  1. You'll do fine. Don't worry about the small volume. The small volume will be the first 6 weeks, but, within several months you'll eat about the same as you did with the band. The most value to the sleeve -vs- the band is that you can't eat around the sleeve. When you fill your stomach, that's it!!!! Full is really full! That's when the battle of the head games come in. I will tell you that the post op diet is tougher for sleeve than for band. It was for me anyway, but, you will start losing again. I remember that I didn't have appetite at all for the first months and had to schedule myself to sit and eat or my stomach would growl and I knew I had missed my meal. Drinking any liquids with your meal is a big "Oh heck no!" and you learn really quickly. I have to wait at least 20 - 40 minutes otherwise I get sick. Love the sleeved life, wish I would have gone this route from get go, but at the time the sleeve was to new. Will your doctor do both band removal and revision at the same time if you are a candidate? Some doctors will not do both at the same time no matter if the conditions are good. jake
  2. Ross, I'm 3 years out from band to sleeve revision due to esophagus complications. I did very well with band beginning in 2010, losing over 120 pounds. I was also fed up with the fills, unfills and all the other symptoms with the band! My complication leading to revision was a blessing with some post op expectation challenges. My weight loss with the sleeve has been very slow and I deal with GERD nowadays. Months before my revision my band was completely deflated and I put on over 30 pounds. Since revision, I lost the 30 pounds and just cannot get beyond that. I workout 6 days a week and my body is holding on between 215 - 218 lbs. Here's my take through my experience. With any WLS our metabolisms are damaged or become dormant and aging doesn't help the situation. Initially, we lose the weight because we eat so little and with time this changes. When we start to eat more and start experimenting with our old comfort foods, we gain weight. Remember prior to lapband and all those diets where we did so well, only to put the weight back on and usually doubled it once we started eating normal again? Metabolism freakout, now times that by two with weight loss surgery. A normal meal for me is 1/2 cup of protein and 20 minutes later 1/2 cup of salad or veggies or fruit which gives me the satisfying feeling of satiety. Anything beyond that is head hunger or self sabotage. Regrets? Other than my GERD, which is getting better, I am very pleased with the sleeve. Weight loss is slow, but, my waist size is a comfortable 34 and I can wear a snug 32. Shirt size, large and some mediums. Each one of us is so different. I wish we all had the same results, but, some of us have to work a little harder, but, well worth it! jake
  3. Hi It's been some time since I've been on this site. I was fat my entire life, weight 330 in HS and up and down ever since. Lowest adult weight was College where I got to 225 after starving but never able to keep at a close to normal weight. I was banded in 2009 and like many have had a love hate relationship with my band. Like many it worked but had problems with too much or too little fills. Have had Fluid added and taken out so many times I can't remember. Some issues with Reflux etc. I was 300 when band was placed, lowest was 240, For the last 3-4 years my weight has fluctuated from 250 to 265. Overall I eat well and work out at least 3 x a week, mostly in an exercise class with trainer. (So basically I have been able to maintain a 40 lb weight loss) About a year ago the Nurse at the Bariatric office started talking about a possible revision and how he could really get me to my goal once and for all. I was going to them at least 6 times a year. (They had an annual Self Pay program) We started the Process about 6 months ago, with all the testing, with the testing it was found that pouch was dilated, and dr would not put in any more fills. The insurance initially approved to remove the pouch but not the revision. The Dr asked for a peer review and they came back asking for some more information. which i was able to provide So they have now approved the Revision to the sleeve. I am nervous as I am generally in good health. Have High BP and actually look like most of the old fart friends of mine who are in the late 50 - 60's. many of who never faced a life long battle with weight. On one hand have bad knee issues, that will be better if slimmer as well as High BP, But I am getting older and with the current insurance situation who know if I will ever have the chance to have this done again under insurance. I do want this band out but could not really face the good chance of gaining my weight back if i had noting to help me. Its been hard enough to keep tin the 250-260 range and I don't want to go back to 300 Plus. But also I am concerned I wil never be able to eat a normal meal again. Guess I'm looking for some encouragement from people who have done the band to sleeve Revision. PS Getting Insurance to pay is hard. The Dr said it was unusual that i had so much documentation. I started to go to a good gym just after the band and they log each time you go in for INS Purposes so I had excellent records also had records of weight loss and personal training programs for the last 8 years! and Dr had records for 7 years of followup. They probibly sent 50 pages of documentation as well as letters from various dr. .
  4. Give Dr.Illan with BariatricPal a look over He is Amazing and his staff treat you better than you have ever been treated. I am pretty sure that they are doing a series about a patient that just had the revision done and they are documenting Her success. The Facility he works out of is New and Beautiful and his prices are more than fare.

    DS after sleeve

I got the sleeve knowing if I wasn't successful that I could get the DS as a revision to lose the rest. I have been very happy with my results from the sleeve and the DS isn't needed for me. If I was going to revise to the DS from the sleeve I wait until after the 2 year mark. I lost another 50 plus pounds so far after the 1 year mark. I would also look at how you are eating. What are you daily protein and carbs?

    Pre Op help

Like several others have mentioned, my first choice was the sleeve. But during my gallbladder surgery a couple of years ago, my surgeon discovered I have a moderate hiatal hernia. (He's the same surgeon doing this surgery.) He strongly advised against the sleeve due to me having mild GERD and the hernia. The way he explained it is the small intestines will "anchor" the new pouch, preventing it from slipping back up through the diaphragm. The sleeve lacks that support and stands a greater risk of slipping back through it, and it usually happens within five years. Any GERD issues are often worse, and hiatal repair is a much more major surgery than WLS. I'm not gonna lie: I still wanted the sleeve after he initially explained all of this. I changed my mind to bypass the same day insurance notified me of the approval. I don't want my mild GERD to (possibly) get worse, nor risk a recurring hiatal hernia. You'll hear others who have had the sleeve who either claim they haven't had any issues (which is quite possible) or have had revision to bypass later because of those issues. For me, I want this to be one and done. Ultimately, though, you have to do what's best for you, but I hope our experiences have helped! [emoji4]
  7. Looking for a good surgeon that does revisions, any suggestions!! I would love to hear about your experience
  8. I am able to take sips I must say I get fuller now than I did with the sleeve week one sux if I see another bowl of broth I'm gonna barf I have asked the nurses for one cracker they said no I understand that they are doing their job but seriously 1 cracker smh anyways I am hoping I get to go home today my Blood pressure was out of wack so I had to stay an extra day which is good cause I needed the rest. Anyone else was craving snacks week one? Or hated the broth? Can I try to incorporate purees when I get home or I have to do this until next Tuesday? Plus I found out the one person I used to follow on YouTube who always had great advise on her sleeve journey in Mexico passed away sux well I am truly hoping to see better results with this surgery cause the sleeve did not work for me at all my surgeon said that he was happy with the outcome! And that I will be happy with my results

    Physiological Changes After WLS

Very interesting, thank you. I'm a revision from band to MGB because of reflux issues and a migrating band and I have to say it is very different now! Wish I had done this way, way, WAY sooner! (I was afraid of having surgery again. Should have done it sooner but it's always easy to say that after everything went ok.) I wonder how it will feel after being 2, 3, 7 years out. Definitely worth a quote.
  10. That's really cool! Seems to be that revisions can be successful when it comes to weight loss.

    Bypass versus sleeve

Initially I was 100% for RNY. But after talking to my surgeon, and two second opinions, I fully understood the reasoning why VSG was better for me. Bearing in mind many factors should be in play for you individually as to why you might need one over another. Each person's body is different. In my case, if I don't like the way the VSG went after a year I can talk to surgeon and revise to RNY.

    DS after sleeve

I haven't personally needed to do that, but it is sometimes done either as a planned two step DS procedure, or as a revision/completion of the VSG to continue the weight loss or counter regain. The point that my doc stressed in considering using it as a "plan B" in the event of inadequate results from the VSG is that the revision/completion works best if done before any substantial regain occurs. One of the points that we have discussed over the years in our support group is that with the DS, the majority of the weight loss is due to the sleeve while the switch helps keep the weight off, implying that you may have already used the majority of the weight loss power available. If I were considering a completion or revision in similar circumstances, I would want to know whether there is any problem or defect with the sleeve or something about how I used it as a tool that has left me with less results than I may have expected, so that such can be addressed and corrected as part of the revision process. Is there something about my diet or other habits that has caused a shortfall in performance of the original surgery, which is something that I would want to address, or is there a metabolic problem that the switch would address that the sleeve alone does not? Good luck in finding your answers and with decisions....
  13. Just had to share that I went for my 9 month visit today and I'm down 94 pounds since starting the process for my revision last March. I only wish my husband was as excited as I am.

    Down Days

I had my surgery on Feb 6th. Other than Serious nausea no complications. I had my surgery with a specialist in Arlington, TX. He didn't see me at my two week check in/follow up. Instead I got the PA or Nurse Practitioner (not sure) who is fairly negative. I had the band to sleeve revision and he feels the need to tell me that most B to S patients don't do as well as other patients. I have been following the guidelines for diet and vitamins but am having trouble getting to 64 grams of protein w/o drinking protein shakes. Weight is dropping (at 197 from 232 pre surgery) but I am tired, cranky and way too weepy for my own good. I am walking daily and have been doing some fairly strenuous yard work. Is it because of lack of protein and nutrients? I have my 6 week appointment on Monday. What should I expect at that visit? If he gives the talk again I may slap him (jk). Seriously I need my surgeon's team to be MY team in my success but even though I am losing (35 lbs in 6 weeks) I am dreading the appointment. My husband is trying to be supportive but I haven't told outsiders about the revision so I don't have a "team".

    Scared about MGB, any insight??

I had no reflux at all after my revision to mgb from the sleeve for the first 11 months and now I'm having some. So there definitely is the chance it can happen after some time.

    I HAD MY SURGERY YESTERDAY!

Congratulations! And so excited for you! I'm having my band to sleeve revision on April 10th! I'm nervous, excited and ready! Looking forward to hearing about your journey!

  18. The only reason I even looked into WLS surgery was because of the sleeve because I was dead set against RNY. But after consulting with my surgeon he recommended RNY. During the 6 month insurance requirement I researched and read tons of posts from people who had both procedures and decided I'd rather go for the one that would result in more weight loss and not require me to have a revision later if I developed issues with GERD. At 5 months I am very happy with my decision. I have yet to dump or vomit and can eat most proteins as long as they are not too dry.
  19. Having a revision from Lapband to Sleeve (next week) I already feel like Ive failed at this, so I am not only keeping it to myself, I am not telling my teenage children (this should be interesting) and when asked abt the weight loss I will most likely lie to those that knew of my previous surgery and say I'm now using my band or blame it on some new diet. I just don't want the questions/opinions of others....there I said it.
  20. Intially was thinking sleeve as well, switched on surgeons advice to bypass. Really happy I did. Mine was a revision from a lap band, I would have been devastated risking yet another revision.

    Met Surgeon, feeling dissapointed

My bmi was almost 80 when I started my pre op diet. My doctor told me sleeve would be best because if I didn't lose all my weight that we could always do a revision to rny at a later date. But I'm 8 months post op and my bmi is now almost 40. Just remember what ever you chose to pick it's a tool to help you. Your not going to magically lose weight cause you got it. I still track calories and workout everyday. The bad food still fits in, but I follow the rules and eat my protein first. Just curious what insurance do you have and what were the requirments to get approved for the revision? I had a sleeve done not band and after 5 years Im seeking revision due to weight regain (pregnancy and ither health issues). I'm so afraid my insurance will not approve me. Any advice please is sooo appreciated and congrats to you tomorrow is your BIG DAY!!!

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

The reason we are asking is a hital hernia has nothing to do with needing a revision. Why can't they just repair the hernia? It just sounds like they are trying to get more money. The hernia is giving you GERD and making it hard to eat. Fixing it alone will solve your problems. You haven't posted anything about why you need a revision. It doesn't make logical sense. Also being 4 years post-op with your particular issue, you are going to be hard pressed to get a response from a Vet. Most of them don't post here anymore.

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

I don't think you need a revision, you need the hernia repaired. I would get a 2nd opinion. Sleevers don't have pouches, and a properly formed sleeve does not stretch. You said nothing about how and what you eat. A Bypass won't help you lose weight if you eat around it.

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

Maybe I should have gotten a little more detailed.. I have to force myself to eat.. there are many days the Hubs asks have you ate yet well into the evening and my response is.. uhmmmm.. no?! That's when I realize I haven't. So over eating is not an issue here. As I said before I am good about not eating what I'm not supposed to be and the weight gain is still there. I am well aware that the general cause of weight gain is caused by eating the wrong foods.. calories and carbs. This post wasn't about how did I go wrong or what am I potentially doing wrong, it's to ask others who have had the revision and repair how THEY came out of it.
