    October 2018 Sleevers

First, congratulations on all your success at this milestone! 134 lbs lost is CA-RAY-ZY. I think you are right, your body is likely acclimating to the new influx of calories, it's probably all "oooohh, calories, haven't had these in a while, lets hang on to them, cuz I don't know how long this is gonna last..." The last 10-15 lbs they say takes the longest to come off, staying on weight loss calories for your height will get you there eventually. Good luck with your appt with your doc/NUT

    October 2018 Sleevers

Hi @Knglover, Welcome to the site! You may want to also check out the thread below, it's for October 2019 sleevers...you'll find more folks at a similar stage as yourself. This one has a bunch of people further along in the process as we were all sleeved in 2018...still a good source of info though

    October 2018 Sleevers

Hmm. Well, that's disappointing. Today is my 1 year anniversary, and this month is the first month I've gained weight (1 lb) and inches (2.75 overall). I understand how it happened - about 6 weeks ago I was finally able to eat more real food, so my body isn't used to getting more than 600 calories. Will talk to my doc/NUT on Friday at my appt. Hopefully, my body will eventually progress to tolerating raw veggies - that would really help with being able to eat lower calories. But, the good - I'm down 134 from my high weight, 112 from surgery weight. Lost 89% EWL. Only 13lbs over a healthy BMI. My doc tells patients to expect to get to a low point, then gain 10-15# over a few years. I had hoped where I am was the weight after a bit of regain, but I suspect I'm now at my low. I've been bouncing around the same weight for 7 weeks - about the same time I got out of the purgatory of only being able to eat yogurt. Hope everyone else is doing well.

    Dumping

I had my first dumping episode at about 3 months post op. It was from a couple bites of some dessert. In about 5-10 mins after eating it, I got the shakes, my heart started racing and I stared to sweat. Then 5 or so mins after that I got the runs. Then I barfed. Then more runs. I felt like total crap for about an hour then fell asleep. So yeah, it sucks.
  6. Did anyone have a significantly elevated heart rate post-op? If so, when did it normalize, did they ever find out why? I had my revision surgery on Thursday, October 24, 2019. It ended up being more complicated than anticipated, my band was slipped (I told them!!) all the way around my esophagus with the top of my stomach incarcerated in the band and a significant amount of scar tissue. My revision was anticipated to take 2 hours and ended up taking over 4 hours. As soon as I went under anesthesia (before even cutting) my resting heart rate went into the 130s and stayed elevated. During my stay they had me on metoprolol to bring it down, which it did, but still in the high range. Since I have been home, my resting heart rate is about 110 and walking the stairs, scooping protein powder into a shaker, walking to the bathroom, has it shooting as high as 147 with me instantly feeling drained of all energy. I have also had low grade fevers around 99.5. My surgeon's office sent me to the ER today and I had an EKG, CT scan, and labwork showing nothing of significance. The ER doc was trying to sell me on some people's resting heart rates normally stay at 110, which I know mine is usually in the 60s. He then said it could be mild dehydration or just left over adrenaline. My blood pressure is normal, so I couldn't be sent home on beta blockers to try and help with the heart rate again. I did have 2 abnormalities on my EKG pre-op that no one seemed concerned about. I know time will tell, I just know when my heart rate goes into the 130/140s I feel tired beyond just normal surgery tired. I'm trying to get even more water down to see if that helps. I'm just hoping someone else might have some experience with this. Thank you so much for any advice or experiences you give!

5 days post op hunger pains or what?

Sleeved on 10/21 and I'm experiencing the exact same thing! I'm drinking protein shakes to get my 60-80 grams of required protein in but I think I need to drink more water too.

    Questions?

Hello. I am so overwhelmed. I had surgery 10/22. I have a few questions. What are you looking for when looking at the food labels on food? How many calories should you have with each meal?
  9. Teach your kids to eat healthy - My 19 yr old has dropped 75 pounds in 6 months. Happens once you get those first boobies in your life. He was on of the major reasons i did the surgery! There is not a chance in hell i would let me kids do this surgery. Now since he went Cross Train Nuts and healthy my younger is following: and Mom is under control with her carb cooking and Serving sizes managed. Since they live with me full time they get a healthy meal every day, For example went fishing yesterday I have a good amount of a good food to feed them. You cant find a box or bag of any processed food in my house, and to me that was the problem. I just wish i would have done this 5 years back but better we 3 are on the right track. My two are dang mini adults and there is no way they could make this decision let alone younger ones.
  10. Reading an article about a study that Duke University did on teens that have RNY. Basically just determining whether it would be beneficial to do it at such a young age or not. Apparently children younger than TWELVE YEARS OLD have had this done. No comorbidities were required necessarily. They indicated the surgery didn't affect growth. I personally feel like unless the teenager is diabetic or has another serious condition related to obesity, they shouldn't be allowed to have the surgery because they probably can't understand the lifelong impact and requirements that the diet needs. I am not sure. It makes me feel unsettled that they would perform this surgery on a 12 year old. And if you're very young, have you really personally had the opportunity to take it upon yourself to make your own lifestyle changes before having this permanently-altering procedure? You're still likely eating what your parents buy you and don't have the independence or self-awareness to make your own lifestyle choices. I know if I had met the criteria for RNY has a teenager I would have jumped on it, and likely sabotaged myself horribly because I was not remotely mature enough or mentally prepared to make these kinds of changes in my life. I don't knowwww. I don't argue the point that it is "safe and effective" but is a child (especially prepubescent??!!) truly psychologically ready to make that decision/commitment? Shouldn't they have the opportunity to live independently for a while and see if they can make changes on their own to lose weight without being underneath their caregivers? What are your thoughts on pre-teens and teenagers having RNY? https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2019-10-28/kids-severely-obese-weight-loss-surgery-pediatricians

Post op ladies who wear nail polish

Hey, FluffySaysForkIt! Thanks so much for your post, and the tips for doing dip nails! I think I feel confident now to try it myself!! I'll be more gentle on my nails than they would be at a salon, and for sure save money! Does the polish stay for 10 days, too? Or do you have to repolish frequently? I always thought the colored powder was what you wanted for the color. I never thoughr about doing clear and then painting them. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Post op ladies who wear nail polish

Hi! I just do it myself. It is pretty easy and, once you get the hang of it, it goes quick. Usually lasts about 10 days to two weeks for me before outgrowth at the cuticle shows and I redo them. The kit I have is kinda pricey, though I have been using it for almost two years and I am in no danger of running out anytime soon. For myself, it has paid for itself many times over verses going to a salon. I linked it below just so you can see the components. What you really only need to start out (with any system) is: 1. A bonder. This just paints on your natural nail to remove any excess oil or moisture. 2. A base. This is what you paint thin on your nail, just as if you were applying color polish, before you dip it into the powder. (This step is usually done at least twice. Paint, dip, paint, dip... doing the whole hand one dip and then starting over with the first finger you dipped again for the second dip to give it some dry time in between.) 3. Dip powder mentioned above. There are a million shades of dip powder but, to start out with, all you really need is a clear or natural nail pinkish color. I tend to use clear almost exclusively because I like to paint my nails with polish on top of it anyway. 4. A sealer, or a top coat. (Applied after buffing/ filing and smoothing the nail, before color polish- if you are using it.) You will also want nail files and those sponge blocks with different grits to smooth out the nails after your 2nd powder dip before you top coat it. A good quality nail polish remover will help with removal when you are ready. I would pick up the stuff at some place like Sally's Beauty, just to try it and see if you like it, so you don't have to invest as much. That is probably all as clear as mud... LOL! I hope I made some sense. Starter kit Kiara Sky My nails, about 10 days after doing them. So not looking as good as they did fresh by any means, but not broken off either. I don't baby my nails at all in between, so they get some abuse. Sorry for the crappy pic! I would have done a fresh set before taking the pic, but am fighting a cold and just feeling lazy... Edit: After seeing the pic, I thought I better clarify that is silver glitter on my nails- not chipping or anything. Might be hard to tell!

    The Maintenance Thread

Naturally, as soon as I questioned the instruction from my most recent appointment (and complained that the current calories were too low for me to avoid losing) I stopped losing. Nothing for almost 2 weeks now. So annoying! Now that I've set my mind on losing another 10-15 pounds, I'm hoping it's just another stall and not my new set point.

    I don't want to/forget to eat

I did a 10 program - if you look at my post i did a layout - I hired a Nutritionist and i also us a app for calories, Bottom line is I don't eat very much, Just don't feel like eating. I will say that i lost 10 pounds during the fast but after bumped back 3. I think it was water weight. My average is 200 calories a day and most days I just do shakes or veggies smoothies. I beat the hell out of myself for 52 years so really focusing on the Vitamins and health end of it with conjunction of the weight loose. I slip a lot with the vodka but the food thing is easy to me. I think they yanked all the hunger nerves out of me when they took my 85% of my stomach. I also Hate water so this is a major problem for me, I drink the protein waters and i convert water to some sort of flavor drops. I.m a big dude and and I am lucky if i get in 30 oz of water a day, I know that is bad but it makes me feel like hell and blots me. My main liquid is the real low calorie sports drinks or baby drinks I will say once you get the nutrition end under control you will never feel better. Something weird happened i went in to get a eye exam, Been 3 years. My eyes have improved? Not sure if the nutrition had anything to do with it but they really improved. So to wrap up the question: I think the 10 day flush is priceless and i do think it moves your body to healthy and starts the body burning again, but i am not a doctor just saying it was worth it to me
  16. One thing I was NOT prepared for when I had my LapBand and lost all my weight was how others reacted to my changes. I was so focused on me and getting healthy that I did not see the others around me seething with toxic thoughts and words. Took me completely by surprise how you know people for years then all of a sudden their true character showed up.

This time around I am prepared but I am totally documenting this journey from the very beginning in my blog! It's been therapeutic to write it all out.

  18. Hi ! I agree with EVERYTHING above Also I will also be running a November 2019 challenge that will focus on diet/lifestyle clean up. This REALLY jumpstarts weightloss for most as you pay more attention to the thubgs you let return that add extra cals. Watch for that to be posted soon! You can do this!
  19. Hi all, Tomorrow I’ll be two weeks post op VSG and here are my results so far Height: 5’6” 7/3/19 HW. 228 Pre Op 2 wk diet 222 10/15/19 SW. 207 10/28/19 197 So I think I am doing pretty well considering I had a 35ish BMI to start and today my BMI comes up as 31.8. Loss since 1st appointment/HW is 31. Loss since 10/1 pre-op is 25. I also had a band for 5 years and had it removed over a year ago. I hear that could have an impact on loss but I don’t see how being that I had no band restriction for years and never maintained any weigh loss. Anyone else with experience like mine? Did you lose consistently or slower than most. I think I am losing at a rate of what is typical right now. I’m happy but curious about the future. Does it slow a lot more when the purées and then solids start? Thanks for reading.
  20. I was sleeved on April 29 and tomorrow will be 6 months. I am down 100lbs to a weight I have not seen in over 10 years. Its really been quite effortless so far but the last month things have slowed. I still make poor choices and I dont suspect that will ever change but quantity is tiny and I generally think I have retrained my brain as to how much food to eat for meals. Ive achieved these results with basically zero exercise. I am not proud of that and I do think in order to get to the goal weight I am going to have to be more active. For now the goal is 225 but I do expect I will revise that lower.
  21. Hi @Mikeyy First you're going to do great!! I had RNY on 10/11. Didn't have much surgery pain at all, it was more gas pain and back pain from how they positioned me on the table. Once I was completely awake I was up and walking right away. They wouldn't give me anything at all to drink the first day. Second day they had me doing 1 little medicine cup of water every half hour. I got my first protein shake that second night at dinner time. At first I could only do small sips at a time but that has increased over the last couple weeks. I still can't guzzle but I can drink a decent amount each time I sip. I didn't feel hungry at all. Even the smell of food was making me sick. I was on liquids for 7 days then moved to pureed. I can only do 1/4-1/2 c at at time. More often 1/4 c makes me full. I'm just starting to feel a bit hungry here and there but still only eat 1/4c I found it easier to get all my protein in when I was on liquids only. Adding food keeps creating timing issues I haven't worked out since you can't drink 30min before or after solids. For me it feels like its been a lot longer when I reality its only been two weeks so I'm still on the learning curve. The biggest thing I've found is I still feel so tired. I expected to get more energy back by now. Don't apologize for posting "a lot" if you have questions that's how you get answers. We're all here for the same thing, Good luck on your journey.

Hey msnatasha87, Dr. Cronk is really sweet. My insurance is requiring a 6 month diet and he wants me to lose 10 pounds. I'm 2 weeks into the diet and I've lost 3 pounds so far. I saw my primary a few days after seeing Dr. Cronk. She is new (my previous provider retired) and gave me a "new" diet. It's exactly what I was doing before that obviously wasn't working so I'm just counting calories and avoiding sugar and starches. I don't know what else to do. How long did moving through the nutrition classes and the psych eval take? I figure I can knock those out as I do the 6 month diet.

  25. As noted, they generally want you to be off of any narcotics for a day or so before doing any driving. Doing basic errands and around town driving shouldn't be an issue for most, but a multi-hour trip is probably pushing it. At a week out, you may feel like you have been run over by a truck, or you may feel ready to take on Bathurst - it is hard to predict and one day you may feel great and the next feel like crap. I drove a couple hours up to San Francisco for my first post-op appointment at 10 days, I had planned to drive the first hour (my wife doesn't do mornings) and my wife would do the second hour as we got into town and more traffic, but I felt fine and did the entire trip (she drove back in the afternoon.) I would not have attempted it had I not had a relief driver on hand to take over. Similarly, we headed back home in Los Angeles, a 5-6 hour drive, a couple of days later and split the driving chores; but she could have done the whole trip had I not been feeling up to it. In short, a long driving trip should be planned around, and don't depend upon yourself to be able to do the whole thing on your own. I won't get into the prospect of a possibly unreliable GI tract (will you be constipated, or having diarrhea the whole time then? Either (or both) is quite possible with the changes in diet and gut flora that has happened. Good luck in your surgery!
