Hi, Beth! Actually, the one saving grace for me (and probably the reason I was able to have surgery this year...) is that I'm not teaching any more. I've been a teacher for 14 years and finally left the classroom this year. I work in a position that allows me to make my own schedule--a quality control position, if you will--where I still do some work with kids but mostly with struggling teachers. I often model and co-teach, but mostly observe and conference, making suggestions for implementing change. I felt guilty going on about how other people could make changes in their lives and had so little control over this part of my life...so it was time for me. As far as going to the gym, it was something that I needed. I make time for myself to do this--as I do a bi-weekly manicure!--because I deserve that time to myself. It takes less than an hour. In fact, if you have a treadmill at home, you can do it in far less time! Get up a half hour before the kids do....get on when you've put them to bed....do it while they're napping, etc. You make time to fold laundry, make time for this, too. Initially it's tiring and will add to your stress, but anyone on here will tell you it adds to your energy. You won't want to do more than 20 minutes when you start, anyway, so you don't ave to make that much time. You owe it to yourself to do this. You've committed to having surgery, now it's time to stick to the diet as much as possible and complete the circle. Think of how much more weight you can lose if you give yourself every possible advantage!!! Good luck. You've lost a ton of weight! Keep up the great work!!!

Hi all. I have recently upped my workout to 2x a day because my weight loss has been very slow lately. I was in a car accident in 2001 which left me with some back problems. This limits my exercise options. Currently, I am going to the gym in the morning and riding a stationary bike for 5 miles and at night I walk the indoor track 4-5 miles while my daughter is at practice. I average about 13 mph on the bike and 16-17 minute miles. My calorie intake is between 800-1100 (usually right around 900) and Protein, Water and everything else is on target) According to the calculations I have, I should be burning 230 calories on the bike and between 280-300 walking. My question is with an average burn of around 500 just with my workouts, how the hell is the scale not budging? Do I need to change my intake?

I'm so glad you finally were able to get the leak test done and glad you are home now. Gratz on the weight loss. 17 lbs! Sweet. Best of luck on your recovery and continued weight loss. -
I was banded on April Fools Day this year. It took me about 4 fills (had one last week) to get to where there was any restriction felt. I have a large band that holds 14 cc's and I now have 7 cc's. I started with 2cc's and got fills in 1cc increments. I have not been dropping weight very fast, but I think this last fill is enough to do it. Just be honest with your doc and they will increase your fill as needed. It's a process. You have to be patient

I love my treadmill and utilize all the time. The features I like the most is the Ifit computerized trainer system. Fan, incline to 12%, 10 mph speed. Holds weight of 300 pounds. It monitors my pulse. And it has a cut off switch. It is a Norditrack. Happy walking.

I am glad that you talked to him. Someone that truly loves you sees past the outer and loves you no matter what, and he obviously does. He will be a good support person through your surgery. My husband and I have been together for almost 14 years, and he also never said anything once about my weight.

Not to overplay the amateur psychologist here, but my experience with guy friends is that short guys and really thin guys seem to have more issues with self-esteem and confidence than guys of more average height and weight. Maybe even moreso than fat guys in some ways, because being thin and/or short isn't considered "macho." It's also hard for really thin guys to gain weight, maybe even harder than for fat guys to lose weight. And it's impossible to get taller.

I decided to just ask him. He seems to think he will miss it. He may, but he won't miss all that comes with it. Mainly the naps and me being in pain all the time. I had to make sure he knows I am not doing this because I think it will make him happy. I am doing this for me. So I can play with my kids without SOB. So I can catch my daughter if she tries to run out into the street, cause, Man, is she fast....and sneaky! I am doing this so I can keep doing the job that I love, because, right now, It hurts so much and a job higher in management with paperwork and meetings is actually looking good, and I don't want that. I think he just needed to know that if something happens to me during surgery, it's not his fault. He has never said anything negative about my weight in seven years, not even when we fight. (Most of our fights are about me sleeping all the time). In short, even though I don't think he will miss the fatness once its gone, I'm glad he felt the need to tell me he loves me just the way I am.

I live in Texas and my surgery was done on 11/11/11 (easy day to remember, huh). That was 3 weeks ago today. I have lost only 7 pounds in those 3 weeks. This was disappointing to me but after reading everyone else's experience I guess that is normal. My first fill is scheduled for next Thursday, 12/9. I cant wait! I loved the way I was not hungry and did not even think about food right after the surgery. I want that feeling to come back. My surgeon was Dr John Marsden and I was so pleased. He is not only caring and concerned about my journey, he has a great sense of humor and you are instantly comfortable with him. I am a little different than a lot of his patients in that I am starting my journey weighing 200 pounds and my goal is 130. I have only 70 pounds to lose. Afraid of being criticized I have only told 2 people (outside my family) about the surgery. But I am only 5'2" tall and I have a small frame so Im not carrying the extra weight very well. When I got married 21 years ago I weighed 120 and my wedding dress was size 8P. My goal is to get back into that dress. Since I dont have a support group of friends Im excited about this online support group.

Denver area, still investigating

You are in the right place and I am your girl. I am 51 (52 in less than a month) BEST THING EVER!!! Let me address your quesiton in order. How to get started - You need a surgeon you can trust. I went to several free seminars that were offered. Then I went to the local hospitals and asked the nurses who they like working with and who they recommend. That cut my options down from huge to a very few, then I spoke with the staff in the operating rooms, who do they like and has the best reputation with the patiets. For me it was easy, only one name came back and it was the best decision I made besides having it done. The surgeons office should handle everything from there and tell you what you need. They took care of me and appeased my insurance company and that is no small task. How long does it last? Well as long as you let it work for you, The lap band is only a tool to assist you. It is not going to "make" you lose weight. It provides an option. You will still have to make wise chioces, exercise, even watch your intake of calories to ensure you get enough but not to many. I was on blood pressure meds and after my first 15 pounds I was off all meds. I see over and over people with your health issues turn it all around, all of it. It can be done, it is what needs to be done and you can do it. It is a mind set you have to get into. I had the procedure done on a Wed. and was back at work Tuesday (only because Monday was a holiday). Some people go back before that. It really is a simpe procedure. You will be required to do a pre-op diet to help jump start you, and then there will be resrictions as your procedure heals. This will not make you drop 100 pounds in 3 months. It is a slower, less aggressive, but successful way to lose. You SHOUILD NOT need tummy tucks if you do the exercise as instructed. I was lucky enough to find a wonderful surgeon and he has walked with me every step of the way. I do not argue, I just do what I am told. THe day his advice is no longer working, I will do it on my own, but that is just not in my future. He is awesome. Really check out your options and go with the "right" one. I hope this helps, Please let me know what other questions you have. I am committed to helping anyone who wants it. Keep us posted. [ -
That is what I did; well, I didn't go to any seminars but I started at a 207 weight. One of the reasons I did it was because of the 'up and down'. Mentally and physically, I was tired of it and from it. Just because you are at 200 pounds does not mean you should not do it. What is your BMI? That is something I would look closely at if I were you.

is there anyone else that has had the surgery with a starting weight of 200lbs. Thinking about going to the seminar, i am tired of up and down weight loss. thanks for any answers.

Aww, that's such a great feeling!! It's amazing how we forget all the fun, 'little things' that come with losing weight. I find these non scale victories to be even better than whatever the scale has to say! Congrats!!

They can always give you something for the pain and the incisions are smaller than I thought. There will be some scars, though. Don't be afraid, though. Think of the gains, not the pains!

I told my trainer before I had surgery (was working out then) and her first reaction was "No! Do it through exercise and diet!" I told her the surgeon and my doctor agreed this was my best chance for successful weight loss. After that, she acted excited for me about the surgery and worked my butt off leading up to it. When I was cleared to go back after 4 weeks, she wanted to hear all about what I could eat and if I had any restrictions, etc. She also told me to let her know if anything felt like it could be hurting my stomach or abdomen. She is so excited about my weight loss and now acts like a partner in my success. I don't understand why you wouldn't tell someone who you're partnering with to improve your health. However, I don't think it changes their plan for you... unless you're very close out from surgery maybe.

Paula you looked so great in your family picture! Congrats on your great weight loss!! Where exactly (if you don't mind my asking. if you do just tell me! ) are you in Louisiana? We lived in Lake Charles for several years and LOVED it. We went to Holly Beach very often and it's so sad to see the damage. If you're 30 mins north of Holly Beach I"m assuming Lake Charles, Sulphur or Hackberry but I could totally be off too! Several of our good friends in Lake Charles and Sulphur lost almost everything. Homes, businesses, etc. So sad. We're headed down to help one of these days soon. Anyway just wanted to say hi and thanks for posting the pictures.

I think my scale is trying to be funny
readysetg070113 replied to backpacking5's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Mine does the same thing I bought a moderately priced scale and I try to make sure it's in the same spot on floor yes I count the tiles to make sure it's always in the same place lol. I fluctuate about 2-5 lbs so although I weigh everyday ( I know I shouldn't) I only record my Monday morning weight. Since I started preop on Monday n was banded on a Monday I'm afraid to but a $100.00 scale just for the same thing to happen. Sigh.... N once a month at surgeon is not enough for me n I weigh3lbs more on his scale -
I had the Lap Band in 2005. While I lost about 80% of my excess weight, my life with the band was very miserable. I had horrible reflux and later found out that I had been living with a slipped band for years. I had gastric sleeve April of last year and am very happy with my decision. No significant complications and I feel great! One thing: when I had my sleeve done, my surgeon said that the procedure took him at least an extra half hour while he sorted through the scar tissue from the band. From what I've read on this form, that is quite common when you see revision from lap band. For me, all that scar tissue and extra work to deal with it made my initial recovery a little different. I saw others talking about feeling great and being up walking right away. I felt like I had been hit by a Mac Truck! I couldn't tolerate the laps around the nurse's station and was lucky to make it about 20 feet down the hall. I stayed an extra night in the hospital and was a little more on track by day 2.

I have started adding powder (odorless, flavorless) Fiber to my Protein shakes. I am still in the liquids phase though, only 7 days post op. I am planning to continue having most of my breakfast's as Protein Shakes though since I love the taste and they are a quick fix in the morning. I was only going #2 every 4-5 days since I started my liquid diet but used to go every day before and was proud of that fact about myself. Lord knows I don't want to get constipated! UGH...Like the one person said, I don't want to gain poop weight! LOL Anyway, since adding the fiber powder to my shakes I have started going every other day which is way better! You could add it to yogurt, pudding, oatmeal, just about anything. When I get to move on the "real food" I was thinking I'd add it to my chili and even gravy or some sauces whenever I have them. I really can't even tell it's in there except what happens on the "other end" Good luck to you as taking care of your colon is so very important!

My surgery is 10/16, I start my pre-op diet Wednesday. I'm also on 2 other meds for my sugar, hopefully it will improve with losing some of this weight. My last weight check was 253.

Hi, I had my surgery Dec 10, 2003 in Baton Rouge, La. I live in Panama City, Florida. The trip to get a fill is 4-41/2 hour drive, longer now since the hurricane in September destroyed the I - 10 bridge in Pensacola. I have only lost 40lbs. Some days I am happy with this because at least I haven't gained and before the surgery I was steady gaining. I feel I am in more control. I think the reason my loss has been so slow is that it is hard to get the fills I need. I work 60 + hours a week and have 2 kids that are well involved in after school activities and my husband works just as much as I. The only day my Dr. schedules for fills is on Fridays, this is the busiest day of the week for me so I am not able to go as i should. I hope that one day there will be a doctor closer so i won't have the long drive and can get the proper timely fills. I have no regrets for the surgery as i said before I am just glad not to have gained. I get discouraged because people think of this as gastric bypass and I haven't lost what they expect and get alot of grief from that but, there has always been issues with my weight my entire life so, I'm not going to let it bother me anymore. If I only lost 1 lb a month I will be happy that I have not gained.
