4 months glass of wine 5 months Bloody Mary (didn't sit well and couldn't finish it) 6 months vodka cocktails Since then I've had everything from Twisted tea to Apple Crown, vodka, rumchata, Kahlua, wine, bloody Mary's, margaritas, and flat hard cider. Mostly just on vacation or over holidays. Unfortunately Alcohol does not effect me any differently than preop....I can still outdrink a football team. I was really looking forward to being a lightweight, but unfortunately am not. I was an alcoholic preop....drank every day, got seriously drunk on the weekends. I often drank more calories than I ate. But now the calories just aren't worth the buzz. I basically treat it like any other carb....limited occasions and in moderation.

200 protein shakes! yum yum yum :D
glitterpockets posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I stumbled across this website that has recipes for 200 Protein shakes. The first two/three have alcohol so avoid those obviously, but the rest I've seen dont look too bad. I hope this helps if anyone is sick of the same few. http://bariatricrevisionary.blogspot.com/p/200-protein-shakes.html?m=1 (I got so excited I forgot to post the link haha!) -

I'm 26 and had my VSG Nov 30 th. Before my preop diet I was 352.2, day of surgery 334, today 327.8! I am 6'2". I have given up alcohol at this point. For me it's not worth the calories and sugar but know others post-sleeve or post-bypass who do drink. You'll have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself and decide. -

Google "Alcohol after Bariatric Sleeve" and you'll find plenty of information on it. 2 weeks out and over a bottle and a half of wine as well as other drinks, probably not smart. A couple of ounces a few months out, probably not a huge deal. -
Call the Bariatrics police!
ProjectMe replied to jackiemc1987's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program is very conservative, particularly about alcohol. The transference of addictions was the main concern, as nutritionist, surgeons, psycholologist, and nurses all discussed with me during all stages of this process. I drank maybe a glass of wine a month before surgery, so didn't quite understand what the big deal was. Well after they showed the research during our various meetings...I no longer questioned the importance of being aware of this problem. Combine the research proven issues of addiction, empty calories, stress on the liver after a major surgery, not to mention my new tummy is so small I really don't want to waste space on alcohol...I choose not to go against my program's rules in regards to alcohol. Just not worth it in my opinion. But something I've learned on boards...some people rationalize/loosely interpret their programs rules...so my words or the words of way more experienced/successful others is taken offense to or just ignored anyways no matter how much logic is provided. Folks will do what they want to do period. Again this seems like program recommendations, where is the research you speak of that was presented to you ? I would like to see that.I am a librarian so research is my thing. However, I'm leery of spending my time locating the research for you when a simple Google search using the key words, "alcohol dependence bariatric surgery" returns quite a few results. Seems like this issue is no secret. If I thought it would make a difference & you would use this info in a responsible manner, I'd hop on that research for you. But Something tells me that you are going to do what you want to do anyways. What I don't get is why not save time & take your surgeon's & the many folks on this board's word for it. I mean we can't all be blindly following our programs plans without logic & reason... right? -
Can I still eat Keto/LCHF after RNY or sleeve?
FluffyChix replied to 🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm post RNY. Am a long term low carber in ketosis for a long time. As @Matt Z and @CrankyMagpie shared, it is possible. I am definitely in ketosis. I am still low carb rather than calling me a keto girl. I do have to do low-er fat in order not to have bad reactions. If I eat too richly (too much fat/too much cheese) then I will get horribly nauseated and feel like I'm so ill. But I routinely eat between 40-55% fat on some days and am fine. You'd be surprised how little extra fat that represents, once you factor in the need to stay at your personal present "protein adequate level" and reduce your carbs to 20g net carbs (or total carbs) per day. I personally aim for a loose average of 30g net carbs per day mostly from leafy greens, low glycemic veggies, berries, seeds/nuts, eggs, dairy and eat very very few sugar alcohols. I do use some small amounts of liquid stevia drops. -

I'm so glad to hear from you all! It was a little scary not having anyone my age to talk to about this, because honestly, I don't think it's the same experience as someone a little older. I don't have a husband or kids, so I think it will be nice not to have to worry about anyone other than my self. As for the alcohol, I rarely go out now, but I do every couple of months. I honestly don't think I will have trouble giving up alcohol. I joined a sorority in college and got all of my drinking out then Thank you all so much for the replies. I'm sure I will have a bunch of questions -
I definitely realized something when this happened. I felt like an alcoholic in a desert having to choose between thirst and a cold beer. (Not sure where he got the cold beer ????). I'm so scared to cheat because I'm afraid I won't get back on track. Also afraid it will become a habit. That I will justify it the next time and then the next and the next. I didn't realize until that night that I was literally afraid of junk food and afraid of failure. I have already thrown some nuts in my glove compartment.

I wonder if some people were on the verge before surgery. Or maybe had a problem already. I like a glass of wine now and then but have always gotten tipsy on one glass so I think that I would have to stay completely away from alcohol altogether.

Good advice from everyone. I dont know how I've done it but I've managed to lose over Christmas, wow. What I did - kept up, no, INCREASED my exercise. Doug and I have walked 10km (6miles) per day - even at 10pm at night if we had to. Ate the celebration meal, in moderation, and enjoyed it, plum pudding and all - kept the wine to a minimum. No seconds. No dinner Christmas night, strict diet the rest of the time, fruit for Breakfast, kind of thing. We've just been out for Doug's 40th birthday lunch, so no dinner again tonight and a big big long walk. Its doable, you just have to be mindful of what goes in your mouth. Its really not what you sit down at the table to eat that does the damage, its the nibbling and mindless eating, the excessive alcohol, all the little "extras".

Don't be too hard on yourself! We are all addicts. Alcoholics/drug addicts don't have to consume their drug of choice to survive like we do. Drink lots and lots of fluids and maybe leave the house when the family eats.

I got approval for the gym at 2 weeks with a weight limit of 10 pounds until 6 weeks. Check with your doctor though. I got approval for alcohol when I asked at my 8 week visit. I have had wine twice- definitely more sensitive to it. See how the sugar in juice makes you feel. I haven't had juice yet, but have eaten fruit- the plums taste so foo to me! No problems with them at all but so far I tolerate most things well. Check out the eggface recipes on Pinterest. She has one for ricotta bake that is really yummy. You can also just put gastric sleeve recipes on Pinterest and there are some great recipes/ Good luck!! Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 191 GW 135

Questions About Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Bufflehead replied to Hiraeth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
1. How long should I expect to be off from work after surgery? I know that it is up to the doctor, but I just want an estimated idea. I work a very low physical job. So, there will be barely, if any, physical duties. Plan on a couple of weeks. Might be more, might be less, but about 2 weeks is a good starting point to plan for. 2. Will I have to avoid carbonated drinks for the rest of my life? I'm not a huge soda drinker, but I do drink it from time-to-time. I know that I'll have to avoid anything carbonated 6 months post-OP. But does that mean for the rest of my life, as well? It's ok if I have to. I'm just curious. Some surgeons do recommend avoiding carbonated drinks for the rest of your life. Some don't. It may also depend on what your new, tiny stomach can tolerate. I can't have anything carbonated without discomfort, so I avoid it. IMO it's important that you be willing to stick to whatever your surgeon/dietitian recommends. Being committed to being compliant is a big part of the battle to be successful post-op. 3. Are Protein drinks, like Muscle Milk, the type of Protein Drinks that I'll be able to drink, or will they have to be made? You should be able to drink either pre-made or ones you make yourself, as long as they meet your dietitian's nutritional rules. For example, I could not drink regular Muscle Milk because it is too high calorie and high carb for my plan -- but I could drink Muscle Milk Light, if I wanted to (I don't, to me it tastes like industrial waste water). 4. Will I have to stop drinking alcohol completely? I rarely drink, but when I get around my childhood friends, they love to drink, and sometimes I'll drink a little. Again, this is up to your individual surgeon/dietitian. I think it is rare that any of them require you give alcohol up for life though. 5. Has anyone with PCOS had any improvement with their symptoms? If so, please explain. N/A 6. What would you say is an emotional eater? 1. Find a cognitive behavioral therapist who specializes in bariatric surgery patients (your surgeon should be able to refer you to someone good; and 2. Start developing activities and hobbies you like to do in place of eating. 7. Will I still be able to take Adderall after the surgery? Adderall helps my OCD. My OCD causes me to lose concentration on important things, so Adderall helps keep me focused. Probably, but discuss with your surgeon and possibly a pharmacist. You may need to adjust dosages, but most people continue taking their meds without any problems. 8. Is there any long-term pain after the surgery? No. 9. Will I be able to have kids? I'm only 24 years old (25 in about 2 weeks) and I have no kids. I want kids in my future. You will be more likely to get pregnant and to have healthy babies and children when you are no longer morbidly obese. It takes far fewer calories than most people think to nourish a healthy fetus, or a growing baby if you are breastfeeding. So if you plan your food intake carefully you don't have to worry that you will have an underweight baby or anything like that. There is probably not much you could do more beneficial to your future of having children than get yourself to a healthy weight. 10. Will I really have to drink 6-8 cups of Water a day? I barely drink 3 cups a day because a lot of water makes me feel sick. No. You will have to drink 8 cups of some sort of liquid in your liquid phase after surgery, but you gradually shift that over so you are getting more fluids from food. You will have to drink more than 3 cups a day though. I hardly ever drink water and I am perfectly healthy! 11. Is it true that laying down after eating should be avoided? If you have acid reflux, yes. Gastric sleeve can cause or exacerbate acid reflux so this is a rule that a lot of people find it helpful to follow. -
Have a question about drinking
Rachel412 replied to ybnormal143's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Alcohol? Yes, they're OK in moderation. Some (most?) surgeons advise you to avoid carbonated drinks though. And alcohol may hit you a lot harder/faster post-surgery. -
The effects of alcohol on weight loss? Negative. Alcohol has no nutritional benefit for weight loss. It is empty calories. Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

I posted this in the general food section of the site but thought i would put it here too for my fellow Aussies.. CalorieKing has some good food ideas, i joined up and finally made my way around the site, but you can make up your own menus with their suggested food and it counts the calories for you so basically after you put in your details it calculates what your calory intake should be and works it from there. EG: (First number is cals, 2nd is Kj) Breakfast (x) 3/4 cup of low fat milk, 1% 86 361 (x) 1 cup of Uncle Toby's Fibreplus 106 441 (x) 1 cup, mashed (225g) of Fruit, fresh: banana, raw, edible portion 200 835 Meal Total 392 1637 lunch Load Meal | Save Meal Cals kJ (x) 1 serving, 100g can drained (90g) of John West: Fish, canned: Light Tuna Tempters, Onion & Tomato, Drained 81 340 (x) 3 cracker (3.2g) of Arnott's: Crackers: Jatz 97% Fat Free 39 162 Meal Total 120 502 dinner Load Meal | Save Meal Cals kJ (x) 1 small serving of fruit 50 210 (x) 1 serving of Steamed Fish with Rice and Broccoli (View Recipe) 323 1342 (x) 3 cups of tea or coffee, black 36 162 (throughout day) (x) 1 carton (200g) of Yoghurt: Fruit Flavoured, Fat-Free / Diet, Average All Flavours 94 390 Meal Total 503 2104 Snacks Load Meal | Save Meal Cals kJ (x) 1 tablespoon of peanuts 168 693 (x) 2 cups of popcorn, air-popped 54 225 Meal Total 222 918 Food Total Cals kJ Day Total 1237 5161 This is an example when i was playing around trying to figure it all out.. Then at the bottom after all that it says: You have used 1237 out of your net daily budget of 1470 calories and have 233 calories remaining. 17% of the calories are from fat, 29% from Protein, 54% from carbs and 0% from alcohol. so and so had surgery and....shut up (vent)
Rachael replied to thatgurl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted to slip the s*** out of her. But didn't. My husband and I work at the same company. He works downstairs in computers. I am a social worker. I told her that I didn't that was a good idea. I wouldn't want her raising my kids. She is just jealous. She in a miserable marriage, etc. I feel more sorry for her than any thing. My husband told me he wouldn't want her. She is a CRAZY person. I guess my whole point with offering that was to say not to listen to people who have no idea what they are talking about. Stay with the people who are successful...the same thing I tell my clients who are getting clean off drugs and alcohol. I am so happy to have support on this website. Thanks to everyone -
Parrot Bay coconut Water margaritas! Tiny little cans about half the size of a soda can. Probably don't have them at a bar, but it's my drink of choice at home or a party. Low in sugar and the coconut water makes me feel kinda healthy LOL. The alcohol content is pretty low (my mother in law had one at my house once and asked me if it was non alcoholic) but it's plenty for me! The alcohol hits me hard post sleeve but like many have said, it's gone quickly.

I'm 4 was post op when can I have a drink a wine or rum and pineapple juice Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App

@Ivlpar Stuff happens. I see a lot of people picking vodka. I know when I was on Adkins, I drank diet coke and rum. Yes, yes, I know we aren't supposed to drink alcohol or drink carbonated beverages. But some of of us "chose" to imbibe in moderation. I can hardly drink. It hits me hard AND I get full. Only my opinion!
-
Agreed. I've never heard of a job that forces one to drink or they'll get fired. You can be social and around alcohol without drinking yourself. For someone to go so far as to remove an internal organ but then to break one of the most basic rules of success sounds like a dependancy issue. Just like food addiction, it needs to be addressed. I know for me, being overweight was a constant process of making deals with myself. "Just one can't hurt" or "I'll only eat half, that won't be soooooooo bad". But what 30 years of obesity has taught me is it's never just one and there's NO way that other half will get thrown away. Especial given that one of the posters here said they won't drink without their spouse because they make bad food decisions when they drink?? Red flag. Red flag. Red flag. Everyone here is a grown adult responsible for their own decisions. But going into this with the mind set that "just one is okay" is setting yourself up for total failure.

I agree with the alcohol. Just pour some into some gauze and let it soak for a few minutes. Comes right off.
