  1. Not only do I have the lap band but I work in surgery and see patients all the time have this procedure done. I have run across old and new threads about all three being months post op. Well here is the thing and I hate when people get frantic because they dont know what is wrong and want to take their band out or get the by pass done just sayin. I am 10 months post op. I often had and have shoulder pain but shoulder pain comes from over eating. Everyone has a nerve in their stomach that runs from the stomach to the shoulder when you have over eaten and the band presses on that nerve you will have pain. If you are havng this problem then whatever you are eating cut it in half. You also might have inflammation in your stomach so give it a rest of 72 hours. Go back to the diet you had when you came home from the hospital and start over. For gas and bloating my culprit was cinnamon in my coffee and spices and talking while eating, chewing gum, after I stopped all that the gas and bloating stopped. Also start drinking some probiotics dan active, eating activia yogurt, and use gas x until the symptoms stop. You probably are going back to your old eating ways at some point and you just cant. We have to stay on the diet, follow the diet or else you start having side affects you didnt have before. But dont talk about taking out your band until you have tried what you were doing before all that started. Hope it helps I really do.
  2. Dave, you are ROCKIN!!! And you are doing exactly the RIGHT thing....mini-goals. That's what kept me going....not the old "Heavens I have to lose 70, 80, 150 pounds....like climbing Mt. Everest" but "Hey, I have an event to attend in 6 weeks. Wonder if I can get down 5 pounds for it!" That way you have a reachable goal in sight....sometimes I would even make them "baby mini-goals" (super easy to attain) and then when I would pass the goal "long" before its date I'd feel SOOOOOOOO good! Right now I am trying to knock off another 3-4 pounds before Christmas. I KNOW I can do it, though things are slowing down because I am close to goal.:whoo::clap2:
  3. I Everyone I am 5 weeks post op today and lost 4 and 1/2 pounds this week , brining my total weight loss with pre op 38and 1/2 pounds even after a two week stall , Hope everyone one else is having a good journey x

    Water And Working Out

I don't have a trainer, yet. But I started by going to a toning class twice a week and then doing cardio 2-times a week. Now I focus on curcit and cardio 3-4 times a week. As for motivation...it's more willpower then anything. Don't get me wrong. There are a few times that I only made it twice a week like this week, but I am determined to continue on the path to good health.
  5. Hi all, I need some motivation/suggestions. I was sleeved 4/1 and I've been pretty successful, in my opinion. I've lost a total of about 50 pounds. The problem I've been encountering is this: it's really painful for me to exercise. I have a pinched nerve in my hip. Anyone who has one, knows what kind of pain this is. it seriously feels like a knife is tearing through your hip every time you take a step. It's caused by all of this excess weight I'm currently carrying. Everyone I have seen have said that once the weight comes off, it should heal on its own. Walking for more than 15 minutes starts to irritate it and I'm left limping back home because I can't tolerate the pain. I tried pushing through the pain once and I walked for an hour. Needless to say, I was miserable for a week afterwards. Every step was excruciating. There are meds I can take (Celebrex) that helps with the inflammation however I'm weary of taking meds since my stomach is so small now and there's less acid to break down the capsule. My doctor said to take it in case of emergency. My question is: what kind of exercise can you suggest? I know this is a tough question to answer but I need help. If I'm home, I usually have some weights to work out my arms and occasionally, I swim since the Water keeps the pressure off of my hips. I can't swim everyday though. What do you think? Does anyone else have a similar problem? I want to speed up this weight loss as much as possible and I'm really REALLY concerned about excess skin. Thanks in advance
  6. I just wanted to share this in case this happened to anyone else or maybe I could help someone else. I had my band put in on 7/6/09 and I had no complications. I lost 40lbs. in about two or three months and everything seemed to be fine. I then noticed that I wasn't feeling restriction and so I would get my fills and I would feel restriction a week or so afterward but then I'd have virtually no restriction so I would get another fill. I kept doing this and talking to my doctor and getting more fills. I never had any problems like vomiting or productive burping and I could eat a normal size meal like I did prior to the surgery. I was very frustrated. My doctor didn't know why this was happening and decided to fill my band while sitting up and sipping cold Water and he filled it up until I said that the water wouldn't go down anymore and let out just a little. I have 7cc in my band now which i think is an 8cc band and he said that he's never put this much in a band but to call if any problems. I didn't have any problems and the same thing happened: It worked for about a week and then it was if I had no band. I tried to eat the small portions and very healthy and I did exercise but mostly cardio, no resistance training at the time. I gained 20lbs back though. I kind of just gave up on the band helping me much especially since I don't have insurance anymore. My husband and I started an exercise program that includes a lot of abdominal and core exercises and we've been doing this for over a month and now I have great restriction. I get very full on about 1/2 cup or a cup of food and I have to be very careful about how fast I eat or I will vomit. It's as if I just got the band a month ago because this is what was supposed to have happened earlier. My husband thinks it may be because my core/ab muscles are pushing in towards my stomach now. I'm not sure but I'm so glad it's finally working. I felt stupid for doing the surgery before this.

    Who goes to Curves post-op?

I joined Curves about a month ago. I was about 7 weeks post op. I work full time and my husband is out of town for work all week long so the only time I have without the kids is at lunch time. I pop over there at my lunch breaks and it only takes me about 45 minutes for dressing stretching and driving along with the workout. I love it. I am not ready to go hang out with the skinny girls and body builders and wait for the machines and try to 'Wing it'. Curves always has a girl there to help you on the machines so you get a good workout and don't injure yourself. My nutritionist told me that Curves was perfect for WLS because it works all of the muscle groups and that will tell your body..."HEY I STILL NEED THOSE MUSCLES SO DON'T USE THEM FOR ENERGY". "GO PICK ON FAT, WE'RE NOT USING THAT" Go for it!!! you won't be sorry.

    Straws

I started using straws at 5 weeks (yes, I asked both the doctor and NUT first. It was in relation to wearing a Camelback while biking, but the bite-valve tubing is straw-like). Both of them said "try it and see", and sip slowly and mindfully. It didn't bother me, and I started using a straw fairly regularly at home (I have a plastic Starbucks cup with plastic straw that I use for my water). I have a pair of cats, so something with a lid is essential.
  9. Hi all. I am post op (11/19) and just joined a gym (24 Hour Fitness). I cannot afford a trainer so I was wondering if anyone can tell me their workout plan or routine? So far I have been doing treadmill for 20 minutes and then I go to different weight machines to work my muscles. I swim for an hour and a half twice a week replacing the workout above. I am obviously looking to lose but also tone. Any advice??? Thank you. Kacey B.

    The Price of Mexico

Hey there - I'm at the hospital in Mexicali now. It was $8750 all inclusive - which is a special for the month of July. I'm in day three. It includes pick up from San Diego, one night in a resort here in Mexicali, all bloodwork, testing, surgery, hospital, everything - and a two weeks supply of Nexium. (You have to have Nexium for at least the first 3 months. It can be pricery.) The first two days were really hard - I wasn't prepared for it to be this difficult. If you get it, I really do recommend having someone come with you if you can. I came alone and regret it somewhat.
  11. Friday was a big day, 4 hours worth of appointments. sleep Study set up, thankfully it's at home. I have to do it for two nights, and will finish that tonight. Yay. This was a part I was not looking forward to, maybe I am afraid of the results. Not sure. But I will find out on Friday what the verdict is. Medical Assistant did my body composition (down 3% in fat since August-woot!), EKG, blood work and metabolic test. They did the Resting Energy expenditure. Turns out my metabolism is slow, I only burn just under 1800 calories at rest. Well no wonder the diet I had been on hasn't been working. I've been eating too many calories. Which leads me to... Nutritionist, where we went over what the diet will look like and what my goals will be. It was pretty general in the sense that I didn't get much in the way of written instructions. She said the Dr. will go over that when I meet her in a few weeks. She did say to start getting in the habit of slowly eating and chewing a lot. She told me to find a Protein drink that I like and can tolerate for 6 weeks. She said she's not very "strict" on the nutrition label, besides being 20g of protein or more. She said she'd prefer that it be sweetened with Stevia. Ok, I can do that. She also said I should aim for 1500-1800 calories a day (more on heavy exercise days). I had been doing 2200, so this is going to be a bit to get used too. Then I met with the Exercise person who set me up on a strength training program to bulk up my muscle. He told me to cut back on my spin classes, only 2 now instead of 3. He wants me to lift 3-4 times a week instead, really aiming to build the muscle mass. He said the muscle mass will increase my metabolism which will burn more calories. I kind of knew that, but he was really cool; avid cyclist too! He gave me tips on wheels for my bike! Best part was telling me I will be back on my bike and spinning 4 weeks post op! That was the best news!!! Next up is psych evaluation on March 2, then I meet with Dr. Patterson on March 12! This was starting to get real, and I was very nervous last night. But I am feeling better about it. The exercise Dr. said most sleeved women lose 20-25 lb a month. Wow! So for those waiting to do the pre-op, this is what I did. Hope this is informative to you.
  12. I have my individual appointment with the clinic in two weeks, am excited and anxious. I'm wondering if anyone on this site has been sleeved in Halifax and has any advice for me. I know there have been a lot of VSG's done here in Halifax, but I guess they haven't been fortunate enough to find this web site. That's too bad because I've sure read some wonderful information on this site.
  13. I am nearly 9 months out from surgery and have lost about 75 lbs. I still have about 25 lbs. to go to get to my final goal weight, but it has been tough sledding the past two months (last month I only lost 3 lbs!). I am eating about 1,200 calories a day and exercising 5 days a week (primarily cardio ... walk/jog intervals or Zumba class or exercise DVDs). I have definitely stepped up the intensity and duration of my workouts the past month. My eating could be better -- I have been working to cut out Snacks. But, I am starting to worry that I will never get to goal. So, for those of you who are are 10+ months out from surgery, there must have been a point in time where your bod just stopped losing weight. Has anyone experienced that where the weight loss has stopped well short of the goal? How did you deal with that?
  14. I was having that very thought just the other day. I was getting ready to go shopping for some smaller pant (always a fun part of this journey), and I realized that I had not stopped to eat lunch and it was after 2:00. Prior to this I would have in all likelihood been planning my lunch within an hour of breakfast ending. It has only been a little over three months and my lifestyle has already seen signifigant changes. These were changes I knew I should have made before, but for whatever reason could not. I feel energized in general every day, and I think alot of it comes from finally feeling empowered where my body is concerned for the first time in my life!

    Lap Band And Flight Duration

My band is currently empty and I flew for the first time two weeks after surgery and again about a month later and I didn't have any problems either time. My flights were about 2 and a half hours each way
  16. The very best advice I can give is to begin the Atkins style diet on the day you begin your process. Transition to the liquid diet when it is time and stick to it. The goal is to lose weight.....not to hold off until you've had surgery to lose weight. Every pound you get off this week will get you closer to your goal. The liquid diet is short and you'll do a version of it post op while your stomach heals. You won't experience hunger after a sleeve surgery, most likely, either. If you do, it's mostly head-hunger that you need to fight through and it will subside and not longer bother you after a couple weeks. I did a mix of pre-made and powdered Protein drinks. The powdered ones were always mixed with ice and Water......never milk. I saw no need to use milk for anything.....too much sugar in it. Premier Protein is fairly thin but provides 30 grams of protein. All three flavors were good to me. Pure Protein is very thick and filling and provides 20+ grams. The chocolate is awesome. I relied heavily on the thicker Pure Protein prior to surgery and then more Premier Protein afterwards. Stay as active as you can before your surgery.....it will most certainly help you recover more swiftly. I wish I'd done better with this aspect.

    Could Cry Right Now

I feel your pain...I contacted my PCP almost a week ago in regards to faxing over my medical clearance letter and as of today it still hadn't been received. After calling the office I now have to wait again. I have done all that has been asked of me during the past 6 months and I got the most disturbing ohone call this morning saying that I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Although I know being over weight comes with a lot of health risks I thought that I had just been lucky to not have had high blood pressure, diabetes, or any other weight related condition, but it never crossed my mind that sleep apnea would be something I now have to deal with. Not only that next week when all my paperwork is submitted to the insurance company its still not a guarantee that the surgery will be approved so I just feel like pulling all of my hair out. Anyone else having to deal with this?
  18. Anyone else headed to TJ for Dr Ortiz this week? I was sleeved by him last November but have not lost any weight. Because I had a revision from a band he thinks I had too much scar tissue to get a small enough sleeve. So, I am going back. He said this is ony the 2nd time he has had this problem. and, NO cost to me.
  19. I'm feeling your pain! I'm on day 9 and I have a week to go. My doc put me on two shakes a day, and one meal w/4oz of Protein and veggies on the side. The first three days I had a migraine. I just wanted to die I was so miserable. I added fat free Soup with veggies in it (remember the cabbage soup diet) so aside from from the toxic protein shake farts I got to ramp those up to eye watering paint peeling farts! Good Gawd Almighty!! I had to find an isolated spot at my job to hide and toot. I'd stagger out of my hidey hole praying no one had heard nor followed me. And to add insult to injury, I was really jazzed that I had lost 5.5 lbs in one week, then DH made corned beef for dinner yesterday. I gained back 1.5 pounds!! Damn that Water weight! And I'm supposed to weigh in on my preop appointment on Friday. I only needed to drop 4 pounds, but ya know, sh*t happens and I may magically grow an extra udder or something, what with all these Protein Shakes. Or maybe I'll get so constipated that it will skew my results. *sigh* We just gotta hang on, August 3rd is right around the corner for you, and I'm right behind you. AND I like to think that eating this way is prepping us for good post-op behavior. Did that make you feel better?? Go on and treat yourself to a sf popsicle! We're almost there!!:cursing:
  20. This has been a long relationship with plenty of ups and downs along the way. Love/Hate comes to mind. Before surgery I composed a list of goals and getting rid of the CPAP is on there twice. Being hooked up to a device drove me nuts at times, but over the years I also gained a certain amount of security from it. The white noise of the swooshing air helped get me back to sleep during my frequent wake-ups in the night but a lot of the time it was the machine itself waking me up (not being strapped on properly, the nose pillows coming loose, etc.). We went away for three nights and it was wonderful not having to pack up my machine and set it all up in the hotel room. I gave it a few more days as an experiment once home, and while I plan to keep it in a closet somewhere just in case I am delighted to have it off of my bedside table. Yippee! Oh, and I looked up my measurements to check: I have lost 2 inches off of my neck. That's a lot, for a neck. My waist? This one is kind of a shocker: 8 inches. Wow! No more Mrs. Winnie-the-Pooh and no more CPAP.
  21. Thanks so much for the link. I read every post and wrote down a lot of information. I may start on the pre-op diet next week since I'm hoping to get approved for a late August surgery. Better safe than sorry!
  22. I was just wondering how long we have to avoid drinking out of straws? Not a huge issue, but it would make it easier to drink protein shakes if I could use a straw ???? I am almost 3 weeks out from surgery. My diet is mostly protein shakes, Greek yogurts, and clear broth with added unflavored protein at this point.
  23. I set a overall goal of 150 but my mini goals are 1-2 pounds a week. As long as I am doing that I feel I'll reach the overall goal eventually. I weigh each Wednesday morning on my scale and don't weigh on any other scale. So far it's good.
  24. Okay so I'm about 3 weeks post op, and today I noticed that the right side, under my rib cage is is slightly tender and rock hard. I think it may be my liver, just from an anatomical aspect. I have no incisions nearby, so I know it's not my port or anything like that (that I can feel under the port incision, so I'm really sure about that). Any thoughts? Like I said, mildly sore, but really hard, so I'm not sure if this is normal or if I should worry. Has this happened to anyone else?
  25. What are you eating? If you are not and only drinking the tightening (fill) won't help. My suggestion is stay away from Starbucks or wherever younarengetting your drinks. You have to break the habit, once you do your taste buds may change. Mine did, but it took a couple weeks of staying away from the sugary drinks and now I can't stand the taste. Find a substitute. I make my own tee and flavored drinks using truvia. I know it is hard, but you can do it. I also find that logging everything keeps me accountable. I love food, so I don't drink my calories.
