So when I say I hate the gym...

Me Too! I have a friend who recenttly went to school to become a PersonalTrainer. I otld her I will be her first client- and she has ONE job only -- to make me LIKE excercise! I only like to swim, and don't do it often because it is too much work to change, etc, and the community center is $6 every time-- it can add up. I used to like bike riding when I was much younger, so I may resurrect my neglected bike soon., So...I started walking in May with a friend - we mostly walk at the high school track so we can easily measure our distance and it has a softer surface to help our knees/backs. The only reason I "like" it is because she and I talk the whole time! And if she cancels, I don't go. We do 1-2-or 3 nights, depending on our schedule--but I figure even one time a week is better than zero. I started with the personal trainer 2x per week- Mondays and Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. Do I LIKE it? Not yet. But I do have a sense of accomplishment when I finish that hour. And in four sessions, I went from the 3 lb weights feeling "heavy" to being able to do the same move wiht 8 lb weights!!!! WIll I EVER like excercise????? The other good part is that we meet at her house, so I am not embarrassed at a gym. I am amazed at how many excercises I do not know how to do. These initial sessions have really been about learning some different moves. Apparently I am not all that coordinated - if I am going to remember to breathe, move a certian way, and count, I just cannot do it Oh--really wanted a Wii and made sure I got Wii fit at Christmas time-- I have NEVER touched it and don't even know how to operate it. My daughters will be showing me this when the cold weather comes again. But it is a bit embarrassing that I wanted it and had big plans and haven't used it yet. You are a bit ahead as you like to hike- are there new places you could visit-parks, etc in your area so you could at least vary your routine and your view?
  3. Hello everyone! My name is Laura, and I from Denison, TX... born and raised. I've been preparing for my lap-band journey for a couple of months now, and just had my first one-on-one visit with the doctor. 6 months or so from now I will be ready to have the surgery. I am 5'8.5 inches and weigh in at a whopping 299 lbs. My goal weight is 150 lbs, but if I lose more that's fine too. But I will be happy with 150. I haven't been really fat my entire life, I was a chubby little kid but after I started growing taller I lost the baby fat. When I graduated high school I was slim, but I started gaining weight, about 20 lbs in college then 30 after I had to drop out. I gained a lot of weight after I started getting Depo-Provera birth control shots in 1998. I gained about 40 lbs in 4 months. Then I started working a night shift a couple of years later and that's where I've gained the last 60 or so lbs. I kept thinking I'll get around to it... join a gym, start eating better... but all of a sudden I looked up and 11 years have passed by in the blink of an eye. Sure I've done all kinds of diets, but I'm very headstrong. I'm a grown woman if I want to eat cheesecake or a cheeseburger Imma gon' do it, no matter what the consequences may be. So I don't stick to diets for very long. I don't hold myself accountable when it comes to food. But I'm ready to start, and I know that I will need the help that the lap-band and the doctors office will provide me. I'm ready to eat whatever they tell me to eat and not eat what they tell me not to eat. I'm ready to start getting the exericse I need. I'm actually looking forward to that part, I love to excercise. I'm going to start that during the next six months. It's been awhile since I've actually exercised on a regular basis. I have psoriatic arthritis. I've had psoriasis for most of my life, and the arthritis started about 8 yrs ago. I was diagnosed 6 yrs ago, and have been on medication for it since then. My rheumatologist is almost as excited about this as I am, he says I'm carrying an extra person around with me with all this extra weight. He thinks I might be able to stop the meds or at least lower the dosages when I get healthy. I'm glad this forum is here, I've learned a lot just reading the posts. I hope to get to know more people soon... See ya, Laura

    100lbs gone!

Congratulations! I was banded two days ago and am so thrilled to hear about your positive results. I know how hard it's been for you and look forward to hearing more about your journey. I've been going back and forth, up and down the last month. I can finally say 100lbs is gone from my life never to be seen again! WOOHOO!! I have really worked hard. Exercised consistently. Listened to my Doctor. Keep looking forward and never look back. I don't beat myself up for the occasional slip up just start new with every meal. I weigh myself everyday but only record it weekly. When it is the same for a couple of days I know I have to switch it up (food and exercise) and I try hard not to get upset by the number. I have been successful with that. I need to weigh myself daily. It is a check in for me and it works. I know that is not right for everyone though, just what worked for me. I have really tried to stay positive through this journey. I look ahead to what new things I can try as I lose weight. I really want to go ziplining and skydiving! I want to have another baby. I want to shop in a regular store and not plus size. I want to cross my legs. I am so excited for what's to come in my life. Seven months ago I took the first step to living a happy and healthy life. While it has also been the most emotional and difficult journey I have ever been on, at the end of the day I love every second of my new life. I am so happy!
  5. AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I totally can't wait... TOTALLY!!!!!!!! ...about not eating, well that's what got us here in the first place! I need that taken away, there is no other way this is even going to happen (losing weight I mean). Congratulations to you! Dansha you are such an amazing inspiration to me. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us!!!:001_wub:

    Newbie:))

I'm 5'2 and 219, my BMI was 40. My insurance required I have a BMI IF 40 but as a self pay I only had to be 50 lbs over weight which I far exceeded. I don't see you having an issue. Good luck!

    Newbie:))

Welcome! It is normal to be a little scared but you have come to the right place. Every insurance company has different requirements for you to qualify for surgery but they can give you a general idea at the info session you are attending. Do you have any health problems as a result of your weight (high blood pressure, sleep apnea, things of that nature)?

    Nervous and 2nd guessing

Thank you for the encouragement. Still head vs health. My head says I'm not that obese. I dont have any comorbidity. I have lived my whole life over weight and at 35 both my parents has passed away from major health issues. I'm trying to do what I can to live healthy because I can't change my genetics. I have a son who I want to see achieve great things . I miss my mom and dad so much and I grieve the time he ( my son) has lost with them. So I'm in it to get healthy and live a healthy lifestyle. Praying my nerves don't get the best of me.
  9. I drank a Protein shake last night - all I could get down was 3oz. I added Peanut Butter (1 tablespoon) to it which made it sooooooo much better! I jumped on the scale this morning to see how I have been doing and much to my surprise I am down a total 21.6 lbs since Jan 2!!! I am so freaking happy!!!!! I am now 6 days post op. I spoke with the nurse yesterday and told her about my weight loss, she orginally told me that she didn't even think I would be done 23 lbs. by June. She was very surprised. I go back to see the doc in a few days and see what he says.

This is about me, not you.

I am doing the surgery with a low BMI too. 19 days until surgery. I have told my mother and son. That's it. No one from work or anyone else. I have gained every year. Just 5 years ago I weighed 50 pounds less. I know the way I was coping was a losing battle. I am tired. I want my body back. I want to smile. I want to get dress and not put something back because it won't go over my thighs. I want to stop buying cheap clothes on sale because they fit. I want to go to the beach and wear a swimsuit. I want to actually look in the mirror instead of rushing past it because I don't like the reflection. You are not alone. This is about you. It is your turn. new from philly!

Well Angela, I think you need to think of the long term effects that type 2 diabetes can have on you. Sooner or later you'll probably have more and more medical problems. From what I've heard on this site, the success rates of this surgery sure beats continuing with diabetes. Many that I've read actually get off insulin after taking off some or all of their excess weight. I've started the process....I've done the hardest part .... making that first call for initial doctor appointment. Good luck with your decision. It sounds like your dad would be supportive of you in this, so I say Go For It!!

    new from philly!

I have also been on every diet since I was 9 yr old. I am working on being approved. My regular Dr. and my pulmonary Dr. want me to get it done for health reasons. Losing the weight hasn't always been the problem for me its keeping it off thats almost impossible for me to do. I focus for a while and then I lose focus. I'm hoping the Lap Band will remind me to stay focused when I'm about to lose it.
  13. I'm three days out and starving. I'm on a liquid diet for 10 days then I can add some small things - my whole plan is in food and Nutrition under post plans. I've been getting 40 grams of Protein guaranteed with Isopure, Jello made with IsoPure 8 grams of protein per serving, I've had broth, some ice cream for calories and sugar since everything is sugar free and I have naturally low blood sugar. Since I can't add any actual food for another seven days I imagine I'll stay hungry. I'm down 3 lbs since surgery and it's unlikely it's Water weight as I've been drinking over 60 oz a day. Prior to surgery this was a main issue for me. I'm always hungry even just after eating. I'm hoping the band will help with some of that, though it's not known to depress hunger much despite applying pressure to the vagas nerve.

    Crap...too tight?

Good advice all - thanks HB - I know what you mean about messing with the sweet spot. I have considered that alternative, but feel so unsure about it. The first thing I'm trying to discern is whether I'm actually too tight or not. Today went "ok" but not great. I never actually was "stuck" but I can only eat like 4-5 bites of ANYTHING at one time, and then I just have to stop. I found myself "grazing" today just to get enough calories in. I even tried eating some of a cinnamon roll, still could eat very little of it (after chewing it to mush). I think a small unfill is in order. I would probably wait it out a while longer if I wasn't traveling, but I really don't want to get into trouble out there. I'm going to help take care of my sis' family while she recovers from an operation. I don't want any attention on me, that's for sure. I can sure see how the weight would fall off if I stayed like this, but it doesn't seem healthy. I haven't done too well on the veggies the last couple of days...I'm going to give those a shot tomorrow and see how I do. Thanks all!

    Just getting Started!

Hi, thanks for the wish of good luck... I am still going back and forth with this... one minute I am excited and the next I am second guessing myself. I am hoping your surgery went well and I see that you have already lost a good amount of weight! CONGRATS on that ... I hope your healing well.....

    My First Nsv!!!

Even though I just had surgery on Monday, I've already had a non scale victory! When I logged today's weight into my fitness pal, it said because I had lost more than 10 pounds, they had to recalculate my goals. I know my calorie goal was over 1300 (which I thought was a bit much) but now it's down 1240. I'm totally psyched! I'm not logging my food right now because I'm just on full liquids. I'm nowhere close to the amount of calories I should be having, so I don't see the sense in it. I love this app!!

    Should I Or Shouldn't I?

As others have posted, a successful weight loss journey with the band requires significant lifestyle changes. Your original post indicates that you are currently working in an environment where your food triggers are constantly around you. Not an ideal situation unless you develop the willpower to say no to eating beyond what you should. Weight loss with the band requires you to make good menu choices and manage your portions carefully, along with regular exercise. I also had health issues and was facing an official diagnosis of Type II diabetes which pushed me to choose to have my band placed. I was pleased to read that you are carefully considering your options about the band surgery, for it is not without risks. Previous to the band surgery, I had only had 1 surgery and 1 hospitalization all my adult life, with the exception of the birth of my children. Since having my band surgery, I have required 2 hospitalizations and 1 surgery. These were not directly caused by my band, however they were related to weight loss and the band increased the circumstances to the level of needing to be in the hospital. Whatever your decision is, be certain that you approach it with an open mind and be certain that this choice is being made by your own motivation and not others. Best wishes for your weight loss success...

  21. Wendy, Hi. I had a very serious health scare so I had a lot of motivation to make this work. I had a stroke at 39 that doctors could not say with an absolute certainty was caused by my weight but they also would not rule it out. I live in southern NH and chose Lahey becaue it's a great hospital and they do not have a "Program Fee" (additional fee charged on top of insurance). As to weight loss even presurgery I was on a pretty strick eating and exercise regiment. Through the therapy sessions I learned what my triggers were for mindless eating. I cut out all crackers, chips, Cereal, etc even reduced or fat free. In the 7.5 months from consult to surgery I ate a pretty low carb/fat diet; and did an hour of Water based cardio seven days a week. I highly recommend water based exercise, as it is so much better on the joints of the overweight. Water proof MP3 player is a must for lap swimming. I also use a snorkle which allows me to swim longer.
  22. I'm post op day 4 and looking for some progress to go off on. Starting weight was 250, surgery weight was 242. I'm sore, in pain and in the regret phase due to the pain right now. I need some motivators, please.

    New Here And Question

My insurance (BCBS) required me to loose 5% of my weight before the dr.'s office could send my papers in for approval. I did the "liquid pre-op diet" to loose my required weight. I figured it was a good way to get used to the diet I was gonna have to do later on.
  24. I'm so ecstatic I could scream! Just had my 6 month check up. I've lost 55% of my body fat only 25% left to lose!! Also only 30lbs left until I reach my goal weight!! I'm so pumped I went and bought some new clothes at my favorite clothing store- NY&C - mind you I changed there into an outfit I just bought - they offered me a job!! Ahh I'm truly loving life right now

    Any Good Books?

When I went for my psych evaluation, the Dr. suggested 2 books: Eating Mindfully: How to End Mindless Eating and Enjoy a Balanced Relationship with food and The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person. They also have this on CD and there's a workbook you can buy that goes with it. He said they are both good since they don't focus on a specific diet but on changing the way you think about food and yourself. I have both but have only started reading the first one yesterday. I also have The Sleeved Life and that was a good book, depending on how much research you have already done. If you are far into the process, you may not learn too much but it's still a good read. I also ordered recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery, Revised and Updated: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You and the Latest Information on Lower-BMI Gastric Banding Procedures. I reviewed it and have begun to mark recipes that I'm going to test. The best part of this book is that it associates each meal with which phase you are in. So it has liquid, puree, soft, mechanically soft and regular meals. It also gives you eating tips for the type of bariatric surgery you are getting. This is one of the few that specifically discussed The Sleeve. Hope this helps.
