    Not losing Weight

    I have no idea what your stats are (start weight, etc) and that is pretty important to this discussion. To answer your question, I lost 11 lbs in the two week pre op diet, and then 15 lbs in the first month post surgery. I lost most of that the first week after surgery, but I did not have the water retention issue most people have in the first few weeks post surgery. My meds helped prevent that. Your loss sounds good and in fact probably on the higher end but hard to say without more information. We all know that human bodies don't work linearly, but even so mathematically it is unlikely people will lose 3+ lbs a week every week. I gave a rough example below of why that is. The estimated baseline daily calories needed for a 380 lb woman, roughly where I started, is 2400 calories if I don't do any movement. Let's say early post surgery I am eating 700 calories/day. That gives me a daily deficit of 1700, which amounts to 11,900 calories a week. A pound of weight loss needs around 3500 calories of deficit (through food and exercise) so even in the best case scenario, an 11,900 deficit results in a 3.4 lb loss. As you get lighter, MBR reduces. So, now I am about 278 lbs. My estimated basal MBR is roughly 1900, but now I am eating around 1400-1500 calories a day, per my program. Let's assume it is 1400 to make my math easy, then my total calorie deficit all week is 3500, which should equal one pound. That's a huge difference from where I started. Disclaimers: This example is just that - an example - and I would not take it for gospel or base any decisions on it. It's just meant to show that folks shouldn't think they are going to lose 5 lbs a week. Like I said, my estimates above use an estimated MBR that does not take into account exercise so it may be off, but it's just meant as an example. I also don't think weight loss is as easy as "calories in, calories out" as we all know metabolism is affected by many other factors, some of which we probably do not understand yet. I don't want the example above to in any way encourage people to start cutting back even more calories - that's not healthy long term and it can have devastating effects on your metabolism and health long term; that's why so many programs now push getting your calories up quickly. I'll also add that once you start adding in serious exercise, you do need to increase your calories or it can have the opposite effect of what you are aiming for - you can't expend 5000 cals a day and only eat 500 calories and expect healthy outcomes.

    Not losing Weight

    thats fine... soon you will hit your 3rd week stall where you wont loose anything at all for a while. May even gain a pound or so. We all loose differently... Me personally right now i am averaging around 8lb a month and i am 6 weeks post op.

    Not losing Weight

    It really is different for everyone. I lost a ton of weight really fast. Like 30 pounds in 2 weeks kind of fast. Then I had a stall for 2 weeks, and now I'm losing sloooooooow. Like really slow. I'm still losing, but now it's like 3-4 pounds a week.
  5. I have thought about weight loss surgery for a few years and seriously for a year now. I've been overweight for over 20 years, and in the last nine years I have gained around 44 pounds. Currently I'm around 80 pounds overweight with a BMI of 37. Like so many here, I've tried so many things to lose weight. Meal replacement shakes, weight loss club, exercise, different kinds of low carb eating etc., with diminishing results. The last time I lost any significant amount of weight was almost decade ago, when I was pregnant with my son. I lost about 22 pounds from before I was pregnant, but I gained it back double in the years that followed. I was at my highest weight in 2019, and since then I've managed to lose and gain the same 10-15 pounds several times. Before I was a mom, I used to exercise regularly, but as a new single mom with a full time job, I didn't have the time. I started with a low carb diet four years ago and started exercising in a gym a year after that, but then covid came and all the gyms closed. I started having blood pressure problems at the end of 2019, and it has gotten worse since. I'm now on two different medication for blood pressure, plus Metaformin for blood sugar. I got covid last winter and after that my stamina is a lot worse, so I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle I keep losing. I have the money to pay for surgery, if I go overseas to have it. I'm in northern Europe and am considering two private hospital in Eastern European countries. I guess I'm afraid of complications, of dying and of not getting the desired results. A part of me feels I should just be able to exercise and do keto to lose the weight, but I've tried it so many times and failed. As I said, I'm a single mom and want to live a long and healthy life for my son, who does not have another active parent in his life. I've only told one friend that I'm considering this surgery, but I hesitate to tell my family. I'm the only overweight person in my family and I'm not sure they'll be supportive. Did anyone else struggle this much with deciding to have surgery or not, and what finally helped you to decide?

    Not losing Weight

    5 lbs in a week is pretty good - think of it this way, if you lost 5 lbs every week that's 250 lbs in a year! Of course that can't really maintained, and some weeks will be more and some will be less. Everyone's numbers are different, as long as the weight keeps going down that's all that matters.

    Losing weight except Belly!!

    Generally, it all depends where you carried your weight. You’ll lose weight all over but if you carried a lot in your tummy, this will take the longest to lose because you have more fat to lose there. If you carried more in your thighs & hips, this will be the area that seems to be the hardest to shift & will take longer to notice the difference. It will happen, just give it time.
  8. As @catwoman7 said it could be related to all the craziness of your weight loss. Hormones & other things being released from your fat as you’re losing throwing your levels out. My cholesterol & liver function rose when I was losing then settled in the healthy range early in my second year. As for the ferritin levels it could just be you & you sit at a little higher level. You wont really be able to tell until your weight & everything else stabilises. If it is still high then, you can give blood. That’s how people with naturally high iron levels (hemochromatosis) manage it. But of course check with your doctors. Do you take an iron supplement? If so maybe chat with your surgeon to see if you can reduce it (like once every two days). Generally if your surgeon isn’t worried, you can breathe easily.

    Not losing Weight

    some people don't lose ANY weight the first week. A lot of us come home from the hospital up to 10 lbs heavier due to the all the IV fluids they pump into you. that said, 5 lbs is pretty normal. Most WLS patients (at least normal ones - not the kind who are on "My 600 lb Life) lose in the 15-25 lb range the first month. So 5 lbs in week one is pretty normal.

    Not losing Weight

  11. I'm a newbie so maybe I am obsessing about nothing but I am about 2 weeks post-op and losing weight as expected. I'm not worried about the scale too much but I am so tired of the big middle I had and the thing is - it's still there!! The inches seem to be dropping everywhere EXCEPT my stomach. WTH? Is this normal? is the weight around your middle the last to go? This is depressing.
  12. I track, but every now and then I'll have a "holiday" from tracking. I usually end up gaining 2-3 lbs. over a week or two, and as soon as I start tracking again, it goes back down. (I'm just finishing one of these "holidays".)
  13. Here's what I do. I hate tracking but I've been doing it consistently now for 2 years and that's a big deal for me. I still don't like it but it helps me see I'm making good choices and getting enough protein. At the same time, I DO eat when I'm hungry and I'm not extremely strict about calories. If I'm hungrier one day I eat more that day and I always ask myself if it's head hunger or actual hunger. The other thing I do is take a day off every week or so where I don't track, but I still listen to my hunger signals and make healthy choices. It just gives me a break from tracking. This has worked well for me for 2 years now and I haven't had any real gains and have consistently lost and am still losing, albeit very slowly now.   14. I have NEVER, ever in my life worn smaller than a large, even at my thinnest. Back when I was this weight ok the 90sb I think sizes were a little smaller than they are now. I bought some shorts recently at Walmart and I got large. They fit OK but are big around the legs. I really liked them though so I went back for more and got a medium. I thought there is no way these will fit and I was shocked that they're perfect. A MEDIUM. Even if it is vanity sizing, I'll take it! I have never worn a medium anything in all my 50 years!   15. I just checked - ALK phosphate is also a liver enzyme. I wouldn't worry about that. Liver enzymes are usually high for about a year after bariatric surgery. It's because rapid weight loss is hard on livers. It'll stabilize in about a year when your weight loss slows down.
  16. my ferritin is always high...occasionally over 200. They've never mentioned any issues with it. It's just stored iron that your body uses when it's getting low. At most they may have you cut back on a bit on your iron supplement. I don't think I've ever had my ALK tested - just my liver enzymes (ALT and AST). my MPV and RDW are also usually high - again, they've never said anything about it. most people lose their hunger for the first few months after surgery - and it almost always comes back. Mine came roaring back at five months out. Milk that for everything it's worth. It'll never in your life be easier to lose weight than it is right now - when you're not hungry and don't give a flip about food. I wish my hunger had never come back.

    My doctor said it was based on your medical history/weight/BMI and your chances of getting clots. Some are good to go, up and walking is enough, some require pills, higher risk is the shots. I had the shots while I was in the hospital overnight stay, and then I was released without any blood thinners.

    Food Before and After Photos

    I have a cast iron pizza pan that I use as a griddle. (It never leaves the stove top and is used at least once a day.) I heat it to 500 degrees or so. I spray the steak with an olive oil spray, then put it on the griddle with a weight on it. Thirty seconds on each side with the weight gets a pretty good sear, but not quite a crust. I usually cook them at 124 degrees, so if it's a thick steak it's still a long way from medium after 30 seconds a side. Since my surgery, we never eat more than 3.5 ounces each. Sliced and artfully arranged on the plate, a rare steak is pretty beautiful. A steak house would be soaking it in butter. I generally leave that off. I have a torch, but I've never used it.
  19. I tried to smoke a joint in the first week post to deal with surgery pain cuz I didn’t want to take my pain meds. The resulting coughing fit (and stomach pain from the coughing) put an end to that real quick! About a year later i tried again and was fine. Im back to my normal rate of usage (like once every couple months) with no issue. Bonus points: I don’t get the uncontrollable munchies anymore! If i do feel munchy, its easy to ignore 💪🏼 P.S. No, i dont have a medical marijuana card, and Yes, its legal up here now, lol. P.S.S. I also drink/drank regularly (pre and post op), but only started drinking regularly again after weight loss phase. During weight loss phase I probably had about 5 partial drinks in total the entire time. P.P.S. I also smoke (cigarettes), which i am half-heartedly trying to stop. Sigh.
  20. I don’t track calories. It makes me obsessed. Towards the end of the day, if I still have calories available, I feel like I want to spend them (eat) even though I may not be hungry. If I don’t have calories available, I feel deprived and starved, even if I am not totally hungry. I do track protein and fluids, although not in a written or digital sense. Over time, I have figured out what certain foods have, and I just stick to the same basic foods most days, for breakfast and lunch. It is reliable for me and has worked for a long time. Dinner is always different because I eat with family. I am really enjoying the freedom of not tracking, and losing weight at the same time! It feels the most sustainable. However, I know everyone is different so do what works for you!
  21. Hello, I'm trying to find out if insurance will reimburse for Mexico surgeries, as out of network? my insurance covers the surgery in the US. I am trying to avoid the 6mo wait and pre-op testing and screening as I've already gone through it. I went up to my pre-op appt the week before surgery and had to cancel because I got sick. I had to recover, lost weight on my own and here I am 80lbs heavier just wanting to get through it but they are making me start from day 1. thanks!
  22. It's ok to go back and forth as much as you need. You are in control of what happens to your body. Until you are 100% sure that surgery is what you want...don't do it. I have thought about bariatric surgery for over 10yrs. Each time I convinced myself I could lose weight without surgical intervention. My last attempt was on a Dr.'s lead weight loss program. I lost 20lbs then went thru a really bad emotional rough patch and gained back the 20lbs and found another 25lbs. The only time you can't change your mind is after the surgery is done. You are doing what is best for you.

I had my initial appointments scheduled with my surgeon, the dietician and my psych eval, had cleared things with insurance, then got really cold feet and decided I wasn’t going through with it. Well this past week I had another new weight related health diagnosis that shouldn’t be something a 31 year old should be diagnosed with, my weight is still climbing, got told by two different doctors they won’t treat my pain because it’s my weight causing the pain, so I’ve emailed my coordinator at Dr. Houston’s office and plan on calling Monday to get appointments back on the schedule. I guess I just need some reassurance that it’s ok to go back and forth with commitment in the beginning?

  25. Whenever I haven’t tracked food or weight then I’ve crept up in my numbers. Im going to keep tracking to my goal and beyond. I used to have a travel heavy job and my go to was those little packs of nuts. And those awful clif bars but I don’t recommend those!
