    2 days post op

Don't worry about weight gain just post surgery. It's quite normal. Congratulations on the surgery and speedy recovery

    any Topamax users

Hi! I was on Topamax for 2 1/2 years to help with my Bipolar. What is your use of the drug. It does help to keep you from gaining weight while on other antidepressent drugs which cause weight gain. My only bad side effect was I could not drink anything carbonated or eat gummy candy because it made theses things taste bitter.

    Sleeve talks, fat walks

I had Lupron injections which basically took out my testosterone and aided in the weight gain. I also had chemo with steroids which put it on as well. I decided on the sleeve rather than RNY which my wife got because I didn't want malabsorption. Recovering from cancer and cancer treatment I figured I needed sure nutrition. I have had some gerd issues however they are minimal when I eat right.
  4. I don't think I ever had the weight gain from the short time I was on IV fluids in the hospital...but a friend had told me not to weigh myself the first few days I was home...I am 6 days out today, and I am down 9 lbs since surgery day...most of the gas and bloating is gone but not all...my biggest thing is that I am occasionally getting that heavy feeling in the center of my chest between my breasts--sort of like indigestion or gas pains...my dr gave me a script for Prevacid which I might try--has anyone else tried that? Like whodatcat, I am not sure if what I am experiencing is acid-reflux related or true hunger
  5. I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post op and have slowly started introducing soft foods back into my diet the past few days. Is it normal to actually gain weight during this period? I've gained 3 pounds in about 4 days since introducing more food. Does this eventually even out? Just want to hear from others who may have experienced this. I was doing so well with the weight loss (43 pounds in 2 months) but it has completly stopped now. I admit I could be walking more and definetly drinking more water.

    Update From QatarPhil

Hello November 07 Bandsters, Apologies for being neglectful over the past while; time I updated you on my progress and issues. Weight Loss Plateau. After a fill in early February I enjoyed a few kg of weight loss, but then a long plateau with no loss. Noted I was eating and drinking slightly more; but nothing like the old pre-band Phil. Anyway a weight gain of 1 or 2 kg spurred me on to get another fill on Saturday 26 April. Loss of Restriction. While I was in for the fill, my doctor and I were discussing why we loose restriction after a fill. You know, feeling tight with great weight loss for one or two weeks then gradually the restriction lessens. Anyway we wondered if the band wasn’t holding the saline solution and if it was leaking out. To test this he syringed out the 5 cc already added to check it was still there and confirmed it was, at the same time he added 2 cc. Over Filled Experience. Interestingly the 2 cc on Saturday made me so tight that even a mouthful of Water made me sick. As soon as I left his office, while I was paying the account, I vomited up the test water (we don’t do fluro, just drink water to test the restriction). But I thought things would settle down and wasn’t too worried. Mind you I was uncomfortable. But by Monday afternoon I was feeling no different and was worried about dehydration, so I came in for an un-fill. Straight away I was able to drink water with no issues. The difference was immediate and quite dramatic. Since then I am still on liquids, but will try some well chewed solids this evening or tomorrow. Even with 1 cc extra (total 6 cc rather than 7cc) I feel tight; so I am expecting some good weight loss over the next few weeks. So we know the band is working, small adjustments are effective and it certainly holds pressure. Over All Weight Loss. I’m down 21.8 kg (48 lbs) so far and wearing size 97 cm (38”) trousers and shorts. Was able to buy some inexpensive sport shorts from a supermarket on the weekend. The old Phil used to struggle to find clothes to fit and they were premium price. I’ve been dumping old shirts and trousers and happily buying new smaller ones; what a nice problem. All the best with your own weight loss journey. QatarPhil.
  7. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on April 12th 2016 and I could tell there was a problem right after. I couldn't keep anything down I found out I had a kink in my sleeve. They sent me to gastrointestinal doctor who dialated it with a balloon on August 12th 2016, October 20th 2016, and again on April 28th 2017 (it kinked 3 times so far and I think it is kinking again). But I made it from day of surgery weight of 254 to 162 in January 2017 I was happy as a clam. Recently I've been gaining weight I had to cut my working out quite a bit because I had to have knee surgery on may 12th 2017 I also have fallen off the good food wagon a bit and started drinking soda more then i should and cut back on water which I shouldn't have. I'm going to start back to a healthier lifestyle and cut the soda to low to none amount. I have gained almost 15lbs in the last 5 or so months and I am so scared that I will gain it all back. I need support on my journey, words of encouragement, someone to say you are going to be ok. I went to put on a pair of jeans I did fit in fine before this morning and they were a tight I broke down and cried, I feel i may be going backwards.
  8. Sorry, no actual swinging in this one! As we are all pretty much obsessed with food, does anybody else find themselves obsessed with not eating food while on their pre-op diets? When I was in high school I went days without eating and walked a minimum of 4-5km a day. It was the only way I could keep my weight below 140lbs and I was just a little obsessed with keeping food out of my mouth. (Yes, I told the clinic people this) After high school I got out of that pattern, got sick, and subsequently packed on huge weight. Part of the weight gain is my fault and part of it is a combination of the drugs and unfortunate genetics. Since I'm having so much trouble with the Protein Shakes, I've had to abandon them in favour of a veg and Protein diet and I was told "to go hardcore" on it. It was like a kick to my subconscious and I feel exactly like I'm in high school again. I'm reliving those days when I enjoyed being hungry and right back in that pattern like I never left it. So far for the week my biggest eating day was 900 calories. Yesterday was my best at 450. I went to bed hungry and happy. I was supposed to get down to 294lbs for surgery and, at the rate I'm going, I'll likely blow by that as I've got two more weeks of pre-op diet and only 5 more pounds to lose. Am I a freak here or is this common... the swing from compulsive overeating to compulsive undereating? Do we always need something to obsess over?

2 years out - what is your daily menu like?

Seems a bit of a weight gain is normal. June I will be four years out. It took a bit of finagling for me to find where I start losing weight again. The weight loss is slower. Jimmy dean turkey sausage Lunch: Smoked salmon salad Pre workout: fresh bartlett pear. Lee labrada homemade sweet potato muffin. Post workout: Run fast eat slow - homemade trail mix dinner: lentil stew - Ground turkey, beef broth, lentils, carrot, green beans, diced tomato, celery, onion and garlic snack: Quest cookie..It is processed but I had a sweet tooth.
  10. We dont state our weight on our licences here anyway. It seems nuts to just keep reissuing the same photo! Regardless of weight gain or loss people change so much over the years. I think I havent aged much, no saggy skin yet etc but when I look at a photo of myself at 28 I want to cry, lol. So fresh faced!
  11. i have never used depo but because of my gradual weight gain after high school i haven't had a period in almost 5 years.. dr told me that if i loose weight then i willstart to have cycles again so your weight could def be a factor in the no periods.
  12. The last couple of weeks I have not been paying much attention to what I've been eating nor have I been very good at working out. Prior to my surgery this would have been cause for a great deal of stress and very definitely a weight gain of at least 5 lbs or more. But I just realized that instead of majorly overeating and gaining lots of weight and having lots of guilt, etc., I have been fluctuating up and down the same 2-3 lbs, have not felt like I've eaten everything in the house but the kitchen sink and don't have the same level of stress, anxiety, and guilt about it as I used to! I'm just having an "off" couple of weeks and I'm still able to maintain my weight! What a great feeling!
  13. Hi I was just wondering how many of you gained weight before your first fill. I was banded in mid Apr and lost consistently until I started solids (and I was still very careful in what I ate AND have been exercising). I've noticed that I've gained 3-4 lbs in the last week!!!!! WTF!!!! I go for my first fill next week. I've heard this can happen but I'm just curious as to how many folks it has happened to. I'm trying not to beat myself up or get discourgaged by it but it is difficult!!

    Birth Control

I really doubt 60 pounds weight gain was from birth control. but all peoples body react differently to things i guess.
  15. 100% honest; I am eating Carbs. Right or wrong I vomit so much toast became my go too for something. I will try to put protein on the toast if it feels ok. Can't say I need a new dilation as I'm gaining weight! Good lord that would be worse . No, I'm not drinking enough. 17. Hi, I am back online to this site. I started about a year ago but did not care for the doctors or their set up so it's taken me a year later to get it together enough to try other doctor's. Anyway, I have my paperwork in but have not heard anything yet. I am 53 years old, married to my best friend for almost 30 years. Two children, two grandchildren and one granddog. My family is very important and love spending time with them. I have a great support network with family, friends and church family. I have severe arthritis and have been disabled for 5 years. Unable to walk, work and everyday mobility has brought me close to 300 lbs. My life took a total change when I could no longer walk, I have to use a walker and a scooter to get around. I am tired of not being able to live my life to the fullest and sitting on the sidelines. That's why I have resorted to Lap Band surgery. When I am able to lose 75 lbs. I hope to be able to have my knees replaced and then get back to a normal life style. I need a lot of help if anyone wants to contact me, I also would like to have recipes and figure out what to expect after surgery. I love to cook, sew, play with my grandchildren , attend church activities and was pretty active prior to the health problems after the 100 pound weight gain these last 5 years.

    Easy weight gain

I'm 3 years post surgery. I've recently been able to eat whatever I want and I have no will power! I've gained 12 lbs in one month. Anyone have suggestions? Advice? I've heard some pills can be taken. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Well this is a hit in the head. Lost 12# one week post op. Next 2 days, I have gained 1 1/2 #. Getting 90% of water, 100% protein, and about 500 calories what with skim milk and protein mix. Anyone else had this happen?
  20. Today was my last weigh in for the six-month medically supervised diet program. The final word is a 12 pound weight GAIN! Yep! So, as a form of punishment I ate three double cheese burgers from White Castle, potato chips, cake and ice cream. I was so sad and humiliated by performing so badly and possibly jeopardizing my chance for insurance approval for my surgery that I just had to make myself pay. I keep asking myself why I can't master this. Why can't I simply get my weight and eating under control? I say that it's all I want so why can't I make that one thing happen? I ask and ask and ask and I can't come up with an answer. A friend of mine reminded me that in spite of all of her success and the fact that she has access to anything in the world she wants, Oprah can't get it right either. That's an excellent point, but it still doesn't help. I keep beating myself with every weapon I can find because I can't get a handle on this. My question for the day is if one cannot see a future for oneself does that mean that it's time to die. I haven't been able to see a future for myself in decades, but now it frightens and worries me. I don't see more than a few hours in front of me and maybe I don't need to. I remember someone saying that when you're driving on the open highway at night, your headlights only illuminate so many feet in front of you and that's all you need to see in order to complete your journey. I know that I want lap band surgery. I know that I want to release my "Kick Ass" self and get over all the bullshit that I hold on to as beliefs. I know that I want to live. So, I trudge forward boldly sending my record from the program to my surgeon for submittal to the insurance company. I'll have to see what happens. More to come!
  21. How much did or are you eating at 3 weeks post op VSG? Tomorrow will be my 3 weeks post op. I’m curious if I’m eating too much (I can eat up to 4oz). The pictures attached are all the guidelines I was given and even on the example meal plan seems way too much. I wasn’t given a calorie goal or anything. My mom was curious on how I was doing so she had me go on the scale Thursday and I had gained 1.6lbs. I know it’s not much but because I’m only on week 3. I make my protein goal of 50-60 grams a day but I’m always short from my 64oz of water by 20oz. I been back to work for 4 days now and I make it a priority to walk home from work since I live not even a mile from my job. Some NSV I have had since surgery are that I can almost touch my thumb and middle finger together around my wrist, I can sit on a conference room chair comfortably without the arm rests going into the sides of my thighs (now it still does but not as much as it use to), I see my face slimmer and as well as my stomach, I can wear jackets I had to put in the back of my closet because my arms were too big and I couldn’t zip them up.

    Just curious....

@@AuburnDarling Don't want to get into a big debate with anyone about the band... I have had mine since 2009. I love my band and she loves me back. I'm in it for the long haul. Having the band doesn't stop me from living my life. And I know of many people who have had there band removed and kept the weight off. So, it is doable...but its not the norm. A lot get it removed because they went in thinking that the band is a "sure thing" and when they failed to following the rules and make life changes.. they blamed the band. After all surely it couldn't have been them (sarcasum) But like any other WLS weight gain is a possibility. I know plenty that has Sleeve & GB that gained the weight back. It's all about what you put in it and what you want to get out of it I watch everything i eat, but mostly how i eat. Does the band help keep me in check, sure it does, but so did every other diet....till i stopped.... WW has points, Jenny has pre packed meals, Atkins had counting carbs... ETC... I made the choice to have it done and to take responsibility for what i would have to do to make it work. I exercised 5-6 days a week and walked everyday. I still walk everyday. I just don't go to a gym, but thats a diff. story. Ask yourself... on my previous diets, did i lose the weight and keep it off for a long period of time? Was the weight loss short lived? What did i do to lose the weight and gain it back? Did I make life choices in what and how i eat? did i exercise? Do you have a good support system? Why are you wanting to lose weight? Is it for you? family? significant other? Am i wanting to lose it to help a relationship? Am i prepared to lose friends & others? You should sit down and think of these things. things that change: You, in every aspect. Your weight, frame of mind, confidence, energy, the way you look at life and how life looks back at you. Your family & friends... some will support you and some won't. Being your biggest cheerleader.... because if you are waiting on other to give out all the At-a-girl you will need... you will be disappointed. Of course you can get it removed.... though i don't see why anyone would want to unless it's medically needed. It's like saying... Im only going to get this pacemaker put in till my heart does what it's supposed too... Im only getting this stint put in till i learn to eat right, stop smoking, exercise.... See the point. Im going to keep mind as long as i possibly can... and if something should happen, ill cross that bridge when or if it happens. seek out a good addiction therapist... weight loss is mostly in the head.... after all you can lose the weight.. the problem we all had was keeping it off..... Good luck in what ever your choose too do.
  23. I was sleeved May 30, 2013. I lost 80 lbs and had never really had any problem with weight gain until last year. Then my husband retired and a month later found he had prostate cancer then successful surgery. I eat when stressed and surprise..... Before I realized it I had regained 40 lbs. Now I plan every nite to get back on track and fail before 10:00 each day. So disappointed with myself.

    Keto vs. No Keto

No, I was completely off track. I started eating a lot sweets, breads, pastas....hence, the 40pd weight gain. I've been slapped back into reality and I'm ready to get my butt on track. I'm heading home, I will share more when I get home.
  25. You mean in the maintenence phase? I feel in moderation and factored into your daily caloric consumption there is no issue having a drink once a week or even once a day if it's not causing you any adverse effects like weight gain or dependence. The losing phase is a bit more challenging because like stated above, drinking can hinder weight loss and rob you of the precious honeymoon period window of time where hunger is low and weight loss is easier. The honeymoon period is also a time where you should be setting up healthier habits in preparation for the maintenence phase, and in my opinion, drinking other than ocassionally doesn't really fit into that equation.
