Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

I just had a revision from band to sleeve 17 days ago. I have lost 26 pounds, which is faster than my weight loss with the band. However, my rapid loss is due to reflux which has plagued me from day one post op. Hiccups are very irritating and getting proper calories/protein is a problem. My Dr. says it just takes time and is complicated by a large hiatal hernia repair.
  2. I have spoken with the PA regarding my hunger pangs and was prescribed Zofran for the nausea. It's definitely not "head hunger" as I can feel my stomach churning when I do not eat enough to satisfy. I'm stumped, honestly. I am depressed and feel like such a failure. They tell me to "reset" and start the post surgery diet again, but I'm hungry to the point of nausea and headaches. Just wondering if any one else has experienced this. I have found some articles that mention a band after sleeve, and was curious if anyone had in fact received this revision.
  3. That is odd that you're able to eat more now that you have a sleeve. Most people get the sleeve after the band for 2 reasons: Because the band was causing complications, or because the band wasn't working as much as they expected. A lot of people get the revision because the sleeve has a higher/quicker weight loss rate than the band. Have you talked to your doctor about this? I was going to ask if maybe what you're feeling is cravings instead of hunger pangs. But I see where you said that you're feeling nauseous by trying not to eat more than you should be, which makes me think that you're actually feeling hunger pangs. If I were you, I'd call my doctor and discuss this with them. My first assumption would be that they didn't remove as much stomach as most doctors do. I actually know of a woman whose doctor only removed 65% of her stomach, (while most doctors removed 85-90%) and she still felt hunger pangs.

    This seems too easy...

Nope, I had very easy recoveries as well. Many posts are usually when they are worried something is wrong and I, like others, read them and get worried. I avoided the gastric bypass for years and now that I had the revision, I feel so silly in retrospect. The majority of WLS are very smooth due to the laparoscopic procedures being so efficient and safe. Congrats to your great recovery and sounds like you are on the right path with great success.

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

My band was removed in April and my sleeve is scheduled for August. I wonder if it's been long enough that I'm considered a revision. I've gained 20 pounds since the band removal so I wonder if my metabolism is normal again.

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

I lost 115 pounds during the first year that I had the band. Unfortunately, I slowly started gaining the weight back and complications eventually forced me to have the band emptied (and I gained all of my weight back). On November 20th I will be having the band to sleeve revision surgery. I would LOVE to have the same weight loss during the first year as I did with the band, but I am thinking it will be slower this time around. I would still be happy with 1 pound a week though because at least that would have me headed in the right direction.

    Lap band revision

I was in the same boat 10 months ago. Band needed to come out. From the time I was unfilled until getting approval I also gained 40 pounds. I understand your frustration! My doctor suggested GB revision, however, I insisted on Sleeve and am so glad I did, however, I will tell you that a higher percentile of sleeved revision patients lose weight slowly. I am one of those patients, but, I'm ok with it. The very awesome two benefits for me is that I don't feel the hunger I felt with the band and as long as I eat slowly, full is full and no second guessing and overeating happens very little for me. Most surgeons will do revisions with 2 surgeries because they tell you it is safer and there is less of a chance of complications like leaks on the staple line when you allow your insides to heal for 2-3 months before getting sleeved. Other surgeons such as my surgeon will proceed with band removal and sleeve procedure in one surgery contingent that there are no major issues, such as erosion or band slippage and also if there is not a lot of scar tissue that has to be removed/repaired. The surgeon sometimes will not know until they are inside. I was told that I could wake out of surgery only to discover that he could not proceed with the sleeve. I was lucky! Deciding on GB or Sleeve, in my opinion, depends on how much weight you need/want to lose and how active your are. GB will get you to your goal quicker than the sleeve. GB is also a bit more complicated with the re-routing of the plumbing (intestines). For me I am extremely pleased with sleeve because of two outcomes resulting from the sleeve. I feel much less hunger compared to the band and I think that this is due to the ghrelin cells that are removed when 80% of the stomach is removed and second I know when I am full beyond any shadow of any doubt! Love it! There is a facebook site called "Band to Sleeve revision" where members are only people that have had band to sleeve revision done or currently have band and are thinking about getting it done. Very informative people there. They really have been a God sent to me. Sorry for going on and on, but, I hope this has been of some help. Jake

    Lap band revision

Hi @@kstein01 I just had band to sleeve revision surgery on March 2nd. I had complications from my band for about 8 months before I made the decision to go with the sleeve. I went in for an EGD and my doctor unfilled me completely and I ended up gaining 25 pounds in 2.5 months. I was so disappointed in myself. My surgeon does the removal and revision together if possible. And luckily he was able to do mine together. I am so happy with this decision and looking forward to not feeling horrible all the time like I was with the band. I know the weight loss can be slower with the sleeve but this is a journey not a sprint for me. Good luck with your decision, remember this has to be what's best for you and your future. 9. I had a sleeve done three years ago and will be going in for a revision to bypass in March. I really want to do more to keep myself on track, and thought about having a dedicated bullet journal just for this - goals, trackers, etc. Of course, I already use apps to track food and macros, water, step count, etc, but they are in different places and, having just started bullet journaling for another part of my life, I’ve realized how much I miss actually writing things down and having more space to write about high points and low points, as well as a place to keep photos, etc of my journey. I’ve done some research online but most bullet journals just have a one page spread for the month tracking exercise or water or whatever, there are very few ideas out there about setting up a journal for those of us going through bariatric surgery (pre- and post-op diets, liquid/purée/soft food stages, etc). Just curious if anyone out there has set up a journal for themselves and are willing to share the kind of spreads they made. I’m currently sketching out a few ideas and will share as soon as I can make them somewhat decent.
  10. I went into my initial consult not really knowing much about either procedure. After the nurse gave her presentation, I knew that I wanted the RNY. I had mild GERD, and was concerned it would get worse with the sleeve. After I joined this board, I read a lot of stories about members having a revision from sleeve to RNY b/c of GERD which reinforced my choice. So far, so good!! I'm very happy with my surgery!
  11. I’m at 6 months. Also similar stats with you. 5’6 highest weight was 242, I was 226 on day of surgery (8.8.17) I don’t count calories and only estimate ounces and protein. Currently 16lbs away from goal. I was a band to sips/loop DS revision so loss has been slower but expected. I plan on starting back at the gym... hopefully soon. I’m pretty sure I get over 1000 calories a day though. I don’t have any issues with foods I cannot eat or tolerate.

    What am I doing wrong?

This a 1000 times. It's so important to adjust expectations otherwise you're going to feel like a failure. This is even more important when you're starting at a comparatively low BMI. Someone with a BMI of 55 or 60 will lose weight faster than someone with a BMI of 40 or 35 or less. You'll also lose weight slower if you have lost quite a bit of weight pre-surgery or if you're a revision and already had a substantial EWL in the past. Seriously, people are setting themselves up for depressed mood with these kind of expectations. (I have to remind myself of this as well and need to follow my own advice here, currently stalling since a few weeks.)
  13. I had the band for 2.5 years. It had to come out due to infection that started at the port site. My last year with the band was torturous....with pain, 2 surgeries to revise port, and a final surgery to take the band out. My surgeon offered the sleeve to me at time of removal, but I was so emotionally exhausted from my complications that I opted not to have a revision to the sleeve. 2 years and 80lbs later----I wish I would have taken his advice and gone with the revision to the sleeve. I am currently jumping through insurance hoops hoping to get the sleeve in February. This is just my personal experience. You might be much more capable of maintaining your weigh loss than me

    VSG at "low" BMI?

Glad you made your decision. Let us know what the local surgeon thinks. I have told all the people that I am going to. (total of 6) I get the "you have lost weight before" "You're not that big" I totally relate to be a professional dieter! I choose Dr. Aceves because of his experience. I think I could have possibly gotten it done locally but I am having a revision and I want a surgeon who has done revisions. I am spending a lot of money. I plan on retiring from dieting and starting a second career... Good luck to you. Keep us informed.
  15. Wondering how many Aussies we have in here as I suspect that guidelines here in Aus are different to in the USA. I was banded in June 2009 and I know at that stage food recommendations here were very different to in the US. I am now looking at revising to RNY. It would be nice to be able to compare experiences with other "locals". When I got my band I belonged to a local support group and that was great but the group no longer has regular meetings. Also most members seem to be struggling or have had their bands revised to a sleeve. So if you live in this vast land jump on and lets share

  17. Since sleeve surgery I have heartburn. I take 1 prilosec at night. I get mine from Mexico when I go there because I get 120 capsules of the generic for $3 compared to 42 for $18 in the states. The meds there are just as good as what I get in the US and much more reasonable. That is why so many people go to Algodones MX for dental and Rx's. If I do not take it the heartburn comes back. I didn't realize it was a side effect of the sleeve. I've only lost 25 lbs total and have been stuck for almost 3 yrs at current weight unless I go on a super restrictive diet of which at 70 I'm not about to do. I only need to loose 25 lbs or so. I would check BP sleeve complications groups and soon as you get Medicare consider like Berry said a RNY revision. If you close to Miami I would check out Dr's there or what ever US city would be closest to fly to. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress
  18. I'd say you are a likely candidate for another revision to RNY bypass. To have uncontrolled GERD is concerning, because it can lead to increased risk of esophageal cancer. You'd be looking at going to Mexico again, most likely, if you did choose to have a revision. (Many times RNY fixes acid issues.. it isn't guaranteed, however). A concern is your lack of aftercare in where you live. RNY requires more maintenance than the sleeve, and of course, what would you do if you had complications? Man, you are in a tough spot. While you are trying to figure things out, maybe list which medicines you've tried.. maybe there is something else... Food and drinks that commonly trigger heartburn include: Alcohol, particularly red wine. Black pepper, garlic, raw onions and other spicy foods. Chocolate. Citrus fruits and products, such as oranges and orange juice. Coffee and caffeinated drinks including tea and cola. Peppermint. Tomatoes. Also, if you really don't want a bypass, you could see if you just need a hiatial hernia repair. That might help without the long term issues of a bypass.

    ⭐Review of Revisions to RNY

*I'M NOT A SURGEON* But it appears the sleeve was separated into 2 sections (1 connected to the esophagus/ 1 connected to the duodenum) but also then the Surgeon decided to resect more of the sleeve (connected to the esophagus) to get the proper shape and size for the revision. This person may have had a longer stomach than usually, or this may be common practice. I sure wish sometimes that we had a resident surgeon on the site to ask questions...
  21. Hello All, I'm 4 days post op and what a journey! I had a band for 12 years which eroded and had to be urgently removed. My band did its job, but I gained lots of weight after removal. So, a revision to bypass was my option. I can tell you I was a complicated case due to adhesions and the discovery of 2 hernias. My poor wittle belly! I just wanted to add it will be great getting out of my fat suit and into my skinny suit again. All this pain is worth the long term result of being healthy! I love hearing others stories. It's a great way to support each other. Thank you. It's nice to know I'm not alone on this journey.
  22. I used my own. Back in the days nobody seemed to talk about goal weights. When I had my revision nobody talked about about a goal weight either.

    Vsg/bypass in Ohio anyone ? 7/28

I’ve lost about 45lbs in 7 months but overall since being with my surgeon I’ve lost a little over 100lbs. I haven’t had the revision yet but I’m hoping soon because the GERD from the hernia is no joke. Try not to be scared. It’s an amazing tool and gateway to a healthier life. Also, I asked for medicine cups to get in my water while in the hospital which helped. Having water at different temperatures also helped find one I tolerated best. And walking does help with any pain you might have. Wear a binder if they offer you one.
  25. Wow, my first wls was done on 08/01/2014. My highest recorded weight was 289 and that was underestimate. I am currently 215. I have GERD & 2 hernias! I am in pain each day. I work full-time and have insurance. I found a new doctor. It appears, he is in my corner. I have 2 avenues to pay for this revision. Remember that you are important and obesity is a real disease.
