    Working out after surgery

    I don't work out at the gym, but I work out with a trainer doing bodyweight exercises, heavy weights, and all that fun stuff. It was 2 months for me - when I was first cleared for exercise I still couldn't lift more than 10 lbs, so I wasn't very motivated to do it until I was a little further out. I also wasn't supposed to do a lot of exercise (beyond walking) until I was eating at least 800-1000 calories/day consistently. And that took me a while. Honestly, between eating so little and just the natural time it takes to recover from what is a major surgery, 2 months was right for me. When I started back with the trainer, I went slow on weights and ab work until I was confident with my body being ready for it.

    Upper Endoscopy

    I don’t have my surgery date yet, they are finishing up my testing and evaluations this week and next. I’m expecting I will get that (or a better idea if it will be July or August) at my appointment on the 21st. My last check in appointment (they will weigh me to make sure I didn’t gain weight) is July 7th, so I’m assuming it will be in July or early August at the latest. Do you have yours yet?

    Exercise - Who even am I???

    I'm 9 months out and I haven't felt like I've had more energy than before surgery until this week. I feel restless if I don't get enough exercise, and I want to work out twice a day. I'm trying to be careful and vary the exercise from day to day so I don't get injured, and I still have a tendency to inertia, but it's definitely a huge change. I notice since I'm losing weight my Apple Watch tells me I'm burning fewer calories for the same amount of exercise 😪 I know that's to be expected, but it's getting harder and harder to get to 500 calories burned in a day. Do you get hungry from exercise? I only find I am hungrier after swimming.

    Yes, they do. I scheduled one for next week. I just looked at my last results from Feb 2022, and I've only lost about 20 lbs since then so it might not be too different. I am feeling a bit too obsessed with my weight/stats at this point, but oh well...

    My First Binge :(

    Yeah I struggled early on too I found at the 2 month mark things started to get easier and Improved each month from there. I reverted back to the previous stages too, I was on soft foods for ages. I didn't have a goal weight from my surgeon but I had a a tentative goal of 70kg which I reset when I was 73kg to 60 kg as I still had a bit a fat to loose. I don't know if I will get to 60kg as my weight loss has slowed right down but it has slowed due to some of my food and mainly drink choices (coke) . I was really surprised how easy the "binge" was and how much I was able to eat but you are right now I know I can take steps for it not to happen again

    Thank you for your kind words. The best advice I would give anyone is to ‘be compliant.’ Follow your doctor and nutritionist’s protocol to a ‘T.’ I read some posts here and the difficulties people are having, granted, sometimes, yes, crap happens. But some of the stuff I read here boggles my mind. People pay little or no attention to the protocol they have been given. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would sabotage themselves that way. if someone had told me one week ago how amazing I would feel right now, I would have not a single second of nervousness or anxiety. I have a friend who had VSG done in October. She is also extremely compliant. She has lost 90 lbs and is at her goal weight. She is off her thyroid meds, and she says this surgery is the best thing she has ever done. I feel the same way about my surgery and I’m not even a week out. im already on a lower dose of my blood pressure meds. Follow the protocol, follow the process. Don’t cheat. These people know what they are doing. Good luck and let me know how it goes! You will rock this!

    My First Binge :(

    Ah ok, i thought so as i couldnt imagine u could do this straight after surgery. I had sleeve done 4 weeks ago and im struggling with soft food stage, keep getting sick. Im reverting back to soups for few days to see if it helps. Did you manage to lose your goal weight? I wouldnt beat yourself up about your binge, i imagine its going to happen from time to time, guess the hard part is trying to ensure it doesnt happen too often.     Weight loss after one year?

    Some do some don’t. It can depend on how much weight you had to lose, your rate of loss, etc. I lost for almost another 11 months after I reached goal at 6 months. It was extremely slow the last few months but it was the weight my body wanted to be at (my new set point). Generally it is more difficult to lose weight in your second year. Your hunger starts to return, you’re eating larger portions, etc. If you’re doing strength training & putting on muscle that will be distracting from any weight loss you may be still having. Remember muscle weighs more than fat. Also everyone’s rate of loss slows the closer to their goal weight. Not every one reaches their goal. Gastric sleeve patients tend to lose 50-70% of the weight they have to lose (difference between starting weight & ideal weight). This is where the average lie at about 3 yrs post surgery. You will reach a weight that genetics, your new set point & metabolism are happy at & also a weight that you can sustain while living your life how you want.
  9. Do you still lose weight after being 1 year post op? I've been incorporating strength training in my routine these last 2 months but haven't noticed any weight loss and I'm nearing 1 year. I'm a few pounds away from my goal so I'm really hoping I can reach it soon.
  10. Oestrogen is stored in your fat & as you lose weight the excess oestrogen is released into your blood stream. You may experience heavier or lighter periods, more or less frequent cycles, mood swings, etc. You can also become more fertile so double up on contraception just in case. I agree with the others: slow down between bites: minutes not seconds. Try using a teaspoon to keep your bites small too. Glad you tried going back to soups first a little while. Some people just need a little longer on a stage. We all recover at our own pace. See how you go again with soft foods in a few days. Also some foods don’t sit as well & we don’t enjoy them. This is usually temporary but you may have to do a bit of trial & error when reintroducing foods at first.

    Loose skin vs. abdominal fat

    I had a DEXAscan - it's one of the more accurate ways of finding out how much fat you have. Not the kind you get at a doctor's office - those just measure bone density. But the kind they have at university sports labs or those commercial places like DEXAFit. They'll run you around $100-150. But it'll tell you what your fat percentage is, among other things. I had mine when I weighed 146 lbs. I wanted to see how much more I needed to lose. I was surprised when the technician said - "you're done. You have 22% body fat - you don't need to lose any more!". (I've since gained weight though, unfortunately....). I'm glad I did it, though - otherwise I would have kept going.

    I agree with those above about speaking with a therapist about the disordered eating as well as the anxiety and depression. Also about seeing your nutritionist/ dietician about changes you can make to your diet to help you lose some weight.

    June 21st Peeps

    Well it sounds like you are all doing well on your liver shrink diet which would be my first piece of advice. I had very little pain post op and after my dr commented twice on how well I did on the liver shrink diet I asked the NP if the two were related and she said that getting the liver out of the way definitely makes the surgery easier which means less bruising and stuff so yes that did help. The second piece of advice is to not compare yourself to others during your recovery or weight loss phase. We are all here to cheer each other on but every one of our paths will be unique. Don’t get discouraged if you are a slower loser or have more stalls than others. Trust the process and the weight will come off if you just follow the plan.

    Yeh I really don't know how stalls and breaking of stalls function no matter how much I read on it LMAO. Though upping calories is a lot of work for me if I adhere to my diet guidelines. I don't want to feel like I am continuously eating throughout the day just to up my calories. I think I'll stick to whatever calories I can consume comfortably without pressuring myself to increase or decrease. Average for me also about 2ish Lbs/week but that includes all the weight I have lost in the first 6 months. Though, I have noticed that every other month I stall or lose slowly. So may be that's the pattern for myself, which again is fine as long as it is spiralling downwards. Just hope I don't stop anytime soon lol. I still have tons of inches especially in the middle which need to come off to a reasonable amount for my body to look symmetrical. Anyhow, let's see how my body progresses. It's good to keep this thread updated to see how everyone is doing.
  15. How do you tell whether the pudginess you have left is loose skin or if it's still mostly/all belly fat? I am wearing a size 10/medium depending on the brand. I have a 32.5 in waist, and I'm at a BMI of 29. My weight loss has slowed down tremendously this month (today is exactly 9 months out). I thought it was all belly fat, but it's starting to feel a lot "squishier" and "looser" in the skin in my abdomen. I really don't plan to have plastics (although the FUPA is redonkulous!) but I am trying to gage how much more of my belly fat I can expect to lose.

    Do you bake for family?

    I eat desserts out (part of a dessert, mostly on vacations) but I don't bake at this stage (9 months out). I used to bake as a reaction to stress, which means that if I were stress baking, I'd likely be stress eating, too. I live alone but during the pandemic used to bake loads of bread and sweets for my town. I gained 20 lbs just from the amount that I didn't give away! Granted, this was before surgery, but I know that I can eat sweets too easily even now, and I don't want to have that stuff around even while I'm getting it ready to give away. It's okay not to bake. There are plenty of ways to show your family your love that don't involve food, and this will set them up for better habits anyway.

    I've actually lost some weight after my band was removed. Which makes sense, because with my band and GERD, I was depending on slider foods. Now that my band is out, I can eat healthier foods like fruits and veggies that my band couldn't tolerate.

    Congrats on your pre surgery weight loss!......its the 21st for me too! I agree the biggest struggle has been my morning coffee. I started my preop diet on the 8th because we were out of town for 2 weeks prior for a funeral and everyone wanted to take us out to dinner every night for a week so I didnt get to loose much before my pre op started. Plus I kinda wanted to divorce my bad food habbit but have that one last fling hahah. Eitherway I've been loosing an average of 1.2 lbs a day since I started.

    Thank you. Good advice. Once you had your lap band removed did you gain all the weight back? I've had mine for over 10 years. I've been able to keep my weight down to it 25 BMI and I'm worried that I'll gain all the weight back.

    I added carbs in during puree stage... mashed potato. I decided i'm not going to cut out carbs. The way i see it is this: If you can't see yourself cutting certains foods out and sustaining it forever don't bother. The amount of people i've seen who have rebounded and gained a lot of weight back is a result of being way too restictive. Ofcourse the carbs i choose now are whole grain or are cooked healthier and significantly smaller serving. After loosing over 130 pounds i figured i must be doing something right.

    Stalls are very common. The closer to a "normal" weight you get, the more slowly your weight loss will go and the more likely you are to have stalls. You can talk to your nutritionist to make sure you're eating the right number of calories and the right types of food for your body and activity level. You may need to eat more or less or exercise more.

    Feeling irritable

    I'm the same way! I'm 1 week post today and I'm so freaking snappy with my husband . He's been approved but waiting on his date. But has slipped into old eating habits and I snapped on him yesterday. I'm trying so hard to stay on task after surgery and it's like he doesn't even care how much he eats.   23. I'm sorry you're facing this. The biopsy might show something very small that could be removed with surgery with no medical (chemo) or radiation needed. Or it might be more serious. In either event, you would have to talk with the oncologist to determine when you might be healthy enough to have WLS. There are a lot of really good treatments for breast cancer and there are lifestyle changes you can make now to help you get in the best possible shape for both any treatment you need as well as weight loss surgery. I wish you the best!

    I would suggest meeting with a dietician/nutritionist to get a good idea of what to eat and with a bariatric therapist to work on the eating disorder. Also, make sure whoever is prescribing medication for anxiety and depression prescribes medications that don't cause weight gain, as many do. Have you had surgery yet? Your profile says you are pre-op.

    Anybody else experience a time where the is mo weight loss after WLS gastric sleeve. I’m 7 months post and for now he last 2 months have barely lost any pounds but inches. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
