Fills fills fills... SOO important! If we could do this without restriction, we would have. But we are a population that needs the restriction to lose weight. You have to do your part, you MUST get appropriate restriction. When that is good then you need to do the band basics such as eating the right foods and eating them in the right order if that is what you need to keep you satisfied. That means Protein first, then veggies, then carbs. You need to do all the right things to make your tool work better. That includes attitude. You just have to have the right attitude, the attitude that YOU can do this and the band will help you reach your own goals. It isn't going to do it for you. I think another important aspect for you is identifying when you are actually hungry vs. when you want to eat. Those two concepts are not the same. Head hunger vs. stomach hunger. You write that you think about food and then get hungry. Is that really true? Do you think about food and then you FEEL hungry or do you think about food and then want to eat it? I can talk myself into an entire bag of Fritos without much effort, doesn't mean I am hungry. It means I want to eat a bag of Fritos. See the difference? I didn't, not for a long time. I'd see those Fritos calling my name and I still have to stop and think, am I hungry or do I just want to cram food in my face? It's prevented the need for many useless trips to the grocery store to feed a craving vs. actual hunger. Bottom line, get down to basics. Start with the fill, go from there. You can do this. This is hard but it really is the kind of hard WE can do.

Hi Busy...you're not too far from me. I'm in Waldorf. I had a lot to do to be approved for the surgery myself. I had to have six months of a supervised medical weight loss program as well as psych eval and EKG. Believe me...it's worth the weight and the hard work. I love my band. Welcome to the board and good luck with everything. Keep in touch!

"Think You're Too Heavy to Exercise?" -- articles
Inner Surfer Girl replied to WLSResources/ClothingExch's topic in Fitness & Exercise
This is great. There are some very practice ideas and suggestions in this series. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is not currently exercising as well as those of us who are exercising at a higher weight. Thanks for sharing this. -
Well, I need fuel for the workout and raw materials on recovery days. If you are lifting 5 rep max weights, I'd go every day same calorie goal. If you are still losing rapidly, workout day. Sent from my phone. Please forgive brevity and spelling.

I was back in the gym three weeks after surgery doing my full routine. My team just told me to listen to my body and be careful with lifting that involved my core. I was doing 45 minutes to an hour on the recumbent bike and then a full weight circuit on the machines (not much by way of free weights until I was 6 weeks out.) If you do it and your body feels oK, then do it more. Just be careful with any abdominal stretching. If it hurts, stop.

How much of a fill do you want? If your Dr lets you pick how much of a fill you want then I think he was not a good Dr for you to see. If you wanted to take weight off fast then you should have had the bypass. I'm not trying to be mean I just think you should take it slow so your hair doesn't fall out and you don't have other problems.

Hello all! This is my first post here and I am thrilled to have this resource available at my fingertips. I have been reading posts for about two weeks and decided it was my turn to ask for your opinion. My relationship with food has been a lifelong struggle. After a while I gave up hating myself and tried to work on self love, which really just turned into justifying my bad habits. I started this gastric surgery journey at over 300 pounds after seeing a candid photograph of myself. I didn't recognize the person I saw in the photo. I had been ignoring health issues far too long that I knew were related to my habits. I began to make small changes like eliminating soda and fast food. I knew, though, that I needed to make a longer lasting change and the sleeve sounded like a great tool to reset my eating habits and relationship with food. My first appointment with the surgeon was June 8 2017. I weighed in at 294. I had four months worth of nutritionist visits, all of which I fluctuated between 295 and 297. Then I had my psychiatric evaluation on August 23 2017. My weight that visit was 299. The psychiatrist cleared me, but was very insistent that he typically wouldn't clear someone who had gained five pounds since their first visit and that my surgeon wouldn't perform the surgery unless I was down 5-10 pounds. My current weight is 290. My pre-op appointment is November 8 2017 and my surgery is scheduled for November 13, 2017. I am a nervous wreck. I have started going to the gym five days a week and doing half an hour of cardio. I don't restrict what I eat, only how much of it I eat. I know I will lose some weight as a result of the liquid pre-op diet but the psychiatrist's words haunt me. I am convinced after paying such a high deductible and all I've already been through that for some reason my surgery will be postponed. Has anyone else had a similar issue? How was it resolved?

How is 'excess weight' calculated?
NikkiDoc replied to Beachsprite's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Based on my height of 5'3" my weight by one of the gov't or Met Life weight charts says 131 is the top of the ideal range. I was 231 on the morning of surgery so my excess weight was 100 pounds. -
How is 'excess weight' calculated?
Babbs replied to Beachsprite's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I saw Dr Weiner (he has videos on Youtube and he's awesome) do this calculation, although I didn't like it much because I felt it was super unrealistic for me, lol. For a female, it's 100 pounds for every 5 feet. Then add 5 pounds for every inch over 5 feet. So I'm 5'5": 5 feet =100 +5 inches × 5= 25 So my ideal weight supposedly is 125lbs. I started at 235. That would mean I have 110 pounds to lose. 110 pounds × 65% (what they say to expect) would be 71 pounds. Like I said, that's one calculation, but I find the "ideal" weight unrealistic. My goal is 150 pounds. Hope you got all that! -
Hi All, I know most surgeons and literature around bariatrics discuss losing 'X%' of your 'excess weight' however what do they class as excess? I'm assuming they are using the BMI, but what do the class as your 'ideal weight' to then calculate your excess? Is it the highest BMI point you would be classed as in the health range or is it the mid point of the healthy range for your height/gender, the lowest point or something else? It's just i'm trying to set up my weigh loss journal and app and set goals etc but i'm at a loss as to what this mystical calculation is based on Thanks in advance - and yes I would be amused if this like everything else varies between surgeons!

Haha that will be great. I made few goals before surgery and at 3mo I have already passed my 6mo goal . Next goal is down 30 by June vacation weight loss has slowed down some now though so I'm back at gym kickboxing

What if I 'Pre Diet' Myself out of Qualification?
Apples2 replied to Jameskc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just barely 40 BMI with some comorbidities. Every ins. company is different but mine took my beginning BMI and weight. I was required to do the six month diet also. My surgeon encouraged weight loss and my ins. company also encouraged it during that time period. I had not trouble getting approved. Just a couple of days. Jump through the hoops...do what is required of you. The six months actually gives you time to wrap your head around the life change after banding. Do as much research as you can during that time. By the time your surgery date comes, you will have a clear understanding of what you are in for. Good luck and take care. -
Getting my 2nd Band in two weeks
Elie936 replied to 43coco's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a question for you, its really too bad what happenned to you, i hope it never happens to me, especially wuth all the success you had. So you said you gained all that weight in 4 monts, you ate too much. Wad it because you became super hungry again or was it because your metabolism was slower, or was it because you had missed having big portions of food? What happenned to you is my biggest fear, and i know it happens a lot, this is why i am asking. Thank you and good luck!!!!! You will do great -
I hear ya on people getting tired of updates on the weight loss. I gradually stopped texting my core group of supporters daily (not about weight specifically-- anything interesting I've experienced) cause I figured they were growing wary of it. I now only update them once a month with photos. Keep evaluating where you are and how you are responding to experiences on your journey and adjust accordingly. This is what I think evolves in great maintainers.

Hey all! My name is Kim and I'm in the initial stages of this crazy banding journey. I am 34, wife and mother of two young boys. I work full-time as a nurse. Obesity has been a life-long struggle. Like most here, I've dieted and gained it all back plus more. I contemplated gastric banding around 2003, but it was difficult to get insurance approval and I was scared and confident I could do it on my own. So here we are 8 years later and I'm going through with the band. I attended a seminar on September 10th and had my initial consultation October 12th. I am required to complete a six month medically supervised weight loss prior to approval. My physician set weight loss goal of 13 pounds. My second weigh-in is scheduled for November 15th. I also have to attend six support seminars. I've very excited about the journey, with a little hesitation because I know how my past performances have gone. I'm doing the best I can to be a healthier version of me. I look forward to sharing my journey with you and getting to know all of you!

I have to agree with you. I'm about 7 months post op and while the weight is coming off and I feel so much better I think my anxiety was getting worse. As I explain it to some people I had to basically give up every addiction over night and that is stressful! I used food for so many coping mechanisms that it made me a nervous wreck! I'm getting the help I need now, but it was miserable for awhile. So many mental and physical changes to deal with at once. That being said I wouldn't change a thing!

I am no expert and am only 2 days post op, but I have read about something called Bandster Hell, which is what you have just described.....the swelling and all if gone from your surgery and you feel pretty good eating lots of things. Some people put some weight back on during this time. ONce you get your first fill all will be well and the weight will start melting off again. I think you are right where you should be. They said it is hard to stick to it during Bandster Hell because you are able to eat. Just make good choices the best that you can, and get your count down going for your first fill. Good Luck!

Ok I've been "lurking" long enough. I guess it's time to introduce myself since I see so much support on this forum and I believe I've found it to be just what I need. My name is Kelly, I'm a Mama to 2 little boys, married and work full time as a RN. I have completed the required 6 months of nutritional classes and will hopefully finish my required consults next week. I will then wait for approval from my insurance company, which I'm told they are quick to respond. I hope to have a date for surgery within the month! I'm super excited and extremely anxious at the same time. I've struggled with my weight since my first child was born in 2007, but was a little overweight to start with. I have gained about 75 pounds since before getting preggo with my first one. I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and most recently have been having pitting edema in my legs and ankles that even Lasix won't get rid of. I'm sure I'll have tons of questions in the coming weeks, I kind of know what to expect from the nut classes but I know I'll need more info from your experiences too. I will be having my surgery in Tyler, Texas with Dr. Babineau. Any advice is surely welcome! I look forward to becoming more active on this forum and meeting all of you that are in or have been in the same place I am! Thanks in advance for all of your support! Kelly B.

Losing weight sort of scary fast
roziecakes posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I've been trying not to freak out, but I am a little. I'm losing weight scary fast. I had my band in on the 8th, and I've lost 20 pounds. That seems really fast to me. Could it be just Water weight? I'm trying really hard to get enough calories in, I have been tracking them, and writing everything down, and I've been able to get between 900-1000 in each day. I'd like to get 1200, but I feel full after I eat (just started mushies). My plan is to add some more Protein powder into the shakes that I blend up, and maybe have full fat cottage cheese instead of low fat. I think I can get to 1200 that way. If anyone else has some more good suggestions, I would love to hear them! I'm going to peruse the threads for some good mushie recipes. I never thought I'd have to fight to get in enough calories, lol. I assume that the weightloss will slow down soon? The reason I got the band was so that it would be more gradual and in my opinion healthy. This is kind of freaking me out. BUT I do feel really healthy and have tons of energy. Maybe it's just what my body is supposed to do right now. Thanks for all advice ahead of time. -
I started my 2 week Liquid Diet on January 5, 2011 with my Plication Surgery on January 19,2011 with Dr Watkins and I have lost 50 Pounds to date. I started with a BMI of 49 and weight of 383 this morning I weighed 332. I would recommend it to anyone. It is a TOOL and there are ways to CHEAT you can eat more Junk Food than Healthy Food, Once you eat good food your stomach definetly gives you a sign, If you choose to ignore this sign it Hurts and is not worth the Pain which last around 3hrs. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH MY PLICATION and DR Watkins and Staff are GREAT

Can Anyone Give Me Suggestions For Protein Shakes?
this sucks replied to barb rah's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I use Procal but its only available from the weight management clinic where I did all of my pre surgical stuff. I also use Isopure which is a ready to drink product. I have found it at GNC. I like the zero carb version. They have lots of flavors that have 160 calories and 40 g of protein. -
Hello again all. I have been extremely frustrated with my weight loss. I had my surgery on Feb 5 2014 so I am a little over 2 months po. The first month from the time the Dr recorded my weight until he seen me 1 month po I dropped 34 lbs. I was ecstatic. When I went in for my 2 month check I only lost 7 lbs taking me down to 226. That was on April 7. Since then I have dropped 8 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I work out at least 5 days a week doing 45 mins on my elliptical and then lifting 10 lb weights on top of it to get my arms in shape hoping some of the skin will stretch back. I eat healthy getting 60 grams of protein daily and plenty of water though sometimes I may be a few grams short on my protein and a little short on fluids. Why am I not losing more weight then I am? It just doesn't make sense to me. My Dr was upset with my at my last visit for not dropping enough weight. I see so many people hitting the 100lb mark before a year and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I plan to start tomorrow walking 4 miles a day like I was before I got the elliptical a couple weeks ago on top of everything else I'm doing. Can someone please help me or guide me so I can increase my weight loss?

It's your muscles swelling/rataining Fluid because you've stressed them. They inflame as the result of that stress. It's just Water, keep running and move on. It takes months to add actual muscle mass, and it's rare to add muscle mass during a weight loss period. You need a calorie surplus to add muscle mass.
