I was thinking about your post and remembering how good it felt to hit this current weight when I was losing and how bad it feels to be at this weight when I've regained. The weight, of course, is the same. But my perception of myself is very different. I also need to connect with the person I was six years ago - what was I eating? what were the daily habits that supported the weight loss I was experiencing? how did doing those things affect my self-image? Thanks for sharing your experience and for hearing mine.

Trying to Reach Ideal Body Weight?
Spinoza replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I say too thin for me I mean I remember my mother saying years ago that after a certain age when losing weight you have to choose between your face and your arse (pardon the vulgarity) and I intend to choose my face because more people see that -
Trying to Reach Ideal Body Weight?
Spinoza replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon asked me what I wanted to achieve in my life (I said to get back to running again, and laughed inwardly as I said it but of course I am now)! He told me that the average loss was 60-70% of excess weight and I'm already past that. My final completely arbitrary goal is 160 lbs but honestly if I stopped losing today at 170 I would still view that as an *enormous* win, even with the chance of a regain in year 2 or 3, which happens to a lot of folks. My 'ideal' body weight is apparently 145 (just went to an online calculator), which I think would be too thin for me. I have no intention of restricting my diet in order to maintain some unachievable final weight that I have in my head - I've spent a lifetime doing that. I want to relax into my new life and enjoy it! -
Oh I love reading this thread - we all have different approaches and they're all valid. I told my husband and children, my work manager because I needed time off and couldn't lie, and nobody else, and am not going to. I do get the occasional twinge of guilt when family and friends comment on my weight loss but as far as they are concerned I am 'strictly calorie counting' (which technically speaking isn't a lie). I would rather live with that occasional guilt than deal with/respond to their reactions, whether supportive or critical. I don't like a fuss. That's just me though. To each their own Good luck whatever you decide.

What to pack for hospital stay and things needed post op once at home?
Gonebacktohealthyandfit replied to Bricam20's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I brought a loose fitting t-shirt dress to wear home, just like Tomo did. At the hospital, I slept and walked the halls around and around, in between them taking bloodwork or checking vitals every 2 hours. The next morning (one night stay) after showing that I could drink all of my fluids, I was discharged early evening. ⭐ Items I brought in small overnight bag - you won'r need much! ⭐ 1. Light-weight robe (walking the halls) 2. Slippers 3. Phone, phone charger 4. Toiletries (toothbrush, paste, shampoo, conditioner) 5. Loose fitting cotton dress to wear home/extra underwear 6. If you don't already have one, it's definitely worth investing in a heating pad for when you get home. It helps the soreness of your tummy SO MUCH! The hospital will have one for you to use while you're there. The dress is Universal Threads Knit Tank dress from Target ($15) . Sooooooooooo comfy!!!!!!! Here's the thread in case you want to check it out. https://www.target.com/p/women-39-s-racer-back-knit-tank-dress-universal-thread-8482-green-m/-/A-84777392?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000014846111&CPNG=PLA_Women%2BShopping_Brand|Women_Ecomm_AA&adgroup=SC_Women&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9031508&targetid=pla-300925489891&ds_rl=1241788&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&gclid=Cj0KCQjw54iXBhCXARIsADWpsG84noB9hlvFUs5V9l4BFt4xeDVXndX96CxW8Ht5cMV-UYdDMiivD2oaAubsEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds * Tip - the more you walk, the better you'll feel and eliminate gas pains Good luck to you!!! You're going to do great and be so happy to be on the other side!!! -
October surgery friends??
ann2472 replied to LyricalWarfare's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Meganatorthat's awesome!!! I've lost 80 total since March 2021, surgery was October and since then I have lost 66. 12# to goal for me, but I feel like you. See what my body does. Weight loss has slowed considerably but I'm feeling great. Not sure if size 10 pants will be where I get-it was a wish but 12s are fitting pretty well most of the time so that's good with me! Health is improved and hope to continue. Congratulations to you! -
Hi Mel I’m also 6 year post op and I, too, have gained 15 lbs. Had an interesting conversation with a friend today who said the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but connection. Could that be true for you? Are you missing some kind of connection in your life? I think for me, it might be connection to my body. I tend to live in my head, and take my body for granted. Hope you find a way through this dark time. Take care of yourself.

I chose to only discuss with my husband and healthcare providers. I'm so happy with my decision to have the procedure and have no shame, regret or embarrassment. However, I know from a wealth of experience that outside of my husband, the remainder of my family is the opposite of me - extroverted, telling everyone their own business plus everyone else's - including mine. My wanting control of the situation is what it really boiled down to. It would have became everyone's business (picture multiple church phone trees activated simultaneously) if I had let a peep of it out. Also, a pet peeve of mine that my extended family makes a habit of is using "you've lost weight" as their go to complement or conversation starter whether it's true or not. I've been working over the years to help them see these comments can be hurtful and we're making progress finally. If they knew I had the procedure I suspect it would return to free range season on comments about mine and everybody's else's body - not OK. On an aside, I also did not tell my children. My husband did not agree with this out of the rare chance that the "worst" might happen (spoiler alert - it didn't). Ultimately, I didn't want to put the pressure of not discussing it outside of our nuclear family on them or the worry during the procedure. They are old enough to be left alone for a few hours and we do not have babysitting options, I couldn't bear the thought of them alone at home worrying. So, I had a "business trip" earlier this month. They have asked questions about why I'm eating so little and I just tell them I'm trying to get healthier so my portions are smaller.

It has been soooo long since I posted here, probably not since I was a few months post op back in 2016. I am now 6 years post-op (July 26) and have found myself really really struggling. I have gained 15 lbs. I know that may not seem like a lot to some people but I feel like I have made it so far and damn, why is this starting. I mean I know why. I'm eating poorly, I am relying on my sleeve to trigger my full feelings but I am def eating whatever I want, dumping, and doing it again. I am going through a rough time emotionally and I have restarted therapy but man I am finding it hard to not to eat my feelings. And what I eat is what I call punishment or self hate food: anything fried, fettuccine Alfredo, pizza...etc. I'm just so in it right now and the weight gain is compounding it. I stopped working out because of the pandemic, my studio shut down...sorry feeling so sorry for myself but I am scared I will end up looking like I did 6 years ago and hating myself even more.

Trying to Reach Ideal Body Weight?
DonnaGS replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
No one on my Dr's office asked me what the goal weight is. I want to be healthy, I'm thinking 120-140. I was 120 after graduating from high school and after having both kids. I'm losing very slow (insulin resistance) I've heard after the "honeymoon" period its harder to loose. So I'm trying to keep my mind open. My surgeon said the average person losses 50 pounds, that would put me at a much healthier weight, but I would be chubby still. -
Reminds me of two myths: 1) WLS is the easy way out. (It's definitely not easy, It is a great tool but it takes dedication and hard work. A lifelong battle. Your husband will see that as you progress through your journey. Maybe he will come to understand what we are up against.) 2) WLS is a magic pill. (WLS only works long term if you work at it. Some people aren't willing to do what it takes which is their choice but their weight loss will cease early. Guessing calories is usually inaccurate so tracking nutrition helps see why or why not one is losing weight.).

Scheduled date 9/19 with Dr. Shillingford
jraymond270 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, I am nervous but excited at the same time regarding finally making the move to schedule my date and start my new weight loss journey. I was wondering if anyone has had their VSG with Dr. Shillingford and if your surgery was done in Palm Beach Gardens. I am as I mentioned nervous but know it will all turn out fine. Also what pre-op items did you have do complete prior to surgery. Thanks in advance for answering my questions. -
Hi July friends! Well, I’m two weeks and a day out from surgery today. Everything is fantastic so far. Just some very mild ache in the healing incision area when I first get up in the morning. I don’t know how much weight I’ve lost but my clothes are far more comfortable. I’ll weigh myself next week because they’ll ask at my next appointment but I’m trying to focus on being healthy and strong which works best for my personal mental health. Every food I have tried so far I have tolerated just fine. I just progressed to “mechanical” food which sounds very space-age but really is just anything you don’t have to cut with a knife. I’m going to try some fish this weekend. Chicken was just fine (I chewed it well) and cooked vegetables. Also scrambled egg and egg salad and egg foo yong made with minced chicken. A lot of eggs. For now I am not being very adventurous as I’m finishing off all the food I cooked and prepped for the soft stage. I am still drinking one shake a day to get to 80-90g protein. I can’t do it without the shake or I’d be eating all day. Hope you are all having a wonderful day and sending good healing thoughts to the folks who had/are having surgery this week. Cay

100+ Lbs gone! 🥳
DaisyAndSunshine replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Right back at ya Spinoza. We are still walking right by each other's side 😂 I hope we get to lose some more before we stabilize at a comfortable weight. I do want to lose may be another 30, so I can be comfortable after gaining the usual 20 lbs most do in their second or third year. Don't know if it'll be possible, but let's see how it goes few more months down the lane. -
Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
LuckyCat replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey, y'all! I'm down about 75 lbs from my highest weight (around Thanksgiving), and down about 60 lbs from my surgery weight on December 2nd. That puts me at the halfway point toward my realistic goal (i.e., not the "medically ideal" weight of 115, which I haven't seen since, like, 5th grade, lol). The weight is coming off a little slower than I'd prefer, but the non-scale victories are undeniable. My A1C dropped from 8.8 to 6.4, and I expect it to continue improving. I flew to NYC in May and was reasonably comfortable in a coach seat — no seat belt extender necessary! Plus, I walked all over the city for days, and found myself energized, not exhausted. I think best of all, I'm actually enjoying exercise for the first time in my life. It feels like a pleasure, not a punishment. I'm doing everything from the step machine to (tragically slow) jogging, yoga to Beat Saber on the Oculus. Just last October, I was too out of shape to take my kids trick-or-treating, and had to sit down on the curb to keep from hyperventilating. So, the change is dramatic! I do have more hunger than I would have anticipated. I can easily eat 2,000 kcal a day if I don't police it. I can eat only small quantities at a time, of course, but find myself ravenously hungry an hour later. I try to focus on protein and healthy fats, which helps. Also, food in general feels less like an emotional coping mechanism than just fuel to keep me going; it's less thrilling than it used to be, which is refreshing. For me at least, bypass is a good tool, but still involves willpower and intent — which I can live with. So glad to hear from y'all, and to know you're here. -
How do they check you stomach before surgery
SkinnyMingo1408 replied to Trixxx's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would've had to get an endoscopy but I had one in their network less then a year before. I had bloodwork, EKG, and a chest x-ray. I already had a Psychologist that I saw regularly that was ready and willing to write me a letter and my doctor accepted that and my Cardiologist had to sign off. That one had me sweating because he was a skinny little man that was always after me about losing weight but was NOT supportive about WLS. He actually told me to just stop eating. He did write the letter but he took his time. 😕 I have a new, more supportive Cardiologist now. -
Since the day I talked about wanting to have a surgery, my husband said NO. I tried to give him as much information as I possibly could, I told him I was scared of the surgery but I was also scared because I could feel the weight increasing. We watched videos together and each time he was more against it. Then I told him I was going to do it anyway, I asked him that if he was not supportive at least not to remind me all that could go wrong. So I did it. I cannot say I was not surprised when he was making my teas and chicken broth and getting me protein shakes, even taking walks with me, he was following all the instructions even better than I did. My guess is that he was still worried and wanted to be sure I was ok after surgery, we have adjusted, now the surgery is not the only thing in our minds, he loves that he can hug me like when I was the girlfriend 25 years ago, but he does not want to go to walks with me anymore, he says is too hot outside. So maybe, give him time...

Unsupportive Husband
Queen ApisM replied to Amhuston82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry you are not getting the support you deserve at home. As someone mentioned, some of this could be coming from a place of fear - surgery is a big deal. I also think that people who haven't dealt with weight issues do not understand how truly complex physically and emotionally, and how our bodies are legitimately hardwired to make sustained weight loss difficult if not impossible for most. Has your husband met with or attended any information sessions with the surgeon? If he hasn't, perhaps you can get him to do that? I found that many of the information sessions touch on the science behind why this is the best way to get significant, sustained weight loss for many people. Having said that, even if he won't attend such a session (you can probably find virtual ones that you could attend from home) or won't listen to the information, you need to do what's right for you. You are the one living in your body. You are the one who knows your struggles and desires. Don't let other people dictate what you do. Unfortunately, it will be harder without good support, but that's what this board and similar communities can help provide. -
Unsupportive Husband
summerseeker replied to Amhuston82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been a member of this forum for about 18 months and you are now the fourth woman that I have come across on here having this problem with family. If you want this surgery then you will have a fight on your hands. Its going to get dirty. For their own reasons they don't want you to change. Personally I agree with you, you will continually gain and loose the same weight over and over again, I did. Its heart breaking. The people on this forum will help in any way they can. If you can get to do this, you wont regret it. -
Had surgery 6/28/22 245 day of surgery today 215 . Super happy of the weight I been loosing the hardest part for me to get over was the cravings . I’m doing much better now . Advice Needed: BPD/DS or SADI?
NovaLuna replied to jenniferann's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose the Loop DS (virgin surgery not revision) for myself because of what the surgeons themselves were saying about common issues with the original DS (diarrhea). That was the only reason I choose the Loop DS lol. I met my goal weight (even if I'm currently up 6 pounds due to meds I'm taking, but I WAS up 18 pounds and dropped 12 so... I guess I can deal with 6 pounds. I'll lose it eventually. Or try to.). If I had to do it all over again... I would probably do the traditional DS. Simply because you lose a tad bit more weight with the traditional (according to my surgeon. It's supposedly only a tiny bit, but still) and I wonder if I'd picked it if I would have been able to get closer to a 'normal' BMI. I'm still technically 'overweight' but I figure if I ever do skin removal I'll probably lose a good 10-20 pounds of loose skin and even if I'd STILL be 'overweight' at least I'd be in spitting distance of a 'normal' BMI (I have no idea why I'm putting it in quotations...😓 I can't stop myself 😅). Anyway, you go with your gut instincts. The surgery is for you and you're the one who has to live with it so trust in whatever you decide to do. -
You still have to diet and excercise with WLS. The surgery is there to keep you on track. I call mine my co-pilot, or the adult voice that says "no, you absolutely don't need that" and it works. People who sprout the "easy way out" nonsense simply don't understand what WLS is or does. It is still hard. Every bit as hard as a "normal diet", because it IS a "normal diet", in fact an even stricter one. You can try to explain it to him. Ultimately though, you'll have to be your own support here. Once the weight starts coming off and you emerge from obesity a happier and more repaired person, they will all see that it was in fact the right thing for you.
