    Day 5 post op

I got a pill cutter at CVS, I can't believe they also wouldn't have a crus her. I lucked out, Ohio State gives every Bariatric patient one as a gift. Has the Ohio State symbol on it but I don't mind that!

    Calcium Chews

Mine had us start the vitamins immediately. They said to just stay away from gummies. That being said the bariatric advantage chews taste like starburst at a time I definitely didnt want anything sweet so I was chewing up the horse pills labeled as petites until I could swallow them. I still take the chews once in a while since they are bought and paid for but I'd sure like to find a better calcium routine. Swallowing those giant pills 3 times a day is getting old.

    February 2019 Sleevers?

St Augustine, Florida with U.S Bariatrics. Insurance was able to pull through for me but had it not worked out I would have done shillingford in margate or Ariel Ortiz in MX.
  4. Exactly what notmyname said! That's what I did! In Aug I scheduled a condo closing on Sept 14 and the first available surgery date was Oct 9 so I took that date. Moved into the condo Sept 29. It was great because my daily walks after surgery allowed me to get to know my new neighbors and my new neighborhood. My kitchen was bariatric friendly because I only moved the things I needed. Couldn't cheat on my pre-op diet (at least at home) because there was nothing there to eat that I shouldn't have! I have two closets in the master bedroom...one is clothes that fit and the other those soon to fit that will be moved over as the time comes. I didn't sell my house first though so that is my project for the new year...gotta do some painting and updating and then I'll put it on the market. So glad I did it this way!

    Support and honesty needed

Many of us Bariatric People would. have smoother pathways if We only could Encourage 👍Our Supporters and Eliminate👎Our Detractors.
  6. Before my surgery my therapist recommended a book called The Emotional First-Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Live after Bariatric Surgery. It's a great book and perhaps you can find answers to he'll you move forward.

    Under 3 weeks left....nervous

It is such a foreign concept to me to worry about but my mother thinks because she’s been nagging me to get bariatric surgery for the last eight years and I would never do it. She had it done herself and she thought that I should do it but I was always too scared. I know she’s happy that I’m having it done, my surgery date is January 22. I’m also nervous but excited!

    Pre-Op Journey

Okay, I left. I deleted the app and walked away. I thought after getting the news that I wouldn’t have surgery I’d take sometime before trying to lose weight. BUT I’ve waited long enough. I didn’t feel that staying would help anyone since this is a bariatric surgery forum, but I’ve come to a few new realizations in the last month. 1. There will be others in this forum who don’t end up having their surgery, for many different reasons. You are not alone! You can still lose the weight! 2. It is still 100% necessary to continue to see your medical weight loss team for accountability and guidance. 3. Your mindset MUST change in order for you to change. This is not a diet. This is a lifestyle change. It sounds cliche until you wake up one morning and think “This change is not temporary. I can no longer be the way I have been in the past.” SO I don’t want to leave the forum, and I prefer to continue on the pre-op thread. Some, like me, will never make it to the post-op threads. I feel that my presence in this place will be a reassurance to those in the same boat. UPDATE: In 27 days, I have lost 10lbs! I’ve cut my calories down to 1000-1200 per day, and I’m walking for an hour a few times per week. I will see a dietician and exercise specialist on Thursday, and I imagine they’ll want me to bump up my calorie intake and exercise more. What I’ve been doing is a good jumpstart, and if it stays the same I’ll be satisfied as well. I will post then if any changes are made!

    December 2018 Sleevers!

The was me. The gave me tuna salad in the hospital after I passed my radiology test. I am on soft and purees for a month. I did have a strict 14 day pre-op liquid diet. Anyway, here is my updated:. I am a 5'9", 44 year old man. I was diagnosed with T2DM I February 2018. I also had high blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides. I am also one of those people that never thought of myself as being fat. I had reverse body dysmorphic disorder. I was in good shape most of my life but slowly gained weight in my 30s (when I got married). My highest weight (recorded) was 256.5 on April 9, 2018 at my first bariatric consultation (it was probably higher but I was afraid to go on the scale). I lost 15 pounds during my 6 month medically supervised diet. I was 243 when I started the 2 week pre-op liquid diet on December 3. On December 17 (surgery day). I weighed in at 231. Post surgery I got lost weight really fast for the first week, but I have been stuck at 222 for the past week. I am getting in all my Protein, 100 ounces of fluids a day and I am logging every bite of food in the My Fitness Pal app (Garmin). This stall is really pissing me off!!!! I know it's normal and to be expected, but f-ck it sucks. I was cleared to return to the gym at my one week follow up for cardio only (walking on the treadmill, elliptical and spin classes (taking it slowly)). I wonder if that's contributing to the stall?????? Anyway, none scale victories. My natural waist size (measured just below the belly button) was 48.4 on December 3. It was a 47 on the day of surgery and today it's 43.75". Blood sugars are much better too. :). I just wish that first week where I was losing a pound a day continued a little longer. I Was Amazed When I Heard This

If the gentleman can tolerate steak - no matter where he is in his post-op progress - good for him! That's HIS choice, and we shouldn't judge him on what he feels is right for him. I have no food restrictions, but I decided early on to wait until the three month mark to have steak again. Whether it's right or wrong, that's what I have decided to do, and it's really not up to anyone else (aside from my bariatric doc) to judge me on it. Everyone is unique in their journey, so one size really doesn't fit all.

    Regrets???

I regret the fact I believed I was too old, even for a second. I too am sorry I didn't have this surgery 20 or 30 years ago when I would have healed at a faster rate, I regret listening to others, my late husband was the worst, that I was a useless screw-up that could not do things correctly, that doctors would laugh at me for wanting surgery, that I was useless and hopeless, I regret putting my life by submitting to those lies, I regret not finishing my education, for settling for a MRS instead of the MD I really wanted, I do not regret my children , for they keep me sane in difficult circumstances. And I regret my malfunctioning body, my surgeons were and are wonderful, skillful people, I do regret my surgery for I believe without it I might have soon died, but my plans for a quick uneventful recovery were flawed, and oddly I do not regret my PICC line, I can give up 14 hours of my day to continue to live, even with the encumberance it beats starvation, malnourisment and death all hollow. I regret that all of my September 5th Surgery Twins have done so well, they have dropped off the Bariatric Pal rolls because they have progressed to regular foods, and no longer feel needful. But even if I am one of the few 20+ week full liquid diet people, I find I'm still stubborn enough to get on with healing because I want a goal acheived and a final victory. And most I regret whining about my 2nd chance to be all I can be , because even with flaws, it is a CHANCE!

I Was Amazed When I Heard This

I'm a bariatric baby, but I love this comment. No one becomes morbidly obese and qualifies for weight loss surgery unless they have a problem with food except for the rare person with a medical issue that can only be solved with severe calorie restriction (I have PCOS and depression but I know that is responsible for only part of my weight gain, not all or even most of it). It bugs me to see how quickly people forget their pre-surgery life and become judgemental. There are people on this thread questioning this man's mental health because he ate a small amount of protein. He didn't eat an entire cake or a gallon of ice cream.

    HELP

If you were a small child, we could take you on our lap, hug you, pat your back , cry with you but tell you everything will be better. As adults, those options are no longer open. There is nothing wrong with seeking help, we all will need it at sometimes in our life. When we are young we can talk to an older person, if you were my family member, I would advise you to seek out a Bariatric- friendly professional. Shoot, I would accompany you to the first one for moral support. The bulimia worries me, you're punishing yourself and hurting your body in the process, skewing your electrolytes, your body will only stand so much and then bad things are going to multiply. Bulemia can lead to death, and I so don't want you lost to it. I can understand the fear of gaining back but don't sacrifice your life energy to prove your point. You need friends, we can do that but online we cannot cure you. Please. start 2019 getting emotional help, okay?

    HELP

There are several reasons that you need to share this with your surgeon's team: -They've probably seen this before and can be a valuable resource (we were actually warned about this in pre-op classes) -They track long-term post-op results in a shared database and if people don't report issues, they are underreported for the entire weight-loss community -Whatever doctor is prescribing your iron and other deficiencies isn't a bariatric specialist and there may be other bariatric considerations (or is it your surgeon treating the deficiencies and you just haven't told him why?) Good luck and I hope you can find someone to help.

Sophomoreville - A Home For The the Tweeners

Man, it is really hard to eat out when someone else is buying. Two meals today, I ate (and enjoyed!) a fraction of the plate but even when your companion knows you’re post-bariatric, it’s hard for them to square enjoyment with “wasted” food/money. I get a take-home bag but old social conditioning hits hard. You’re stuck between making them feel conspicuous if you order far less than they do, or wasting food if you order a regular meal and “barely touch it”. Very odd that work dinners are easier to navigate than some meals with friends.
  18. I live in a small town, and tried to find stuff... drove to a larger city... checked at Walgreens.... I got tired of looking, and just didn't want to try and consume all the requirements... so i just went to tespo... and ordered bariatric & hair & nails. I"ve been very happy with them, and know that I'm getting the right amount. It probably is more expensive, but i have so many other things going on in my life with job, family... it makes my life simple.
  19. I buy the bariatric advantage chewables online (either Amazon or here). I like only having to remember to take one kind of vitamin. I think if I had to take a bunch of different vitamins, I'd routinely miss some. They're expensive, but in reality, its no more than I'd have spent on one a couple nights of take out before the surgery and they last me a month.

    What to do when dumping?

i have a friend who was experiencing late dumping following bypass, from what I recall her dietician advised her she still eating too much carbs. She said she was a moderate carb eater and once she went lower/low carb the dumping improved. I have no experience as bypass is not my procedure but was interested in finding out more (upon reading this thread) so went looking as to what caused late dumping and what could help. Some sites said the same as my friend's dietician, one mentioned the vagus nerve. From the following website: https://bariatricsurgeryco.org/bariatric-surgery/bariatric-surgery-risks/dumping-syndrome/ Late stage dumping syndrome, which occurs 1 to 3 hours after eating, consists of hunger, fatigue, dizziness and lightheadedness, and feeling like your muscles are made of jelly. It is caused when sugar makes your body produce too much insulin, which drives your blood sugar down below normal levels. Again, the key to avoiding late dumping syndrome is to avoid sugar or high-glycemic-index foods and increase your dietary fiber content.
  21. paulamelton I wish you well for your surgery. As far as your mother is concerned. According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. Some people experience problems after bypass surgery. But it is not too common. Generally the problems are related to ulcers. If that is the case, then the following 3 items should be looked at. First, sometimes the cause is from the use of NSAIDs such as aspirin or Excedrin (which contains aspirin). There are a variety of over-the-counter medicine that are NSAIDs. They must be avoided. Second, using a proton-pump inhibitor can help. I was prescribed Omeprazole (over-the-counter Prilosec) for the first year after surgery to allow my stomach to heal properly. There are a variety of proton-pump inhibitors on the market today. Third, make sure you mom was tested for Helicobacter pylori infection. It is a simple test to do. Even your GP can do it. Around half the people in the world have this infection. So it is fairly common. It is also very difficult to cure. It might take a couple treatments using different cocktails of antibiotics to cure it.

do you tell your weight lost

Definitely don't answer if you don't feel comfortable doing so. I would recommend, though, that if you don't want to share your weight loss, you might not want to share that you had bariatric surgery - people are curious and asking how much weight you've lost after weight loss surgery is going to be a natural follow-up question for most people.
  23. I use the B12 sublingual from Bariatric Pal , good tasting, reasonable and sold by somewhere they care about us Bariatric people, not just chasing the Almighty Dollar!
  24. I just bought my multi-vitamin (required to have folic acid of 400mcg, iron of 18 mg, zinc, copper and selenium and B12 500 mcg) and my calcium citrate (required to have 1200-1500 mg) for $20. I got the Opurity calcium-citrate plus chewable from unjury.com and the multi-vitamin from Amazon, the Pro Care Health Bariatric Multivitamin for $20. Is there somewhere out there that has all of this that is easier on the pocketbook?

    Saltines? Caught a stomach bug

Have you asked your bariatric surgeon and the docs at urgent care what you should eat and drink right now (e.g. saltines & regular Gatorade)? What were their recommendations?
