Gastric bypass- endoscopic revision
polishanita replied to pattyoj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If you don’t mind me asking, what is the reason for the revision? I am a rny patient. 6 yrs out. I had lost 170 pounds and now have regain 50. This puts me 100 from my goal weight. I am hoping a revision would jumpstart my weight loss again and help me reach my goal weight. -
3 week stall...I guess
XtinaDoesIt replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for sharing this! In my head I figured the first 3 months were an indicator of how the rest of the process is going to go. Minus my preop weight loss, I've lost 18 lbs so far, a month and a half in... BUT it does look like I might have broke my second stall (YAY), down again this morning. -
Why did you pick such a high goal weight? Your BMI is STILL overweight!
catwoman7 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Rants & Raves
I'm kinda late in replying to the subject at hand, but I wanted to add that in addition to all the comments about "best weight", etc, which I completely agree with, my dietitian has always let us know that BMI doesn't always "work" with WLS patients (as it often doesn't "work" for some other categories, like athletes, either). We often have more "infrastructure" than never-been-obese people - i.e, heavier bones and muscles that we needed to hold up all that weight. Of course, we lose some of that as we lose weight, too - but even after massive weight loss, they're still often heavier than they are for "normies". -

I am simply appalled that someone on this forum said that to you. Each and everyone's weight loss journey is their own. That person sounds self-righteous and may be dealing with negativity outside of this community in regards to their own weight loss journey. I wish they receive the mental help that they need. I know for myself at 5'3", I don't look so bad at 170. Our body make-ups are different as well. I have an athletic build, and if you are 5'9" and have a build anywhere near to the way mine is, I understand! Live your best life! Do not let anyone make those decisions for you. You know what's best for you. When you look in the mirror and smile, that is the important part...not what anyone here or elsewhere has to say about it. Stay positive. -
I "snuck" having WLS
Terri77 replied to chiquitatummy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I told my family and friends. I did not tell my co-workers. As one member said, "some people can be very opinionated". I did this for myself, for my health, and for my quality of life. I am beginning to feel better emotionally already just 6 days post-op. I feel like the constant struggle is over. The loss of weight, the gain of weight, the stagnant non-loss of weight. The light at the end of the tunnel is bright. -
I am 8 weeks out and no stall for me but my friend has been stalled for a few weeks. My loss is slow compared to many others at 1.5-3 pounds per week.

Pre-op plans vary significantly. Some surgeons require a two week (or more) program regardless of the personal circumstances of the person. Other surgeons will tailor their pre op program to the person, Some surgeons don't do a pre-op plan regardless, just a typical pre surgery plan which would apply regardless of the surgery. I imagine your pre-op plan for one day would be just fluids? It may be that our surgeon doesn't do a typical WLS pre-op plan or based on your personal circumsances a pre-op weight loss diet (to lose weight or shrink liver) is not required. May be worth your while to talk to your surgeon or their staff about your confusion, they would be able to explain to you better than we could why the surgeon has given you the pre op plan of one day only.

Hi Everyone I am one month post op today (3/23/21) from my laparoscopic VSG surgery. Everything is going fine. I was a low BMI patient and my weightloss seems to be in the normal range with a -19 lb loss in the month so far. I am eating soft foods now and getting my 64oz of liquid in. My incisions have healed fine. However, a few days ago i started having intense pain about 2 inches above my belly button. Its continuous and very tender to the touch. It feels like a very painful bruise or a sore muscle. Has anyone experienced this? Its hard for me to wear my usual leggings because it sits right where that pain is. I was able to sleep on my stomach soon after surgery but not anymore. Any insight is appreciated. Lucy

Arabesque replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it’s very normal. We all experienced at least one stall along the way. It’s just your body playing catch up - it’s been through a lot & will continue to do so while you’re losing. You’ll start to notice the weight dropping again. Just give it time & stick to your plan. Congratulations on your weight loss so far. PS - you’re so lucky that your bms are normal. -

That is brilliant! I wish more doctors would take this approach. One of my biggest regrets in life is all of the years I spent yo-yo dieting. The first time I went on a diet as a pre-teen, I wasn't even that fat, but I got stuck in a cycle of dieting and gaining it all back plus more. I honestly think that if I had known then about how harmful yo-yo dieting is, I never would have ended up so big that I needed weight loss surgery. Maybe if I had a doctor or dietitian who had told me all of this, I could have found my "best weight" instead of striving for something that I couldn't sustain. I am still trying to figure out what this looks like for my post-surgery self. I have been doing everything right since my surgery -- eating the right foods and quantities, drinking plenty of water, working out every day -- but it is exhausting and I often wonder how long I will be able to keep it up. For me, I think working out will be the sticking point because I hate it. I found something that I can put up with (Leslie Sansone videos on YouTube -- I've tried other ones but they all seem to fall short of Leslie's), but I still dread it. I get up early so I can get it out of the way before work, but I hate getting up so early, too. I am actually pretty good with the food because I have found so many delicious bariatric-friendly recipes that I truly enjoy eating, although I still feel sad sometimes when I see other people enjoying food that I can't eat. -
Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Tijuana/Experiences
Dennis Moore posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello, I'm considering getting Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Tijuana Mexico. My Health Insurance will not cover for me to get weight loss surgery, and Mexico is the cheaper option for me. Can anyone share their experiences/ weight loss/cost with me for surgery either in Mexico or the United States? -
A couple years ago I was prescribed Phentermine from a weight loss doctor/family physician. It worked wonders and did exactly what I needed it to do, lose the extra 15 pounds diet and exercise wouldn't work to lose. Sadly i gained some weight with this pandemic and would like to try Phentermine again, but the doctor retired and I'm not looking to see a huge weight loss clinic type setting. Was wondering if anyone knew of a doctor they could recommend in the Cherry Hill area that I could possibly use? Any info would be greatly appreciated, Sara

Hey all. Wasn’t sure what section to post this in. Question for those with tattoos and skin removal. I’m looking at tattoos on the front/ outside of my thighs and or the outside of my arm or shoulder blade area. I do know I want skin removal once I finish the rest of my weight loss. I am about half way. With the skin removal did your tattoos get stretched or warp in these areas with the continue right loss?

No weight loss after 2 weeks of surgery! Please help

Welcome to the forum! Relax, it's normal. Search this forum for "three weeks stall" or just "stall". We've all been thru it. Just stick with your eating routine and the weight loss will get going again. -

I concur. Do your research, but in my research I have found that lap bands have the most problems and patients are more likely to need them removed and do a different surgery instead. CLIF NOTES summary of the two most common other gastric surgeries in laymen terms: I think most docs now prefer the gastric sleeve for a majority of their patients (but NOT ALL). Yes, you are removing a large portion of your stomach, but your stomach still functions to do what it needs to do.... it is just a lot smaller. But the stomach is resilient and stretchable so over time it will accommodate more food than it does in the early months. And the rest of your body parts are in tact. It is a simple surgery procedure wise. Still a major abdominal surgery as any other abdominal surgery... but no more complicated than most other frequent abdominal surgeries. Gastric Bypass makes the stomach smaller with staples and rearranges the plumbing a bit. Therefore it changes how your digestive system works. BUT... may be the preferred surgery in SOME cases... such as those with diabetes (not all diabetics do this one, but I see more that do this one). This surgery is a little more complex, but in some cases it is the recommended procedure. Both procedures will get the job done if you work the program as prescribed by your team. Your degree of success is usually dependent on you being willing to put in the hard work that goes with ANY weight loss program... and how you use your new weight loss "tool". Anyhow... there are a lot of great sources of information about these and other WLS procedures. Do some research. Have an idea what you might want to get done and why.... and consult a WL Surgeon. For my surgeon, the first questions he asked are what have I done to try to lose weight before, why do I want surgery, and what procedure I wanted and why. Then he went on to tell me what he thought and made his recommendation. Anyhow.... most WL Surgeons hold free group information sessions where someone from their staff or even the surgeon themselves give a presentation and overview of the procedures and the qualification requirements. I waited a long time to attend because I was so nervous about it... but I now wish I had gone sooner! Also... feel free to attend them through different surgeons offices in your area. I think locally we have 3 groups who do the surgery at 3 different hospitals. I like my team a lot... but I wish I had shopped around first for the doc team. I might have still picked the same guy... but I just went with who my referral was through.... but I am quite certain my insurance covered at least 2/3 teams. Anyhow... do your research and whatever procedure you chose, lap band, sleeve, bypass or other..... we will support you as best as we can! -

OP, please do some thorough research before you commit to the lap-band. "In the best study we have on just how problematic lap band surgeries can be, published in JAMA in May, researchers from the University of Michigan looked at 16 years of Medicare data to see how common “re-operations” were after the first lap band procedure. These involved everything from removing the band to replacing it, fixing it, or following the initial procedure with another weight loss operation (i.e., the gastric bypass). They found 20 percent — or one in five — of the 25,000 lap band patients needed an additional procedure. That’s much higher than the 3 to 9 percent re-operation rate for the gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries." https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/5/25/15659878/weight-loss-surgery-lap-band-evidence -
Progressing okay n starting on IF

Agreed, with the caveat that some clinics' prescribed plan IS low-carb. My surgeon's plan is one of those - not quite low enough to be keto but definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. It stayed that way during weight loss and gradually introduced higher carbs as maintenance approached. OP, IF this early does seem like overkill, given how little most of us can eat when we're just a month out. Maybe save IF for later when your weight loss has slowed down? Just a thought. -

I agree. At this point, you should be following your clinic's plan. There are WLS patients who do follow Keto, but they're quite a ways out from surgery. stalls are a very normal part of a weight loss journey. If you stick to your eating plan, they WILL break. -
Hello everyone. I’m Marissa and I had gastric bypass in October of 2020. I’m roughly 5.5 months post op from having the surgery at Baptist Bariatrics. With my surgeon being Dr H. I’m writing to introduce myself. HW 292 SW 273 CW 207 GW 150. I’m doing my best to reach Onederland so any advise is welcome.

Tomorrow I will be 12 weeks post op gastric sleeve and I've only lost 40 lbs. I don't eat what I'm not supposed to, so I don't understand why I'm not loosing as fast. My appointment with Dr. is in April, and at the 2 week appointment he said I should be around 60lb loss by April. I will admit that exercising is my biggest struggle. I feel so frustrated [emoji24] Sent from my SM-N981U using BariatricPal mobile app

Anyone else have issues with restaurants!
kellym1220 replied to Shanibani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm so sorry that you feel this way! I have been eating out fairly regularly since about 2 months out. Did it slow my weight loss? Possibly. But I am significantly happier! I went to a thing called magical dining in September, where it's a three course meal, twice, Once, I ordered salmon with a tuna appetizer (I know you don't like seafood, I love it as long as I don't have to cook it!) and the next time I ordered filet mignon and some sort of soup. Both times, I ate about 1/2 of the appetizer, 1/3 of the protein and a bite or two of the sides and then one bite of the dessert and then packed it in a doggy bag and brought it home to my son. If my son wasn't the sort to eat JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING, I would have eaten the leftovers over the next two days! I've had fajitas and refried beans at a Mexican restaurant and a sashimi appetizer at a sushi restaurant. I haven't eaten Italian (too tempting, although I might order veal or chicken piccata, it I did!) I focus on eating the protein first and then take a bite or two of the sides. I ALWAYS look at the menu on line and figure out what I can eat and WANT to eat. Luckily, my family lets me lead the charge on where we go, so I can find somewhere that has something I want to eat. So anyway, long post, but don't give up. Two months is still early and you should be able to enjoy food a bit sooner or later. I hope you can find that balance! Good luck. -
at around 3-4 mo after surgery, i started to lose my hair.. and i had long hair, down to the mid of my back. i cut it above my shoulders (first time in yyeeeears) because i didnt want to keep dealing with the long hairs everywhere. im 8 months out and its slowed down a good bit.. but i still need to take biotin because i want to start growing it out again and i have a lot of baby hairs from where its starting to grow back. it's a small price to pay, though. just make sure you take ur vitamins and get ur protein in.

Yes. Except it happened to me at 5 months out. It's sort of happening again but I think my loss is just super slow now. Most here thought it was maintenance mode instead of a stall and that was probably 100% correct since I wasn't tracking my food. I've since upped my protein from 60 to at least 81 or above. Surgeon's office is okay with slow loss since I was under 200 pounds when I had surgery. Tracking is helpful. I never realized how many calories I was adding to get in my protein. All the unflavored protein powder, collagen powder, etc., can really add up fast! Losing slowly does suck. I hear you. I'm also trying to up my exercise.

I was thinning before surgery and surgery just vamped up the process. I just embraced what I could not change and now wear toppers. I have three and no longer spend money getting my hair done, just put on a topper (I have different styles and lengths) and I’m good to go, I actually love it!
