I've never heard or read about that anywhere, and I've been pretty active in the bariatric community for the last six years. On the other hand, I was facing all kinds of complications when I weighed 373 lbs, including an early death, most likely. WLS very likely saved my life. -
No longer “OBESE”, small goal reached
Breaking notsobad replied to Fred in Pa's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
@Fred in Pa Hey Fred. I am still pre-op. Congratulations - it seems like small milestone to some but I'd take it with a smile. According to the bariatric surgeon I am morbidly obese. I try to not take that personally. I think it has something to do with the insurance. I'm also having the duodenal switch probably later this summer or September and so I will follow your progress.. -
How long after RNY can you stop reflux meds?
toodlerue replied to mrsjo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For me it’s forever 😑 I had a RNY to correct a failed (12 years old) surgery to fix my hiatal hernia. Before RNY my esophagus was L-shaped and half of Diaphragm was above where it. Lately I have also been having to take Pepcid to control the reflux. I need to find a new bariatric Doctor Who can monitor me. Because of the reason that I had the bypass my surgeon was not a bariatric doctor he actually told me to get all of my information about the surgery and what needs to be done after in my lifestyle changes from the Internet I also need to find a Gastrologist because pills are getting hot when I swallow them just like they did before the bypass. I think my esophagus needs to be stretched again. I’m very sad about all of this because I was told that by having the bypass it would fix all of my problems permanently. Losing 70 pounds was a big plus out of it! -
Congrats.I have surgery on the 15th.My preop appt with surgeon is the 8th.I will also meet with the bariatric nurse that day to.She will go over my post op diet.

I also went to this site referenced above and read all the fine print. I noticed that under the section marked "Public Comments," this comment and rebuttal was printed: "Comment: Another commenter agrees with the changes as well but recommends that the list of obesity-associated co-morbidities be a complete, inclusive list to prevent inappropriate denial of service. The commenter goes on to state that covered procedures should include the laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy and duodenal switch procedures.Show citation box Response: We appreciate the suggestion that morbid obesity multiple co-morbidities be a complete, inclusive list and will consider it as one of many recommendations in revising the benefit policy. We disagree with the commenter's suggestion that vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) should be covered under the TRICARE Program. The evidence evaluating the safety and efficacy of BPD/DS and VSG do not meet the program specific standards of reliable evidence. Existing data does suggest the use of these procedures is a possible benefit to some patients but there is incomplete information to predict the effect of long-term outcomes. This lack of information relating to the long-term outcomes is a matter of concern to the Department. Medical literature indicates as well that well-controlled trials are needed to determine both short-term and long-term safety and efficacy of BPD/DS and long-term (> 5 years) weight loss and co-morbidity resolution data for VSG. The Agency will continue to monitor the development of the literature and the status of ongoing well-controlled clinical trials regarding the effectiveness of the laparoscopic VSG and BPD/DS procedures. At such time when the reliable evidence demonstrates that these bariatric surgical procedures have proven medical effectiveness, the Director, TMA will initiate action to cover these procedures." I have placed a call to Ms. Gail Jones, who is the contact person for this information. She was not in, but I left a message for her to call me back. When I get anything definitive regarding the possible coverage of VSG, I will post it here.

Can you please share the name and location of your MTF? I am in Biloxi, MS and as far as I am aware, Keesler AFB's 81st Medical Group at Keesler Medical Center no longer has a Bariatric department due to cutbacks. Thanks in advance Shae

HELLO! my husband is active duty army and tricare did allow me several referrals to civilian doctors for the vsg surgery. i lived in washington dc at the time and they were trying to phase out the program at walter reed (since they are closing it down) and they were building a new hospital on fort belvoir that would include a new bariatric center so that only left bethesda for the whole area and they were on a 8 month to a year wait list to get into the seminar and into the program. it was a pain! i went through 6 referrals to civilians and didn't find one surgeon that i liked. i started to get very discouraged. well i called bethesda and spoke with the bariatric coordinator and discovered that due to the long wait list and the amount of pcs moves that familys in the military make the wait list was much shorter. so i got into the seminar and met the surgeon at bethesda and loved him. he was so personable and kind. the dc area is very different than other areas for weight loss surgery. it took me a year to get all my appointments done and have surgery. i almost didnt get my surgery due to a pcs move. we moved in june and my surgery was in august. i convinced my doc that i would be able to stay in dc until he cleared me to go home to az and after many long talks and emails we made it work. i am now 5.5 months post op and i have lost 85 pounds since surgery and 35 pre op. i still have another 40 or so to go but i will say that this is a fight that i am glad i didnt give up on! best of luck to you!

6 month diet......before surgery.....
diamondpaisley2 replied to bunchlane1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm currently in the 6-month diet phase as well. My bariatric doc wants me to lose 20lbs before surgery so i decided toput the two requirements together. I have to say, I'm worried I won't lose enough by the end of the 6mo. I've lost more than 20 in the past (& gained it back) but this feels like my whole life depends on it! I'm determined to do it though. Good luck to you & ill be looking out for your updates! -
YOUR THOUGHTS: BariWise Protein Potato Chips
LadyMaggie replied to LadyMaggie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well, they do sell them at my lap band surgeon's office; my nutrionist recommends them; but they are $2.00 for a small bag. They are made for bariatric patients --- these are NOT regular potato chips. I am looking for the best flavor and best value if I am going to buy them -
Anyone Gone To Mexico Alone For Surgery?
realwmnhavcurvs replied to NJsharon's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi NJsharon I am from NJ as well, II chose Dr Ortiz at the obesity control center in Tijuana. His facility is ICE certified ( international circle of excellence), wich mean they meet the highest standards of care. He is also a full member of the American society for metabolic and bariatric surgery. He has also trained a lot of doctors here in the states. His credentials are great and from what I can find a very low to zero complication rate. -

Hiatal hernia Repair & Gastric Sleeve?
nocturnalgemi replied to MamaAsh32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I forgot one more reason why I changed my mind: my surgeon says hiatal hernia can recur after VSG. I asked about just doing a surgery after VSG to fix the hernia. He says hiatal hernia is a much more serious (I guess as in higher risk) surgery than bariatric. So there was that. -
Dr Korman in Marina Del Rey. 1-800 491-1977. LA bariatric center. I love him. Had a last minute insurance problem so I couldn't do it. After all the fees I paid to Owens, I should have just stayed with Korman.

November Sleevers
laguerr13 replied to brittneywlsj's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Pea523: I was having trouble with my protein the first month BEFORE surgery, both with getting enough, and my financial situation, as time went on the more I educated myself I became a much better shopper, on average I now save between $150-200 every 2 months by buying comparable bariatric products through alternative sources, but my favorite is the "Body Tech" protein from The Vitamin Shoppe, I pay $49.00 for the 5# can and it gives me 72 servings (that's about 2 1/2 months worth) I buy the 24g protein chocolate, so if money is not an issue you can break it down into twice a day giving you 48g of protein, I also do weight training at the gym 3 times a week so I will always need to supplement, I put mine in a shaker bottle with about 3-4oz of water and it takes me 3-4 minutes to drink it, but I also learned a cool trick from one of the body builders who knows about bariatrics, 1 scoop chocolate protein I packet instant coffee(non- caffeinated) 2 tablespoons non- dairy creamer 1 packet sweetener Ice 1 cup vanilla silk Mix in blender Awesome Starbucks alternative and a nice treat once in awhile, also try to make 1oz packets of cashews, or beef jerky and cheese and carry it with you to get protein throughout the day...... -
Now Dr Chin doesn't have great bedside manner but he's an amazing surgeon. He mainly is an ER trauma surgeon and he does bariatric two days a week. So I trusted him a lot. Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal

I just had a BRILLIANT idea! (I know, no shocker there!)
OKCPirate replied to LipstickLady's topic in Rants & Raves
JUSTIFY ME ---to---> MOLLIFY ME---to---> ADVISE ME GENTLY---to---> GIVE ME **REAL** FEEDBACK---to---> KICK MY ASS IF NEED BE This would be a cool tool. But as co-laborers in helping one another succeed, you need a deep tool kit and have the discernment to know which tools to use and where to use them (almost always privately): For some, listening ears and a gentle word in the moment of weakness (Proverbs 25:11; 25:20). Others, a sharing in weakness, doubt and failure; and the hope of renewal (Proverbs 15:2; 19:11). Certain others, the hard face and stern challenge (Proverbs 27:17). Occasionally, reprimand or reproach (Proverbs 9:8,17:10). For each of these, your goal is restoration of the person and, as quickly as possible, a continuation of the work. However, when necessary, you must separate and terminate (Proverbs 14:7). These are tools of leadership and healing; like a doctor’s tools, they should be used for the good of the others always, the patient if possible and never for yourself. Never. I have reaped the bitter fruit of my own failure to heed this last point many times. -
My first appt. was with the bariatric doctor in April and I had one in May, June and July. I didn't go to a PCP (didn't have one) until June and she sent me for the blood work and did the EKG, etc. She also signed the required letter stating she recommended me for the surgery. Keep in mind, if your insurance is like mine, you have to have 90 days elapse between the 3 physician visits before submitting. For example, you can't go for the first on June 30th, next on July 30th and last on August 1st. I am thinking you will have to submit in Sept which is right around the corner. My surgery is tomorrow. Woo Hoo! Good luck to you and stay positive!

How long from begining till surgery
Taradawn15 replied to MGLAW142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my sleev done through tri care at Ft Lewis. It took me about 3 months to meet all the requirements and schedule my appt. that being said ft Lewis serves a about of military and the bariatric program actually had a waiting list. Once I got through the waiting list part it took me about 6 weeks to get in all required apps and do a 4 week food journal that I was required to do before hand. -
I know it's not much, but I'm excited to say that I have taken the first step, officially! I spoke to my general family doctor today and asked for a referral to a surgeon. I had already picked out where I wanted to go, based on references from a couple of friends, and research that I had done on my own. But something that I didn't know prior to reading the brochure I was given today, is the surgeon I have chosen, is in a Center of Excellence for Bariatrics! YAY! I was a bit disappointed though, thinking that this would be the first of my 6 month medically supervised diet. Turns out, the bariatric center works closely with a weight management center. So they want all of their patients to go with the weight management center for their diets, and they walk you through the process and all the hoops that the insurance makes you go through. This program though, costs $120, which covers education, materials, and other miscellaneous stuff. Insurance pays for the appointments though. So that's not too bad, but still... ugh. So, I'm on my way! I think I impressed my doctor though. I don't think she was prepared for me to know so much already about the surgery, the options (Lap band VS Bypass), and the lifestyle changes required before and after surgery. Next step is to call the Bariatric Center and get scheduled for a Seminar and follow up appointment! I also got a prescription for Wellbutrin to help me stop smoking. So wish me luck with that! Oh, and I've lost 6 pounds this past month! YAY ME!

Has anyone tried the unjury shakes I keep seeing advertised here on Bariatric Pal?

I have been thinking a lot about how I want not only my stomach size to change, but that i want my dietary habits to completely change for the better. I believe in the power of habits and I need to use this tool to break many or most of mine. I have been thinking about how I eat but also about how my kids eat, age 2 and 5. My son is five and is a very picky eater and very slim. His favorite food is an apple! My daughter is 2 and she is already a little plump, and she will eat anything you put in front of her and is a sweets aholic. I don't want then to have a weight problem one day and suffer the way I have. For a long time I have worried about their diet. We eat family well, mostly whole food without any fast food usually, we don't drink soda and barely ever drink juice We eat out occasionally but mostly eat from home. The meals I make are fairly carb heavy but my kids usually prefer to eat the Protein unless it is spaghetti or pizza. We eat things like stew, chicken Soup, pizza, grilled cheese, tacos, spaghetti, lasagna, hamburgers, eggs, etc. We eat a lot of desert sweets. We love to eat ice cream, cake, Cookies, fudge, candy, etc. we eat tons of it. I want to take refined super totally off our menus and out of our house. I also want to eat only lean protein and whole grain, unprocessed carbs, increase our vegetables and cut out pizza and juice altogether. I don't mind the kids eating wheat bread but I won't post surgery. I'd like to replace the Desserts with fruit or yogurt or take them out entirely- which do you think is better? Is it easier to just go cold turkey and stop doing dessert? I was raised eating desert and I find I am programmed to crave sweets after eating. I was to undo this habit and not give it to my kids. I also want to eat my last meal of the day by 6, 6:30 and be done for the day. I've though about writing out some meal plans for us to follow for the first few months and would love suggestions. Also, my kids take food to to school with them and I need ideas for healthy lunches that don't involve processed carbs. Do you all think this is possible? Any advice? I'm worried my sweets cravings are going to make me miserable. I also found a link to a bariatric food pyramid. Pretty awesome!!! http://www.drsharma.ca/obesity-the-bariatric-food-pyramid.html
