Fear of weight loss making me ineligible for surgery
athena3127 replied to pindoctor's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like the same thing my Mom had to do. Maintain and not loose. She lost a bit and her nut advised to to be careful because she could work herself out of the surgery.! so she watched her weight and was careful not to loose . -
tighter band 2months since fill
TheBandedPeach replied to tannie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You may have something stuck and be "slime-ing". "Slime-ing" is when food gets stuck in the stoma and you automatically start slowly spitting up slimy saliva. I heard that warm/hot water helps open up your band and cold stuff can tighten it. I would get some hot tea or coffee right away and immediately call your doctor. Especially if you think the band may have slipped. You may chew properly, but if you have chugged water instead of sipped, it can be hard on the band too.
Created by MyFitnessPal - Nutrition Facts For Foods
-
The start of my journey began about two years ago. I started having bad stomach issue where they pain was getting bad. At frist the doctor thought it was my meds. Then they thought it was milk and other foods. Then moved on to stress and work related. I know none of them will admit it but I believe some even thought I was making it up. Very time I ate no matter what I ate I was in pain. I went in for a test where they have the machine watch me eat an egg sandwich. My egg sandwich did not move at all from my stomach. After four hours the guy giving the test sent me home and send it is not going any where. So then I was told that I have Gastroparesis really bad. They sent me to doctor Duperier in San Antonio hoping he would do the gastrectomy (which is just like the by-pass surgery). He gave me two choices which were I could have a machine put into my stomach every time I eat I get to push a button that would send an electric shock to my stomach or I could do the gastrectomy. Well at that first appointment he could not get over that I had a BMI of 65 and that I was under 35 years old. He told me that I need to loose weight and get off my pain meds. I had to say that eatting was never a problem for me. Once the pain hit take a pain pill eat as much and whatever I wanted then go to bed. Made life boring however I could do something good. Doctor Duperier said that a lot of people who have gastroparesis were unable to eat. I felt really bad for those people because that means they did not have has good of pain pills has I did. So I got with Jodi (Doctor Duperier's Dietitain) and went over my diet and portion control. I also had to stop the pain meds which was harder than the diet and portion control but in the long run help with it because when I was in so much pain I could not eat. I lose right around 40 pounds before surgery and drop my BMI to 55. I did have surgery on October 15, 2012. So far so good. just welcoming soft protien food into my diet now. The only problem I have is I need to burp and can't. I am walking every day. I am almost will to try again to have a good burp. I think that if I could make the walls shake I would cry out in pure joy. So I joy RNY to meet different people and get idea for issues as they come up. I would love to get any ideas on how to burp and/or anyone else who did the surgery for gastroparesis. Thanks, Cheryl

Yessssssssssssss!!!! It is VERY Possible!! As Tiff said I have lost 172 pounds in a year. I am not at "goal".. which is 160. I got to figureing out that I lost 191 pounds from my highest weight of 373... but I use my "day of surgery" weight of 354. I NEVER dreamed I would have lost that much weight... I just knew I had to do something. And it turned out to be the BEST thing I have ever done for myself!! So yes....... it is very obtainable!!

We are changing our insurance over to my husband's plan on 7/1/07. Of coarse my first fear is denial because we will have just gotten the insurance into affect, then I remembered out of habit ( I always lie about my weight) I lied about my weight on the forms we filled out because I was afraid my husband would look at them on his way to work. Anyway I knocked off about 25 or so lbs. Have I completely messed up my chances w/insurance?

I have completed all of my pre-approval testing as of last week (Mamo, pap, ultrasound on liver and gallbladder, echocardiogram, nutritional class 1, psych eval, visit with cardiologist) and got flying colors on all of them. I also have a statement from my orthopedic guy that I need to lose 100 pounds before I can have my knee replacement (we are all hoping losing the weight will mean I won't have to have the knee replacement for a much longer period of time). Now waiting for the insurance company to do their thing (Tricare Prime) and approve the RnY surgery (apparently the only bariatric surgery they cover). I was hoping for the surgery in mid to late October, but we may not have the insurance okay until then, then we have to schedule the surgery, so I'm hoping early November. I have a large and important event scheduled at work the week of Thanksgiving and must be back to work before then. Surgeon has me starting a pre-op diet now to get used to what the post-op diet will be like (primarily Protein with veggies). We live too far from a gym (and it's too expensive anyway), so hubby and I are going for a home fitness gym and I have nine acres property I can walk everyday (as well as miles of country road). I've been caffeine free for three weeks, sugar and alcohol free for two weeks, bubbly diet soda free for three weeks... working on learning to chew.... having time to practice the new habits and give up the bad ones is good, but not sure how long I can really hold out with out the help of the surgery. I'm worried the insurance people are going to drag their feet or worse yet, deny me. I started out 120 pounds over my ideal weight of 128. I've lost a couple of pounds in the last week thanks to the Post-op diet (but feel like I'm starving and craving sugar something fierce). Surgeon tells me I have no worries about being approved even though I am healthy despite my weight. My weight alone should be enough she says. Any experience with Tricare Prime?

Starting Liquid Diet Tomorrow
Bandista replied to staceymeaux's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh for crying out loud, I love my band! Whatever weight loss surgery you get, the main thing is you are choosing your own health and happiness. You are showing up for yourself. Way to go! And keep us posted as things unfold. Wild! PS I had a two week liquid pre-op -- loved it that FOR ONCE every pound lost was one I wouldn't be seeing again. True that. -
Anyone banded around 11/26/2012? I am 33 year old and my pre weight was 250 and my current weight is 236. I have 5 cc in my band and can't stop thinking I should be doing better? Any opinions welcomed.

You will not get instant results and I learned that early on. Then I realized slow is the best way because any other nurse I worked with that had gastric bypass and NOT lap band lost fast and has gained it all back. So relax and it will happen. Remind yourself of your rules...eat slower 30 min, small bites chew well...this a life change not weight loss sprint. By the way I was banded 4/2012 and as of today I have lost 51 lbs so for 4months out you are doing well. The numbers going down is always good!!

It is a gastric roller coaster, indeed. You had me laughing like hell at that description, man. Accurate and funny. Could be either. I remember my pre-op diet very well. It was calorie deficit and also put me into ketosis after about 4-5 days. It was no surprise, as I'd been there-done-that during my many weight loss attempts in the past. I was comforted with the knowledge that the feeling puny only lasts a day or two if you'll stay the course and get through it. If you cave in and have carbs, then, you'll simply prolong the struggle and keep on feeling like hell. Stay the course and gut it out. You'll get used to the ketosis quickly and your body will adapt. You'll amplify the weight loss, most likely, too. Enjoy feeling those pounds drop off and know that you are underway. Your ship is sailing already.....plotting a course to a sunny beach somewhere where you'll enjoy strutting around nekkid.....or closer to it than you've dared think about. The magic is already happening. Go with it.

Quick Question...
TerryInez replied to seelessofme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't be discouraged--we just have to be patint. I had my surgery Oct 2nd and I also started at about the same weight (223). I am now at 199. I lost the first 18 lbs during the first 2 weeks post op and then things just slooowed down to where I was afraid I'd never be able to reach my goal. At one point I even gained a lb - very discouraging seeing how I followed all the rules exactly as was told to do. I won't give up--I get on this forum daily and see where others have had this type of slow weight but eventually reach their goal! This gives hope and courage to keep on track. Today I finally lost a lb after over a week of being the same--hooray! Don't give up, have faith and you'll get there. -
Since October 11th, I've only lost 5 pounds....is this normal? I'm nearing 4 months and see that 6 months honeymoon stage getting closer. I thought I'd have lost more by now. To date, I'm down 32 pounds. Am I going to have a greater weight loss? I started at 224 lbs.

The first time I went for my psych eval, the therapist was a wackadoodle and talked about Chinese medicinal weight loss for a long time then told me my hour was up and and that I would have to come back for a second appointment. I was so frustrated to learn that a second visit was totally atypical and was also upset at the money I wasted with this lady. I quickly cancelled my appointment and went to another therapist. True enough, I did have to pay for two separate appointments but I really liked the second therapist, she wrote my letter after one visit, and I didn't have to give another dime (or listen to the crazy rumblings of) the first nut job!!! By the way, she had even told me that I should be lucky she "understood" my time crunch and that's why she thought she could complete my eval in just 2 sessions opposed to the 4 it usually takes. What a load of crap!

I had to see my therapist twice. The first time was mainly introductory while the second was more in depth and he basically "quizzed" me about the surgery to see if I understood the ramifications of it, the mental, physical, and emotional. It wouldn't have been a good idea to lie about being depressed. It'd be like lying to a mechanic about what's wrong with your car. Therapists and doctors are there to help you, so being truthful about your issues is what will benefit you in the long run. I told my therapist about my depression (heck, I even cried right there in his office) and I was approved for surgery. He didn't recommend I see him after surgery, but he does want me to go to some of the support group meetings specifically for weight loss surgery. It has helped.

I tried all different types of eating disorders back in the day to loose weight. I've since have never considered the thought of doing it again. I even went to a therapist about it a few years ago. Will this hinder me in my approval process from uhc? I'm wondering if I can use my meetings with my therapist as help for my approval? Or if my past eating disorders will hurt me?

Hi everyone! My surgery date is set for December 9th. I am starting my prop diet on November 25 th. I don't have all of the details on it yet, but know that it will be 800 calories max per day. I am super nervous about this. I was thinking it would be great if I could lose some weight before the prop diet, so that the honeymoon phase of the sleeve could focus on not the first 20 lbs but the second and third 20 . What do you all think? Any recommendations on diet for the next two weeks? I'm meeting with my nutritionist again on the 18th. Thanks!

I'm on the all liquid diet. I'm on antibiotics (I have a history of staph infection with surgeries) I am very anxious about this. I am second guessing myself. I HAVE to lose weight. I weigh 240 and am 5'7". I played college ball and at my most fit I was 160# and skinny. So I would like to lose 80#. I am a very motivated person but after 3 preg. back to back I have put on wt :blushing: I've been reading and doing alot of research. Anyone else have horrible last minute jitters??? How do I mentally get through this?? My sis and mom both have a band so I'm very familiar with everything....just SCARED!!!!!!

Ms skinniness replied to Harpo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Jason, everyone's body will lose the weight at different time frames. Just know that the weight will come off if you follow the directions of your surgeon by eating healthy. Actually, the one great thing you have going for you is that your a man..... Men lose weight at a faster pace than us women...... So sit back and enjoy the ride and please take your weight loss on a day by day basis..... I know your going to rock that sleeve! -

Fear of weight loss making me ineligible for surgery
alwaysvegas replied to pindoctor's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was worried about the same thing because I was on the weight loss path before surgery. My surgeon's office said that my insurance (Aetna) goes by the weight/BMI that I first took at the surgeon's office. I lost 50 lbs before surgery and that was fully supported by my surgeon and nutritionist. No problems with my insurance. My insurance also required two years of weight history also, so that factors into the insurance approval, in addition to the co-morbidities. It's actually worse if you gain any weight before surgery as some insurance companies will deny you (even a 1lb gain), so trying to 'maintain' may or may not work. If in doubt, call your insurance. Best of luck to you! -
I am a newbie here, lots of great info thanks. I have cigna, I started my 6 months of nutrition counsel teo months a go, my BMI was about 37-38 in the two months I put on about ten lbs, the nutritionist says that it won't bear well if I gain weight during the six months of eval. I don't want to disqualify myself. I do have co morbidities, HBP. Will the small weight gain make me lose my insurance coverage? Thanks for the help

Keto Diet and the timeline please help.
redlirpa posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am just in the initial stages for pre op my surgeon appointment is on Tuesday but as I go grocery shopping I want to fill my fridge with the pre op diet foods, and have read most doctors diet pre surgery is keto. I have been doing the whole30 and have lost 30 pounds in the past 3 months and can transition to keto if that's what I'm going to be put on, in my research I'm seeing that keto is listed as the worst diet of 2017 and whole 30 was right with it. My bariatric may require 3 months dietician, exercise and weight loss. My insurance doesn't, Just failed attempts and need. I'm curious about keto diet recommendations, how much weight are you suppose to lose before surgery? How many carbs do you eat to be in ketosis, how do deal with the side effects? Thank you -
What words, phrases, cliches have you heard that resonated with your weight loss journey? "Words are units of energy" is something I heard once. I started using that phrase when I have struggled with journalling. The more I write about and talk about my feelings and what is going on with me, the more energy is expended. "Tears weigh more than fat." I heard this on a weight loss reality show recently. Being able to feel my feelings and shed some tears is also critical for me. Anyone else have something that works for them?

Fear of weight loss making me ineligible for surgery
pindoctor replied to pindoctor's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the suggestions. I am someone who launches myself into things wholeheartedly so maintaining rather than trying to lose is a bit challenging. I did ask someone in the first day of visits about my concern about losing weight and being ineligible. I seen to remember someone "hinting" that perhaps only losing a few pounds would be best. -
That thought crossed my mind then. 8 months later I am 3 pounds from goal. The biggest fear was that I would be fainting from starving. Didn't happen, I'm stronger than I have been in 35 years. Your fear has a formidable opponent named science. It is not absolutely impossible that you would not lose weight but it is more impossible than Nancy Pelosi changing to Republican.
