    Newbie from NY

Worked out for you - the "first" meeting in December was canceled due to "unforseen circumstances" - so you didn't miss anything! :rolleyes2: I'm already registered for the Jan 10 meeting - but my initial consult with Dr. Geiss is on 12/22/09 - so I will be meeting him beforehand. I can hardly wait!! PS - RE: the liquid diet - I've done it before for 6 months. The first 3 days or so are hell (think detoxing) but after that it's pretty much just routine. I have no doubts youll be able to get through a few weeks, especially while you see the numbers on the scale going down down downnnnn!!

LOL. You're right - I have no idea where Jan 10 came from. It is the first Tues of every month. I hope to see you there!
  3. Hi Guy,s Just got back from nearly 3 weeks of holidays. Hawaii, Los Angeles and Vegas it was fantastic. I ate like a pig and stuffed in as much as i could. When at dinner with friend i quietly went to the restrooms half time and had a purge then went back to the table and continued. No one was the wiser. When we returned home. (So glad to be home.) TOTAL WIEGHT GAINED , No, No , -0.5 of a kilo I couldnt believe the scales. I lost 1/2 a KG . Normally a holiday would be a gain of 5 or 10 kg. I,m a happy old soul. Mark.
  4. I'm laying here at 6 in the morning in totally agony over the pain of 2 surgery's in 2 weeks. I appreciate your last response and I think it's a good idea to ask for the band,I will see my doctor today and ask him for it. Looking at your success I am especially touched. I was 191 pre-op and 181 when I went in for surgery. I fluctuated b/t 181 and 183 during the 2 weeks that I had my band. Before I had the surgery I was looking for people who were under 200 who had the surgery and didn't get but one response and she had just had the surgery and no results. Looking at you, down to 123 now and running your first 5 k, you remind me of where I was going and what this journey was supposed to be about. I am so thankful that I am okay and that this didn't turn out more serious but now I have to say goodbye to this dream that I thought was going to become a reality and that really sucks right now. God has different plans for me and I am completely and totally faithful in His plan but it's just hard to re-adjust. After reading and resarching so much about the lab band, I know that it is a life saver for so many and that it transforms lives but I honestly don't think I could ever put it back in. I am in so much pain and I've put my family through a lot and I don't think I could do that again. Like I said, God's got a plan and I'm listening loud and clear as to what he wants me to do next. I'm actually feeling motivated to the challenge of losing weight without it.. not that it's not challenging with it too. I think we may take the money and invest in a trainer - not just 4 to 6 sessions - but someone who is with me always, pushing me and teaching me. I also think this process has taught me a lot more about nutrition than I knew. I never put heavy emphasis on lean Proteins and low carbs. I always did low fat, or counted points with weight watchers. My body really responded to the high Protein way by losing 10 pounds in a week and a half in my pre-op diet. So I'm trying to look at the upside. Sorry for the long post... you just gave me a painful reminder as to where I wanted to be by this time next year. I am proud of you and I wish you the best of luck with your rocking new body!!!! Take care.

    what hospital cover??

im expecting to be $1500-2000 out of pocket.$7000 seems to be so much, and if thats what im in for id rather just pay for the whole lap band op now instead of waiting another 10 months for my private cover to kick in.Im just wondering why are so many people on here out of pocket $4000++ when they have private health insurance? Why do some people pay about $2000 and others pay $7000 when they have private cover?i will email surgeon and ask for All the item numbers,he just gave me the one for the lap band..cheers guys for all ur advice!!:cool2:
  6. I was told no more than 10 days before surgery, but no less than 3. That is why I am doing it right about 1 week before. And definitely, DC traffic, sheeeeesh, I will have to tell you about my one and only trip there. Hilarious adventure! Yeah you definitely want to do it early in the day because you do have to fast, and you definitely don't want to be all worked up either from gridlock. My job is being a Mommy/Wife, so unfortunately I have full access to eating whenever and whatever. But on the flip side I am chasing my 18 month old, which keeps me hopping. I just want to be so healthy for him, I want to do more with him, I feel guilty about that. He is only going to become more active the older he gets. But other than the blood work and following the pre-op diet rules, that's it until surgery. You just have to fast 8-10 hours before surgery, (or the night before) including no Water. Wonder how much we'll lose on this before surgery! What do you get to eat on your diet? Besides the basic liquids? And don't worry I am sure I will be a grumpy butt as well. Just keep yourself happy when thinking of how much weight will be gone with your band after surgery!!!! YAY! Pre Op Diet: 9/24/09 Current Weight: 238 Goal Weight: 145 Height: 5' 2.75" Surgery: October 8 SO READY FOR A BAND IN MY LIFE!:tongue2:

    what hospital cover??

Hi gmp72, The reason that people are charged different prices has to do with the surgeons fees, nurse fees, anaesthetists fees, physc, and dietitician fees only part of there fees are covered private health do not cover all the fees they only pay part of it, for instance my surgeon charged me $5000 for him to do the surgery and medibank private and medicare only paid a total of $930. The anaesthetist charged $1200 and all I got back was $800 no one pays for the nurse (except you of course). The dietitician first visit $98 out of pocket $60 2nd visit $40 out of pocket. Whereas my husband was charged $4500 surgeon that is what his out of pocket expense was with him no rebate from health fund or medicare (as that is what he charged over and above). Everything else was the same as mine except that when I go to see the surgeon again I don't have to pay for my fills whereas, John has to pay $70 as his surgeon does not bulk bill and a extra $10 for the disposal of the needle, he also has the choice of seeing the other doc who does bulkbill and pay nothing for her to do the fill but she still charges him $10 each time for the disposal of the needle. So always find out what the extra hidden costs are surgeons fee above the normal refund etc. Hope this explains it all Sam

    plateau help needed

I was banded on 6.29.09 and from my heaviest I am down 105 lbs. and down about 80 since surgery. I am more than thrilled with all that has left me and that I have never gained an ounce on this journey and I have been on one difficult journey. Two months after surgery my husband developed a staph infection on his foot that would not heal. Between 9/09 and 4/10 he was hospitalized 7 times with staph, MRSA, sepsis, silent heart attacks that resulted in having agents placed and multiple toe amputations due to the above infections. Of course once each and every specialist gave him a clean bill of health, my spouse of 34 years passed away on the evening of the last day of school, in the middle of a conversation with me. That certainly was not the way I pictured starting my summer break. Fourteen months later I had disc surgery in my neck, eight months after that a hip replacement ( on 2 yr anniversary of husband's death) and eight months later thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. Since my hip replacement last June my weight has basically stayed the same even with a fill. I think I maybe down 5 lbs in the year. I have changed nothing except walking more each day! I want to go for at least 20 lbs more...even with surgery #4 scheduled for 6.21.13! I need ideas, suggestions ...help! I am beyond frustrated now to the point that cake and chips are looking good and they never were on my favorites list!
  9. I think we were sleeved at about the same time. I'm 10 weeks out as of yesterday. Surgery date was 11/25. I am losing about 3 lbs/ week also. I am down about 33-34 lbs since surgery. I was hoping it would go faster, too. But honestly, If I can maintain this rate, I'll be at goal at about 10 months out. I try to remind myself that this is a marathon, not a sprint and as long as the number is going in the right direction, I'm good. We have to try to remember not to compare ourselves with others as we are all different. Just hang in there. We will get there.
  10. they pumped you full of IV fluids when you were in the hospital, and those fluids contain a lot of sodium to boot (which makes some people retain water). I've heard of people gaining 10+ lbs on those. I stayed off the scale for the first week or ten days just so that extra fluid would work its way out of my system so I wouldn't have a heart attack when I stepped on the scale.
  11. Any others scheduled for op on the 26th? How are you finding the shakes? Im finding it ok but would love just something thats not low calorie! But im staying strong. Only 10 days to go! Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Need some encouragment

Hey hun, Number one you sound like you are doing great. Secondly your body an fluctuate up to 7 pounds a day, due to the water in your body so no worries on that. I know for me it helps making smaller goals, but not basing everything on those numbers. I make like 2-4 pounds goals that way 10 doesn't seem so out of reach. The scale is just a number, base your success on how good you feel, how much better your clothes fit, but dont worry so much about all the other stuff. Go on your trip regardless of the number on the scale, u never know if the relaxation can jump start your weight loss, and those 10 pounds melt off. Good luck hun.

    Need some encouragment

I agree! I mean, you have lost 45+ pounds. That is awesome!!! So, don't beat yourself up over it. The one thing that I would think might be holding you up is that you probably need to get something in the mornings - skipping meals just slows down your metabolism. I bet if you keep adding those Protein shakes in each day, you'll see the weight come off because your body won't go into starvation mode. Especially if you're working out. I have read SO many nutritionists articles, etc., and the early morning is the most important time to fuel your body because it jumpstarts your metabolism for the day. You'll hit that 10 lbs soon and then blow past it! Look how far you've already come! I hope to see that someday soon! (in the next few months)

    Zoloft Anyone?

I am on Celexa (and thing I have tried each and every other one). The Prozac was the worse. I wanted to kill something...anything. It was horrible and a mind bending experience. The Celexa is wonderful. As someone said the sky is bluer, everything is clearer, and I make much better decisions for myself. There is absolutely no magic pill to make depression better if you truly have had grief in your life, but it does help you to cope with it much better. For me this was the answer, and it took about 10 years of trying lots of other drugs before it ever came to me. Now, I can't imagine being on anything else.

    First Step Coming Up!

Excited for you, I have had great success with my lapband. I am 19 months post op and very close to my goal weight. Just go into this as a life style change and as the band being a tool to help you reach your goal and you will do great. I look as my band as my safety net, it helps me stay focused and on track. The band is my check and balance, it has helped me to learn true portion contol and the drop in pounds has motivated me to continue to make healthy choices. I encourage you to develop an exercise plan early in your journey it helps the pounds come off faster during periods when the scales don't move and also take your measurements because sometimes the scales do not move at all but you lose inches and drop sizes. Good luck and remember this is a journey and with all journeys there may be obstacles along the way but with a desire and a postive attitude you can be successful.
  16. Yes! Don't give up! Restriction is just around the corner. I had a little restriction after surgery, and a bit more after the first fill. Now I have 7 CCs in a 10 CC band and, for me, it is perfect. It is like the difference between night and day. NOW I feel like I actually have a Lap-Band. Now I don't think I should stop eating. I simply can't eat anymore. After, for example, half a sandwich I'm full. I chew pretty thoroughly and I start to slow down between bites about halfway through my 1/2 sandwich (or whatever). In that waiting time between bites, I can feel whether or not it's okay to take another bite. When it's time to stop I can tell. If I don't stop at that point, I will get a very sharp pain in my chest. If I go past that (which has only happened once or twice), then it gets really gross. Sliming, etc. You can read all about that on this forum. But the big deal for me is that it's not hard to stop eating when it's time. I'm full, I feel good. I'm done. That old drive to overeat no matter what the cost doesn't come into play. It's a different sensation, and for me, right now anyway, it's working great. I've had good restriction for about 5 weeks and I couldn't be happier with it. Good luck to you!
  17. Oh Thank Goodness I'm not alone! I am 12 days post surgery and I am so scared because I find that I haven't had to puree my foods as much as I thought I would have to. I dont have any problem with feeling full or wanting to snack. I am eating good Proteins, veggies/fruits and just chewing chewing chewing. I even had some green Beans and beets that were not pureed but smashed and it all went down well. BUT I am so afraid that I am either not eating the right combination of food or maybe eating too much. I do measure and/or weigh each of them and have not snacked or cheated in any way but I am GAINING weight... At 10 days post op, I had lost a total of 26 pounds but in the last 2 days I have gained almost 5 pounds. I wonder if I am retaining Water, am I eating too much or not the right combination of foods. I also wonder if its because I went 8 days on liquids and then it took a few days for my body to bounce back and catch up.
  18. Hey everyone, 1st of all, the surgery has changed my life! Being 204 lbs at 6’0 tall is life changing! I haven’t been this weight since college in 1992. I have a football players body so broad shoulders big build. Everyone has commented how great I look. I had my surgery on 10/6/19 Heres the problem: For the last 6 weeks I’ve stopped losing weight. I’m stuck at 204. my stomach isn’t happy with pure protein. Right around Thanksgiving, I started noticing that when I ate protein of anytype my stomach would growl and seriously cramp and be upset until I could mix carbs in with the protein -then my stomach would be satisfied. Then I started eating a lot of rice. Sushi 4-5 pieces is satisfying with salmon and yellow tail with rice under it and I’m satisfied. Then I went into my unhealthy eating habits. I eat a lot of candy everyday....realizing I have a disease, I threw out all of the candy today. I threw out all of my trigger foods. I threw out all of the chips I was eating. All of the junk food is gone from my house. Please understand, I have a mental disorder called an eating disorder. My stomach hasn’t stretched. I still throw up eating too much, I have a small pouch, I’m still in the honeymoon phase, and even eating lots of junk each day lots of candy each day 4 months after surgery I haven’t gained any weight but I stopped losing the last 6 weeks since New Year’s Day. Im going back to pure protein light veggies then a little carbs. I will muscle my way roll my sleeves up and start losing the weight. I want to lose 20 lbs and have a BMI of 25 but my wife, co workers, friends, family all say stop losing weight! You look like a cancer victim. At basically 200 lbs and big broad shouldered football looking dude with a shaved head everyone says enough, but I’m worried with my bad habits that I arrested and threw away today, that eventually I will start gaining weight. Ps my Dr. Said that since my body type needs 2500 calories a day to maintain that I would get to my target weight quickly, which I’m close to. I also know when I get my veggies and fruits in, my candy & chip cravings disappear. Any advice? Is it time for therapy? FYI, Kaiser my provider has horrible non existent opportunities for therapy, the wait list is 4-8 months to get in to see one. Maybe a weekly support group would help? Mark -worried
  19. Anyone else experiencing this? I'll lose 10 pounds, stall for 2 weeks. Lose 10 more and stall for 2 weeks. I have noticed though that my bust waist and hips measurements going down and clothes fitting much looser. My dad even calls me "Slim" now...but still far from it. Just curious if this is normal or if anyone else is doing this? Cindy
  20. I have no idea how to avoid appetizers. I am struggling with them too. Here in Torino instead of having dinner out we often just have an "aperitivo" or appetizer. You just pay for a drink (between 7 and 10 euros) and you can eat all what you want from the buffet, or the waiters keep bringing stuff. There are any kinds of appetizers: from small amounts of pasta to pieces of sandwiches, crisps, fries, cheese, salamis, anything you can imagine. No proteins, if you don't count the cheese on the mini pizzas! It was born in Milan then many cities adopted it too. Gosh, it's a nightmare, but it's a very common way to have this type of "dinner" with friends (because it's cheap and doesn't really require dressing up for a restaurant). I haven't learnt how to manage it either. Yesterday I had a glass of wine (I drunk a couple of sips) and a mini pizza. I did feel guilty, thank goodness I was full straight away! I don't have a solution but I share the same kind of problem!

    will have band placed 12/2/04

Good luck Fran. I'll be driving down the Ohio Turnpike on the way to Cleveland Clinic for a procedure for my wife. At 10:00 I'll say a prayer of hope for you, though I know you'll do just fine, and you're gonna love your band. Now that's no small offer. Last time I prayed I burst into flame. LOL.

    Im 52...5 weeks Post Op

I highly recommend Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds DVDs. (no affiliation) I have 11 of her DVDS that are in rotation, along with others (Jillian Michaels, Jari Love) Start doing 5, 10 , 15 mins or so, whatever you can do, and before you know it you'll be doing 3 miles. It took me 6 weeks to get to 3, it's a gradual process. Before I hurt my back back in January I could do 6 miles. I'm 57. No athleticism required for WATP. Love them. Great for really hot or cold days. HTH & Good luck!
