I started at BMI 37 (104kg) and now I'm BMI 21 (59kg). My lowest adult weight ever. My surgeon expected my to get down to 70kg. Reached goal in 9 months and have maintained the loss (within +/- 1kg) for the last 9 months. I was a constant yoyo dieter and was so worried that the surgery wouldn't work for me. I made it work for me ☺️

Does anyone here regret having had gastric bypass surgery? ** nope. Not for a minute. I'd do it every year if I had to. Best decision I've ever made!! I keep hearing about the downsides: adhesions, forever being careful of what to eat, dumping, stricture, malabsorption, etc. ** first, the downside of remaining obese - high risk of diabetes, heart issues, early death. As far as gastric bypass downsides that you mentioned: Adhesions - very rare Forever being careful of what to eat: you'd have to do this if you lost weight the old-fashioned way, too, if you wanted to maintain your loss. Dumping: 30% of us dump. I never have -- and I know lots of others who never have, either. If you turn out to be a dumper, it's controlled by avoiding or limiting sugar (or fats - some people dump on fats). These are things we should be doing anyway. Stricture: happens to 5% of us. Minor issue and very easy fix. Malabsorption: 1) calorie malabsorption is what gives us a leg up on weight loss. It lasts a year or two. 2) nutrient malabsorption - rare as long as you keep on top of your vitamins I think a lot of us once had the same concerns. I did too - which is why it took me ten years to take the plunge. And now my only regret is that I waited so long to do it. If you don't feel you're mentally ready for it, then maybe now isn't the time to do it. It takes some serious dedication and I think you really have to be in the right mindset to be successful. But seriously, it really is the best decision I've ever made. Should have done it years ago.

I can't fathom drinking 8 8oz glasses of water. Wish I could help you. I'm here sort of for the reasons you are. Down on myself. When I began preparation 2 years ago I lost weight w/o the surgery. Lost enough to see if I could continue losing w/o surgery. Here I be, back to where I was. Trying to prepare for surgery again and am struggling. Can't find the motivation or the willingness to sink my teeth into making the changes. Don't know why, so here I am. There is something brutal about this whole thing. I am recovering from a few very difficult, cell level, addictions and they were tough. In fact, I thought 1 would kill me withdrawing from it. I'm older, more physical problems, limitations, exhaustion is my constant companion. Am doing what I am supposed to for the narcolepsy ( it turns out ) and sleep apnea with CPAP, but my fatigue persists. Going for a walk seems like a lot of work now with little benefit. Feeling self-pity I guess. Whatever this phase is, it is the pits because I don't know what I can do except keep on, keeping on, trying to make changes. I want to have the surgery, wake up 60lbs lighter, 40 years younger, full head of hair, and exploding with energy and a positive outlook with gobs of confidence and not think about how little time I have left on this planet. I don't enjoy heading down the homestretch. I want the mother I didn't have to wrap me up in her arms and assure me all is well and not let go for a long time. Embarrassing but true.

I am looking forward to getting off this CPAP machine!!

I don't expect I will get rid of my sleep apnea as I snored even before I was really heavy. I didn't want to admit it, but I'm sure even then, it was sleep apnea and not just snoring. I finally sought treatment for it about 4 years ago. It made a huge difference in my quality of sleep and overall well-being. I thought I would have an extremely difficult adjusting to sleeping with the mask. Through trial and error, I found one that works perfectly for me. It turned out not what I expected I would like best. I'm down a total of 110 lbs. from my highest weight, with 65 of that since surgery in December. I didn't notice any difference in apnea after losing the first 50. After the losing the next 35, I contacted the provider with my updated weight-loss info and described the changes in how I thought I was breathing with the machine. She was able to run my statistics remotely just like they do when the monitor for usage and compliance. It shows up on my myChart as a sleep study. The pressure was lowered after that. -
Weight Loss Medication for Regain?

I used to have to pee ALL THE TIME. I peed before we left the house and usually still ended up going wherever we went. I woke up numerous times a night. After the surgery though it was one of the first things I noticed that changed. I make it all the way through the night, though about dawn I do have to go. I can make it through plane trips and car rides without needing to go. I will say that when I have to go it comes on kind of suddenly and it's difficult to hold it for very long. My husband and I have a theory (he is diabetic) that prior to the weightless/eating changes my blood sugar must have been a factor in why I had to go so often. Also, the decreased pressure in my abdomen with all the loss must be helping.

Any April 2021 bypassers?
GingersnapMI replied to HoltHope2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I expected to start to feel nervous in the weeks leading up to my April 20 surgery but I don’t. What I’m actually feeling is sadness... sadness about the loss of my old lifestyle. I am quite the foodie and truly enjoy eating, I am not a stress eater. But I know that in the years to come I will still be able to eat some/many of the delicious things I’ve eaten in the past, just much smaller portions. Reminding myself of that is helping me get through. Anyone else feeling this way? (I’ve been reading about “food funerals“ but it’s just not for me.) -
Thanks...You ever get on the scale knowing you have lost weight only to find you are a pound heavier or no weight loss? Man that is frustrating!

Hello again to all the WL Veterans....Queen of Crop here...sleeved 10 years ago this October. Lots 88 lbs and have gained back 25. I live in Amsterdam and have no WLS support here (nor did I ever have it). So after keeping my weight off for 5 of the 10 years, started gaining again due to poor choices about 5 lbs a year for the last 5 years. I used to listen to Reeger Cortell's wonderful podcast that she did for years; in fact I was a guest on her show one month. She mentioned weight loss medication; that it might be an option. But I don't know anything about it and not even sure they would offer it here. (There is very little obesity in Holland; at 155 lbs I feel like I am one of the heaviest people in Amsterdam!). Anyway, has anyone had any experience with this and was it successful. I feel like I need some help to get back to basics. Photos taken exactly one year apart after surgery.

Humbling to read these posts....I have not visited BP for a few years. Used to be so active on it. But like many of you, I have gained 25 lbs. I was sleeved in October 2011 and got down to 135 and felt like a million bucks. Then over the past 5 years have gained about 5 lbs a year. I don't feel like I eat that much but. I have to be honest and say I am eating the wrong things. Too many carbs and not enough protein. I wrote a book called Queen of Crop about my wonderful weight loss journey which took a year. (Lost 88 lbs). Thinking about writing a new one called Queen of Crop - Ten Years after. Those of us who were sleeved so long ago were still in the time when it wasn't as popular as it is now. I can say for me, I had Zero post surgery support. I was sleeved in Germany, spent 8 days in the hospital with great care but no very little information on what to do after. Still, in the end it was and is my responsibility to get this under control before I gain more. Thanks for listening and I'll come back here more often now. Two photos taken exactly one year apart.

Hi All! I am just beginning the process of Weight Loss Surgery. I am going through the Cleveland Clinic and I have my first appointment with the surgeon on Tuesday and then after that I have appointments set with the nutritionist, Psychology and Bariatric MD. I guess I just don't know what to expect with the first visit, Due to Covid they are all virtual visits So I won't have an exam or anything. Is it just information or will we decide which procedure would be best for me? Has anyone here had their surgery at Cleveland Clinic? I'm nervous but very excited to get started.

Any advice on post op vitamins for gastric bypass procedures?
catwoman7 replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
there's nothing you can do to help with the hair loss, other than be sure to stay on top of your protein and vitamins so it doesn't get any worse than it is. The stress on your body from the surgery - plus the limited calories we're taking in the first few weeks - cause many of the hair follicles to go dormant. Your body has better things to do with those calories than worry about your hair - for one thing, it needs to heal! Some people swear by biotin, but just as many say it did absolutely nothing for them. There's no harm in taking it, but don't be surprised if it doesn't seem to do anything. some people don't lose any hair at all, and some lose so little that THEY barely notice, let alone anyone else (I was in that second category). Many people lose a fair amount of hair, but they're the only ones who notice it. Losing big, noticeable (by others) clumps isn't very common. and of course, this is all temporary. It'll grow back. I lost hair from months 6-9, but again, it was so little that it wasn't noticeable. -
Taking pills after surgery
lizonaplane replied to lizonaplane's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is the combination I've been on for like 16 years and it really works for me. Not all are for bipolar, some are to prevent migraines, some are for nightmares (but I'm going to try stopping those since I'm not entirely sure they work), and one is for weight loss so I'll probably stop that. I'm glad I should be able to take them easily (I don't mind slowing down to 2-3 pills at once, but I've heard of people taking one pill every 20-30 minutes and that felt like a really bad situation. Thanks! -
Missing something from my diet.
Creekimp13 replied to mzlove10's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Talk to your surgeon's office about protien and calorie targets. Protien is super important because if it's not available your body will still eat protien....only it will be your muscles and organs. Eating less than 1000 calories a day (even if it is rich in protien) will also cause your body to eat your muscles and organs to make up the difference. Very low calorie diets can also shut down your weightloss because your body will think you are starving to death. (you'll still eventually lose weight, but you could disproportionately lose muscle rather than fat...which can cause your metabolism to slow) Talk to your dietician or support people at your surgeon's office for the best diet for optimal weight loss. I know it seems like eating as little as possible should produce the best weight loss result....but the dieticians will tell you this isn't necessarily the case. Sometimes the better strategy is to eat a little more, so you feel strong enough to exercise and support your muscles....because mucle supports a robust healthy metabolism. Might sound like pretzle logic, but it's worth discussing with your dietician. Best wishes! -
I totally understand the frustration. Every time I go to the doctor the scale (at minimum) makes me at least 5 pounds higher than my home scale. I went yesterday and it said I weighed 199. I about cried! My doctor has to remind me every time that their scale is 5-10 pounds off because she weighs herself on it every now and then and she's noticed that it does that even though it's supposed to recalibrate itself. She said it's always off by at least 5 pounds and everyone finds that frustrating, even her (she had weight loss surgery herself about 15 years ago. She's been able to keep her weight off even after having more kids after her surgery). It always frustrates me and I immediately weigh myself when I get home just to see how far off their scale was. I was 195 on my home scale with my clothes on so it was off by only 4 pounds (193 sans clothes because it was the afternoon and... it's also that time of the month so water weight is pissing me off. I had to check that too because I was paranoid I'd gained more water weight due to my stupid period).

Any advice on post op vitamins for gastric bypass procedures?
Michele 2021 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Does anyone have any advice on a good vitamins to take post op the gastric. Bypass that may help prevent hair loss? -
I had my surgery on 2/23/21. I have a really physical job so i am trying to take advantage of this to maximize my weight loss. I feel like I am missing something in my diet. When i go to work I take a water, vitamin water and a Gatorade zero. For dinner, i will take maybe 2/3 bites of salmon or some soups i have in the closet. so far i have had more misses than hits. I feel like im not getting out of the 340s as quickly as I thought because of what i am consuming throughout the day. Do we have like a minimum calorie intake we need to meet or A certain amount of proteins i need per day? I just want to make sure I make the most of this. I was 372 the day of my surgery. I have only lost 32 lbs since surgery.

Like @ms.sss, I’m not a standard case either. I’m the weight I was when I was 12 which is the year before high school for us. It’s also the age I began menstruating & from when I started to put on weight - about 5kg a year & I was exercising more & eating less. Prior to that I was not overweight. Damn hormones! The calculator was way out for me too. It gives results on the 60 - 65% average weight loss stats. But it is guide as to what you could expect. PS - Pretty amazing cake @Crick.

I was looking for the way to introduce myself and couldn't find it. Your situation scares me. I don't have any advice, only concerns. I don't have a date for my surgery yet but it should be set in about one month. Did you lose a healthy amount of weight? Are you still at a net loss? From all you've been through are you able to find the resources that will help you to get back on track? Would you do it again? What advice do you have for someone about to undergo this type of surgery? Sorry I have nothing to offer you, but you have already helped me. I want this procedure to fix my weight issues once and for all. Knowing that can't happen, I wonder how difficult it will be to maintain a significant loss through the surgery over time. I am older now with other health problems making it more difficult to improve my overall health even with wls. It is going to be a battle and I have to prepare for that thanks to what you wrote.

So sorry for your loss...Things will get better with time. True depression (Not the Blues) can eat you alive. Most people do not understand it especially if you have not been diagnosed with a form of depression. About 15 years ago I had a bout with depression. I got over it with medical help. Are you seeing a Psychiatrist? There is no shame in that. I did and it helped me get better and now that is in my rear view mirror. You will always have that sense of loss but you can beat depression with the right meds. It took me several months but I did beat it and no more meds needed. I would encourage you to seek professional help and you will get better. If you need to talk to someone that has been down this road ....private message me. I have been where you are now.

My heart breaks for you and I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through. Do you have a counselor or someone along those lines that you can speak to? Any close friends you can spend some time with. I imagine the times you are alone are the worst because you're left with your thoughts. Perhaps you can find some sort of outlet? Maybe join a gym or take up a hobby that can help occupy those lonely moments in your life/head? Of course NOTHING will ever get you over your loss or replace your husband, but maybe something can help you at least eventually find some peace with it all. I feel for you and I am truly sorry for all you're going through.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. You have a lot on your emotional plate, if not your literal plate. I wish you calm and strength for your recovery.

The weight loss phase refers to the period that you are actively trying to lose weight. It last from the time of surgery until you reach goal or your body just doesn't want to lose anymore and then you are in "maintenance". It is much easier to lose weight in the beginning (some call it the honeymoon period). To satisfy my need for meat, I blended various campbell's chunky Soups until smooth. It looked gross! As for BMR, I don't know but I can tell I did lose some muscle along the way. Hopefully with some strength training and time, I will gain some back without seeing a uptick on the scale.
