    8 weeks out and scared

If you are worried about what you did then speak to your team. My advice would be relax a bit, forgive yourself, you know what you did wrong and hopefully would not repeat the incident. You are so near onederland it would be a shame to put off this huge milestone by weight gain. You have done so well, keep up the good work

    Why the Lap Band?

Hi My surgeon does the gastric sleeve and was a big fan of it until he went to a conference in Brazil last year. He said the longer term research (5 years) which is just starting to emerge shows that the sleeve can stretch and often does, leading to some weight gain. His recommendation was the band, although he said until he saw this research he was a huge fan of the sleeve. I guess your pouch can stretch just like the sleeve, so i really just went with his opinion as he is highly respected in the area. Hope this helps.

    Appetite Suppressants

I asked for phentermine a couple of weeks after my band was deflated because I could not control the weight gain. Doc was only willing to give me the lowest possible dosage and it wasn't doing anything except making me act bitchy. So I didn't use it. I've done well on higher dosages in the past. I know how you feel. Right now your stomach is stretched from the band. I was so hungry! The good news is every pound I gained feel off within two weeks post op. I had no pre op diet. Now just under five weeks out I am less than I was when they unfilled me.

    Sleeve restriction

It's all about choices for me , in most cases. I can't eat a huge dinner, so I am sure that helps. I can sure eat in between meals and graze, and that's what causes weight gain. I'm 5 years out now, and I know the clue to keeping it off is not eat in between meals and not snack at night.

Newbies, NSV's and Living the Banded Life...

Our normal monthly lap band support group meeting in New Haven was a good one this month...two new people who were looking for information, one lady who was newly post-op (about 2 weeks out from her surgery), one lady who is scheduled for surgery within the next 2 weeks, plus our session leader and myself. We stayed past the regular 8 pm stop time, we were having so much fun talking. :cursing: It's really cool to meet new people who haven't yet been banded and help them through their journey. The band is so individual and everyone's experience is a bit different, but having that support is so valuable. I really like sharing the ups and downs (mostly ups) with others...I learn something every time I go to the support group. I've told everyone who I meet there about LBT - hoping that they too will find their way here and get additional information that will help them on their banded journey. Some wonderful NSV's have been happening for me lately...I'm a fan of Lane Bryant's clothing, and my sizes keep dropping. I'm sitting here right now wearing a pair of Right Fit Jeans (taking advantage of Casual Friday) in a size Red 2. When I started my weight loss journey, I was wearing size Yellow 5's. That means not only am I down three clothing sizes, my body is reshaping and my waistline is gaining definition. Beyond the obvious aesthetic benefit, it also means that one of the determining factors in heart disease - carrying excess weight in the midsection - is going away for me. I've read articles that say the "apple" shaped body is one that has a higher potential for heart disease because the excess fat surrounds your vital organs and can affect your heart and lungs more than when you carry your weight in your hips and thighs. It is mostly men who carry their weight in the "apple" shape - more women are shaped like "pears" - at least that's the theory. I have noticed over the years that I am seeing more and more women with apple-shaped bodies rather than pear-shaped bodies and it scares me. I did not want to become a statistic, hence my becoming banded. Losing weight in my waist also means that I can experiment with belts more...I just bought a dress at Lane Bryant (on sale - I try never to pay retail!) that has an elastic belt that goes along with it. In the past (my pre-banded life) I would have just snipped off the belt loops and worn the dress without a belt - they never looked good on me. Now that I've lost 37 pounds, however, and because I am active and working out, I can wear that dress with the belt and it looks good -at least that's what my hubby has said! I'm thrilled that I think I look good in the dress as well - we are always harder on ourselves than anyone else in our lives. I'm just finishing up my lunch - one half of a turkey sandwich on wheat, with lettuce, tomatoes and provolone cheese. In my pre-banded life, I would have scarfed down that sandwich and been looking for seconds. It was an exercise in patience to finish half of the sandwich. I'm so happy I could just scream! :cursing: I am looking forward to summer for the first time in a LOT of years - because I know I'll be in better physical shape and be able to enjoy it more. I'm looking forward to traveling and having fun this summer without food being the major emphasis. It's funny in a way - I referred to my relationship with food in the past as an obsessive (and abusive) love affair. No matter how badly the food I ate treated me, I kept going back for more - I couldn't stand for someone else to get more of it than I did. I equated food with love - that started in my early teens, and funnily enough, so did my weight gain. Now that I must truly make choices with food that allow me to "eat to live, not live to eat", I am making better choices. I do sometimes mourn the comfort I used to be able to find in food - now I have to find it within myself. I am looking forward to finding out more about ME - all the things I wouldn't allow myself to experience because I was afraid I might stand out too much because of my weight and size...how much life have I missed? I can't get that lost time back, but I can commit to never hiding from life again! For those of you on this banded journey, take time to reflect on who you are becoming...your interactions with others, the "inner voice" you use to talk to yourself, and what you truly see when you look in the mirror. If you're not yet banded, I encourage you to keep up your search for information, but realize there will never be a perfect time to be banded - LIFE will always get in the way. Don't wait so long that your options are limited - do something for YOU, for your health NOW. As always, email me if you have questions, or just want to talk...I'm here for ya!
  6. Sorry it took me so long to respond. My symptoms were weight gain and after having four fills in a short period of time not having any restriction still. No pain at all.
  7. I jumped on the scale yesterday morning and it said 226.6, and now this morning it's saying 229.9! I was completely shocked and frustrated! I have no idea why Or how I could gain 3.3lbs overnight but I am not happy! I even went to the gym yesterday and did 30 minutes on the treadmill (Dr Approved Treadmill only). Has anyone else experienced this? I know that my weight is going to fluctuate, but 3.3 lbs really? I can deal with 1-2lbs but not almost 4!

And today I decided to eat off piste - completely mental! which has really annoyed me! lol... how are you doing? how did you manage to get through it? I'm really loving this forum! Al ... x
  9. Just got back from my pre-op appnt and i'm so annoyed with myself. I knew the liquid diet was going to take care of the 10-15 pound required weight loss so just ate whatever for the past months. Now ive gained 10 pounds. Doc wasn't happy with the weight gain and wanted me to lose that in addition to the original 10 pounds. Thankfully its just made me more resolved to stick to the liquid diet. No more fooling around. I guess its just Optifast shakes, soups and Healthwise drinks for the next 2 weeks. I can and will do it!

why only 50% of weight will be lost

According to my surgeon, he says that "yes" you can lose all of your excess weight, but after 5 years people only maintain about 50-60% of their weight lost. I am hoping that I am one that can keep 100% off, with no weight gain.

    Feeling Shame about gain

It took me over three years to get over the embarassment of weight gain!! I haven't had a fill since January 2007. I am determined to get back on track. It's never too late!! Go back to your doctor!! You have this wonderful prosthetic device inside your body, use it! Call your doctor right away (he's heard and seen it all, trust me!) Give your weight loss the jump start it needs. P.S. I went back tail between my legs after a 30+ pound weight gain.
  12. Well after many months and many ups and downs I finally have a date to have my eroded lap band removed. March 29th is the big day!!!!!!!!!!! I will have my surgery VERY early in the morning and will stay overnight to make sure there is no leaking from the repaired area of my stomach. Hopefully, if all goes well, in two months I will revise to either the sleeve or banded plication. There is much to consider with both of these procedures and the positives and negatives are pretty well balanced. I have read good and bad things about both procedures. Right now though, I'm just going to focus on getting the band removed and see what kind of damage it's done. So far I have felt no effects other than an occasional pull or tug or momentary pain in the area just below my sternum. I still have some minimal restriction due to there being a plastic ring in the middle of my stomach but I can pretty much eat anything I want and have been. I figure that eventually I will have the tool necessary for me to succeed so I might as well enjoy myself while I can even though the weight gain is making me feel miserable physically. I can't wait to be thin again. Weird how the mind justifies things. If I couldn't eat another cheeseburger tomorrow it wouldn't bother me, but since I can I do! Ugh. I'm definitely ready to get back on track. Let's get this party started!
  13. I was recently diagnosed with Addison's disease. I truly had not changed my diet or exercise routine in 6 years and I just started to gain weight. I was banded in 2005 and thought the weight gain was because I was getting older. I was being treated for hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia for a long time. After several different tests and hospital admissions they found that I had Addison's. I saw my LB surgeon because I was not sure how to adjust my diet. My bariatric doctor tells me to follow my endocrinologist's suggestions for my diet and then the endocrinologist's tells me to follow my bariatric doctor's suggestions. UGH!!! I was wondering if anyone else has a LB and Addison's that maybe able to help me out. I do know that it is a low carb, low sugar (higher than LB suggestions) , high protein, high sodium and low potassium diet. I also had to have all of my fluid taken out about two weeks so I feel like I do not even have a band right now. I have been trying to incorporate the two diets together however I feel like it is not working out so well. The really bad thing is that my endocrinologist told me that working out causes stress on my adrenal glands which causes a chain reaction to other endocrine issues and that it maybe causing me to gain weight. I just feel frustrated and not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated.
  14. I know of someone who was sleeved at 395 pounds on surgery day, lost 140 pounds during the first post-op year, then proceeded to regain it all plus more in the second year by eating copious amounts of slider foods. She is now exactly 400 pounds. I am two years out and have maintained my 100+ pound weight loss with decent food choices and exercise. However, I know I could easily regain everything if I resort to grazing on too many sliders. It is amazingly easy to eat around a bariatric surgery after one year out: just eat a slice of pizza every 45 to 60 minutes, and in a few hours you will finish the entire pizza. Slider foods, a.k.a. slurry foods, are the root of most regain problems in the weight loss surgery community. I have mentioned previously that the road to weight regain is paved with Pringles, Fritos, ice cream, fast food milkshakes, Doritos, Chips Ahoy, Oreo cookies, bread rolls, donuts, Lays potato chips, crackers, and popcorn. Since slider foods do not create that feeling of fullness or satiety in a sleeve, a sleeved person can eat unlimited amounts of chips and cookies. The result is fast weight gain. A sleever can eat a dozen glazed donuts and never feel full. Guess what? That dozen contained more than 2400 calories and you are still hungry for more. However, you cannot eat a dozen turkey burgers because you will feel full after eating one. The one turkey burger had 250 calories at the most. My capacity has tripled since those early days. At a month post-op I had no appetite and could eat maybe 3 ounces at the most before feeling stuffed. At two years out I can eat 8 to 9 ounces comfortably. My appetite returned full force during the 8th and 9th month post-op. At this stage in the game, it is all about good food choices for me.
  15. Just got the call this morning that I was approved for surgery!!! My surgery date is set for October 26th! So apparently the weight gain didn't cause issues, my paperwork was resubmitted on Monday so it was a fast response as well.

    1 week post op rny

Thanks everyone. I don't see my Dr. Until 2 weeks post op so that's the 27th for me. They had advised me not to weigh myself at home because of the weight gain in the hospital from everything they pushed into me. I am excited to see the numbers when it happens. I notice my face slimming out and my collar bone is more prominent.
  17. So does anyone out there suffer from the inevitable ending of the day glass of wine.?! I'm sure alcohol has attributed to some of my weight gain and I'm scared of it continuing to be a problem going forward after surgery because it's a liquid. I know I'll have to scale back but I have a very stressful job and family life and long for that evening relaxing glass of wine. How do I cope? Thoughts??

    I Just Want To Cry...

you have been and still are one of my inspirations .. I have followed your story from the beginning and could not imagine going thru everything you have. You are one VERY STRONG WOMAN.....You can do it again and will do it again... you just haven't reached that place again yet..... Other than the weight gain... are you happy in life with your new baby and new husband? since my TT i can't seem to get motivated to get back to the gym....
  19. Thank you for this. I have been having a really rough time over these last 4 months. I had a friend pass away, a friend diagnosed with stage 3 cancer going thru chemo that is not working for her, and I lost my job all within months of each other. The weather where I live has been bad, so I stopped walking the 1 to 2 miles per day I was doing, and I turned to my comfort foods- cookies, icecream, etc. I have been wallowing in a sea of self pity, and even with telling myself each and every morning that today is the day I get back on track, by evening I would be eating wrong again. I have had the band in since Jan 9, 2010, and because of my gain, I am only 30 pounds down from when it was inserted. This is very very hard for me to deal with. During the end of the summer 2010, I had finally begun to play with my kids, going hiking, playing volleyball, etc, and I can't even tell you how GREAT that felt! I already feel the change that this weight gain has made in my ability to stay mobile and in my attitude toward exercise and moving! I want to be able to parasail, to hike the Appalachian Trail, to move with my kids! Thank you for rocking my boat, and hopefully getting me back on track! God Bless.

    Diabetes and DS...

My wife was a twenty year diabetic, just short of being insulin dependent on about the strongest drug cocktail of the day when she had her DS, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off of all meds for it, and 16 years later is still in solid remission. The doc told us that this is fairly typical, that the longer one has been diagnosed/under treatment, the longer it takes to fully go into remission. This is just a gross generalization, as we see many in these forums who walk out of the hospital free of meds and insulin with only a VSG or an RNY, so there can be a wide variety of responses. Your DS, particularly the "traditional" BPD/DS, is indeed the strongest tool against diabetes - our doc's experience is in the 98-99% remission rate area, which should not be too surprising as it started as a surgical treatment specifically for diabetes, to which the sleeve was added to make it a weight loss procedure. It also seems to be the most enduring procedure for it, as it seems to usually stay in remission even with a fair bit of regain, which happens sometimes, though less with the DS than with other WLS. A few years ago we had a gal come through our support group who had been a successful RNY patient for 20+ years, (the practice was not yet doing the DS at her time of surgery) but whose diabetes had come out of remission with only some moderate weight gain, so she was back to get her RNY revised to the DS to knock it out for good. So, it is an excellent first choice for a diabetic WLS patient. Good luck in your adventure!
  21. Hi Dee. How are you?. You and I had surgery about the same time. I remember you from our September 2019 surgery thread. My surgery date was September 16th 2019 and I have lost 90 lbs so far. I had a two week stall similar to you recently which just broke last week. I even gained 2 lbs in the second week. However in the 3rd week I lost 6 lbs. Go figure. I have read and done so much research on stalls I was not really worried when it happened. I knew it was my body adjusting. The week right before the stall I started exercising and I lost 8 lbs that week. Then came two weeks of a stall and weight gain but I just rode it out and stuck to the plan. Plus I'm sure we are losing inches though its not being reflected on the scale. So when I see a stall I will get excited cause I know a good loss is coming because I normally lose 3 lbs a week on average. Hang in there Dee. Stick with the program and be patient cause you are doing great. Congrats on your weight loss so far. HW 342.8 beg of 2 wk preop liquid diet SW 327.8 Sept 16th 2019 CW 252.2 5 months PO
  22. Thanks for the compliments on the articles! I am so glad they are useful. Yep - WLS (especially gastric sleeve and bypass) can definitely affect (reduce) ghrelin levels and therefore reduce hunger. That's right - so that's a way WLS helps you eat less and lose weight, because you're less hungry. In this article, I was thinking about the factors that contributed to weight gain that WEREN"T strictly about hunger - because I think all of us (me, anyway) used to be guilty of eating when we weren't truly biologically hungry, but eating for other reasons, like we wanted food or for emotional reasons. Great point, though, and definitely a consideration when choosing which type of WLS, since lap-band doesn't affect ghrelin in the same way sleeve does.
  23. I've heard of the 3rd week stall! And guess how many weeks post op am I? Yep three weeks, but now my scale is saying am up a pound or two. And it's messing with my head! Is it because am on soft foods? Am feeling confused.

    Love my band :)

food tolerance and GI quality have nothing to do with weight loss or complication rates. Of course the band scores low in food tolerance. Restriction is the point! I personally would never choose permanent digestive surgery unless my life depended on it. Thankfully right now it does not. I have a food addiction not a physical disease. I've had nothing but malfunctions in my band for 8 years. Even when it had a slow leak or a fast leak I still fought to contain my weight gain. I committed to the band and it has proven to me over and over that it works for me. That being said, the band isn't for everyone. I just get so irritated with people constantly trying to prove its bad. You know what's bad? Irreversibly disfiguring your god given perfectly healthy digestive track for a psychological addiction. All my personal opinion.

    Weight gain??

So I was just wondering if anyone has had a weight gain early on? In the last 2 weeks I have gained 3 lbs. Not sure if this is normal, I have moved back on to eating normal now. Just 2 days ago, I can't poop, not sure if I should bump up my workouts or not. Is it okay to gain a little??
