  1. Tutornmom~ That is a great NSV! I hear ya on losing and regaining the same 15lbs over and over. Isn't it nice to be on a road that will help us with permanent loss! Michelle~ Thanks! I am also hoping that it sticks! Crossing my fingers and praying! It would be nice to lose a few more pounds.
  2. tutornmom, I think that is a great NSV and I'm SURE that's why no loss. I'm on HTC for my BP as well and whenever I forget to take it, I gain 2lbs. Every. Single. Time. I'm hoping to be able to stop mine soon but I'm just now finally keeping it in the normal range with the meds. It's one reason I really started thinking about surgery. With the HTC it was still a little too high. I was looking at more meds soon and just didn't want to go there. I also have major heart/BP history on BOTH sides of my family so I'm probably behind the 8-ball anyway but am doing all I can to at least be healthy as I can be. I am absolutely thrilled for you! I'm in a contemplative mood with my 1 year coming up. It's just amazing to me, this last year. I haven't lost a lot but I am happy to be where I am. Especially when I look at where I was! If I hadn't had surgery, I would've gained. Before surgery I had been playing with the same 4lbs for the better part of a year! I'd be on more BP meds, I could hardly walk with my bone spurs, my back hurt (still does sometimes but it's WAY better!), and on and on and on. Today I turn 41 and without surgery, I would be MISERABLE! Now, I'm excited about how I'm feeling and looking. Just amazing to me. Absolutely amazing!

    Starting Zumba

I've been doing Zumba a few times a week for a while... and I'm by no means skinny. Gyms and exercise classes are not just for skinny folks. If you find a gym that has that attitude.. change gyms!! Zumba is lots of fun. And depending on the instructor and the type of Zumba class you take, the intensity can vary greatly. There's regular Zumba, Zumba Gold (designed for lower impact), Aqua Zumba (Zumba done in the pool), etc. I'm like Hynita, I modify the steps to what I can comfortably do.. and as I get stronger, I try to do more. When the instructor Jumps, I usually jog or march in place. When they do a side step with twisting the knees.. I just side step and don't twist. The important part is to move the body and have fun!! One of the instructors where I go has even bought hip scarves with the little coins on them for one of the songs which is from "Sumdog Millionaire" "Jai-Ho (You are my Destiny " The scarf meets in the middle on the other gals, but not me. Oh well, I'll use that as a NSV when it does meet!! This isn't the class I attend, but it's the same choreography that my instructor uses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r43YzeBfWug LOVE this routine. I encourage you to go and give it a try.. it's so much fun. Like the Zumba site says.. Ditch the Workout, Join the Party! (I still workout too though.. lol).
  4. hi all! had a really great day yesterday and wanted to share it with you all I LOVE theme parks. one of the things I used to look forward to most each year was going to six flags. I haven't gone in years though because when I was 18, one of the most humiliating things of my fat life happened--I got kicked off 3 different coasters because I was too big for the harnesses. talk about a reality check. so I've been too scared to go back until now. I went yesterday (with my new boyfriend, which is also a cool thing that happened the day before we went) and was so nervous it would happen again, especially in front of him on our first date being "official" without him being super aware of my weight history yet, that I almost canceled at the last minute. I'm proud to say that not only did I fit on every single coaster we rode (including all 3 I was kicked off of last time!), but I comfortably fit without the embarrassing thigh spillover or being practically on top of the person next to me it sounds like such a normal thing but I'm so proud of the progress I've made. ^ also, dug out an old t-shirt I bought at my previous lowest adult weight which at the time was a perfect fit. now its a bit loose and I can wear this hoodie I bought when I was 13 with it

wisdom you wish you knew prior to surgery

I agree with what everyone has said here but to add to the list: You will have some sort of port incision pain and it may be hard to sleep because of it. Do not be afraid to ask for pain meds to take before bedtime because they will help ALOT. You may become cranky due to lack of food and you may feel hunger, just drink lots of fluids and the hunger-pangs will go away. The crankiness will subside eventually too. The doctors, nurses and people here will tell you to walk as much as you can. DO IT! It'll make you feel loads better. Take measurements and photos before surgery. You will lose inches even if you don't lose pounds. These make for great NSVs (Non scale Victories) Buy a magic bullet.. the best thing to make your shakes in. Try different brands of Protein, they aren't all bad. Follow the doctor's post-op instructions.. he/she knows whats best for his/her patients. :Dancing_biggrin: Good luck on your journey!

Hi everyone! Haven't checked in for a while. I've taken the week off from work, and am enjoying some "me time." I think vacations at home are the best! Just wish the weather were a bit nicer. Can't get outside much because of the rain. I've come to realize that I definately need a fill. I know you guys have been telling this, but I'm pretty stubborn. I'm really not gaining (other than 2 lb fluctuations), which is amazing, but I know I'm eating too much. I did fairly well with exercise, though I needed more 40 min sessions. I think I'll keep my exercise goals the same for next month, and will schedule a fill within the next couple of weeks. I'm 37 today! Crazy! I'm so glad I decided to take care of my weight issue when I did. My mother was visiting this past weekend, and has been gaining steadily all her life. It's so hard for me watching her struggle with walking, going up stairs, and being in constant pain. She has major food issues and eats constantly - but denies she does. She is almost 57. She didn't support my surgery at first, but I think she has seen that it has been a positive thing. Maybe she will decide to do something for her health...... It's wonderful to hear of all the NSV's, and I love the positivity of this group!

Thanks for the new thread. I'm excited to move my exercise ticker today! The scale isn't moving. But I've got a NSV! I'm wearing a size 24 today! I was in a 30 in January. Sure it's a bit snug, but it's on and I'm strutting. That's right.

Hi all. Well I haven't weighed myself latley, will probably do so tomorrow. I also haven't been keeping track of calories the past few days because I wanted to focus more on eating and getting food and stuff in me and just resting and healing. But I am starting to feel better! I don't think that counts as a NSV since it isn't really related to weight loss directly, but I'm sure happy about it. A couple of days ago I had some chopped beef brisquet for dinner. It was yummy. Then when DH was eyeing my left overs (I always have plenty these days) I told him not to touch them cause that was going to be dinner for the next day. So he started mumbling about how he needs to start ordering more so he will have left overs too. The past couple of days I've been on a cold cereal kick for some reason. It just sounded really good. So I ate some cap n crunch. Then I remembered I had some healthier stuff like grape nuts and kashi. And cold cereal goes down well! I can eat a whole bowl of that stuff. I was surprised because once I wasn't even full after eating a bowl. Shocked is more like it. So I was thinking to myself that maybe I was starting to lose some of my restriction since it seemed like I was eating more of stuff. Then today for lunch I decided to have a burger- a fastfood one since DH picked one up (he worked from home yesterday so he gets to be a bum today I guess). I got a angus burger for burger king, with cheese, but no mayo. Took the top bun off because all that bread is just too filling. So I ate half the burger (no fries- I don't have room for fries!) and then massive PB, evil golfball feeling. Even half a burger with just half a bun was too much I guess. So I suppose my restriction is still pretty good. Cold cereal and stuff like that just slide on down apparently! So I guess I should stick to my oatmeal-- that stuff is sticky. Eitherway right now I am not that concerned about gaining a few pounds. I know that sounds strange and I don't want to gain weight in general, but I feel that I need to focus on just healing now and getting better and making sure I eat. (sometimes its easier to not eat esp if I wait too long and then I feel nauseated and won't want too, etc) Then once I feel stronger and so forth I get back in the saddle, so to speak and refocus on the specifics of the foods and calories. I'd just been feeling so very tired rundown sick plus I feel like I've had great weight loss so right now the numbers aren't my focus. I am sorting through some old clothes I have though- keep, give away, throw out. The keep clothes I am then going to sort by size so when I do go down a size I can just go to the right pile instead of having to sort through all of them. My size 22 jeans are just too big on me! I can take them off without unfastening them! That is a good NSV I think. I hope everyone else is doing well! Keep up the good work!

OH Juli - You look Marvelous! Tia - The picture of you and your daughter is precious, and I love the new do! I can really tell the difference in both of your faces. Congratulations on the NSV Kaelin's Gma! Stay strong and keep the faith everyone! We will all do this at our own pace. Our bodies (and minds) will want to revolt at various times. Working with our bands will be a learning process and will take time. I like the fact that I am losing slowly....I think it's way better for our health and skin and mental adjustment. I was talking to someone who had bypass and lost 100 lbs in 5 months......that is SO not healthy!

    Not Happy

You know what you are eating, and you know whether you are exercising. As most of the surgeons, nurses and dieticians say: Weight loss is a simple balance of getting a calorie deficit. If you aren't losing weight, all sorts of things can be happening, like: 1. Weight redistribution. Exercise changes fat to muscle. If you are working yourself nuts at the gym, look for NSV's rather than the scale. 2. If you look at your diet and find it primarily made up of fat and sugar, you've found your culprit. 3. If when you sit down to eat, you chug Water at the same time, there again could be your answer. What are you eating? Give an honest breakdown of your daily average intake. What exercise are you doing? There will be an answer somewhere in your equation, you just have to gather all the bits together :puke:

Are you eating enough? That could also be a problem. Congrats on your NSVs!

    Exercise challenge - 2008

I did it, I did it, I did it! I did go exercise and I was able to do 15 min on the Elliptical machine WITHOUT PAIN! I'm so excited, I have always LOVED the Elliptical, I think it contributed a lot to my weightloss. However, since my knee surgery, I have not been able to do it for very long before the pain would shoot thru my knee and cause me to swell. Well, yesterday I gave it another shot and I even kicked it up some and it didn't hurt until the very end, and it was just a mild pain, I could handle it. I don't want to push it very much more, but I will continue doing it and hopefully each week I can continue to kick it up. I'm just so excited. I think my knee troubles are about to be the past! I just cannot wait until I can really kick my exercise up, like doing squats and lunges again! I love those and so do my ARSE. Well, not really but it does shrink that area. lol. Anyhow, doing the elliptical yesterday was my NSV. I took your advice Sula and made sure that I wore a sweat band as to not get the sweat in my eyes, it worked. I plan on doing the elliptical again today and my weights. Hope everyone else is doing okay. Pilates is fun and I have taken some classes, I can gell it really works my core. After I can conquer my elliptical, I might try and take a palates class at the gym.

    NSV's for the Merry Losers

I have a NSV that really made me happy. I went shopping today to an outlet mall close to me. I needed a few new shorts for golf. I have already gone through my saved "smaller sizes" and was really ready to buy something new. Well, for years I have been in the plus sizes, as so many of you can relate. I cautiously picked up a pair of size 16 bermuda shorts and headed to try them on - all the while thinking "I know that salesperson thinks I will never get into them - I should be over in plus sizes." But I was shocked. They fit and were even a bit loose. Thinking I wanted them to fit for a while, I slipped backout onto the floor and picked up a size 14 just to see how snug they were. I could absolutely not believe - they fit! I can lose and they will work for a while. So, today was a red letter day for me. Thanks for the post - so I could toot my own horn. Heaven knows - it's been a long time. Down 59 lbs. and loving it. C.N.

    Biking Banders

Wow, I'm thrilled to see this thread!! One of my NSV goals is to ride the Pinellas Trail in St Pete, FL - 38.2 miles. I've never been an avid biker but I enjoy it immensely. A couple of friends have hitched their star on my wagon and we started training just after Mother's Day, riding 5 miles/day, adding a mile each week. Doesn't sound like much when I see all the stats above but for us - none of us in great shape - it's a thrill. We'll be at 34 miles by the second week of January, then we'll hit the P-trail. Three days of the week we bike our miles, swim 45 minutes, then do aquarobics for an hour, all before 11 am. The other days, we hit the gym for strength training. I don't ever see a day when I will love doing the gym thing but training for this ride with my friends has made it a lot of fun. I use AllSportsGPS for tracking my rides/progress and Pandora is a MUST for the ride! I finally figured out how to make my smart phone do both at the same time!
