I'm very picky. Don't care for seafood at all. I will eat tilapia and sometimes tuna but tuna is very hit and miss. Don't eat vegetables to speak of. I have been trying all sorts of things, even if I didn't care for them before the surgery (I'm also working on the PTSD-type reactions to foods that aren't in my comfort zone with a therapist) and when I find something that works I add it to my repertoire. I'm also experimenting with Protein ball recipes and other odd ways to get unflavored Protein powder in foods - but the texture goes off for most of it, so it's very hit and miss. I'm getting protein thanks to the one flavor/brand of shake I like, cheese, chicken, the two flavors of greek yogurt I can stand, TVP (meat substitutes), Peanut Butter, Beans, ground beef dishes, pulled pork BBQ, Protein Bars, etc. It's not easy. But it's doable.

How do you break the habit?
Djmohr replied to JaneDarcy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Best advice is to remove one thing at a time. Start with things like: 1.) Stop drinking carbonated beverages, even if they are diet. You will need to stay away from carbonation. 2.) Stop drinking caffeine, this also helps with hunger control 3.) Try to remove all processed foods from your diet: chips, crackers, junk.....even things like boxed macaroni and cheese. it will be important to get in the habit of cooking your food from scratch so you know what is in it. There is so much crap in processed foods and the carbs from them actually make you crave these types of foods. Thats why you can take down a box of cheese its in one sitting. It adds NO nutritional value so you need to make them go away if you are eating them. 4.) Remove Pasta, rice, bread, pastries, cereals, all sweets from your diet. These are foods that also spike your glucose levels and create cravings. 5.) Try to change to more whole foods that will keep you fuller longer: chicken, Fish, Beef, Pork, Cottage cheese, greek yogurt, Beans, fresh veggies, some fresh fruits. 6.) change your beverage of choice to Water - you will learn to drink alot of water through this process. For me, this was easy but for others this is difficult. I start drinking water from the moment i get up in the morning and drink at least 48 to 64 oz per day. 7.) Start walking and add a little more eveyday 8.) Try to remove drinking while eating. Wait for at least 30 minutes after you are done eating before drinking water again. This is one of the hardest things to do post surgery but it is really critical because it will flush your foods down and allow you to eat more. 9.) Practice chewing your food like crazy. This will be important and it is harder than most think to do. Still 2 years post surgery i find myself not chewing and I get food stuck. When that happens post surgery, it hurts and it basically ends your meal. 10.) Slow down when you eat. Again sounds easy but it is not. This allows your brain time to know that your full and you wont overeat. 11.) Remove distractions while eating. we mindlessly eat when not paying attention. Again, not an easy one to break but you can do it. Some of these are much easier than others but honestly if you can work on one or two at a time, it will set you up for success post surgery. Best of luck to you! -
How do you break the habit?
MowryRocks replied to JaneDarcy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I started out with a specific plan. I decided to do a 1200 calorie diet. I did a 1200 calorie modified ketogenic diet Monday through Friday and on the weekends I still did 1200 calories, but if I wanted something specific on the weekend, I had it and kept within my calories. I did this for the first three months of my 6 month medically supervised diet before going full keto for the last three months. I ate the same thing everyday for Breakfast and lunch. Breakfast: 2 eggs, any style and a Oikos Triple Zero yogurt (any flavor) For lunch I had a Premier Protein shake and a Sargento Balanced Break. For dinner, I had 2-4oz of meat, with a steamed vegetable. Since the diet was high in protein, it made it easier because I wasn't hungry as often. It really kept me satisfied. If I felt like I needed a snack, I had one. Typically sugar free Jell-O or Sugar free pudding. I also stopped caffeine right away. I figured why prolong the inevitable. Good Luck finding the right thing for you! -
Finally updating 6 days post op because the first few days home from the hospital I was extremely tired and all I basically did was sleep in between sipping liquids and my protein shakes. Surprisingly, I wasn't even nervous going into the surgery. The only thing I was nervous about, was the possibility of my nose piercings closing lol, luckily they didn't The overnight stay in the hospital was alright, the staff were fantastic but the bed killed my back so I was very uncomfortable. The hospital volunteer guild gave flowers and a Thanksgiving card created by school children to patients which was really sweet. Happily I was discharged Thanksgiving afternoon, which was great because I was unsure about if my doctor would come in on a holiday. Also, before leaving my doctor gave me a 25oz purple water bottle and a big totebag with their office information on them. Anyways, I'm feeling pretty good now, I hardly have any pain, yesterday I accidentally leaned my bellybutton incision against the bathroom sink while washing my hands and that stung a little but mostly the incisions are starting to itch and the surgical glue is coming off, I was also able to take my regular daily pills since yesterday, Saturday I gagged them up, I haven't been ridiculously freezing yesterday like I was the couple days before which is fantastic because that sucked. I'm able to drink a lot more, not quite 64oz but getting there. My doctor has my new weeks starting each Friday and I can't wait until this Friday (week 2) so I can start having yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes and oatmeal instead of just 4 ounces of protein shakes 3 times a day, water, diluted juice, and chicken broth. Oh, and even though I've weighed myself, I'm going to wait a few more days to update because I want to be sure all the gas pumped into my abdomen is gone. Patience and following the complete lifestyle change instructions are key to success. HW: 288 SW: 268 CW: ? Sent from my SamsungGalaxy using BariatricPal App

My gastric sleeve has been a total failure!
Gastricsleevefailure replied to Gastricsleevefailure's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you all for your suggestions. I do eat yogurt, soups, eggs, rice and smoothies made with light apple juice and non sweetened fruits. Things that do not require a lot of effort to digestive do stay down but still make me nauseated. My stomach feels like it is in spasms as soon as food hits it. I have given up spicy foods for over a year, tried protein shakes only for weeks and the nausea never let up. I think I will see a another surgeon for a 2nd opinion. Thanks so much. -
Protein supplements are a personal preference and what works for one might not work for the other. The best advice anyone can give you is try different ways to get that protein in. Leverage greek yogurt, cottage cheese and fairlife milk instead of the protein shakes. You may have to eat more often in the beginning because your restriction might hold you up but that is what you have to do. Getting protein is not easy by any means but it is required to keep you healthy. You may have to deal with some yuck factor. I ended up getting used to Premier Protein chocolate. It is the only one i can tolerate and even now, i have one almost every morning to kick start my protein goal for the day. Best of luck to you!

Any other November sleevers out there?

5days out now feeling really good gas comes and goes ,,, liquids mostly ,, yogurt Protein shake praying I'm getting enough in.woundering what and when comes next level Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App -
I couldn't do shakes either. nectar was sorta kinda tolerable. cheese - babybels, string cheese, cottage cheese. Greek yogurt (i like oikos triple zero, 15g protein!) Once you're further out p3 packs. They have nuts which I would think you're too early for. 170-190 cal and has 11-13g protein depending on the pack. Avoid the ones with dried fruit, ups the calories by 100! Good luck - it gets easier! I can't wait to get the that stage. I am one month out tomorrow and have been forcing down 2 shakes a day because other than that all I could tolerate was a little yogurt. I can't add protein to my Soup because I get maybe 3 spoonfuls down. I have just started to tolerate eggs. If I could replace just 1 shake a day with real food I would be thrilled. I must have the world's smallest sleeve. I see what other people eat 3 weeks out and I am shocked. No way could I choke down that much food!

When are pureed foods ok?
rolosmom7 replied to VeeJenise's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I couldn't have puree until 21 days in. But when I moved to full liquids day 11, greek yogurt really helped. I buy cases at BJs since I eat one almost every day. I use it as a dessert almost 2 hours after dinner. -

A friend was Sleeved on nov 12
Dairymary replied to Selvia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So she's just 2 weeks out, right? I was on liquids for a full 3 weeks before ever attempting puréed textured foods. And even then 1/4 cup of yogurt would have been way too much. Even a couple teaspoons made me too full to drink for hours. I ended up drinking protein shakes, water, juice, milk, tea and protein broth most of the day and taking a couple nibbles of yogurt or refried beans late in the day. Your friend's sleeve may just not be ready to advance yet. Getting 100+ ounces of fluids and 60-80g of protein is more important than the type of texture she can tolerate right now. As long as she's meeting fluid and protein goals, she can transition food stages as slow as she needs to. Took me over a year to be able to meet my protein goals with solid food alone. But believe me, I sure appreciate the restriction. -
Hi every body I'm worried for my friend she was sleeved this November and discharged from the hospital like a couple of days later. She was able to drink Clear liquids then full liquids now that her surgeon tells her it's ok to eat yogurt like textured food she is not able to drink Water even four hours after eating 1/4 of a yogurt. Has any one faced such thing? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am in a similar place to you. My surgery will most likely be after the first of the year. I am using a 1200 calorie guide from my surgeon. 60 grams or more of that is lean protien. Lots of non starchy veggies. I do have an occaisional glass of wine or a SMALL piece of dark chocolate as a snack but I budget those calories in. I like smoothies made with greek yogurt, frozen unsweetened fruit, sometimes kale, almond milk, honey if needed, depends on the fruit. For me this works better for lunch than Breakfast. Good luck Sent from my SM-T377P using the BariatricPal App

Couple other suggestions-- fairlife milk (ultra filtered so fewer carbs and more Protein, Lucerne also makes a version called protein plus) and Greek no sugar added yogurt. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I need a "concrete" diet plan to follow please! I'm in 2nd NUT class, so a few months to go, but I need help to start losing now.
Bufflehead replied to Robyn1953's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if this will be concrete enough for you, but here is the plan I had for my pre-op program (not the official pre-surgery diet but for before that, on my nutritional program). I still use a modified version of it when I need to drop into weight loss mode again. Unlimited: lean, unprocessed protein (fish, white meat chicken & turkey, lean cuts of beef, etc.); green veggies (asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts, leafy greens, cauliflower, artichokes, green beans), black coffee, tea, water; herbs and spices, healthy fats (olive oil, grass-fed butter etc. but in moderate quantities -- "unlimited" doesn't mean to go eat a stick of butter!).. One serving of each daily: whole grains, fresh fruit, nonfat dairy. 1 time per week (each): sweet potato, nuts (small serving only), beans/legumes; eggs Banned: everything else, including starchy veggies, sweets, artificial sweeteners, highly processed food such as jello or pudding or chips. Weigh/measure all portions and log everything in MyFitnessPal. Stay under 1500 calories per day. Carbs, protein, etc. will take care of themselves on this eating plan. Sample menu: Breakfast: steel-cut oatmeal w/ cinnamon Morning snack: 1 c. nonfat yogurt Lunch: Chicken breast & asparagus salad w/ olive oil & vinaigrette Afternoon snack: apple Dinner: Grilled salmon, baked avocado slices, pan-wilted garlic spinach After dinner snack: 1 oz. hickory almonds Good luck! -
Different instructions from different surgeons
theantichick replied to kate3811's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was modified liquid (liquid plus Jello, pudding, smooth greek yogurt) for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of adding in puree/mushies slowly, and then if that went well, adding in solid food very carefully, with the goal of full diet in 6 weeks. Each food to add was to be done by itself, in small amounts, and chewed VERY well to see how it went/stayed down. -
Different instructions from different surgeons
Rachel412 replied to kate3811's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine is way stricter than yours. Clear liquids and protein drinks only for the first 4 weeks, though I can add light or fat-free yogurt and sugar free pudding at 2 weeks post-op. Week 5 I can start purees, then week 8 I start soft foods. -
Hi! I'm 2 months post op of rny and down 57.4lbs! I am cleared to eat regular food except for carbs, that's at 6 months. I'm running out of ideas on what to have for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Right now it's usually a Protein shake for breakfast,or greek yogurt and a snack string cheese, I made chili for lunches or dinners it's usually a piece of meat and maybe a vegetable. I'm getting sick of having the same foods and I'm not making my protein intake everyday. I'm bringing in 300-500 calories a day and below 75 grams protein. I'm looking for ideas on what your daily menu is like. I would really appreciate it. Thank you I n advance! Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

My gastric sleeve has been a total failure!
Bufflehead replied to Gastricsleevefailure's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I would get a second opinion from a different bariatric surgeon if you haven't already. Is there a possibility that revision to bypass would help your issues? As far as eating goes, can you tolerate foods that are healthier, such as yogurt or cottage cheese? -
6 days post op and screwed up bad...
Quaintrelle replied to MTWilliams's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You posted for support and insight, I'm sure. Here's mine....take care of yourself, put yourself first, baby yourself, take the needed time to heal, and be kind to yourself. I am six weeks post op and I am still eating mostly puréed soups with added protein, yogurt, cottage cheese, applesauce, jello, and two Premier shakes a day. My challenge is in drinking enough liquid, not protein intake. Keep a journal of what you eat, your excercise, and how you are feeling. That has helped me. I wish for you the best. -
Differences in Diet plans?
Ssze1109 replied to Boudala's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Boudala- I am self pay too so I understand what you are talking about. We missed out on nutritionist , counseling, and the many classes and information. My insurance wouldn't cover any bariatric surgery. I think they are actually doing their clients a disservice by not covering it. I can't tolerate the Vitamins either. I am only able to get 1 in a day. They make me feel like I am going to puke! Try drinking more fluids and see if your energy level improves. I went back to work after 10 days and some days I just want to come home and nap. My Dr said you can put the Vitamin in a blender with yogurt or Protein powder, strawberries, blueberries bananas and spinach. Maybe try that? Sometimes I have to eat a sf Popsicle right after the vitamin to kill the taste etc.. Hope you get your energy back. Maybe you are trying to do too much or your Vitamin D or B12 is low? Differences in Diet plans?
Boudala replied to Boudala's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gotcha.... so initially the first 48 hours was clear liquid Proteins only, then for the first two weeks was liquids. Then soft foods... but in my docs soft foods... it includes fish and meat and eggs cooked properly. cheese... yogurt. From week 4-8 is semi soft foods but it's actually pretty much the same diet as the soft foods. I was told I pretty much couldn't do anything other than walking but then I feel that because I am self pay I got very little guidance on that part and they don't really care to elaborate nor respond after they've been paid. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I only had to pack lunch, I eat breakfast and dinner at home. My usual was either Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with a little nut butter or PB2, or a couple of slices of deli meat (roast turkey, roast beef etc.) and maybe a slice of cheese in a roll-up. I kept it very simple. I would also take a couple of protein shakes as snacks, to make sure I hit my protein goals for the day -- Premier Protein was my usual brand.

My Dr allowed me to put spinach in a blender with Greek yogurt, strawberries and bananas within 2 weeks of surgery. It's blended well so no problems. It has good nutrients that I think we need. But I would call your Dr office to confirm Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
