    Day 4 after surgery....

As I had mentioned before, I have bipolar disorder and I'm starting to feel it right now.... I feel depressed and confused asking myself why I did this.... Maybe I could have lost the weight some way.... I know my dr said not to weight myself but I did and I know i've lost 16 lbs in only 10 days which is great, but I'm just not excited right now. I'm still having horrible gas pains that wake me up in the middle of the night. I am not asleep more than 10 minutes sometimes that it wakes me up. The most i'll stay asleep is maybe 90 minutes max... that is really making me tired and because I'm not eating much I don't have much energy. I do walk around my house a lot to try to metabolize the gas like the DR said, but it doesn't take it away. I get hiccups which hurt too. I still have diarreha and the imodium is somewhat helping. We'll see how the rest of the day goes. I go back to work full time tomorrow and I hope I can manage....

    when did you?

I had some clothes up to 3 sizes below what I was wearing on surgery day from all my previous weight loss attempts. Once I went through them, I would buy a couple pairs of pants and a shirt or two from the thrift store as I continued to lose and drop sizes. My old tops were easier to wear than pants even when they were too big. I would let my jeans get quite baggy and cinch up my belt before I bought another pair. I didn't buy new clothes until I knew my weight had stabilized about 9-10 months postop. I did keep one pair of 22W jeans for posterity's sake and my current size 5's still seem like doll clothes when I go to put them on!
  3. I'm in a similar situation. BMI is 40.6 I have co morbidities but my previous doctor didn't like officially diagnosing me. She said I had asthma when I was 12. Depression at 13. GERD at 15. Gastritis at 17. Ulcer at 19. Diabetes at 21. Now I'm 22 switching doctors and according to my health records. I was never diagnosed with anything other than mental health thanks to my therapist. The only co morbiditirs my insurances allows with BMI under 40 are diabetes and hypertension (or life threatening cardio problems) So I have to say "I hope I have diabetes" otherwise I'm screwed on surgery.

    Epiphany Moments

I had one of those "moments of clarity" the other day and thought I would share. I used to share my house with my uncle (who is also very overweight) and cousin (who is only slightly overweight). One of our staple meals was the good old spaghetti bolognaise, which I always saw as a very low cal, low fat meal. I used high grade minced meat (very low fat), never added oil in the cooking and had myself convinced that this was one of our "healthier meals". I would cook up a huge pot, my cousin would eat a "normal" plateful and my uncle and I would pile our plates high, then go back and polish off the remainder for "seconds". They have since moved out to their own houses and I cooked up a batch for myself just last week. The recipe I use doesn't make it easy to cut down the quantity, so I figured I'd just put the leftovers into containers and freeze them for instant on-hand meals over the next little while. I ate one cup of meat sauce/pasta mix for dinner that night and 1/2 to 1 cup for lunch the next day, then put all the rest into 1 cup servings and froze it. The epiphany came when I saw how many one-cup servings were in that huge pot!! Even after taking 2 band-sized meals out, I had EIGHT cups left over!! I had to go out and buy more small plastic containers to fit it all. There was a total of 10 cups of food in that pot! I think my cousin would have eaten about 2 cups worth, and my uncle and I would have polished off 4 cups each in one sitting! What's worse, is that quite often, I would have made an even larger pot, if we were all feeling particularly hungry, and that would likely have made 12-14 cups - and we ate it all! NO WONDER we are fat!! Have any of you had a moment like that, when you finally fully realised how screwed up were your previous perceptions of "normal sized servings"?
  6. My surgeon has me doing a pre-op diet 2 weeks before surgery consisting of slim fast low carb shakes 3 times a day and 1 small meal. He said that it helps with some fat around the liver and stomach and makes the surgery easier. He said even losing 10 pounds pre op makes a big difference for him when it comes to the surgery. Starting mine Monday. Not looking forward to it but going to try my best! :w00t:
  7. Have had 2 fills and a 3rd is scheduled for 10/19. My surgery was 8/4. I definately noticed the difference after the 2nd fill. I have a 10cc band and currently have 4 cc's in fills (2 each fill). Doctor is pleased as I have now lost 40 pounds.
  8. Hi guys. 44 yr old guy new to the site and looking to chat with other men who have had or are getting ready to have the banding procedure. Have finished the 6 months of classes that BC/BS requires and will have a date soon. In February when I started I was 298 and have lost 10 lbs as of yesterday. I suffer from severe sleep apnea and that is the motivation to have the surgery. I'm a dispatch supervisor at 911 and sitting behind a dispatch console for 21 yrs has contributed greatly to my current weight status. Recently am having a case of nerves and I'm worried about chickening out. Like most men...I have committment issues! LOL Seriously, concerned about the changes that I'm going to have do after the surgery. So, feel free to respond. Would really appreciate it!

    Last Hope

n2theswim, I'm so sorry I didn't see this sooner! First off, there is NO "only" in weight loss. 28 pounds in 3 months is fantastic!! How much would you have lost without surgery? I know that all you can see is how much you have left to lose, but you didn't gain it all in one pass and you won't lose it all in one pass. I've had several stalls on this journey, but I've managed to work my way past them. I've also discovered that during stalls I lose sizes rather than pounds. It's like the body takes a break from dropping pounds in order to shape shift. Take your measurements now, if you didn't do it pre-op, and then use them as a guideline to show you that you are still losing, even if the scale isn't moving. I've been shapeshifting for the last 3 months and lost 3 sizes, but barely dropped 10 pounds in that same time frame. Are you exercising? Exercise is key to keeping the weight loss steady and to helping insure that we don't end up with lots of loose skin when we're done losing. Exercise also produces endorphins that help keep us positive and help balance out the crazy hormones that seem to be released for men and women when the fat cells start shrinking. Please don't give up on yourself. This journey is SO worth it and YOU are worth every bit of effort you put into yourself!

    eating slowly

OK I am 7 weeks post op and have had 1 fill. I haven restriction and have only lost 10 lbs. I am looking forward to getting more fills and hopeful hitting the green zone. I just am looming for done pointers the thing I am struggling most with is not eating so fast and small bites I am a very quick eater and tend rivalry large bites. I am feeling so awkward trying to chew for so long and waiting in-between bites. Does anyone have any advice for me. I am worried that I am going to have a slip or something I has more fills. I already get stuck often from eating to fast and to big of bites.

    Pain while eating

Possibly eating too fast? Too much volume wise? My NUT told me to take a bite chew really good and go slow. After that bite, I would have to wait. Some things expand in your stomach. Also was told introduce 1 new food each day. This way if you have a food issue, you know what it is causing discomfort. Doesnt mean you cant have it ever again, he said to retry at 6 months. 13. I had to wait 10 months because there were so many obstacles to overcome. I just had surgery 9 days ago and the long wait actually made me prepared, confident, and successful. However, there were times when it felt like I was waiting forever and that the surgery may not actually happen. Learn as much as you can about bariatric surgery and diet through research or from forums like this one. Losing weight and exercising before surgery will help you in the long run and help you reach your weight loss goal quicker after surgery. Good luck!

    The Biggest Loser

I struggle watching that show because they are made to feel bad about a 5 pound loss in one week. Most of us would kill for that 5 pound loss. But they are expected to bring in 10 pounds or more a week to feel like they were successful. They exercise 6-8 hours a day to get those big losses and there is no way they can go home and maintain those unrealistic exercise hours. I have seen images of some of their past participants and many have gained weight. Some have gained about 20-30 pounds and some have gained all their weight back. Than at the finale the last of the participants are under such pressure to win they do extreme things to lose the remaining weight. Such as the gal from that one season that looked anorexic that it even shocked the coaches and the audience when she walked out. This is a horrible way to win a weight loss show.

    What's Your Sign?

What's your sign? My sign says "Stupid," but I'm told that I am a Cancerian. How would you rate your physical recovery post op (1-10, 1 being miserably long healing, 10 being fast & easy healing) A 10. I was horseback riding after two weeks. No pain meds after the recovery room and then I only gave myself one dose. How would you rate your emotional state post-op (1-10) 10. I was on an emotional high. I was so glad to have gotten it done. How would you rate your food tolerances? Can you keep things down r do you find that many food 'don't agree with you' now? 10. I can eat anything. I don't though. How would you rate your general success with the sleeve. Have you made goal or are you on target to do so? (1-10). 9. There are probably faster losers out there and people who stay on track better, but I rank. I am 30 pounds from goal. Please if you had complications, etc please give details. N/A

    Questions!

I encourage you to look through this site. You are going to find so many answers and even answers to questions that you didn't know to ask!! 1. I was self pay, so I don't think I can help you here. Since I was paying, I didn't have to wait. My cost was $10k for the surgery and a full year of after care. 2. My pain was worse than I had anticipated for the first week. However, I had esphogeal spasms because of my swelling which I'm finding out is rare. Plus, after a week, it faded and I was great! 3. The Lap Band doesn't work like Gastric Bypass, so the weightloss is lower at first. However, through good aftercare and getting fills, you get to a good restriction that allows you to control your hunger. I lost about 12 pounds on the 2 week preop diet and I lost about 10 pounds in the month following surgery. I also encourage you to research your surgeon. Even better, if they offer support groups, see if you can attend one prior to being Banded. I think aftercare is SO IMPORTANT. If your surgeon focuses a lot on that, I think it is a good sign. Good luck to you!!

    Hey guys!!

It's been a while since I've posted anything or even really been on here....life has been busy and so much is going on! I just want to say that I've been reading through everyone's blogs this morning and I'm soooo proud of each and every one of you for all of your hard work and dedication! I am coming up on my 1 year mark on Sept. 18th and it's absolutely blown my mind that it has even been a year now. Life really does fly by! My year of being banded has been a good one....I've lost 50 lbs in that year (and although it's going slow) I'm very proud of that accomplishment. Before surgery the thought of losing 50 lbs was exhausting to think about. I feel sooo much better now, and have so much more confidence. I go back October 4th for an (dare I even say it) UNFIL! I'm actually too tight right now and have been since May. My husband and I are taking a cruise in October and I've decided that I want to "enjoy" my cruise. I am going to still watch what I eat and eat a healthy breakfast and lunch....but if I want dessert at dinner, I'm going to have it. lol I'm trying to get off about 10 more lbs before the cruise. Keep up the great work everyone!!!! :tt2:

What are you all doing for workouts?

@@armywife79 oh my goodness! How horrible to have to go through that. You poor girl!!! Oh I know c-dif, once you smell it once, you never forget. Lol. I hear that bowel obstructions are common also due to dehydration. I will try very hard to hydrate and sip every 2 minutes and use a timer set to go off to remind me while awake lol. My surgeon removed quite a bit of scar tissue when I had my band removed last week so I am hoping it doesn't grow back too fast before my bypass. For every surgery, we grow scar tissue and if it's removed, more will grow back sadly. Adhesions suck! Haha and I bet you had quite a few of those from your c-section. How many incisions did you have with your bypass? I am still sore at my port site. It's still healing, I wish it would heal faster. I hope it will be healed by the time I have my surgery. I tend to heal a bit slower over the past 10 years. I think it is because I was on the brink of diabetes before the band.

    Magic Number Of Cc's

I was banded on Jan 17th....I've had 3 fills so far in my 10 cc band. Currently at 6.6 cc's and feel this is my sweet spot, although mornings are VERY tight and I still PB or slime if I eat too fast or do not chew well enough. best wishes, Stacey

    Wildly Varying Post Op Diets

My surgeon explained it to me with the failure rate they are willing to accept. In a manufacturing facility, they strive for a certain degree of perfection - quality assurance, max failure rate etc. This is reached through quality control and certain ways of manufacturing the widgets. The higher quality you want to reach, the more careful you have to be, the more expensive your tools are and the better your people have to be trained. Makes sense, right? That's why some car manufacturer have a much better record than a Yugo or so :-) He said the same is true for surgeons. A surgeon's practice has a certain percentage of failure they are OK to accept, in this case failure is issues with the staple line, leaks etc. I believe it is pretty obvious that the longer you are on Clear Liquids (and then full liquids), the more time you give your staple line to heal. Some practices are willing to take more risks in order to make patients happy. Others are really strict to avoid issues as much as possible and are probably overly cautious. Believe me, I was 2 weeks on clear liquids, and then 4 weeks on full liquids - I was NOT a happy camper. It is just an area that you cannot look at. Only if it fails (and it is too late) do you know you did it wrong. How do you know you are doing fine? Just because you are not in pain (or not in pain yet) doesn't mean you are fine. The earlier you eat solid food, the earlier you stress your freshly operated stomach. Some people heal faster, others heal slower -- but no one knows that for your particular case. Say 90% of all patients are good to go after 2 weeks. 6% need 4 weeks to heal on clear/full liquids. The remaining 4% of all patients need the full 6 weeks to heal on clear/full liquids. You can either take a chance on those 4% and make your 96% happier, or you can say I don't want to risk it for the 4% so everyone has to be on clear/full liquids for 6 weeks. Or you take a chance on 10% and say everyone can go on soft foods after 2 weeks. It's a question of statistics, probably involves insurance rates and other issues too, how a surgeon decides. The numbers are totally made up though, he told me some but I forgot. Does that make sense?

    Diarrhea for 2 weeks +

Went to the doc and he said he didn't think this had anything to do with my sleeve. I guess a copule weeks of diarrhea is somewhat "normal". He said if it lasts more than a month or if there is blood or anything in the stool it's cause to freak out, but I'm probably just going through a phase. I'm also only going to the bathroom a couple times a day vs 10+ times a day, which is another cause for concern. Anyway - crisis diverted!
  23. I do not get banded until October 4th. I am obsessive, in my defense I have waited for this for 10 years... However it is darn near all I think about, read about and want to talk about. I am a planner so I am planning. I think my husband is getting annoyed with the constant lap band chatter. But, school starts tomorrow and he will miss me and be happy for the chatter. Lol Pre op - found shakes and recipes for shakes I find to be yummy after taste testing, even found how to make Protein pudding and ice cream so I can feel like I am eating. I got this way because I love food, so soon I can eat healthy and enjoy my food more by making it with more thought. The term I heard used was "Thoughtful Eating" and that is going to be my mantra! (I am currently a speed eater). NEED to work on eating smaller bites slower. Post op - I have made homemade Soup stocks and broths added whey protein to them and froze 1 oz individual servings. I have beef, chicken, and a cabbage/ham for the clear food stage. Any other get ready early ideas would be great. Thanks!
  24. Hello all I'm 5' 7" HW 240 SW 230 CW 176 GW 150 Was size 18. now size 12, I have a pair of 10s that I can squeeze on. I like to wear these around the house and tell my kids that the can borrow my pants if they want. They roll their eyes. The weight, so far, has not "fallen off" as I see it does for some others. I did not go from a size 18 to a size 2 I am splendidly average, and for that, I'm jazzed! I have a ways to go, I will arrive.
