Had my one week checkup today!

Zhanna, yes it is normal to not feel restriction once the swelling from surgery goes down. Remember the mantra - the first 6 weeks are about HEALING, not losing. Any weight lost in the first 6 weeks is a bonus, not an expectation. The true journey begins once you start getting fills. It is true that some people are tight enough with an empty band to lose, but they are the exception, not the rule. Don't think about weight loss until you're ready for your first fill, usually about 6 weeks out at the earliest. Eat healthy as much as you can, practice your chewing, don't drink with meals, don't drink sooner than 30 minutes after a meal. Practice, practice, practice. Then you'll be ready when you get restriction with your fills.

When Your Counting Your Calories And...

I guess it really depends on what kind of data tracking you are wanting to do. My doc told me to eat X amount of calories, and workout a certain amount. The X calories for me isn't necessarily a sliding scale, but it is worth considering especially if your workouts vary, or you only workout certain days of the week. By that I mean, don't necessarily eat less on days you don't workout, but you might consider eating more on heavy workout days otherwise you could be inhibiting your weight loss by having too big of a negative calorie deficit.

    Pre-Op Form/Physical

Here is my experience: There was a form that was filled out by my Dr. and some questions that he asked me about on the form if I recall. I was pretty young, and in otherwise good health so there was not too many other things that I needed. They required blood tests before, I am not sure what they all were but there was several on the form. I remember one being to do with clotting time and blood counts because they had to take mine twice as my Dr. forgot to put one on the form, and Nurse Ratchet that took my blood the first time left a huge bruise and the next one asked me who the hell did that to you. I met with Dr. Coburn the day before. I dont think it was nessecary, but it may me useful for those who have last minute concerns. He also met with me the day of my surgery before they walked me into the OR I did not have a two week with Dr. Coburn as I am in Calgary, but I did have one with my Dr. just to make sure that they insicions looked okay and that everything was normal. Yes, bread this early is a no-no for most. It balls up in the stomach and sits there like a rock. Stick to liquids for 2 weeks, mushies for 2 more weeks and then soft food for 2 more weeks, after that whatever you want but watch the caloric count.

    No Lap Band Fill

went to doctors apt today. 5 weeks out from surgery and lost 20 lb. She didn't give me fill because I have lost 20 lb. Was kinda disappointed that I didn't get a fill, but excited because I get to start regular food now. Anyone else not get a fill and how long before you did get a fill

    Slippery Slope?

I think it's only natural to feel this way. Awareness of yourself is very important. You have done an amazing job in 9 weeks by losing 47 lbs. I think I feel the exact same way because deciding to get the lap band was such a big decision to make that I'm very concerned with success because I felt like this was the last option I had. I too find myself being over cautious about what I consume, and I'm only one week post op, but mostly it's because I want to succeed. Don't become overly worried about this, be aware of yourself, and continue on your journey. Thanks for sharing.

    Slippery Slope?

I have a sister that went from one extreme to another. She was over 400lbs when she started and lost over 200lbs in less then a year. She is over 6ft tall and she got so obsessed with food and weight that once she hit goal weight she still wouldn't eat and began starving herself and this lead her to be put in the hospital and her organs started shutting down. They fed her intravenous for weeks and she had to take a lot of vitamins and drink protein. You need to speak to a nutritionist and find out how many calories you need for your body to function correctly

    Okanagan BC?

Thank you for the reply! I went to emerge and they gave me a x ray and said it looks like my band has slipped so they put me in touch with a gastoenterologist but it's a 6 week wait to just get a scope done to ensure what the problem is. The doctor in the ER told me to just keep eating Protein shakes but it'll be 7 weeks at that point I don't know how someone is supposed to live like that for 7 weeks just to even get looked at. Such a nightmare Sent from my SM-G935W8 using the BariatricPal App
  9. I could eat pretty much anything after going on solids. I don't do a lot of liquid calories though and milk does fall into liquid calories. I drink milk once in a while but not daily. It is a trial and error process, some people can eat anything and others can't. Sometimes you will find you can eat something one week and a few weeks later you can't, but then wait a while and you can eat it again. Everyone is different, so you just need to try it and see what happens. Just make sure to chew very well and take your time.

    UGH......gained weight???

I was just like you. I had actually lost about 15 lbs in the first 2 weeks on the liquid diet. As soon as I started getting food into my system, I slowly gained weight back. Its been 6 weeks since my surgery and I just got my first fill yesterday. I was so excited just so that I would stop being so hungry all the time. My doc let me know that my band was empty and thats why I was so hungry. Well, that makes sense!
  12. I mentioned late last week that it hurt to eat or drink anything so I went to the doctor last Friday, and he unfilled me all the way. I finally went back today to get a fill under fluro to make sure everything was okay. He said some word that started with a 'c' and then prolapse. He told me I had been tight for so long, and I needed to let my stomach rest. I go back in two weeks, and he put 2.8 cc in there today. What is a prolapse, and will my band and everything be okay? The thing is I didn't feel tight, and I was able to eat good until my last fill at the first of Feb. He told me to eat slowly and not to overeat. That is hard because I feel hungry because I don't have much fill. Also, my year of "free" fills was up in Feb., and of course, this had to happen after the one year. It's okay I guess. I just want everything to be okay with my band.

I felt weak and lightheaded until about week 12 post op. Take it easy and listen to your body. Everyone heals at different rates.

Mom, which ones did you try? I tried the Grape and didn't care much for it and I've been a bit concerned about it and now I'm starting to think, after surgery taste buds are going to change and really it's going to be a struggle to get anything down and clear phase is about a week so it's not going to matter too much. I heard there's a green one that's not bad, and I thought I'd try to find that and maybe add a squirt of green MIO or something fruity and add Black Cherry MIO. Unfortunately, I get migraines if I use too many artificial sweeteners, and there are some that cause a bloaty feeling, so I would rather not sweeten things if I don't have to. The only artificial sweetener lately that doesn't have that effect on me is Truvia. Too bad more things weren't made with it for me.
  15. Ok, so I am choosing to start my pre-op diet 1 week early not because i wanna lose lbs but i want to really jump start my liver reduction to limit any surgical problems. As of today i have 2 days left to indulge myself and eat all the goodies that i want cuz come monday it's on! Has anyone else done this or am i the only one?
  16. I am five days post-op. I am feeling good. I walked 2.5 miles this morning, I had gas in my shoulder yesterday and thought I was going to pass out. Finally, my oldest sister, who is two years post op told me to drink a hot soda to relieve the gas. Lord knows I didn't want to but I think it save my life definietely from the pain. I am moving around great but has a lot of gas. Really believe it's from the pre-op diet of broth which can be greasy. My initial weight was 212 pounds; heaviest weight: 222; I lost 12 pounds during the two weeks pre-op diet phase. Day of surgery I weighed in at 200 pounds. Today, I am at 199.0. Not much difference.

    Protein powder?

I think this is at least the 3rd post this week asking this very same question. There are several brands of unflavored protein powders. Try doing a search and you should get a wide variety of answers.
  18. hi,after my last fill 3 weeks ago,i had the same problem (even posted it on here, asking for help myself),was very scary especially when i couldnt even hold down fluids but it did eventually loosen up.By the second day i was able to drink fluids, not in big gulps but in small frequent sips, and if that fails you could try sucking on ice blocks or icypoles,or even a wet face washer if you dont want to get an unfill, like i didnt. i will say though, after 3 weeks i am still having problems eating which really frustrates me,especially when im hungry, and i am having my hair falling out and bruising which i know is not good, but i am being able to keep small amounts down now.unlike when i first got the fill. I have got 6.2 in my band now and have heaps of restriction. Im not saying this is the way to go,but its the way i chose and all the best to you.

    High Expectations

I had a follow-up with my surgeon yesterday, I'm about 4 1/2 months out. I was nervous for the appointment because my weight loss has essentially stopped over the past 6 weeks. I'm going between the same 3 lbs for what seems like ever. He came in and asked how I was doing, and I decided from the get-go to be honest; I told him, not good. He asked why, said that I looked great. I told him that the weight loss had stopped and I've tried EVERYTHING. Eating by the book. Eating more. Lately, eating less. Exercising more. Exercising less. Not exercising at all. I told him that I felt like I was never going to reach my goal at this rate, my back was against the wall and I had no idea what to do. He asked me what my goal was, and I told him 160 lbs. He said that was reasonable. Between my last appointment 5 weeks ago and yesterday, I had only lost 3.8 lbs but overall, from my first consult with him in May I was down 48 lbs (53 since the start of my program). He said that losing over 50 lbs in 5 months was remarkable. My body was most likely in shock-mode from the loss and that I just need to ride it out. Stick to the eating plan, stick to cardio over weight training if I preferred, and be patient. He said at 4 months, I'm at where I should be statistcally at 9 months to a year post-op. I got a 1/2 cc fill, bringing me up to 6 1/2 cc's in my 11 cc band. He was confident that I was at or very, very close to the green zone, and I should see results if I stick to the plan. So I left the office reassured. I feel good about the upcoming months, and know that if I just stick to the plan eventually my body will get the message and I can meet my goal. I know I have high expecations of myself; the last person in the world I like dissapointing is myself. But my thinking that I was going to lose 2-4 lbs a week for the duration until I hit goal was probably silly. So I've adjusted me expectations. If you're feeling really let-down or discouraged, try stopping and asking yourself if your expectations are realistic, or maybe they're too high for what your body can handle.

    4days Banded Gained 8 Lbs

I was banded 12/29. I am only weighing in once a week, on my weekly bandaversary. My husband bought me a Weight Watchers scale a few days before my new life began. I lost 42 lbs on WW and 3 lbs on pre-op liquid diet. I promised myself I would only weigh once a week just as I did the 6 months I went to WW. I don't want to be a slave to the scale.

    AF is 6 days late!

My first one was late after surgery but.... I found out I was pregnant. I am 7 mos post op and 7 mos pregnant. I got pregnant a week after surgery. I had an IUD and still ended up pregnant. I figured I was late because of surgery and the drastic changes my body was facing. Never even thought to take a pregnancy test until morning sickness began. I don't want to scare you, but if this keeps up please take a test to be sure.
