  1. My sister and I will both be having revision surgery to a RNY after a failed attempt with a procedure called the Waldrep Wrap. Going through the nutrition appointments now and have labs done. Then it will just be waiting for insurance approval.

@CurvyCakes you will be a day after me on this revision. I am glad that your doctor gave you some idea of what to expect weight loss wise and that eases my mind a bit. I have at MAX 20lbs to lose before I start looking sickly. Keep in touch on how you are feeling with your journey!

    Excited and nervous

That is so exciting! I can imagine and understand that you are nervous and unsure.. but honestly having your current loose skin removed will help SO much in your day to day life. I would say it's totally worth it to go ahead and do this now and once at goal to do the revision later! Not having the painful loose skin will make it easier for you to exercise and get around which will help you get to goal.. so I say go for it! No matter what you decide or what happens, I know you can do this and it is so awesome how far you have come in your journey so far! Congrats girlie
  4. So as some of you know I am 5'10 and I started at 540 pounds October of 2015. I had surgery May 29, 2016 at 480 pounds and today (March 23, 2017) I am 303.6 pounds. I am mostly happy with my progress but am plagued with lots of extra skin. Even though I am not a year out from my surgery I met with a plastic surgeon for my stomach hang. It bothers me a lot and is pretty painful. The surgeon gave me 2 options. 1. I could wait until goal or 2. I could get have surgery to remove the hang now and have a revision later. I chose to try and have insurance cover it now and get a revision later because it bothers me so much. They submitted it to insurance and I got the call that they approved it!! My surgery date is June 5th! I'm very excited but also a bit nervous. The surgeon said mine would be the largest he has ever done and I would need at least 4 drains in for about 4 weeks. I'm also nervous that by June I might be closer to goal and it might be silly to get it now when I would have to get it again so soon. It's really hard to tell my rate of weight loss though once I get closer to goal. Overall I am excited and just wanted to share my good news with everyone!

    VSG or RNY?

Really comes down to what you're looking to get out of your WLS. There are pros/cons with each one. If you have no other health issues that would help dictate which surgery would be better then go with what you want. You really have to think long term of what's better. RNY pros can be that it leads toaster weight loss, greater weight loss over time, helps prevent one from overindulging in sweets due to possible dumping, is the "gold standard" like you said, better for those with acid reflux, could be reversed/revised in worst case scenarios. The cons are more reliance on vitamins every day, malabsorption, the bad side of dealing with dumping if you get it, to me it seemed more limitations on what you could eat Sleeve pros are less alteration to the digestive tract, less likely to get dumping syndrome, mainly focuses on portion control (my main issue), more likely to have a normal diet after surgery, less reliance on vitamins. Main cons for me was that once that portion of your stomach is gone it's gone, may not lose as much weight overall compared to RNY or have a slower pace. In the end I choose sleeve because I didn't want to deal with extra vitamins, I didn't have issues with sweets, and I wanted a slightly slower/steadier pace of weight loss. In my mind the sleeve was less invasive, meaning there was less alteration to my digestive tract. If you do some searching you'll find a hundred threads on this topic as it's a frequent one.

    Waiting

Figured I would join the waiting group I started this part of my journey back in January. I am doing a revision from band to sleeve. I was banded 2.5 years ago, and never found that green zone. I did lose 80 pounds, but that was mainly due to being to tight and not being able to eat. My doctor wanted more tests then the insurance even required, so I have done the psych eval, sleep test, edg, echocardiogram, stress test, 2 nut classes, and blood work. My insurance already sent me my approval letter, so no more nut classes, thought for sure they would make me do 6, so now I just need to wait for the results on the echo, and stress test, then I should be good to schedule surgery. I had to have all my fluid removed for the EDG, so now I am gaining pretty steadily, some weight from bad choices but mainly just because I can now eat without throwing up or choking. Hoping everyone gets approval and scheduled soon:)

i had my revision in November 2016. 2 weeks after surgery I got pneumonia in my right lung.,Even with that I had to help take care of my Mom who was having back issues. Not lifting though.I have lost 41 lbs and still losing.Dr said it would be slower but a loss is a loss.At my heaviest I weighted 290.I have lost 91 lbs in total.I trying to find more time to exercise regularly.I sure I would of lost more if I had. Hope this encourages you newbies on here.Ask any questions and I will try to answer them as best I can.I live near St.Louis,MO ,in a suburb of St.Charles county.Across the Missouri river from St.Louis county. I have the best Dr,hospital and support ever with their staff.I also have had a lot of support with friends and family. They had classes, A very informative booklet that tells you the phases of diet. What to eat how mush. Also what vitamins and the strength on vitamins and minerals.i also have recipes they gave us when I had my sleeve done.A lot of helpful hints and how to add flavor to things so they taste better. I also had to have a Hiatal Hernia repair again with the revision. It was rougher recovery for the first few days.I did learn that you have to remind yourself about chewing real good and eating real slow.I would have immediate feeling of food getting stuck where my Hernia repair was. Best decision I ever made and wished I would of had the bypass first. Eat your protein and drink your water, if you don't do that after revision you really don't feel good.I drink the Premeir Protein because it tastes good and has 30 grams of protein.Made it easier to get my protein after surgery.

Hi there! I'm being revised from sleeve to RNY 4/11 due to severe GERD. From what my surgeon explained revision to RNY lose about 50% of their excess weight on average. That number could be more or less based on the individual. We are expected to lose at a slower rate than with our original surgery. There are some revision folks that loss quicker than their initial surgery but again we are all different. Pre-op and post-op diets also vary surgeon to surgeon. I have to do a 1 week liquid diet prior to my revision yet another person I follow on a different site only have to do liquids for 2 days prior to surgery. Wishing everyone much success on their upcoming WLS journey be it your initial surgery or a revision.
  11. Furthermore, I think the surgeons might want to fix the primary reason for the malabsorption first before considering a revision.

Yes start a group! I am being revised from sleeve to bypass on 4/20. Revision is due to vomiting, gerd, and esophageal dismotility
  13. There are several ways to approach a problem like this, and generally surgery should be a last resort - the more you cut the more you get backed into a corner and remove future options - but such revisions are possible. Have you consulted with your surgeon, or another bariatric surgeon? The RNY has been around for a long time (the basic procedure has been around for some 130 years!) and is the most widely performed weight loss procedure, so there is considerable experience in the field with the various complications that can arise, so your problems are not going to be unique. An RD (registered dietician) would also be appropriate to consult. Many on these forums poo-poo nutritionists/dieticians because they usually aren't falling all over themselves to recommend the latest fad diet someone saw on YouTube, but problems like these are right up their alley. A bariatric or hospital RD can be a good choice - many are bored stiff dispensing post-op diet plans to discharging patients who really don't care and want to get out of there, but they really thrive on someone bringing a real problem to them. They are worth a try. On the surgical revision front, since most revisions are done because of poor weight loss performance or regain, and the sleeve and RNY have similar performance, there usually isn't much to gain by revising an RNY to a sleeve from that perspective, and most surgeons aren't going to have a lot of experience in doing so. There is a small group of surgeons around the country who do perform RNY to DS revisions which does involve revising the RNY pouch to a sleeved stomach in addition to all of the fiddly work in altering the intestinal configuration (which you don't particularly need.) Two docs that I can think of in your region that do such revisions and would be worth consulting if you get that far are David Greenbaum in north Jersey and Mitchell Roslin in NYC. Both should also be well up on the nutritional problems that people can have with these different procedures as they tend to work with the more difficult case. Good luck in getting this worked out, whichever way you go.
  14. I'm in similar place as you trying to figure out what to do. You actually had RYGB revised to sleeve? I wasn't sure that it even was possible there's so much conflicting information online. How are you feeling now just about a year later? My health is declining rapidly due to malabsorption turning into malnutrition creating so many health issues and hitting scary lifetime low weight 103lbs having trouble even maintaining that weight. My overall appearance is of someone slowly starving to death. Pancreas issues, hair falling out, teeth decaying, slow healing from even minor scratch, poor skin condition/quality, abdominal pain, no appetite, fatigue. I just feel/look so unhealthy. I want to speak with new bariatric surgeon, my original surgeon who I loved and trusted left to start a new center in another state, about having a revision to gastric sleeve hoping it will help with absorption problem and that will in turn help resolve other related health problems. Right now I don't feel strong enough to survive any surgery though. Has it helped/worked for you so far? Any complications? Any issues with insurance?
  15. I'm 10 years out Roux en Y with major issues suddenly from malabsorption causing malnutrition experiencing pancreas problem, poor declining general health, trouble healing from even minor scratches, hair falling out, teeth decaying, general feeling of being unhealthy and unexplained weight loss with trouble even maintaining current below normal healthy weight with numerous Vitamin and mineral deficiencies not helped by supplements. I'm wondering if a revision surgery, if it's even possible to do, from current status of Roux en Y to the Gastric Sleeve would improve my health overall. All the required plumbing is there it really seems like just a matter of creating a new pouch and changing the location of where my stomach pouch connects. Rearranging the current way my pouch connect to the gastric sleeve way of connection on my small intestine. I know I'm making this sound so simple when in fact it's probably extremely dangerous and very complicated if it even is at all possible. I just think in theory it should be possible and can happen. Wanted to ask if anyone has had it done and what your experience has been like prior to having a possible pointless discussion with my Bariatric surgeon about it. My current overall decline in health has me reaching for any possible way to help stop what feels like my slide to eventual premature death from the gastric bypass caused health problems. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

I've noticed online that a lot of people the have had the sleeve and have GERD get revisions to bypass. Maybe its more for mechanical reasons, not to lose weight I think you need to get the second opinion and go from there.
  17. Just an update. Spoke via phone to PCP's nurse who said to just said to follow up with Gastro so I already had appt set for 29th with doc who did ERCP back in Dec. Same guy who practically guaranteed me if I had the ERCP I wouldn't ever experience pancreatitis again. Been doing a lot of reading and I'm starting to think that what I've been thinking had been simple slow healing pain from surgical ERCP recovery might actually be Chronic Pancreatitis pain. The constant dull ache that really hasn't gone away only decreased in intensity over time at the large incision site where scope was inserted in my upper left abdomen and occasional sharp stitch in your side kind of pain isn't normal. No one is ordering any pre appt testing even bloodwork. All gastro in my area is part of huge group practice affiliated with local hospital. Don't even know where to go for second opinion. Haven't called bariatric surgeon office don't know if there is even a point. I feel like no one is seeing the big picture of my medical issues as whole and connecting the dots like I'm beginning to do as a simple layman. Very frustrated and extremely scared another attack could just happen out of blue with no obvious apparent reason at any second. Feeling totally helpless. I'm keeping a food log and I have stopped all non perscription meds and all vitamin-mineral supplements till I see doc next week. I'm praying I don't have to go to ER in pain meanwhile. Can't ride out that intense pain at home again I'm simply not strong enough at this point. Will update after seeing Gastro next week. I'm upset and it isn't boosting my confidence in this doc that no pre appointment test have been ordered. I would think basic lab work may show something doc can run with starting next week instead of wasting appointment just to tell me I need XYZ tests to see what's going on then following up after. Seems like a drawn out way to approach the problem of your patient who is experiencing severe pain. I'm also wondering if a revision bariatric surgery, maybe gastric sleeve ( if it's even a possibility ) instead of my maintaining my current Roux en Y status, would be helpful to restore absorption and alleviate malabsorption/malnutrition issues before permanent damage to my other organs occurs if any haven't already occurred. Anyone's thoughts on that possibility would be appreciated?

Anyone revised from sleeve to bypass

My surgeon said patients average about 50% of their excess weight with the revision and most times at a slower pace. The 50% is an average could be less or higher but definitely the best option for severe GERD. I HEAR A LOT of revision patients say they wish they had done it initially. They feel better than ever most have had no more issues with GERD and doing great weight loss wise.
  19. That's awesome. Keep me posted. I swear this is such an emotional roller coaster. One moment I'm excited the next scared out my mind of all the worst possibilities. Never imagined I would need a revision.
  20. It's difficult. I was banded in 09. I've kept off 50 lbs. but it's been a struggle. I have had fill put in and out so many times I can't remember. Ins will want to see compliance and if you gained that say you were not compliant. Many dr mine included are doing the sleeve for $10,000 all inclusive, hospital etc. with 3 yr follow . My ins is covering a revision but I have Years of compliance history even then it was denied at first. So ask your dr about private pay especially for revisions.
  21. I had the gastric sleeve in December 2012. I lost 100 lbs but have since gained back 55 Lbs. I have extreme GERD, have been hospitalized for Ulcers. i went and met with the doctor and he recommended doing the bypass to alleviate my GERD and other issues. i am now waiting on my ins approval. Has anyone else had this procedure done? did it relieve your GERD and how much additional weight did you lose?

RNY or Sleeve! What to do!

I was dead set on having the Sleeve when I started my journey. Due to my weight and BMI, my surgeon recommended RNY. In the end it was up to me and after much investigation, I chose RNY because I did not want to have to worry about GERD and having to have another surgery for revision if it developed. A nurse in my surgeon's practice had RNY 18 years ago and she is healthy and having no issues. I'm 5 months Post-Op and feeling great. My knees, back and hip have so much less pain than prior to surgery. My pre-diabetes has gone away and my blood sugar is in the normal range.

Anyone revised from sleeve to bypass

I was sleeved in 2011.Severe gerd. Had revision to bypass 2016.No regrets.Wish I had the bypass to begin with.My Hiatal Hernia hernia failed too,so they repaired it at the same time.

    Band to bypass surgery date!

So happy for you.You won't have anything to regret.Had revision sleeve to bypass.Doing great.

Getting cold feet all of a sudden

You have to take the same supplements and vitamin with sleeve as you do with bypass.I had sleeve in 2011,then developed acid reflux issues and revision 2016.Some people have problems but not all.Every surgery comes with its own risk.I wish I would of had the bypass to begin with, but I was afraid of complications too.
